Running in the desert?

My experiences with jogging in Egypt

I can't do without exercise when I travel – especially running. That's why I've always been jogging in Egypt through the desert to maintain my fitness level over a two-week vacation in the land of the pharaohs. Most hotels and resorts that I have stayed at have a small gym. And if you want, you can also go there on a treadmill or elliptical trainer and do your workout. However, I have to say that I don't like to travel thousands of kilometers to go to a gym.

So I went jogging outdoors and basically walked through the desert. You need a little more preparation for this than if you go running at home, as jogging in Egypt is a bit more demanding for various reasons. Nevertheless, I always managed my five to ten kilometers on different running routes - of course less than at home.

Of course, the heat and the sun are particularly challenging. That's why I always ran in the hour before sunset, because then when I'm jogging in Egypt it's not quite as hot and the sun isn't as bright. However, you only have a short time window, as the hotel security forces will ask you as a jogger to be back in the hotel complex after dark. But that in itself is not a problem.

I always found the desert dust that settles in my lungs while jogging on holiday in Egypt particularly unpleasant. Since it is usually very windy on the Red Sea, a lot of dust is stirred up, which you inhale particularly intensively when jogging. If you find this very unpleasant, you can simply put a cloth over your mouth or wear a face mask, as you would do on a quad tour through the desert, for example.

My highlight was always jumping into the hotel pool after a run on the Red Sea or taking a quick swim in the sea - that's totally refreshing and relaxing and ensures the maximum recovery factor.

Running Tips – What should you consider when jogging in Egypt?

  • Since jogging in the desert in Egypt can be very circulatory, you should, if in doubt, have a check-up with your doctor before you travel.
  • Plan your run in advance and see which routes you can run, as many jogging routes in Egypt are very rocky and there are always deep potholes.
  • Run either early in the morning or in the evening hours because it's not quite as hot then.
  • Avoid walking in the dark.
  • Be sure to stay on the safe and guarded routes near the hotels and tourist spots.
  • Make sure you bring enough to drink and stay hydrated.
  • Orientate yourself while running with Google Maps or a similar program.
  • If possible, run in pairs or in a group in case complications should arise.
  • Follow the instructions of the security forces.

For the run, I recommend the golden hour in the evening - then it's not so hot and it looks nice too.

Desert, hotel complex or fitness room – where to go jogging in Egypt?

If you want to go jogging on vacation in Egypt, you have various options for running. The easiest option is certainly the hotel's gym. You can also go running in the hotel complex, as most of them Hotels in Egypt are very spacious and you can easily rack up kilometers in the facility. But of course the most fun is jogging in the desert in Egypt or running along the coast of the Red Sea.

1. Running in the hotel gym

Every hotel has its own fitness room, where you can often go jogging on a treadmill. However, it has to be said that one has not traveled thousands of kilometers to then train in a stuffy gym. That should really only be the solution if there is no other way. However, the fitness rooms also differ from hotel to hotel and maybe you are lucky that you have a well-equipped room with a top running track in your hotel - in this case you could really think about going on the treadmill in the morning before breakfast.

2. Jogging in the hotel complex

It is not without reason that many hotel complexes in Egypt use golf carts to move around within the area. The hotels and resorts are often very spacious and you have the opportunity to do a few laps there in a relaxed manner. However, one has to say: If you want to run ten kilometers, you have to do a few laps. So rather something for those who exercise who only want to jog a kilometer or two.

3. Jogging on the beach, coast or through the desert

The Jogging on the beach Egypt is of course the most fun. Nice along the coast of the Red Sea, sprint across the desert and take advantage of the freedom of the vast, deserted areas. That's how I know jogging in Egypt when I go for a run. I've jogged in Marsa Alam, Makadi Bay, Hurghada, Safaga and Sharm El Sheikh and I have to say: where there's a will, there's a running route. All at your own risk, of course!

Going for a run on the Red Sea – is jogging dangerous on holiday in Egypt?

Yes, running in the Red Sea is very safe. When jogging on holiday in Egypt, you can't do much wrong if you stay within your physical limits and don't behave recklessly. I've always felt safe jogging in Egypt. The security guards of the hotels and resorts are very careful who comes and who goes. So they know when you're jogging in the desert and immediately notice if you're not back in time.

There are also a number of guards around the hotels and tourist resorts who keep an eye on you as a jogger. The cops at these stations are usually super friendly and give you an intense sense of security. In addition, you should not jog alone if possible and it is more fun to jog through the desert with two people anyway.

Jogging in Egypt experience report – walking through the desert?

My detailed conclusion

You can wonderfully continue your running training on your holiday in Egypt. You only have to check out the environmental conditions on site. Most of the hotels and resorts are right on the coast and you can usually go jogging right on the Red Sea beach or at least walk above a rocky coast. Above all, you have to be considerate of restricted military areas and police guard posts, which are often located in the immediate vicinity of the hotels. However, the security guards will know you after two workouts at the latest - and it will always give you an additional feeling of security.

On the other hand, when jogging in Egypt, you need to pay attention to the local weather conditions. Since it can be very hot and dry, you should drink enough and, if possible, always have a filled water bottle with you when you go running on holiday in Egypt. In addition, the desert dust that is blown up is a problem. You sometimes breathe it in very heavily while running. Therefore, you may want to wear a mask or put a bandana over your mouth and nose.

Basically, jogging on holiday in Egypt is a nice change and of course helps ensure that you don't completely lose your fitness after 14 days of all-inclusive holiday. In any case, I have had very good experiences with jogging in Egypt so far.
