The island state with its capital Port Louis is located in the southwest of the Indian Ocean, around 870 kilometers as the crow flies east of Madagascar. The archipelago has a long and eventful history, a unique culture and is now one of the economic centers of the region. Mauritius (German [maʊ̯ˈriːtsi̯ʊs], English [məˈɹɪʃəs], French Maurice [moˈʀiːs], Creole Moris) is the main island of the archipelago.
