Definition – What is a drone and what are the differences?

Essentially, a drone is a model airplane - often a small mini-helicopter. This is an unmanned flying object that is operated by remote control, smartphone or tablet computer and can be flown both within visual range and beyond visual range. The general definition of drone follows that of unmanned aerial vehicle:

â € œAn unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) or Unmanned Aircraft System (UAS) is an aircraft that can be autonomously operated and navigated through a computer or from the ground via a remote control without the need of an on-board crew . € œ

Not all, but many modern drones are so-called multicopters (often quadcopters). This means that they have four or more rotors, which are located on the top in the most advantageous arrangement possible. Modern drones can be flown with a remote control or with a smartphone such as the iPhone or with a tablet computer such as the iPad Pro. Not all, but many drones are equipped with a high-resolution camera.

Current cameras on drones make almost professional photos and videos in high image quality in UltraHD 4K resolution. The recordings of the airplanes are also so professional because the Camera on the drone is often assisted by a three-axis stabilizer, which keeps the shots always wobble-free and evenly straight.

So you can pursue two hobbies at the same time with the current model airplanes: On the one hand you can use them for Photography and create spectacular and breathtaking shots in a variety of ways. On the other hand, you can also operate aviation as a hobby yourself. There are even drone races and on drone airfields, like-minded people meet regularly Sport.

Drone regulations – What do you have to consider when flying a drone?

As the drone market grew, so too did conflicts and accidents. That's why at 06. April 2017 a drone regulation came into force. What do hobby pilots have to consider in the future?

  • labeling requirement

From a take-off mass of 0,25 kilograms, drones must have a fireproof badge bearing the name and address of the owner.

  • knowledge proof

If the launch mass of your drone exceeds two kilograms, you will need a proof of knowledge - the drone driver's license.

  • permit exemption

Drones under five kilograms takeoff mass are basically only permission-free - in principle, no take-off permission must be obtained. However, regionally different regulations apply, which must be complied with.

  • license requirement

If the starting mass of your copter is more than five kilograms, you will generally need a permit for the start.

  • operating ban

In many places and situations you are not allowed to start with the drone. These include out-of-sight flight, rescue service locations, public facilities such as hospitals, specific transportation routes, near airports, higher than 100 meters, and residential properties.

  • dodge duty

Unmanned aviation systems must, in principle, avoid other aircraft with persons on board.

  • Use of video glasses

Flights with video glasses are allowed. However, only with restrictions: the drone must not fly higher than 30 meters and an accompanying person must constantly keep an eye on the drone and be able to inform the controller immediately - for example by radio - if a danger occurs.

That's just an excerpt from the regulations. The Drones Regulation en Detail can be viewed online at the Ministry of Transport. All important information about the regulations from the Drone Regulation can be obtained at a glance here: Federal Ministry of Transport and Digital Infrastructure

Liability insurance for drones – what do you really need?

No airman should take off with his drone until he has taken out liability insurance. In Germany, the insurance for drones is even mandatory - even in private flights you are under § 43 para. 2 Luftverkehrsgesetz (LuftVG) obliged to sufficiently insure the drone. In addition, the drone liability insurance should also be in the current drone liability insurance comprehensive coverage Foreign countries be valid.

But beware: some so insurance does not apply in the USA and Canada. You should make sure that they also apply there. Theoretically, things can go wrong when flying a drone. Therefore, when you take out your drone insurance, you should make sure that the sums insured are quite high and that as many cases of damage as possible are also insured. We have taken out our insurance with the liability heroes (www.helden.de).
