Apple Watch Series 6 test – joy for the athlete's heart?

by

The Apple Watch 6 finally measures blood oxygen as well - thanks to this feature, the smartwatch should become even more attractive, especially for sporty outdoor fans and active vacationers, and be an ideal companion on the next trip. In my Apple Watch Series 6 test I would like to introduce you to the Smartwatch. With faster processors, a brighter always-on display and blood oxygen measurement, the smartwatch definitely has two tangible innovations on board. The killer feature that completely convinced me of the new iWatch, however, is different. In my Apple Watch Series 6 test I have put together the most important information about the new clock for you.

One of the broadest Journeys In the Corona year 2020 I got into the Apple Store in Hamburg-Poppenbüttel to order me for my Apple Watch Series 6 test to pick up a model in stainless steel in silver (the watch was of course paid for by myself and is assessed strictly and differentiatedly in the test). Also included, of course, is the new braided Solo Loop, which will particularly delight outdoor lovers and ambitious athletes. Visually, practically nothing has changed on the new smartwatch from Cupertino. The multifunctional one Sensor the case back of the watch looks a little different. It now lights up in green and red because it now consists of four LED clusters and four photodiodes, which can be used to measure both the pulse and the blood oxygen level.

And the new killer feature of the smartwatch, which in my personal opinion is true, catches my eye immediately - but I won't reveal what that means until later. However, the first insight is clear: For the optics, at least owners of one must be Apple Watch Series 4 or Apple Watch Series 5 Don't buy the new 6 Series iWatch. The real changes are under the hood. Has the manufacturer achieved a great success with the new electronic watch? I was really curious myself and started to find out as soon as I bought it by doing sports with the watch, swimming and going to the sauna (Apple Watch Sauna at your own risk). In my Apple Watch Series 6 test I checked the new model in detail and would like to share my findings with you.

Apple Watch Series 6 review - my first impression

The first impression of the Apple Watch Series 6 is of course an optical one - and it is clear. The appearance of the new model is completely similar to its predecessor. Only the bottom of the case with the new blood oxygen sensor looks different. Here one counts more diodes than with the predecessor. Otherwise, the case in the stainless steel version is actually identical to Apple Watch Series 4 and Apple Watch Series 5. Anyone who was hoping for a fresh exterior will unfortunately be disappointed this year. The appearance of the Apple Watch is still solid, the materials such as stainless steel and ceramic are high quality and whether you like the design or not is a matter of taste.

But that would mean the similarities would be over. Because the first impression of Apple Watch Series 6 in the test is still strong: as soon as it is switched on, the always-on display lights up brighter than ever. Anyone who has already used other smartwatch models or the direct predecessor will now be able to see a particularly bright always-on display - this actually saves an arm movement because you can also read the display data from the corner of your eye. This is the first truly enjoyable moment after unpacking, switching on and configuring. This is definitely an advantage over its predecessors.

And the second highlight doesn't take long to arrive: the new one Apple Watch Solo loop (optionally available) is slipped over the wrist and ensures that the smartwatch fits perfectly. The problem with the Solo Loop, however, is that the measured size is difficult to match - I measured several times and measured size 8 for the 44 millimeter model. After various tests in Apple Store I used a bracelet in size 5. This coincides with reports that the bracelet is too big for many buyers. The size 5 was well chosen for me - it now fits wonderfully and ensures that mine Apple Watch Series 6 sits optimally on the wrist. My first impression here: I've never had a watch that fits as well as this Apple Watch 6 with this new bracelet. This impression was to be confirmed later.

Apple Watch Series 6 test – Smartwatch in detailed check

In my Apple Watch In the Series 6 test, I take the smartwatch hard again - especially for outdoor fans, travelers and athletes, this should show whether the watch is also suitable for outdoor use. After unpacking and trying it out for the first time, I put the smartwatch in a transparent protective cover. I always tormented the previous models and after a short time they showed strong signs of use in the form of scratches on the display and the stainless steel housing. A Apple Watch even broke due to intensive use.

The Apple Watch Series 6 shows the most important information on the sharp OLED display, which is always on. The clock faces can be designed individually. Photo: Sascha Tegtmeyer

So this year I'm going to try a protective cover. Already in the first few days, the case protected the smartwatch from bumps and various nuisances. The disadvantage right away: The view of the display becomes a bit milky. But you get used to it very quickly. And even after a few weeks, the smartwatch still looks like new. In previous years it was unfortunately very different - mine did Apple Watch has suffered quite a bit and looked neatly scratched after a few weeks. I can therefore only recommend active people to protect the expensive piece accordingly. I have in Apple Watch Series 6 test tested the electronic watch in different situations and considering different functions. In the following I would like to share my experiences with you.

Optical appearance of the 6 series Apple Watch

The housing looks optically Apple Watch Series 6 looks like its direct predecessor - only the colors blue and red (in the aluminum version) and graphite (in the stainless steel version) are now available. Photo: Sascha Tegtmeyer
The housing looks optically Apple Watch Series 6 looks like its direct predecessor - only the colors blue and red (in the aluminum version) and graphite (in the stainless steel version) are now available. Photo: Sascha Tegtmeyer

The visual appearance of the Apple Watch Series 6 is the same as its predecessors. Only new colors are available - blue and red. With the stainless steel case, black has now become graphite. The shape, however, remains identical. The design of the new model is now in its third year. The watch is quite chic and looks by no means old-fashioned. In the coming year there might be a Apple Watch Series 7 with a completely new look - but that's just a guess.

This is how well the new blood oxygen sensor works Apple Watch Series 6

Measure blood oxygen saturation with the Apple Watch Series 6: It worked very reliably in the test. Photo: Sascha Tegtmeyer

I've read and heard several times that people use the blood oxygen sensor of the Apple Watch Series 6 struggled and had to make multiple attempts to obtain values. I can not confirm that. Every measurement worked right away for me. In a few exceptional cases I had to make a second attempt. On the display there are precise instructions that you should hold your arm still and put it down if possible. My blood oxygen saturation was always between 96 and 100 percent. However, I am currently unable to say how precise these values are - I cannot use any reference values.

Heart rate measurement and EKG function of the Apple Watch 6

The biggest difference is made by the new sensor of the Apple Watch Series 6 - the manufacturer describes it as "revolutionary". Photo: Sascha Tegtmeyer

With the heart rate measurement and EKG function of the Apple Watch Series 6 has not changed anything compared to its predecessors. The function works fine for me. The heart rate is measured regularly and is precise, as a comparison with other heart rate monitors shows. The EKG works straight away and shouldn't deliver any worse values than the previous models. The 1-channel ECG of the Apple Watch has already been praised by medical professionals in the previous models and described as very precise. That should also be the case in the current models. The sensor of the Apple Watch Series 6 contains the optical heart rate sensor and the sensor for measuring blood oxygen saturation - the manufacturer describes this measuring instrument as "revolutionary".

Apple S6 SiP with a 64-bit dual-core processor is super fast

What I really like is the interaction of the new processors Apple S6 SiP with 64-bit dual-core processor with the watchOS 7 operating system. The new processor seems to be incredibly fast, because in combination with watchOS 7, apps and menus open with almost no time delay. Compared to the previous clock and the previous operating system, the menus have become significantly faster - so really much, much faster. It's a very pleasant experience to use. At the Apple Wireless chip W3 and ultra-broadband chip U1 do not noticeably differ as a user - they are used to interact with the iPhone.

Optimal interaction of Apple Watch Series 6 and iPhone

The interaction of Apple Watch Series 6 and the iPhone still works fine. With the new watchOS 7 operating system in combination with iOS 14, it is sufficient for a family member to have an iPhone. A Apple Watch can then be configured with this iPhone, even if you do not have an iPhone yourself. This novelty makes the watch a little more independent of the smartphone.

Apple Watch Series 6 in running, sports and fitness

I have read the Apple Watch Series 6 has now been extensively tested for running, sports and fitness. This is where the always-on display is particularly noticeable. Especially when you're outdoors, you have a much better view of the data. However, there is still a catch at the moment: the always-on display only works really well if you use the integrated training app. If you use a third-party app such as Runtastic, the smartwatch only shows the time in always-on mode.

You also have to turn your wrist to see the data. However, this is likely to be a software-related problem that will be resolved with future updates to third-party fitness apps. I haven't yet been able to check whether there are third-party apps that offer readable data in always-on mode.

Apple Watch 6 test – the strengths and weaknesses of the smartwatch

Im Apple Watch 6 test, the watch showed quite a few strengths and also some weaknesses. In my opinion, the strengths clearly outweigh the weaknesses. The Apple Watch The sixth generation is not a real innovation. It is an excellent watch, which in this version has become even better than its two predecessors. On the strengths side, the new blood oxygen sensor, the faster processors and the brighter always-on display should be particularly highlighted.

The Apple Watch Series 6 is definitely a buy for outdoor enthusiasts and ambitious athletes - owners of the direct predecessor could also consider simply getting the (braided) Solo Loop instead of the new Smartwatch. Photo: Sascha Tegtmeyer

On the negative side, the design and the battery life of the watch are a bit outdated. Since you can now wear the smartwatch at night, the charging times have shifted slightly. For example, I charge the smartwatch in the morning and in the evening - i.e. twice a day. The loading times are relatively short. But that's a bit annoying and a longer battery life is urgently desired. Otherwise, I now wear the watch day and night – for testing purposes, of course. I have shown you the strengths and weaknesses here Apple Watch Series 6 listed.

Power

  • the new sensor precisely measures heart rate and blood oxygen saturation
  • the new processor makes the smartwatch super fast in combination with the current operating system
  • the always-on display is now sufficiently bright outdoors
  • close connection to the Apple-Kosmos - smooth interaction with all other devices from the manufacturer
  • With the braided Solo Loop, the smartwatch fits like a glove - provided you have chosen the right size
  • can Apple Watch 6 charges noticeably faster

weaknesses

  • Design since Apple Watch Series 4 almost identical
  • the prices for some variants of the smartwatch are very juicy in my opinion - especially the braided solo loop is not exactly cheap "for such a small piece of cloth"
  • close connection to the Apple-Cosmos - at least one person in the vicinity must have an iPhone to configure the smartwatch - not compatible with Android devices
  • the battery life is still 18 hours - with "normal" use, the smartwatch must be charged at least once a day

Apple Watch Series 6 test – the perfect smartwatch for sports and outdoor use?

My conclusion

Since the first generation of the Apple Watch I am an avid fan of this smartwatch. I started writing about the smartwatch back then because it was new in 2015 and a niche market. I wanted to share my enthusiasm. With the Apple Watch Series 4 appeared two years ago, the first major redesign and a great new model on the market. The bottom line is that it is the Apple Watch Series 6 is a good watch that has simply become even better compared to its predecessors - an evolution, not a revolution. It does not differ in appearance from the two previous versions. The interior has been completely renovated and new functions have been introduced.

After my Apple Watch Series 6 test I can fully recommend the smartwatch. Who already has a Apple Watch Series 4 or Apple Watch Series 5 may well consider giving up buying this year and waiting for the big, potential redesign next year. I can only recommend buying the very expensive, but incredibly well-fitting braided solo loop, as it is also compatible with the earlier ones Apple Watch Models match. However, if you have the budget and want to be up to date with the latest technology, you can also strike this year and join the new Apple Watch delight.
