Because a bucket list can help you sort your ideas and thoughts and create a to-do list for important goals and even life goals - so that you don't forget any of them. What can you put on your bucket list? How do you manage them most sensibly? And how do you put your goals into action? I have put together my bucket list ideas, valuable tips and personal experiences related to my life goals list for you.

I'm actually not a fan of lists and especially not a bucket list - yes, really not. I think there's something pedantic, overly predictable about making a list, and it takes away from your personal planning - as well as your travel planning - some of the intrinsic beauty of allowing gut feeling and chance to run wild to a certain extent.

However, reality taught me otherwise. I'm relatively forgetful and if I'm not careful, my best ideas are forgotten long before I implement them. And that's a real shame. You think you can remember something. And suddenly it was forgotten. This is exactly where a bucket list comes into play.

And so I taught myself to make lists and write down what my plans, goals, wishes and ideas are. I do this on a regular basis journaling, just like me regularly Write a travel diaryso as not to forget anything important from my tours. You just can't remember everything - and writing it down isn't pedantic, it's smart.

Essentials for your bucket list.

Numerous thematic bucket lists

You don't have to keep a bucket list at all, otherwise you can create different lists on which you record your goals for different life topics. You keep a bucket list for travel and travel destinations, one for love and relationships, one for job and finances - and if a life topic is particularly important to you, you keep a more detailed list in this area. At least that's what I do - and I can only warmly recommend it to you.

Bucket List is a tool

If you now start to set ambitious life goals and write one or more bucket lists, you should always remember that a bucket list is not an end in itself. It is a tool for you. You write down ideas, wishes, dreams and goals so that you don't forget them and, if possible, recall them in order to ultimately take action. If you just write your ideas on the bucket list and ultimately don't act, then everything is gone - and your bucket list is useless.

Conversely, you can cross life goals that no longer fit into your life from your list at any time. Ultimately, the bucket list serves one main goal: to gain clarity before you start taking action.

How I keep my bucket list

I keep my bucket lists digitally. This has the advantage that you can change your life goals ranking at any time and have it at hand on your smartphone, tablet and notebook at any time. The point is not that the list is as handwritten and stylish as possible - but that it is useful to you and your goals. That's why I mostly write and update them on mine MacBook.

My Personal Bucket List Ideas Tips and Experiences One of my most important bucket list tips is: Write down your goals. Because having goals in your head is great - writing down goals is much more concrete. Writing them down is a commitment and a much stronger gesture than just having a goal in mind. In addition, you should always have your bucket list ready later so that you can supplement it, check off goals you have achieved and remind yourself of what you still want to do.

I have several listings dedicated to different subject areas. My most important list is of course the one about traveling. But other topics such as relationships, jobs and finances are also important to me. I also collect my goals and wishes in these fields - everything that is important to me and that I would like to put into practice in the future.

I sometimes sit down and really brainstorm my bucket list to come up with new ideas and achieve what I really want. I then do two things that I would definitely encourage you to do when creating your own bucket lists:

  1. I think about a goal that my gut feeling says I really want to achieve. Your gut feeling should say yes. Defining life goals is not just a matter of the mind.
  2. I think a lot about the why - i.e. about my reasons why I really want to do something. You should write in detail the why for each of your bucket goals. The more detailed your why is defined, the stronger your goal will be.

Above all, define your why

When you set out to define your goals, be as specific as possible about why you are pursuing this goal. Because a why acts like a strong magnet. You are literally drawn to this goal. Why do I really want to go? Mauritius go on vacation? – Because it is paradise on earth and I will feel better barefoot on the beach than ever before in my life.

I want to visit Mauritius because my heart melts when I see the sunrises on the beach. Why do I want to become a travel blogger and write my own blog? – Because I can reach thousands of people every day and I really want to change something in people’s lives with my ideas and tips.

That was just an example. If possible, you should elaborate on your why in more detail and embellish it as much as possible. Did you notice anything? Define a why for each goal on your bucket list and you will be drawn to it. The stronger your why is, the easier it will be for you to achieve your life goal.

Bucket List Apps - How do I make a bucket list?

I use a few apps every day to write my travel reports, but at the same time I also use them for journaling, to-do lists and my bucket list. You can choose from different apps for your spoon list and simply use the one you like best. I use the Day One app specifically for the bucket list because it is also my diary app. But you can also use a conventional writing program.

Day One app

The Day One App is my very personal diary app, in which I make my diary entries every day. It is very versatile - and here you can also keep your bucket list and list your goals in life in a wonderfully structured way. You can also export it as a PDF, print it out and hang it over your desk - or even make a printed book out of it. The Day One app is definitely my favorite bucket list app.

Todoist app

If you want it to be a little simpler and even more structured, you can also use the Todoist app. You can create your goals and wishes there like to-dos and be reminded again and again to devote yourself to them. There is also a comment function that you can use to provide detailed information about each life goal. And of course, in the Todoist app, it is particularly easy to tick off goals that have already been achieved and add new ones.

Ulysses app

If you want to formulate your life goals in detail - and I would definitely recommend that - because your dedication to a life goal is significantly higher the more intensively you formulate it and the more clearly you define your why. The best way to do that is in the Ulysses app, which is one of the best writing apps out there.

Make a bucket list - tips for your life goals list

If you have now selected the right app for your bucket list - you can also write it on paper, that is also possible - you can now start creating your bucket list. However, it makes sense to proceed in a planned and structured manner. Below I will give you a short guide on how to create your bucket list.

1. Brainstorming

Start by brainstorming and write down literally everything that comes to mind. There are no taboos. Let your mind wander and write down all the goals, dreams, wishes and ideas you have. And when I say everything, I really mean everything: Try to write down at least 50 different life goals from a wide variety of topics for your bucket list.

2. Write down realistic and unrealistic goals

Which goals are realistic and which are unrealistic will be decided later. First you write everything down. If your goal is to travel around the world, that's realistic. Earning 10.000 euros a month may seem unrealistic at first - but at second glance you may realize that it is more realistic than you thought.

3. Sort your goals chronologically and thematically

Now you have listed a lot of goals for your bucket list. And if not all goals come from a single topic, it makes perfect sense to sort them into different bucket lists thematically. One list for travel, one for family and relationships, one for professional goals. Whatever you want. You then sort the list chronologically: What do you want to achieve in 12 months? What do you want to achieve in three years? What in five years? And what is your long-term goal in ten years?

4. Describe your goals and define your why

As I explained in detail above, you should definitely write down your why for each goal in as much detail as possible. When you look at your lists afterwards, you can see directly which goals your why is strongest. These are the life goals on your bucket list that are most powerful – your most important life goals.

5. Replace achieved life goals on the bucket list with new goals

As I have already emphasized, the most important thing is to take action. And this way you will achieve your life goals. Maybe not all – but some. And once you've achieved something, feel free to cross it off your list and replace it with something new. You've experienced it - it's checked off.

Unless, like me, you have some life goals that repeat themselves: After I achieved the life goal of “Snorkeling with the Whale Shark,” I left it alone. Because I want to experience this as often as possible in my life.

I moved Mauritius to the top of my bucket list travel destinations in March, imagined my why as clearly as possible - and was so drawn to it that I flew there in October. Photo: Sascha Tegtmeyer

My Bucket List Ideas – What goals in life attract you?

If you're looking for even more inspiration for your life goals list, I've put together a few bucket list ideas below that you might want to take up - and commented a little entertainingly on them. I haven't done all of it myself yet. So maybe you can check off one or two goals before I do?

– travel to Mauritius

Mauritius is, in my opinion, the most beautiful place in the world. You can also replace it with any other travel destination. I put Mauritius at the top of my travel bucket list in March and was so drawn to it that I flew there in October. Mauritius is an example – they are also welcome to do so Maldives, the Caribbean or any other destination on the planet.

– see the Northern Lights

I haven't seen the Northern Lights either - but it must be an incredible experience - and a super exciting bucket list idea.

– do a road trip through the USA

I've already done a little road trip through the USA - and it was an incredible experience. That's why this destination is back on the bucket list, just with a different route. The country is so big that you can easily do a lot of road trips there.

– try skydiving

Give it a try and tell me how it was. I look forward to hearing about your experience. I'm still hesitant if this is a bucket list idea for me - I'd rather keep my feet on the ground.

– learn a new language

That's a goal you can start with today. With language learning apps, you can easily learn a new language on your smartphone or tablet. This is definitely a life goal that you can achieve in no time.

- start a new sport

Starting a new sport is always an incredibly exciting undertaking. I just got 2016 from one day to the next with the Stand Up Paddling started and have continued to this day. Recently I just straight away with the Trail Running started because I was conventional Jog has become too boring. Or do you want to experience something very special? Then put scuba diving on your bucket list – become an Open Water Diver in just a few weeks and immerse yourself in the fascinating underwater world.

- write a book

An Book Writing has been on my bucket list for a long time. I imagined very intensely what it would be like to write a book and to have written one, I became clear about my why and I broke down the writing of the book into smaller to-dos. I also read a lot of specialist literature on how to write a book. I am currently in the process of finishing my first book.

– visit the seven wonders of the world

The world has far more than seven wonders. Nevertheless, it is a beautiful life goal to visit the seven wonders of the world in one's lifetime.

– start your own business

Do you have a brilliant business idea? Then write down starting your own business as a bucket list idea. Or do you still have no idea? Then write it down anyway. The idea will come up and if you are prepared, you can start right away.

– become a travel blogger or influencer

I don't know if I should recommend you Blogger or become an influencer. You really have to want to do that, because it's a lot of work. But also a lot of fun. If you dream about it, it should be on your bucket list too.

– learn to play a musical instrument

This is another bucket list idea you can start with today. Learning an instrument is a lot of fun and now easier than ever.

- go on a trip around the world

A trip around the world is not as expensive as you might think. Depending on how long you want to travel and what level of comfort you want while on the road, you can get one for as little as 5.000 or 10.000 euros World Travel company. If you plan a little, a trip around the world can always be realized.

– swim with dolphins

This is one of the most beautiful experiences I can imagine on my travels Swimming with wild dolphins. This is a permanent item on my personal bucket list because this experience is just so special and unique. Although I have experienced this several times, it will remain on my to-do list in the future.

These are just a few bucket list ideas to get you started. I could write down a hundred more bucket list ideas for you on the fly. Remember that there are no wrong answers when it comes to writing down your ideas and desires. You'll see. Little by little, your life goals list will fill up with great ideas.

For many people, the travel bucket list is particularly important. You can either create a general bucket list or sort your goals in life thematically in several lists. Especially if you have written down a lot of life goals according to the bucket list instructions mentioned above, it can make sense to keep several thematic lists. There are many types of bucket lists that you can create based on your interests. Here are a few bucket list types:
For many people, the travel bucket list is particularly important.

What is a bucket list?

By definition, a bucket list is a list of goals and desires that you still want to do or achieve in your life. The origin of the term is very exciting: the name of the list comes from the English phrase "kick the bucket", which in German means something like "give in the spoon". That's why the bucket list is also known in German as a spoon list.

Why do you say bucket list?

As is so often the case, the term bucket list comes from English. The name of the list comes from the English idiom "kick the bucket", which in German means something like "giving up the spoon". That's why the bucket list is also called spoon list in German - it should contain everything you want to do before you give up.

What should not be missing on a bucket list?

I would divide the bucket list thematically, because there really isn’t a lot that should be missing from the bucket list. I would therefore make a bucket list for travel, one for personal development and one for partnership. It's also great to make a bucket list for the family, and you should also consider making a bucket list for fun activities.

How do I create a bucket list?

Since you change a lot on a bucket list, I would rather keep the bucket list digital than by hand. You can then more easily add new goals to your list, check off goals you've achieved, and take notes on each item. Plus, it's easier to sort through a digital bucket list. When making a bucket list, I recommend the Day One app, the Todoist app, and the Ulysses app.

What should you have done in life?

The question What should one have done in life? you have to answer very individually. That depends very much on your personal interests. But if you're looking for some inspiration, you can add the following goals to your bucket list of life goals:
– make a trip to Mauritius
– Go hiking in New Zealand
– do a road trip through the USA
– ride a scooter through Thailand
- travel around the world
– swim with dolphins
- Run a marathon
– Try scuba diving with a tank
- Learn a new instrument
- Learn another language
- study a new subject
– a romantic dinner on the beach
– taste a fine wine or eat in a starred restaurant

What should you try?

There is so much you should try. For example, I am currently trying out trail running because normal jogging has become too boring for me. What you should try is a very individual matter. Here's a list for you with some inspiration of things to try:
– make a trip to Mauritius
– Go hiking in New Zealand
– do a road trip through the USA
– ride a scooter through Thailand
- travel around the world
– swim with dolphins
- Run a marathon
– Try scuba diving with a tank
- Learn a new instrument
- Learn another language
- study a new subject
– a romantic dinner on the beach
– taste a fine wine or eat in a starred restaurant

Who Invented the Bucket List?

The term "bucket list" was first popularized in the 2006 film The Bucket List, starring Jack Nicholson and Morgan Freeman. In the film, two men confronted with their own mortality make a list of things they want to do before they "bite the dust." This list will help them live their lives to the fullest and achieve their dreams.

What's on your bucket list?

At the top of my bucket list is finishing writing and publishing my first book. This is currently my most important goal in life. I would also like to finally go on a long-distance trip to Southeast Asia again. Both things are so important to me that they are not only on my bucket list, but are actually put into practice. Because writing something on the life goals list is one thing - putting it into practice is quite another. So start writing your bucket list today and put some of it into practice.

What are the best bucket list ideas?

A bucket list of ideas is an inspirational and motivating list of activities or goals that a person wants to achieve in their life before it ends. There are no hard and fast rules about what should be on a bucket list, but it should be a combination of fun, challenge, and personal fulfillment. Creating a bucket list with many different bucket list ideas can enrich life and motivate people to achieve their dreams.
Travel is one of the most popular categories on a bucket list. There are many ways to discover the world and have unforgettable experiences. Some ideas are to walk to Paris or bike to Manchuria. A ride on the Trans-Siberian Railway to Beijing or a whale watching tour could also be on the list. Or how about exploring the wilderness and observing free-roaming gorillas?

Sporting activities can also be on the bucket list. A sailing or pilot's license is an impressive achievement to be proud of. Running one or more marathons, or having the adventure of swimming with a shark or driving a dog sled.

The bucket list should also include goals that strengthen or expand your personality. For example, you could make a goal to smile at at least one stranger every day, donate blood, or plant trees. Or how about the challenge of standing in the street with a "Free Hugs" sign and see what happens? These goals can help build personality and bring a sense of contentment.

Creativity and self-actualization can also be on the bucket list. A person could write and publish a book, learn an instrument and give a concert, paint and exhibit a work of art, or create and put their own website online. These goals expand skills and help express creativity and passions.

Overall, creating a bucket list can help make life more exciting and fulfilling. It is a promising way to pursue personal dreams and goals and to enrich life with new experiences and adventures.

Bucket list ideas, tips & experiences - to-do list for the rest of your life?

My conclusion

I really hope I could give you an idea of what a bucket list is and how you can make the most of it. And maybe you've even gotten some ideas about what to put on your bucket list. My conclusion is therefore clear: every person should keep at least one spoon list - or ideally several. Because the more goals and dreams you have, the easier it will be for you to put them into action.

Creating a bucket list is one thing – but you also have to take action. Photo: Sascha Tegtmeyer
Creating a bucket list is one thing – but you also have to take action. Photo: Sascha Tegtmeyer

You have to take action

And that's probably the whole point of every bucket list: The best list is of no use to you if you don't ultimately take action and put your goals into practice. So a life goal list is only as good as what you make of it. But you have something that makes you take action: namely your why. Never forget your why - then you will start acting on your own and perhaps achieve things you never thought possible. Everything starts with a small list - and ends with a more fulfilling life.

Do you already have a bucket list or plan to start one in the future? What goals are you pursuing? Which travel destinations do you really want to visit? Share your experiences in the comments.
