Finding life goals – tips & experiences – the power of your true calling

by

Life goals are like a strong magnet. The better you imagine them and the clearer it is to you why you want to achieve a certain goal, the more they magically attract you. Recognizing your desires, finding meaning and formulating life goals is a superpower that will allow you to take your life on a completely new path in no time. Visiting the most beautiful places in the world, meeting the right partner for life, finding your calling in life - it's easier than you think. How can you find life goals? What are worthwhile life goals? And how can they really be put into practice? For you, I have dealt a little with the power of the true calling. My experience report.

We often believe that everything in life happens or should happen to us on its own. Some speak of fate, others of chance. They are – metaphorically speaking – like a leaf in the wind. Many people learn from our parents as children: you should literally have dreams, wishes and goals in the back of your mind. Anyone who formulates and writes down their life goals will quickly be labeled as bourgeois or fussy. Because where is the spontaneity?

What is planned quickly seems constructed and forced. The magic and aesthetics of the moment seem lost. A goal that is not achieved playfully and with ease, but rather with meticulous planning and subtle execution, gives many the impression of being less valuable. Isn't it so?

How long do you have to think?

What always strikes me: Surprisingly, many people have to think long and hard when you ask them about their life goals. They simply don't know what they want to achieve in their life and what their true calling is. I am always very amazed to see that even people who are in the middle of life, hold high professional positions and have a good education, stutter when you ask them about their life goals - and then about several? They often know very well what they don't want in their life.

But if your life goals are derived from what you don't want in life - then they are simply derived from the process of elimination. That shouldn't be your approach. Instead, you should take a very active and offensive approach to finding your life goals. I advocate doing the whole thing in writing. Because obviously not having written down your life goals isn't particularly helpful for your memory.

Writing it down is essential

Therefore write it down. You should basically write down everything that is dear and sacred to you. We forget important things more quickly than we think, even if we are sure that we definitely won't forget something. Call your life goals list a bucket list - that sounds more modern and might encourage you to start writing them down.

Rule number one: Even if you think you'll remember everything, write it down. And that applies to your life goals more than anything else.

And this is how you start if you want to find your life goals: Now take a piece of paper or open a text document and write down at least 50 life goals that seem valuable and worthwhile to you. Finding goals in life - this is how you get to the bottom of your vocations

At this point I can only advise you what I do myself: the best way to find out what you want is to look at what you have done in the past and what it has done to you. What were the moments when you were truly happy? When were you proud of yourself and happy with yourself?

When did time almost stop for you because you were so absorbed in what you were doing? So when were you really in the flow? These are often clues to your true calling, the ways of life and the activities that your life goals should include.

Listen to your gut feeling and not to others

In order to find your own path, it is important not to let anyone - friends, family or society - tell you what is right for you. Our parents and grandparents often mean well, but they have little way of knowing what will make us happy in 20 or 30 years. I often don't know either. But we can find out if we listen to ourselves.

Is what our gut feeling tells us correct? That's hard to say. But through trial and error and constant trial and error, we slowly get closer to our life goals and our true calling. Curiosity and openness to new things are probably the most important qualities when it comes to finding your true goals in life. I can only recommend that you get to know yourself better - then you can easily find your life goals by themselves.

My strategy for better life goals

My personal experiences

If there's one thing I've learned: you don't just have goals in life - you develop them. And you develop them further. You formulate them. I too am not immune to neglecting or even forgetting important life goals. Sometimes life goals change - that's completely normal. That's why I can't emphasize enough how important it is to write down your goals and create bucket lists for the most important things in life.

The best life goals are of no use to you if you don't start taking action - and questioning your actions. Photo: Sascha Tegtmeyer
The best life goals are of no use to you if you don't start taking action - and questioning your actions.

If you want to successfully find your life goals, I think you should keep two things in mind: First, you should definitely write a diary or at least a list to formulate your life goals. And secondly, you should be clear about the why for every goal in life - i.e. your motivation.

Third, the best life goals are of no use to you if you don't take action and implement them - so act and reflect on your actions. If you want to travel and don't book the trip, you won't win anything.

1. Keep a diary and write down life goals

I write down all of my life goals in a digital diary. You can also keep a printed, handwritten journal. But I would recommend the digital version because it makes it easier for you to make changes to the life goals list. You can add new goals and remove others that are no longer important to you. This way, your list of life goals becomes a dynamic structure that continues to evolve.

I use about this Day One app and Ulysses appto write and record my life goals.

2. Formulate your why in as much detail as possible

The question of why is quite abstract and for a long time I found it difficult to really formulate my why. It goes without saying why I want this or that. A why is like a magnet, they say.

This means: If you formulate your why for every life goal that you have written down and formulate it as detailed and clearly as possible, the likelihood of achieving your life goal increases many times over. And when you see where your why is particularly extensive, you will also immediately know which life goals are particularly important to you.

3. Take action and reflect

The stronger your why, the quicker and easier it is for you to take action. Because what good are the best goals in life if you don't start putting them into action? Once you have formulated your life goals, pick out the goals that are particularly important to you and immediately start putting at least one goal into action. All the work will be a waste if you don't start taking action.

And when you act, you have to reflect. You have to check whether your actions are moving you closer to your goals or moving away from them. Action involves constant questioning and correction.

Finding life goals – the power of your true calling

My conclusion

I can tell you from my experience: Written, precisely formulated life goals are so, so important. When you know what you want and why you want it, it's like a superpower. You do the work once, create a list of life goals and you will feel the benefits for the rest of your life.

My life goals as a travel blogger are understandably closely linked to traveling – and animal encounters. But partnership and the job are also very important to me. In this respect, I always keep my list of life goals up to date. This makes it particularly easy to go from writing things down to taking action. Because ultimately it's about the actions. Our life goals are just the precursors to this.

What are your life goals? Did you write them down and formulate them? Share your experiences in the comments.
