Impressions from Soma Bay.

The best of Soma Bay is underwater

The real treasure of the resort is located not above but under the water and is called Ras Abu Soma, Abu Soma Garden and Tobia Arbaa. It is the coral reefs that lie off the coast and are among the most beautiful diving spots in all of Egypt. So pack your mask, snorkel and fins when visiting Soma Bay - otherwise you'll miss the best part.

Millions of colorful fish, a fringing reef full of coral and the chance to see sea creatures you've never seen before like rays, whale sharks, reef sharks and Dolphins. I come to Soma Bay to see these sea creatures - it can still be so beautiful on land. Diving in Soma Bay is definitely one of the best experiences you can have on the Red Sea.

But even if you're not a water lover and perhaps prefer to stay on solid ground under your feet, you can really have a good time in Soma Bay - with a cocktail on the beach, a buffet lunch in the Beach Bar and endless all-inclusive amenities in the great ones Hotels. Imagine relaxing on a comfortable lounger or splashing around in the crystal clear water of the pool. These are the carefree moments you have on an all-inclusive vacation.

I've already been to The Breakers and the Soma Bay Movenpick Resort – I was completely impressed by both hotels. At Breakers you can expect real luxury and all the amenities you are looking for, while at Mövenpick a family atmosphere in a beautiful hotel complex awaits you. So what should I tell you? If you want to really relax, go jogging on the beach, lie around on a beach lounger or go to some really great spots Diving and snorkeling If you want to explore, you've come to the right place in this small holiday resort.

Travel report Soma Bay - what distinguishes the resort?

Visiting Soma Bay is always like coming home. The holiday resort is much, much smaller than the destinations north and south and therefore has a very quiet and family atmosphere. The relaxation begins practically as soon as you arrive - and normally it continues like that.

No stay without swimming and snorkeling

You can see the headland from afar. Soma Bay is a beautiful bay on the Red Sea coast. The beaches in the bay are very shallow and you can often enter the crystal clear water without bathing shoes. If you there Vacation you actually can't not go into the water.

For snorkelers there are attractive spots with fish, turtles, corals and sea grass right in front of the beach. For example, the jetty to the Soma Bay house reef is via the jetty at The Breakers Hotel. It really is a pretty spectacular, well-preserved reef where surprises like whale sharks and dolphins often pass by.

A place full of luxury hotels

Basically, the town of Soma Bay is a collection luxury hotels, which are lined with a settlement of holiday homes. There are also a few beach bars and kite schools - because I don't want to forget to mention: Soma Bay is one of the most popular kite spots in Egypt. But back to the hotels. One luxurious hotel next to another awaits you in the small holiday resort. The who's who of well-known luxury hotel brands has a branch in Soma Bay. Basically, you will find very different hotels and resorts in Soma Bay - there is something for every taste, requirement and budget.

Travel report Soma Bay - The Red Sea has a lot to offer in terms of water sports and activities: snorkeling, diving, sailing and windsurfing are among them.
Travel report Soma Bay - The Red Sea has a lot to offer in terms of water sports and activities: snorkeling, diving, sailing and windsurfing are among them.

The really high-priced resorts like the Kempinski, the Robinson Club, the Sheraton and the Breakers are located at the tip of the headland right next to the most beautiful diving and snorkeling spots. Tobia Arba, Abu Soma Garden and Ras Abu Soma are located right in front of the Breakers and the Sheraton. The Vesta Soma Bay Residences and The Lodge by Cascades are on the other side of the peninsula. In between is the Soma Bay Golf Academy - the resort's excellent golf course, where you can also rent a holiday home.

My recommendations for Soma Bay

There are also some luxurious chalets near the Breakers that you can choose as an alternative to the hotel. In the bay itself you will find some small kite schools, restaurants and bars as well as the Steigenberger Hotel. Across the bay on Soma Beach are the Palm Royal Resort, the Solymar, the Caribbean World Resort and the Mövenpick Resort.

As you can see, Soma Bay has a huge selection of hotels and resorts - you are guaranteed to find the right hotel for your vacation. I can absolutely recommend The Breakers and the Mövenpick Resort – both hotels thoroughly impressed me.

Travel report Soma Bay - my personal experiences

I've known Soma Bay for a long time - especially from my time at Diving Magazine, when I was almost constantly in Egypt. That's why I've been to Soma Bay several times to visit diving centers and to do dives on the beautiful house reef Abu Soma. You have to be aware that there is no such thing as Soma Bay in the true sense, but rather just a collection of self-contained hotels and holiday apartment complexes that largely exist side by side. You don't have an old town in Soma Bay where you can go for a stroll in the evening. But that's not really a bad thing - you can go for a walk or jog on the headland on the beach. Or on the ever-long jetty of the Breakers Hotel, if you live there.

Lots of space for explorers

A particularly popular beach is at Hotel The Breakers Soma Bay, where you will find a relaxed atmosphere and some water sports centers. There is also the impressive Soma Bay jetty, known only as “The Jetty” because it is so long and leads directly to the Soma Bay house reef. Of course, there are also several private beaches to discover. But my personal favorite is the large, long bay between the Soma Bay headland and Safaga with its white sand and beautiful gardens. During my last visit I really enjoyed swimming and snorkeling here. You can move around there quite freely. It's definitely safe.

Abu Soma Garden my favorite

In addition to these bays, there are also some interesting places in the sea that are worth exploring. The house reef Abu Soma is particularly spectacular with its underwater canyons, coral blocks and colorful fish, which you can explore while diving or snorkeling. There are several diving centers that offer guided tours. The seven pillars – Tobia Arba – are also incredibly beautiful. If you are a more ambitious diver, you can too

A popular beach is by Hotel The Breakers Soma Bay, where you will find a relaxed ambiance and some water sports centers. There is also Soma Bay's impressive jetty, nicknamed "The Jetty" because it is so long and leads directly to Soma Bay's house reef.

While the hotels on the headland are pricey -- and correspondingly luxurious -- the resorts on the big bay are generally a little cheaper and more casual. We felt very comfortable at the Mövenpick Resort Soma Bay. There we had more than enough luxury at a very attractive price - excellent value for money.

In addition, the diving school of Scuba World Divers is of high quality, making it an ideal starting point for diving tours. Even from the neighboring hotels, guests came to dive with this dive center, although their hotel also had a dive center.

Worthwhile alternative to Makadi Bay

All in all, I can only recommend a stay in Soma Bay. It is an excellent alternative to the more popular one Makadi Bay, which is usually much busier and more touristy. In Soma Bay you will find all the amenities of a luxury beach holiday - numerous water sports activities, good restaurants and accommodation as well as trendy bars and nightlife options - while still enjoying peace and privacy.

The Destination also has something to offer for everyone: from couples to families to active holidaymakers who simply want to dive or surf. On top of that, you have some of the best diving spots on the Red Sea right on your doorstep. I had a great time in Soma Bay on my last visit and would highly recommend it.
