Mövenpick Resort Soma Bay experiences & reviews – the perfect hotel on the Red Sea?

by

The Mövenpick Resort Soma Bay is a luxurious hotel situated directly on the Red Sea coast. It offers guests not only a breathtaking view of the sea and the surrounding bay, but also a variety of entertainment options and amenities. In this beach hotel you can relax in the spa area, work out in the gym with a personal coach, swim in the pool or relax on the fine sandy beach with crystal clear water. For culinary delights, there are several restaurants and bars serving international and regional cuisine. We spent a whopping three weeks on vacation in this hideaway. In my Mövenpick Resort Soma Bay experiences and reviews, I take a close look at the five-star hotel and tell you everything you need to know about this beautiful beach hotel.

Imagine it's the coldest December in Central Europe for ten years. The temperatures drop to minus ten degrees Celsius - it's snowing, lakes are freezing, it's not really getting light and the cold wind is blowing in your face, so that after a few minutes outside you're completely frozen. That's how it was in December 2022. Fortunately, we managed to circumvent this situation by planning the rest of our vacation for the last few weeks of the year and spending a sunny, warm vacation at the Mövenpick Resort Soma Bay.

Our goal was one Hotel with excellent value for money, located in a place that is warm and sunny in December. Searched, found! December in Egypt is almost guaranteed sunshine and mild temperatures just below 30 degrees Celsius. You can lie in the sun in swim shorts, bathe, swim, snorkel and enjoy that summer feeling.

Mövenpick Soma Bay review.

My price-performance winner – Mövenpick Resort Soma Bay

Our choice fell on the Mövenpick Resort Soma Bay. Because this hotel had a particularly good price-performance ratio. Our goal was clear from the start: We wanted to travel for as long as possible and at the same time as cheaply as possible - without compromising on the quality of the hotel. And I can reveal this much: that's exactly what we managed to do.

It wasn't quite clear to us beforehand because we had TripAdvisor, Google and HolidayCheck I read some Mövenpick Resort Soma Bay reviews that made us question whether we had made the right choice. This much can be said straight away: the hotel was the perfect choice for us. The resort now has a water park - it has also changed its name and is now called Mövenpick Waterpark Resort & Spa Soma Bay.

Summer feeling in December - The Mövenpick Resort Soma Bay was our choice for an extensive holiday before Christmas. Photo: Sascha Tegtmeyer

Our stay at the Mövenpick Resort Soma Bay was something very special in more ways than one. For one thing, I've never stayed in a hotel for so long in one go. I have often made trips of three, four or even five weeks - but I have never stayed three weeks in one place. We stayed at this resort for over XNUMX weeks in December and enjoyed the clear blue skies and late autumn warmth of Egypt.

I have therefore collected some Mövenpick Resort Soma Bay experiences. Due to our long stay, I was able to examine the hotel in great detail and see what strengths and weaknesses it has. There is a lot of positive feedback from other guests, but also some less positive feedback, some of which I cannot understand. I will go into more detail on that further down in this article – and also show what we didn’t like so much about the hotel.

So much can be revealed in advance: the hotel had an unbeatable price-performance ratio for us. We only paid a little more than 1000 euros for three weeks with all inclusive and a Condor flight (booked via Check24) and were able to spend a really fantastic holiday in Egypt at the Mövenpick Resort. As of today, I have been to Egypt nine times and this was one of my most beautiful trips to the Red Sea.

The warmth and hospitality of the hotel staff

On the other hand, we have probably never developed such a strong and positive relationship with the employees at a resort. From the cook to the service staff to the life guards on the beach, we experienced real hospitality and a lot of warmth. We still have close contact with many of the employees even after the trip Social Media.

Basically it started in the morning at breakfast and continued throughout the day. In the morning we were warmly welcomed on the beach by the life guards Abd Allah, Mohamed and Mustafa and were proactively and unprompted brought our cappucino to the beach lounger by Mohamed, the bartender at the beach bar.

Mövenpick Resort Soma Bay experiences reviews reviews travelogue
Abd Allah let us know immediately when the turtle was right on the jetty. Photo: Sascha Tegtmeyer

Our life guards not only brought the towel to the lounger for us, but also came by again and again during the day to chat, gave us exciting insights behind the scenes or let us know directly when the big turtle was on its way directly on the jetty. It was similar when we came to the pool in the afternoon: Kareem and Omar waved at us from afar and lovingly looked after us.

At lunchtime in the Italian restaurant, the waiter Moamen Mahmoud - unfortunately we didn't take a photo together - took care of us, who served us extremely courteously and read practically every wish from our lips. Similar to the pizza maker Mr. Ali, who kindly brought us whole pizzas directly to the table at lunchtime - although that's not actually intended.

Executive boss Roger Rached worked hard for us. Mövenpick Resort Soma Bay experiences reviews reviews travelogue
Executive boss Roger Rached worked hard for us.

And also the Executive Chef Roger Rached worked hard for us. He not only took care of our satisfaction with the food every day and was always available for a nice chat. When we raved about the Egyptian dessert Om Ali, he had some prepared for us the next day. Perhaps that's an advantage of staying in a hotel for so long—you develop a personal relationship with some of the staff that goes beyond just customer contact.

There were an incredible number of friendly and courteous employees in the hotel - unfortunately I don't remember all their names. The staff made our holiday at this hotel a very special one - and that's why this post is dedicated to them.

Our personal Mövenpick Resort Soma Bay experiences

Our goal for the holiday was to escape the winter for as long as possible and soak up a lot of sun in summer temperatures. We tended to pay less and at the same time didn't want to make any compromises with the hotel. In other words: a particularly good price-performance ratio. My research brought me to the popular little holiday resort of Soma Bay – and the Mövenpick Resort there. In retrospect, the choice should prove to be spot on.

Relax in the pool, enjoy a delicious cocktail on a lounger and relax - the Mövenpick Resort Soma Bay is ideal for a beach holiday.

Because the hotel was perfect for our needs: We had an excellent room with a large balcony, pool view and partial sea view, the food was consistently of an excellent standard, the hotel employees were incredibly friendly and courteous, and the small, gently sloping sandy beach was great for a beach holiday ideal for the jetty. In general, you don't notice the size of the hotel with over 400 rooms.

I did a job at the hotel – so in three weeks I went on vacation for two weeks and worked for a week. This works very well at the Mövenpick Resort because there is reliable WiFi almost everywhere. Mövenpick Resort Soma Bay experiences reviews reviews travelogue
I did a job at the hotel – so in three weeks I went on vacation for two weeks and worked for a week. This works very well at the Mövenpick Resort because there is reliable WiFi almost everywhere.

Because I couldn't stay away from work for three weeks, I did a small workation - so I spent two weeks vacation and another week with my laptop and worked. Workations can be a promising opportunity to combine the benefits of vacation with the opportunity to work from another location. While I was writing some texts with a cappuccino flat rate, my partner continued to relax on the beach.

The Mövenpick Resort Soma Bay and the all-inclusive offer were particularly suitable for this. So I always had enough coffee, snacks and plenty of sunshine while I was working. In such a working atmosphere, you can work in a particularly inspired way.

Of course, no holiday in Egypt is complete without it Diving to go. I also did ten dives with the dive center of Scuba World Divers, which is located directly on the beach of the hotel (Interview with Scuba World Divers). Off the coast of Soma Bay and a few kilometers south of Safaga are some of the most beautiful coral reefs in the Red Sea. They can be reached quickly and easily from the Mövenpick Resort Soma Bay. Accordingly, I took the opportunity to do a few half-day trips with the dive center and was with them at the notorious wreck of the Salem Express.

The Mövenpick Resort Soma Bay has a total of 418 rooms and suites, all of which are modern and comfortably furnished. Overall, the Mövenpick Resort Soma Bay offers the right room for every taste and every budget. It is therefore the perfect place for a relaxed and luxurious holiday on the Red Sea. However, the hotel also has rooms that are completely without a balcony or terrace. When booking, you should make sure to choose a room with a balcony or terrace. Whether you want to pay the extra charge for pool or sea views is of course up to you. But I wouldn’t go without an outdoor area – unless you really don’t need it.

The best way to enjoy dinner is at a romantic dinner at Italian on the beach or at the Oriental Restaurant.

The Mövenpick Resort Soma Bay has several restaurants and bars that offer guests tastes from all over the world. The main restaurant, Bay View, is the culinary heart of the resort and offers breakfast, lunch and dinner in buffet style. For a more intimate atmosphere, the resort offers the Al Jazeera à la carte restaurant, which serves delicious oriental dishes. I particularly liked the mezze, which, as is so often the case in Arabic countries, is served as a starter. For pizza, pasta and other Italian delicacies, the Il Pesce restaurant is the place to be.

There was some criticism of the hotel's food in the hotel reviews and also on site by other guests. I tend not to understand the complaints. And I am by no means uncritical when it comes to food and drinks. The food at the Mövenpick Resort was always fresh and varied. Despite a lot of exercise, I gained six kilograms in the three weeks – that speaks for itself.

Movenpick Resort Soma Bay Reviews

As already mentioned, the reviews are quite mixed. On the one hand, guests who have visited the Mövenpick Resort Soma Bay give the resort very good ratings on average. Many guests praise the resort's beautiful location right on the beach, the beautiful gardens, and the friendly and helpful staff. The rooms are also described by many guests as comfortable and well equipped. A positive review on Google, which we would also agree with, is as follows:

We cannot understand the negative reviews. Maybe it's because the hotel management changed recently.
Top facility and great food. Extremely nice and courteous staff with excellent German or English knowledge!
You should know in advance that long drinks and coffee are not up to the standard you are used to.
We are more than enthusiastic and would love to come back.

Google review

However, some guests have also voiced criticism. The food in particular is mentioned as a weak point. We can't understand this criticism at all - but tastes are different - and if someone doesn't like the food, you have to accept that. During our stay, the resort was working on two new Asian restaurants, which unfortunately were not yet open when we were there.

Overall, however, most guests seem to have enjoyed their stay at the Mövenpick Resort Soma Bay and would recommend the resort.

My personal review of the hotel

I have now visited a lot of hotels in Egypt and can therefore compare well. The Mövenpick Waterpark Resort & Spa Soma Bay is certainly not perfect and you have to make compromises in a few places. The bottom line is that it is my price-performance winner - and that's why I give it a favorable 9 out of 10 points.

Strengths and weaknesses of the Mövenpick Resort Soma Bay

The Mövenpick Soma Bay has a number of strengths and weaknesses. The strengths clearly outweigh the negatives, so we absolutely recommend the hotel. Particularly noteworthy is the beautiful hotel complex, which reminded us a bit of a golf course. The resort is also very pleasantly located in the middle of the bay.

The hotel has beautiful gardens that reminded me a bit of a well maintained golf course. Photo: Sascha Tegtmeyer Mövenpick Resort Soma Bay experiences reviews reviews travelogue

You can take walks both north and south. But the landscape could be a little more beautiful. There are some ruins in the area. We really liked our room. But it was also one of the better rooms, which was closer to the beach and had a large balcony. But be careful: there are also rooms in the hotel without a balcony.

One of the big disadvantages of the hotel is that it can be quite loud and busy at times. Many sellers try to tell you about their products - but that's often the case in Egypt. On the other hand, there is a relaxation area on the beach, which is very practical.

Mövenpick Resort Soma Bay – Strengths

  • The beautiful hotel complex and the central location in the middle of the bay right on the beach with a view of the Red Sea.
  • The range of entertainment options and amenities is extensive, including several pools, a spa, various restaurants and bars, and a kids' club.
  • Most of the staff is particularly friendly and helpful (the exception proves the rule).
  • The rooms are comfortable and well equipped.
  • The food was very good and varied - even after three weeks we didn't get bored.
  • Very good diving school from Scubaworld Divers on the beach of the resort.
  • Very, very cheap price – we only paid around 1000 euros per person for three weeks.

Mövenpick Resort Soma Bay – Weaknesses

  • The area around the hotel is not ideal for walking and jogging, but it is okay.
  • It can be quite noisy and turbulent on the beach. In the neighboring Hotel Caribbean there is a party all day long, which is acoustically resonated.
  • In some things not always at the 5 star level.
  • Some rooms do not have a balcony.
  • The jetty is not yet finished and you can only enter half of it (as of December 2022).

Mövenpick Resort Soma Bay experiences and reviews – the perfect resort on the Red Sea?

My conclusion

The Mövenpick Resort Soma Bay has become one of our favorites on the Red Sea - the winner of our hearts. The hotel is anything but perfect, it definitely has its flaws. In particular, it can be quite loud. But the overall package is right: Chef Roger Rached's food is really good. The staff is friendly and attentive. And the hotel complex is very nice. As a diver you have an excellent diving center right in the hotel. And the price-performance ratio is unbeatable.

The bottom line is that we are more than satisfied with this hotel and can only warmly recommend it to you. The resort now has a water park - it has also changed its name and is now called Mövenpick Waterpark Resort & Spa Soma Bay. Unfortunately, we cannot say to what extent this will affect the prices and the target group in the hotel.
