When talking about Malta, most travelers think of the main island of the same name. In fact, the Maltese archipelago, located 81 kilometers off the southern coast of Sicily, consists of three inhabited areas islands and several small uninhabited islands. The inhabited islands include the main island of Malta with about 246 square kilometers, Gozo with 67 square kilometers and Camino with just about three square kilometers.

The Malta archipelago looks back on around 7000 years of history. A number of churches, ancient temples and ruins are spread across the entire island landscape. Over the millennia, the island republic has been under the most diverse influences of the great cultures of the entire Mediterranean region and has received Italian, British and Arabic influences. The island state is still correspondingly diverse and interesting today.

In total, 433.300 residents live in Malta on the three inhabited islands of the Maltese archipelago. Most of them live in the main island of Malta. Capital is the city of Valletta on the east coast, which is also the cultural, social and economic center of the island. Most of the population counts with just 23.000 people the city Birkirkara west of Valletta, which is located inland. The official official languages in the country are Maltese (a mixture of English, Italian and Arabic) and English. Most people speak Maltese as their first mother tongue.

Wellness, relaxation, soaking up the sun – for whom is Malta the right travel destination?

The Maltese archipelago is perfect for culture-minded travelers, who also like something Sun and heat enjoy. In addition, the island, with its many spa and wellness options, is also ideal for those seeking peace and quiet Detox-Fans. In addition, like everywhere else in the Mediterranean, water sports enthusiasts also get their money's worth. The islands of Malta, Gozo and Comino offer many exciting diving sites and are therefore ideal for a Mediterranean diving holiday. Party birds, adventurers and island hoppers will find plenty of opportunities to let off steam in Malta. Due to the low cost of living, the destination is also ideal for family vacations and budget vacations.

Only one thing is missing – the dream beaches

The only thing the islands cannot boast of are real dream beaches. For a great beach holiday are more likely Mallorca (Tips) or Sardinia (travelogue) to recommend. However, Malta is the perfect home for sun-hungry winter refugees: Due to its sheltered location south of Sicily, the temperatures are mild and the rainfall is slightly lower than in other holiday destinations in the western Mediterranean. Whether a Malta beach holiday, fascinating snorkeling trips, long hikes, art and culture, romantic sunsets or wild party nights are on the agenda: the Maltese archipelago is incredibly diverse and makes most travelers happy.

Malta sights - the 7 best holiday tips for the islands

Malta, Gozo and Comino are rather small islands - and there is a lot to discover on the small area. The Maltese are very faithful, so the islands of churches are literally littered. In addition, you will immediately notice the very special architectural style with sandstone. We present you some of the best sights in Malta.

1. Malta's capital Valletta

Valletta is not only the capital of Malta, but also a UNESCO World Heritage Site. A walk through the winding streets of the fascinating historic old town is one of the highlights of any Malta holiday.

2. Xlendi on Gozo

This small fishing village sits enthroned in front of a beautiful bay and invites travelers not only to a café, but also to extended dives and fun water sports. On the northern side of the bay you can visit the cave Caroline Cave. In Xlendi you can go diving beautifully. In addition, La Grotta is one of the largest open-air discos in Europe.

3. Il-Kalanka Bay

Il-Kalanka Bay is located on the south coast of Malta and is one of the most beautiful rock bays on the island. The water is turquoise and invites, via steep rock stairs reachable, for a long bathing. Since the bay is little frequented because of their somewhat isolated location, vacationers will find there deep rest and relaxation.

4. The fishing village Marsaxlokk

With views of the traditional and colorful Luzzus boats in the harbor, it's a great place to dine in Marsaxlokk, Malta. On Sundays an extensive market invites to interesting shopping tours.

5. Temples Ħaġar Qim and Mnajdra temples

The temples are among the most exciting archaeological excavations and the absolute excursion highlights of the island. Nearby are the 7000-year-old Dingli Cliffs, whose high cliffs provide a breathtaking view during a walk.

6. Popeye Village in Mellieha

The Popeye Village in Mellieha is an amusement park built from a former movie set for an 1979 Popeye movie. A leisure and aqua park offer fun for young and old. It is also possible to book a boat tour or simply go swimming in the Blue Bay.

7. Crystal Lagoon on Comino

The Crystal Lagoon is one of the bluest bays of the small island of Comino and attracts every year many water niches in its spell. Anyway, Comino is known for its great bays. The easiest way is to rent a small speedboat to explore them all on your own.

8. Former island capital Mdina

The historic city of Mdina is the former island capital of Malta and today has 235 inhabitants. It is located in the middle of the island on a 185 meter high foothills of the Dingli Plateau and is the twin town of Rabat, which adjoins directly to Mdina. The impressive historic buildings in the cities are certainly among the most important sights in Malta.

The best travel time in Malta

As the climate table shows, the best time to visit Malta is from May to September. Provided you want it dry and warm on Malta vacation. How Expensive is Malta Vacation?

Is Malta expensive? How much does a holiday on the Mediterranean island cost?

The Maltese Islands are among the cheapest travel destinations in Europe, especially in the off-season. However, prices for flights, accommodation, rental cars or public transport, excursions and dining out vary significantly depending on the season. Hence the question: Is Malta expensive? How expensive is a Malta holiday? How much a trip to Malta costs depends, of course, on personal lifestyle and research work beforehand. One and the same package tour can cost 500 euros per week with one tour operator and 800 euros with another. Many factors determine the daily price of a trip. Comparison is announced.

This also applies to individual travelers who put together their own trip and to vacationers with flexible travel dates. Prices for direct flights from one of the major German airports average between 50 and 200 euros. Malta early birds book cheaper than Malta last minute travellers. Decent hotel rooms and clean private holiday apartments are available from as little as 20 euros per night, depending on the season. As everywhere in the world, there are no upper limits. The same applies here: the earlier you book, the greater the choice and the cheaper the price.

Flight prices and accommodation in Malta

The prices for flights to Malta can vary greatly depending on the season. Direct flights from Germany usually cost between 100 and 300 euros. If you book early, you have the greatest choice and can often find cheaper deals. The prices for accommodation in Malta also vary depending on the season and location. Inexpensive hotel rooms and private holiday apartments are available from as little as 30 euros per night. If luxury hotels don't appeal to you, you can also find cheap and clean accommodation in hostels and holiday apartments.

Eating and drinking in Malta

Food and drink prices in Malta vary depending on whether you eat in the tourist areas or inland. While the prices in the tourist areas are similar to those in Germany, you can save up to 50 percent in the interior of the country. Supermarkets in Malta offer groceries at prices that are around 20 to 30 percent lower than in Germany. Alcohol is also relatively cheap in Malta.

Transport and excursions in Malta

The prices for public transport in Malta are comparatively low. The bus is a cheap way to explore the island and get to the various sights. Guided excursions are also cheap and a good way to get to know the island. Since Malta is a small island, all destinations can be reached quickly.

Conclusion – Is Malta expensive?

Overall, Malta is one of the cheapest destinations in Europe in the off-season. The prices for flights, accommodation, food and excursions depend on the season and the chosen destination.
