Beach holiday tips – the perfect trip to the sea?

by

Summer, sun, beach and sea: For many travelers, beach vacation is one of the most popular and relaxed ways to go on vacation. Many imagine that they are lying on a hammock under a palm tree on the beach with a cocktail in hand, letting their souls dangle and forgetting everyday life. To cool off in between, jump into the crystal-clear, turquoise water of a tropical sea. A vacation on the beach can actually be like this - but it can also end completely differently. Where can you go on a beach holiday? And what are the dangers? We give you many valuable beach vacation tips for the perfect trip to the sea.

Sun, beach, palm trees and sea – this is how many vacationers imagine the perfect vacation. And in fact, a beach vacation is probably one of the most relaxing and enjoyable ways to experience a trip. If everything is perfect, travelers return to everyday life deeply relaxed and perfectly recovered. Who wouldn't want to spend their free time in a hammock under a palm tree with a delicious cocktail in hand? Beach vacation is simply the most relaxing Beach from all.

That is in many destinations also possible. However, there are a few things you should take into account when booking your beach holiday so that you don't end up with a nasty surprise. Because what always looks so beautiful in photos and in the catalog can turn out to be a really bad deal in reality: there is more garbage floating in the water than fish, tourists bask in the sand like sardines in a can and pushy salespeople annoy vacationers permanent and prevent you from relaxing.

Unfortunately, there is hardly a travel destination today that doesn't have a few disadvantages. We still want to give you a few valuable beach holiday tips and general holiday tips and show you where and how you can have an excellent beach holiday.

Beach holiday tips and tricks for the most wonderful time of the year

If you want to experience a perfect holiday on the coast, you should consider a few beach holiday tips and tricks. To ensure that your vacation is truly relaxing and relaxing, you should prepare well. This applies to both a beach holiday in Germany and a trip to the most beautiful coasts in the world. We have a few important tips for you!

If you want to experience a perfect holiday on the coast, you should consider a few beach holiday tips and tricks. Photo: Sascha Tegtmeyer

1. Find out about fees before booking

Have you booked the trip and think you have paid for everything? Not necessarily. Dream beaches can cost a lot of money. Between three and ten euros per day are charged on some beaches. A 14-day vacation for a family of four can quickly add up to more than 100 euros.

You should therefore find out in advance whether additional costs will be charged at the beach of your choice. Sometimes it is a spa tax, other times it is a fee for the nature park. And to avoid any unpleasant surprises on your beach holiday, you should simply inform yourself in advance and consider whether you are willing to accept the additional costs.

2. Beware of travel destinations without a beach

Another topic that you should find out about in advance is the question of whether there really is a beach at your holiday destination. Many travelers naturally assume that if there is a sea, there is a beach. But that's not even remotely true. Many coasts are rocky!

And in some destinations beaches are advertised that are not worthy of the name. For example, there are Greek islands or volcanic islands in the Atlantic, which simply do not have a beach where you really want to spend a whole vacation. So, if you're on beach vacation, check in advance where there really is a beach. This is by no means a matter of course.

3. Bans on your dream beach

The German coasts are full of bans. “Please do not enter” is the most harmless ban. You are often not allowed to set up a beach shelter, dogs are not allowed on the beach and sand castles should not be built too high or too deep. In other countries, there are sometimes problems if you want to go to the beach in a bikini or even nude.

On a Maldives local island, you are not allowed to walk around uncovered. This is common practice in the Arab world. Here, too, you should find out in good time what customs apply at your holiday destination and on your dream beach. In the worst case, there is a risk of fines and restrictions. A beach vacation can quickly go to waste!

4. Beware of wrong expectations

The worst faux pas on your beach vacation are false expectations. In the travel catalog or on the tour operator's website there was a picture of a wonderful, secluded sandy beach with turquoise water. We know several such holiday destinations that are always shown in photos as wonderful and deserted and are always completely overcrowded with tourists.

Then you arrive at your destination and on the supposedly dream beach the tourists jostle between beach chairs and parasols, while you can't get a foot on the ground. This must be every traveller’s nightmare. So you should research this point in advance to see whether your beach is possibly the most visited in the country. This will save you from unpleasant surprises in the end.

Holidays without mass tourism in Europe – where can you still find lonely beaches?

That's one thing about vacationing in Europe without mass tourism: we hardly have any real insider tip travel destinations anymore. As soon as a real insider tip comes along, someone writes something about it on the Internet - and it's no longer an insider tip.

To put it simply, word has already gotten around about every great travel destination in our latitudes and is therefore frequently visited by vacationers and tourists, often from all over the world. Spain, Italy and Greece are - to put it diplomatically - well visited in the summer months.

The Mediterranean is the hotspot

People from all over Europe flock to the Mediterranean to spend a relaxing beach holiday. If you're still looking for travel destinations without mass tourism in Europe, you'll really have to look for a long time. You could certainly try it with numerous coastal sections in Denmark or in Scandinavia in general. In addition, Eastern Europe is still good for a trip, but tends to be a little less equipped with beach areas.

You could perhaps discover one or two secluded beaches on the Black Sea in Bulgaria and Romania. The Algarve in Portugal is also likely to be a little less crowded in summer than comparable beaches on the Spanish mainland or the Mediterranean islands. Especially on the Mediterranean islands, it is difficult to spend a beach holiday in summer without mass tourism in Europe.

I was looking for lonely bays on Mallorca

I once tried to discover lonely bays on Mallorca - and found that these small and idyllic beaches were completely overcrowded. Basically, insider tips are likely to be found wherever the tourist focus is not quite as strong. Islands without tourism can be found in the Adriatic off the coast of Croatia. There are still very quiet and lonely islands that are not visited by too many holidaymakers.

Holidaymakers can also spend a wonderful beach holiday in Germany. The coasts of the North Sea and Baltic Sea are in no way inferior to the popular travel destinations on the Mediterranean. Photo: Sascha Tegtmeyer

Germany – Beach vacation on the Baltic Sea and North Sea

Holidaymakers can also spend a wonderful beach holiday in Germany. The coasts of the North Sea and Baltic Sea are in no way inferior to the popular travel destinations on the Mediterranean. The Danish and Polish coasts are also ideal for spending a relaxing holiday by the sea. In Germany, holiday resorts such as Sankt Peter-Ording, Sylt and Norderney on the North Sea and Scharbeutz, Timmendorfer Strand, Fehmarn and Rügen are particularly popular.

Above all, you benefit from the proximity - most travel destinations can be easily reached with your own car. This means you are mobile in your holiday destination and can combine your beach holiday with some culture, adventure and discoveries.

Beach vacation on the Mediterranean – Mallorca, Sardinia, Crete or Cyprus?

However, I am of the opinion that tourist utilization in the holiday destination is not the only criterion. Of course it is not nice when the beach is full to the brim or the tourists kick their feet flat. Nevertheless, there are numerous beach vacation tips for Europe that enable an unforgettable vacation on the dream beach and where a quiet vacation by the sea is possible. In particular, the island holiday in Europe on the Mediterranean, on the North Sea and Baltic Sea as well as on the Canary Islands enable incredibly great short-haul trips, which are not overly expensive.

In my opinion, Sardinia has the most beautiful beaches on the Mediterranean (travel report) - it would always be my favorite destination for a beach holiday on the Mediterranean. The bays of Mallorca (insider tips) are also incredibly beautiful, but you should definitely not travel to the island during the holiday season. Crete and Cyprus are incredibly diverse islands where you can combine a beach holiday with sightseeing.

Malta has relatively few beaches - here too, a combination of beach and sights would be very conceivable, as the overall package is right in Malta, Gozo and Comino. Overall, a beach vacation on the Mediterranean is one of the best ways to not have to travel far and have a great vacation.

The most beautiful beaches in the world - and how to find them

There are such wonderful beaches around the world that it would probably take you a lifetime to explore even a fraction of them. The criteria for the most beautiful beaches in the world are always the same, regardless of whether they are in Southeast Asia or Alaska:

  • fine, white sand with palm trees
  • crystal clear, blue or turquoise water
  • few other people (or maybe just nice, relaxed people?)
  • an extremely high recovery factor
  • Cleanliness and little garbage

Such beaches can be found in many places around the globe - including in Germany and Central Europe. The most beautiful beach I have ever seen is on the Mediterranean. Everything is perfect on this beach and I would travel there again and again to spend a relaxing time in this bay. You can read which beach this is in the following paragraph in my personal ranking. There tend to be a lot of beautiful beaches in Southeast Asia and the Indian Ocean.

In these regions of the world, one beach is actually more beautiful than the other. Beach vacation fans who are really looking for one of the most beautiful beaches in the world can travel to Mauritius, Thailand or Indonesia. In all these countries you will be overwhelmed by the beauty of the beaches. However, the beaches are very full and overcrowded in many places, so you may have to look a little longer for a secluded beach.

Holiday insider tip - How about a beach holiday in Estonia?

A beach holiday in Estonia? Very few people have the country in northeastern Europe on their radar when it comes to a relaxing holiday by the sea - and that's exactly why it's a real insider holiday tip. In Estonia there are 3.700 kilometers of often natural and untouched beaches in the bays of the Baltic Sea coast.

The infrastructure of the beaches is great: you will find toilets and water rescue stations in many places. The absolute hidden spot is currently the island's insider tip Hiiumaa - an island with lots of forest, wonderful beaches and lakes inside. Ideal for an island holiday in the Baltics.

Dangers on a beach holiday – what do you have to pay attention to?

You may be thinking: what should go wrong on a beach vacation? We have put together some beach vacation tips for your safety. TatsächlichThere is actually quite a lot that you should consider. At least three points are extremely important if you want to relax undisturbed on the beach:

  • Beware of thieves and criminals
  • Be careful when swimming and bathing
  • Be careful with local regulations

Criminals and thieves on the beach

I don't have to say much about the first point. Where it is beautiful and where many vacationers bustle on the beach, there are also long fingers, brazen salespeople and criminals who want anyour money or your valuables. Ideally, you should have theft-proof bags with you to protect yourself from long fingers - or leave as many of your valuables in the hotel safe as possible.

Dangers when bathing and swimming

The greatest danger is on the beach when bathing and swimming. Even if the water looks completely harmless and inviting, it may be the case that there are invisible currents that can easily pull you into the open sea or tear under water. You should therefore stay on a guarded beach section and go into the water if possible. An inflatable life buoy that you can wear like a belt while swimming can also help.

Local regulations should be adhered to as far as possible. In some travel countries you may otherwise face draconian penalties. For example, on some beaches in the Maldives it is not allowed to swim in a bikini. Cigarette butts in the sand can also cost you incredibly dearly - for example in Thailand. So, especially in exotic countries, you should definitely find out before your beach vacation which customs you should definitely adhere to.

An anti-theft backpack is also incredibly practical. Photo: Sascha Tegtmeyer

The right travel equipment for your perfect beach vacation

There is an incredible amount of great travel equipment and vacation gadgets for your beach vacation that you should definitely have with you in your suitcase. These include an inflatable sofa “AirLounger”, appropriate water toys for the beach and the sea, an inflatable kayak or stand up paddle board, a picnic blanket and an incredibly practical theft-proof backpack like the Pacsafe Venturesafe X40 (test).

I would never go on a beach vacation without a pair of high-quality headphones like the Bang and Olufsen Beoplay H9 3rd generation (test) or the AirPods Pro (test). A high-quality outdoor smartwatch is always with you on the beach, such as the Garmin fenix 6X Pro (test) or the Apple Watch Do Series 5 (test). Basically, there are an incredible number of things here that will make your vacation on the beach more pleasant and that I personally always take with me every time I stay on the beach.

Beach vacation – tips for the perfect trip to the sea

My conclusion

Beach holidays are still one of the most beautiful types of holidays. Actually, a beach holiday is the epitome and ideal of a relaxing holiday. No other travel theme allows you to switch off and relax as beautifully as in a hammock with a cool drink under a palm tree on the beach. Many travel destinations actually make it possible to live up to this ideal. The destinations in the Caribbean, Southeast Asia and the Indian Ocean simply offer the opportunity for a beach holiday par excellence.

You can also experience an unforgettable holiday on the beach on the Mediterranean, in our local area on the North Sea and Baltic Sea or in Scandinavia. To ensure that the trip is really relaxing, you should follow our beach holiday tips. Protect your valuables from thieves, be careful when swimming and follow local regulations. Then nothing stands in the way of a deep, relaxing holiday on the beach.

  1. We can also recommend Eastern Europe for a nice beach holiday. Four years ago we spent two wonderful weeks on the Black Sea in Bulgaria. The other day we had the idea of having our own beach house built, which we can visit whenever we want. However, we still have to agree on a specific region.
