At a very relaxed price, athletes and outdoor fans get quality Made in Finland and many up-to-date functions. What can the mid-range sports watch do in my detailed Suunto 5 Peak test? Who is it suitable for? What strengths and weaknesses does she have? I have compiled my experiences for you in this test report.

The Suunto 5 Peak is the Finnish manufacturer's mid-range - slightly larger and more functional than that Suunto 3 and at the same time smaller, lighter and cheaper than the top model Suunto 7 and the high-end model Suunto 9 Peak, which has now also been released in a luxury version. It is aimed at athletes, outdoor fans and travelers who want the most important current smartwatch functions in a light, compact and at the same time robust Sports Watch search.
The smartwatch is not only ideal for active vacationers and everyone who moves around a lot on vacation: With only 39 grams and a straightforward design, the sports watch is ideal for everyone who relies on an elegant and minimalist appearance. Too many sports smartwatches are currently on the market that are overloaded with new functions and are getting bigger and heavier. Fortunately, the Suunto 5 Peak bucks this trend. I checked the small and light sports watch in detail in my Suunto 5 Peak test.

Suunto 5 Peak test – my impression of the sports smartwatch
The Suunto 5 Peak comes with a positive surprise straight out of the box: The sports smartwatch is not only smaller and more delicate than expected, but also looks really elegant in the dark green. Full marks are given for the pure appearance. Meanwhile, I have installed the Suunto app for iOS on the iPhone, which connects directly to the watch with just two taps, installs the latest update and transfers some essential data directly from the smartphone. The sports watch is ready for use after just a few minutes.
The operation at the push of a button is somewhat unusual. However, the compact display doesn't leave much room for extensive touch gestures. Operation with the five buttons is child's play and you can navigate through the menus and adjust the settings very intuitively. After unpacking, less than five minutes had passed before I started recording my heart rate for the first time and started my first workout as a test. Of course I want to try out the sporty smartwatch for my Suunto 5 Peak test in different situations - for example when jogging and stand-up paddling, but of course also in everyday life.
The first impression of the smartwatch in my Suunto 5 Peak test is clear: a small, delicate sports watch with a minimalist design that is particularly ideal for smartwatch beginners and anyone who wants a watch that is as light as possible and that they can hardly feel during training . The model is certainly not for real technology fans, as the touch function lacks the sharpness of the AMOLED. If you want the full range of functions on your sports smartwatch, you should go for it Suunto 7 or Suunto 9 Peak fall back on.

Suunto 5 Peak - What the manufacturer says about the sports watch
Suunto President Heikki Norta believes that the Suunto 5 Peak will appeal to many athletes:
I have no doubt that the Suunto 5 Peak will be very successful with its ultra light weight, slim design, extensive functionality and affordable price. That's what we wanted to achieve when we created this Uhr have designed. Everything an outdoor athlete needs for their next adventure.
Heikki Norta, President of Suunto
Suunto 5 Peak Test - Who is the sports watch suitable for?
The Suunto 5 Peak is ideal for anyone who wants a light and simple smartwatch to wear on their wrist during sports, outdoor activities and as a companion on vacation and when traveling. The watch is so light that you quickly forget you're even wearing it. The elegant design with the silver, anthracite and green tones makes the sports watch a stylish accessory.
The most important sports are supported, so that very different preferences are catered for. These include running, hiking, walking, cycling or trail running. Personally, I rediscovered the heatmaps during the Suunto 5 Peak test and was able to find new running routes that I had previously overlooked in my everyday life as an athlete. The app shows popular routes that other athletes take.
Various outdoor functions such as turn-by-turn navigation make the Smartwach ideal for adventurers and explorers. It ensures that users can find their way back. The watch's sunrise and sunset alarms tell the user exactly from when until they have daylight available for their activities - a function that I have needed many a time.
What really stands out to me personally is the fact that the smartwatch does not come from the Far East, but was designed by Suunto in Helsinki and “proudly manufactured in Finland”. In addition, according to the manufacturer, the watch was subjected to “extreme testing” and developed with longevity in mind.

A very detailed Suunto 5 Peak test report on Youtube, in which the sports watch is presented in the video.
Jogging and Stand Up Paddling in my Suunto 5 Peak test
For my Suunto 5 Peak test, I tried out the smartwatch with my favorite sports - jogging and stand-up paddling - and saw how the smartwatch performed in action. And I have to say upfront: It's doing even better than expected - and there's a good reason for that.
Suunto 5 Peak jogging
I have my fixed jogging routes in Hamburg, all of which I have run so often that I know them by heart and could practically run blind. I've known Suunto's heatmaps for a long time, but haven't used them in the past. A big mistake! If you do sports with the Suunto 5 Peak, you should have your smartphone with you so that you can use the smartphone GPS for precise tracking with the smartwatch. I always have my smartphone with me anyway because I have to be reachable while jogging and I often take photos on my jogging route.
And if you have your smartphone with you anyway, you can occasionally take a look at the heatmaps while running with the Suunto 5 Peak. Because there are so many branching paths in Hamburg, some of which I overlooked and which I was only able to identify as a usable running route through the heatmaps. In just a few weeks of use, my route network has expanded by a whopping 30 percent.
And not only that: the measurement data in the Suunto 5 Peak test is very precise. The heart rate clearly agreed with my reference measuring device. In addition, the evaluations are very useful - especially the calculation of fat and carbohydrates burned.
Stand up paddling with the Suunto 5 Peak
I had similarly positive experiences with the SUP with the Suunto 5 Peak. On the one hand, the smartwatch has its own program for paddling and on the other hand, with SUP you need a robust sports watch that can withstand a drop or two of water and even a shock. The workout is recorded precisely, similar to jogging, and includes values such as time, distance, calorie consumption and more.
Unfortunately, the heatmaps don't work that well when paddling. Probably because not that many people have used the Suunto app while paddling. They only work on particularly busy waterways where many athletes travel.
Strengths and weaknesses of the Suunto 5 Peak
The Suunto 5 Peak has many strengths and also some weaknesses. The strengths clearly outweigh the disadvantages - especially since the weaknesses are also intentional. The manufacturer wisely left out the touchscreen and did without a GPS receiver in the smartwatch in order to make the watch particularly light. Below I have listed all the strengths and weaknesses that I noticed in my Suunto 5 Peak test.
Power
- Super light and compact, you hardly feel the watch when wearing it
- elegant, minimalist design
- very precise measurement of heart rate
- Simple and intuitive operation with buttons

- comparatively low price
- Suunto app with many functions
- very simple setup
- Tracking fat burning and carbohydrate burning

weaknesses
- no touchscreen and no AMOLED
- no integrated GPS
- A few useful functions such as fall detection are missing

Suunto 5 Peak test and experiences - light companion for all adventures?
My conclusion
After my Suunto 5 Peak test, my conclusion is clear: no one needs more of a smartwatch - and if you're a technology fan like me and still want some functionality, you can go for the larger sister models Suunto 7 or Suunto 9 Peak. The Suunto 5 Peak does what it promises: It is a small, particularly light sports watch with all the usual functions for athletes and outdoor fans.
In addition, the model is made in Finland, which can definitely be seen as a quality feature. The heart rate measurement works precisely and the Suunto ecosystem around the Suunto app for iOS and Android with heatmaps and many evaluations ensures a flawless user experience. And all of this is available at a very affordable entry-level price.
