My love story with sports watches began around the turn of the millennium, when I bought a digital heart rate monitor with a chest strap - and used it to record my daily workout while jogging. But my love for sports watches only really took off when the first usable smartwatch was released in 2015. Since then, sports watches have significantly changed the way we do our workouts and use watches. On this topic page about sports watches, I have listed my current articles about sports watches and sporty smartwatches for you and also give you helpful information, tips and recommendations about the useful wearables.
Current articles about sports watches and sports smartwatches
There are many sports watches. In principle, any timer that is somewhat robust and can be worn while exercising is suitable - regardless of whether it costs 100 or 100.000 euros. Time measurement, stopwatch, heart rate measurement or GPS – sports watches and water sports features are a topic in themselves: What do the robust timepieces have to be able to do?
Not only athletes, but also active vacationers and travelers swear by it: sports watches are a complicated little microcosm in themselves. They are not only available in every price range, but also with a wide range of features. What they all have in common: They help the athlete train more effectively. For the current models from major manufacturers, scientific findings are also consulted when developing new models. But what exactly should you pay attention to? What features should a sports watch definitely have?
Sports watches – measure heart rate
Athletes rarely use sports watches for no reason: For example, athletes try to use the watch to measure their heart rate during training and keep it at a certain level in order to stimulate fat burning. Fat burning often takes place during endurance sports, so heart rate measurement is one of the central features of a sports watch. Endurance athletes in particular have to measure their pulse rate in almost all sports, whether on land or on water.
Measuring your heart rate is also more than useful when jogging on the beach, where the strain mainly results from the resistance of the sand, and when surfing, where the pulse can skyrocket within seconds when moving in the surf: So Water sports enthusiasts always know whether they are in the optimal heart rate zone for their training. Measuring your heart rate with a sports watch is of course also very useful in everyday life - both during everyday activity and to measure your resting heart rate.
Sports watches must be able to calculate the aerobic range
A good sports watch is the perfect companion in all situations: As a rule, you not only wear it when training, but also use the sports watch as a daily companion. That's why in most cases a sports watch has to meet one criterion: it has to look stylish and be stable. But of course that is far from enough. The sports watch should record all important measurements that provide the body's vital signs.
Once you have set up the watch with the wearer's personal information such as gender, weight and age, the watch should take over straight away: it should record the optimal intensity of the fitness training and in this way help to dose the training correctly. Most current sports watches are high-performance computers that warn the wearer not to train with too little or too much intensity. This means that the trainee should remain in the aerobic range.
Most sports watches are equipped with a variety of sensors for measuring movement and heart rate in order to calculate the aerobic range in which you can train optimally. The chest strap has clearly had its day. Earlier watches still required a strap that the athlete had to put around his chest. Today's watches measure all the necessary information directly on the wrist. However, some models of sports watches still use the chest strap and justify this by saying that the measurement is simply more precise.
Sports watches with GPS – actually mandatory
Another feature that a sports watch should definitely have is GPS. GPS stands for Global Position System. It stands for meter-precise location and distance measurement via satellite. This has many advantages: On the one hand, you can immediately see how far you have covered. On the other hand, many sports watches are now also suitable for navigation during training.
On the one hand, you can have your running routes recorded on a map, and on the other hand, you always have your precise running route available so you can see progress. A GPS module is more than a nice-to-have feature. It is now a common standard for sports watches.

What the watches for athletes should at least be able to do
No matter whether it's about a workout or the next vacation trip, a sports watch is the perfect companion for everyday life and all special situations. Whether jogging on the beach or hiking in the Himalayas, a sports watch records all of the wearer's important vital signs and provides important information on how the athlete behaves optimally in his preferred activity. Now in all common sports - including jogging, surfing and horse riding. Anyone who is active wants to record their data and then evaluate it. That's why a sports watch should have the following features:
- Pulse measurement directly on your wrist
- GPS distance measurement
- Motion sensors to measure steps
- Possibility to enter personal data such as age and weight
- Bluetooth with connection option to smartphone or computer
- App for computer or smartphone to read out the data
- Offer evaluation functions and analysis for the fitness data
Ranking – The best sports watches and sports smartwatches
The ranking reflects my personal opinion and experiences about the best sports watches. I tested most of the models and based the rankings on my assessment and my smartwatch experiences. Of course, there may be differences depending on your personal preferences and budget.
You can use this list, which I am constantly expanding and changing, as a reference for your research to find the best smartwatch for you. You should pay attention to these sports watch functions
My sports watch is my daily companion that I use during my numerous workouts. The sporty smartwatch is used even more than my smartphone. That's why I always use a very current model that meets the latest technical standards. What functions should modern fitness watches and sporty smartwatches have? Below I have put together a clear table for you that lists the most important features of current sports watches.
Smartwatch attributes | Technology used |
---|---|
Main material | Sports watches are often made of titanium, stainless steel, carbon or plastic. Titanium is currently state-of-the-art because it is particularly light and robust. |
Cover glass material | Mineral glass is often used in cheaper smartwatches, while more durable materials such as sapphire glass or Corning® Gorilla® Glass are often used in more expensive models. Sapphire glass is particularly scratch-resistant and is often used in high-priced watches. |
Bezel material | The bezel of the smartwatch, i.e. the frame around the display, is an important design element and at the same time offers functionality. It is usually made of materials such as stainless steel, titanium or aluminum, depending on the housing material chosen for the smartwatch. Some models also offer ceramic or carbon fiber bezels. |
Bracelet material | Depending on the model and features, smartwatch bands can be made of various materials, including leather, metal, rubber, and synthetic fibers such as nylon. Some manufacturers also offer special wristbands that are designed for specific activities such as sports or swimming and have special properties such as sweat or water resistance. |
Display | The display of a smartwatch plays an important role as it represents the interface between the user and the watch. Most smartwatches today have a high-resolution display. AMOLED or miniLED displays are often used here, which offer high resolution and color quality. AMOLED displays are characterized by color brilliance and high contrast. |
Touchscreen | Most current sports watches and sports smartwatches rely on a reliable touchscreen that enables intuitive and quick operation. Many manufacturers have optimized their touchscreens specifically for use during sports to ensure smooth operation even when sweating or raining. |
Color variants of the smartwatch | Modern sports smartwatches and sports watches are not only functional and powerful, but also stylish and available in many colors. The color selection ranges from simple and elegant colors such as white and black to trendy and eye-catching color combinations such as rose gold and white or silver and dark gray. |
Clock functions | Today's sports watches have the typical watch functions such as time, automatic summer time change, alarm, timer, stopwatch, sunrise/sunset. In addition to the basic watch functions, many current sports watches offer other practical functions that are particularly useful for sporting activities. These include GPS tracking, heart rate measurement, calorie consumption, pedometer and distance measurement. |
Fitness tracking | Fitness tracking is one of the main features of sports smartwatches. Current models offer a variety of functions to monitor the health and fitness of the wearer. These include, for example, measuring energy levels, oxygen saturation and stress levels as well as recording heart rate, ECG, breathing rate and sleep analysis. |
Activity features | Activity tracking with pedometer, calorie consumption, floors, distance covered and intensity minutes is now an absolute standard for all sports smartwatches. These functions are now standard on most sports smartwatches. A pedometer is a fundamental part of activity tracking and records the number of steps taken during the day. |
Main areas of smartwatch use | The range of sports smartwatches is diverse and tailored to the needs of different athletes. Most smartwatches offer a wide range of sports, from running and walking, hiking, golf and cycling to skiing, snowboarding, cross-country skiing, stand-up paddling, surfing, sailing, rowing and swimming. |
Indoor tracking functions | Indoor training has become an important part of daily fitness and many sports smartwatches have recognized this. They offer comprehensive tracking features for workouts such as strength training, cardio, cross-training, stepping, stair climbing, rowing, yoga, Pilates and breathing exercises. Users can also follow training animations directly on the watch to improve their technique and movements. |
outdoor features | Most current sports smartwatches also offer a variety of outdoor functions that can be particularly useful for outdoor sports such as hiking, mountaineering or camping. These include functions such as navigation with the reverse function, in which the smartwatch automatically determines the return route and shows the wearer the return route. |
Heart rate measurement on the wrist | Optical heart sensors use light to detect changes in blood flow through the skin and measure the heartbeat. Electric heart sensors, on the other hand, use electrodes to measure the heart's electrical signals and create an ECG. |
Pulse oximeter | A pulse oximeter is now standard equipment on many modern smartwatches and sports watches. This function measures oxygen saturation in the blood, which is an important indicator of physical fitness and health. For example, by measuring oxygen levels in the blood, the smartwatch can show signs of sleep apnea or other breathing problems. |
water resistance | Most current smartwatches offer a water resistance of 5 or 10 ATM and are therefore suitable for swimming, snorkeling, showering and washing your hands. They are therefore not suitable for diving. With some models like that Apple Watch Ultra or some models from Suunto and Garmin can even be scuba diving to 40 meters. |
Battery Life | The battery life of a sports smartwatch depends on various factors such as usage intensity, model type and activated functions. In general, smartwatches consume more power than special sports watches. A good sports smartwatch should last at least a whole day with intensive use, i.e. around 18 hours. |
Position tracking | Many sports smartwatches today use GPS, GLONASS and GALILEO to precisely determine the wearer's position. GPS is the best known and most widely used standard. GLONASS is the Russian counterpart to GPS and GALILEO is the European satellite navigation system. |
Sensors | Typical smartwatch sensors integrated into current sports watch models include an optical heart rate sensor, an electrical heart rate sensor, a pulse oximeter, a barometric altimeter, a compass, a gyroscope, an accelerometer, a pulse oximeter, and GPS. |
SmartWatch features | Sports watches and sports smartwatches usually have typical smartwatch functions such as telephony, notifications, SMS reply, calendar, weather, music functions, phone search and payment functions. There are some sports watches and sports smartwatches that offer additional special functions in addition to the typical smartwatch functions. |
Compatibility | There are essentially two different streams of smartwatches on the market. The first group includes the Apple Watch, previously only with the Apple iPhone compatible. The second group includes smartwatches running the Google Wear OS operating system, which are compatible with both Android and iOS devices. |
Connections | Most current sports watches and sports smartwatches connect to the smartphone via Bluetooth® to synchronize data and display notifications. ANT+® is another wireless transmission standard used by some sports watches and fitness trackers to communicate with external sensors such as heart rate monitors or bicycle speed sensors. |
Weight | A sports watch or smartwatch usually weighs between 30 and 60 grams. However, there are also models that are slightly heavier or lighter depending on size, material and functions. |

It is followed by the Garmin Forerunner 2,2 Music at some distance and with a grade of 245.

Which GPS sports watch?
An excellent GPS sports watch is the Apple Watch Series 5. It received a grade of 12 from Stiftung Warentest (2019/1,8 issue) for the accuracy of its measurement data and was chosen as the test winner among the smartwatches. The second precise smartwatch in the test was the Garmin Forerunner 245 Music.
Which watch for running and cycling?
The best multisport watches include the Garmin fenix 7 and the Garmin epix 2, which are excellent sports smartwatches for running and cycling. The Samsung Galaxy Watch and the Apple Watch very good because they deliver relatively precise measurement results. I'm getting very good results with that Apple Watch and Runtastic.
What is the best Garmin watch?
In my opinion, the Garmin fenix 7 and the Garmin epix 2 are the best Garmin watches because, as multisport smartwatches with many pre-installed apps, they are not only suitable for many sports, but also have an attractive appearance and the battery life is extended thanks to the solar panel. Another excellent Garmin watch for beginners is the Garmin Venu 2, which has a slightly smaller case, but also has a large range of functions and is significantly cheaper than the top model.
Which sports watch is the right one?
There are currently some excellent models on the sports watch market that are well worth a look. In principle, several factors play a role in the selection: functionality, appearance and quality as well as software. From that point of view, my favorites are those Apple Watch, the Garmin fenix, the Samsung Galaxy Watch, the Huawei Watch GT, the Polar Grit and the Suunto 9.
Which sports watch for cycling?
The Garmin Venu 2 is an excellent sports watch for cycling because the smartwatch has its own app for this sport. Also on the Apple Watch users will find a special workout for cycling outdoors - the pre-installed workouts on the Apple Watch are usually very precise.
Which watch for sports?
There are now a large number of high-quality fitness smartwatches that can be used as a watch for sports in a variety of ways. The most important feature of a watch for sports is the optical measurement of the heart rate directly on the wrist. Measuring the oxygen saturation in the blood is also very important. The question "Which watch for sports?" must be answered individually according to your own preferences. The current best watches for sports are (in my opinion) the current ones Apple Watch, the Garmin fenix models, the Garmin Venu and the Suunto 9.
Which is better - Polar or Garmin?
Both Polar and Garmin produce very high-quality and modern sports watches and sports smartwatches, which are currently getting a little bit better with each generation. In this respect, the decision for one of the manufacturers is purely a matter of taste. I tested the two top models from Garmin and Polar, the Polar Grit and the Garmin Fenix. In my tests, the Garmin fenix came out on top. In principle, however, both the smartwatches from Polar and Garmin are recommended.
What is better heart rate monitor or chest strap?
Wearing a chest strap while running is a very precise way of tracking your heart rate during sports such as jogging, running, cycling, and many other sports. Unfortunately, the belt has to be put on very tightly and precisely in order to measure the heart rate. Modern sports watches and sports smartwatches therefore use an optical heart sensor to measure the heart rate directly on the wrist. At first, this method may have been less precise. Optical heart rate measurement on the wrist is now so sophisticated that precise results can be achieved and a chest strap is no longer necessary. The Apple Watch Series 5 was awarded a top grade of 12 as test winner by Stiftung Warentest due to its precise measurement results in the 2019/1,8 test.
What is the best running watch?
I personally use the for running Apple Watch with Runtastic. For me it is the best running watch that reliably measures my heart rate, precisely records the distance covered and calculates my activity data very precisely so that I can get a realistic picture of my current fitness and progress with jogging. Other excellent running watches are the Garmin Forerunner, the Garmin Fenix, the Garmin Venu, the Suunto 7 and the Polar Vantage M.

What is the best polar watch?
The best Polar watch is the Polar Grit X, which I have tested extensively. It is designed as a multisport outdoor smartwatch and is very suitable for all sports outdoors and indoors. The sports watch is robust and functionally up to date.
Which fitness watch is good and cheap? What is a good fitness watch?
As a good and cheap fitness watch, I can think of several models: On the one hand, the Garmin Venu is well suited as a cheap fitness smartwatch. It has a large, up-to-date range of functions and modern technology. On the other hand, I like the Samsung Galaxy Watch Active 2 very much as a good and affordable fitness watch, as it also offers many current functions and at a comparatively low price. For Apple-Fans, on the other hand, have a predecessor to the current Apple Watch , which is usually offered at a reduced price.
Which fitness watch for beginners?

Which smartwatch can EKG?
The recording of an EKG is with the Apple Watch Series 4 to Apple Watch Series 7 possible. The recording was praised by experts and doctors and called accurate. However, it does not replace a check-up at the doctor's, but can only be seen as an additional backup that serves as an additional motivational aid to see a doctor if the worst comes to the worst. A smartwatch with an ECG should not be used for self-diagnosis. Other manufacturers such as Samsung now also offer smartwatches with an ECG.

Which smartwatch lasts the longest?
Garmin smartwatches like the Garmin fenix 7 and Garmin epix 2 last the longest. Depending on how you use it, the battery lasts between 1,5 days and several weeks. The battery life is also extended by a solar charging lens under the display. Basically, it has to be said that the battery life of a smartwatch is very closely dependent on the intensity of use.
When it comes to the durability of a smartwatch, i.e. the entire period of use, the products of all major manufacturers tend to be extremely reliable. In addition, buyers in many countries have warranty claims if there are technical problems. In addition, you can often extend the warranty with special options. Nevertheless, a smartwatch is a commodity and every watch can break at any time.
Which smartwatch has an Always On Display?
Numerous smartwatches now have an Always On Display, in which the display remains permanently lit and does not switch off. In particular, the smaller version in 40mm is recommended here. Samsung, on the other hand, has the smaller Samsung Galaxy Watch in its range, which also makes a feminine impression. And Garmin also has several very feminine models in its range with the Venu, the Venu 2, the vivofit and the Lily.

How long does a smartwatch battery last?
How long the battery of a smartwatch lasts depends primarily on the intensity of use. If only the time can be displayed, the smartwatch can be used longer without charging, while intensive tracking or heart rate measurement will greatly reduce the battery life.
