Garmin fenix 6 Pro – first impression and experiences

The new Garmin fenix 6 Pro accompanied us to the dream island of Mauritius for our sports watch test - we went hiking there with the smartwatch in the dense jungle of the highlands and of course also wore the timepiece on the beach while swimming and snorkeling. At first glance, the outdoor clock makes a very elegant, high-quality and well thought-out impression. The processing is flawless.

The bezel is made of metal with a DLC coating, the housing is made of a very solid plastic and the cover glass is made of scratch-resistant sapphire glass and convey the feeling of a very high-quality watch watch to have in hand. The large 51 mm display of the medium-sized Garmin fenix 6 Pro makes other smartwatches look like children's toys in direct comparison.

The rugged exterior is underscored by five screws located on the bezel. The display shows the most important information such as heart rate, air pressure, charge status, time and date, stress level and calorie consumption. The smartwatch offers an overview of the most important information at a glance. It's very bright in Mauritius and we noticed straight away that the display is easy to read in all lighting conditions, even in bright sunshine. A real plus point compared to many other models.

The bracelet of the smartwatch was initially too soft for me - after the time I liked the soft band better than hard variants. Photo: Sascha Tegtmeyer
Reliable buckle that holds the watch reliably even under load. The bracelet of the watch was initially too soft for me - after a while I liked the soft band better than hard variants. Photo: Sascha Tegtmeyer

There is a small downer with the Heart rate monitor but to start: The clock is not operated by touch screen, but over five buttons. The functions of the individual buttons must first be accessed through the manual or by trial. The plastic bracelet is a bit too soft for me, but it is correspondingly comfortable and comfortable to wear. When worn for longer, the soft bracelet can even score significantly over hardening. The smartwatch can be released within a few seconds of unpacking with my iPhone 11 Pro Max (test) . connect

To do this, you have to download the Garmin Connect app from the relevant app store. The program is available for iOS and Android. To set up the watch, you need a Garmin account that you can use to log into the smartphone program. The watch is then set up within a few minutes while the user is guided through the menu. The system appears to be sophisticated and has worked perfectly for us right from the start.

Directly positive I noticed in the Garmin fenix 6 Pro the many setting options, the ability to install new watch faces and the connection of the smartwatch with the WLAN.
My first impression of the Garmin fenix 6 is that everything fits in the new series: the app infrastructure on the Smartphone is clear and reliable, offers quick setting options and connects reliably to the smart watch.

The charge status display of the watch is also exciting: the display shows 36 days – with other manufacturers it is sometimes only 18 hours. It has to be said that the battery life of the fenix 6 depends very much on usage and can quickly decrease significantly. The smartwatch usually manages the day without any problems.

Garmin Fenix 6 Pro test – extensive experience gained on the island of Mauritius

We took the Garmin fenix 6 Pro to the island of Mauritius and thoroughly checked and tested the large, robust smartwatch. We tried the timepiece in all the situations that active people, athletes, hikers and adventurers experience on vacation:

The Garmin fenix 6 Pro offers many features that support the wearer in all outdoor activities. We tested the Garmin fenix 6 on the island of Mauritius while hiking in the jungle. Photo: Sascha Tegtmeyer

Hiking in the nature park, jogging on the beach and also swimming and snorkeling allowed the smart watch to show what it can do. And so much can be revealed: In our Garmin fenix 6 Pro test, the heart rate monitor didn't do badly at all.

1. Garmin fenix 6 Pro test while hiking

Basically you do not have to take off the Garmin fenix 6 Pro very often. The battery lasts several days with average usage and also for sleep tracking, the smart watch offers versatile functions. However, if you do not want to wear the watch all the time on the trip, you should put it in a vault: The high-quality watch is a real investment and should therefore be stowed away safely. If activities are on the agenda, the timepiece should, of course, be a clever companion on your wrist: We hiked with the Garmin fenix 6 Pro in the nature park and were able to make excellent use of the multifaceted functions for outdoor enthusiasts in this situation.

GPS and heart rate measurement naturally also work when recording hikes. When you go through the middle of the dense jungle and you climb through the bushes, your heart rate can shoot up. With the dynamic pace specification, which includes the gradients of the stretching profile, the forces can be optimally divided. Tracking by family members can also be very useful. For example, I climbed very close to a waterfall with my watch and was really happy to be able to fall back on the emergency functions in this situation - thanks to fall detection and the like. My conclusion: you feel a bit safer when hiking and can very reliably monitor your vital functions and record hikes.

2. Testing the fenix 6 Pro swimming and snorkeling

Just by looking at the robust housing of the Garmin fenix 6 Pro, you can already guess that this watch is well protected against wind and weather and especially against water. And of course that is actually the case: the watch is officially waterproof up to ten ATM. With this you can easily shower, walk around in the rain, swim and snorkel. You can certainly do one or two not-too-deep freediving exercises on the reef with the watch at your own risk. The watch also offers a special program to record swimming workouts.

To be honest, that wasn't the primary goal of snorkeling and swimming. Especially if you are on a snorkeling trip and the guide on the ship says that you should be back on board after 30 minutes, a robust watch is essential when snorkeling. In this respect, the Garmin fenix 6 Pro has also proven to be incredibly useful for swimming and snorkeling.

3. Experiences with the Garmin Fenix 6 Pro jogging on the beach

The Garmin Fenix 6 Pro is made for all endurance sports that involve upright walking - walking, running and hiking. Accordingly, the jogging on the beach with the smartwatch was a real pleasure. Thus, spent beach walks, but also the evening jogging round wonderful record. Internet connection provided the family in the hotel has the opportunity to pursue the athlete on his round. In Mauritius, it is not absolutely necessary, but if you are traveling in rather insecure travel countries, this feature can be very important - if you do not want to give up your sports program.

Anyone who likes to crawl through rough terrain while traveling in the dense jungle has a reliable companion with the fenix 6. Photo: Sascha Tegtmeyer

Garmin fenix 6 Pro test – How much outdoor watch do people need?

The top model of the new Garmin fenix 6 series - the Garmin fenix 6X Pro Solar Titan - is already a stately gadget and will probably soon be part of the essential travel equipment for many active people. The case and bracelet are made of titanium with a case size of a whopping 51 millimeters. With a choice of gorilla glass or sapphire glass, Garmin Music, pre-installed maps and WLAN, Garmin has served up quite a hearty meal with the new wearables.

However, one function in particular stands out that is literally below the surface: the new integrated solar charging lens, which can significantly extend the battery life of the smartwatch without the Garmin fenix 6X Pro having to be plugged in. In addition, the clock shows very clearly how long the runtime has been extended by the solar power.

Who is an adventurer and active vacationer in the middle of the wilderness or on longer walking tours, this feature will surely appreciate. All in all, great emphasis was placed on optimizing battery life in the overall concept, so that the outdoor smartwatch has an uncanny connection to the charger.

Lots of unique features

But that's not all: the manufacturer has integrated many other new functions into the new Garmin fenix 6X Pro, which you have yet to find in vain from other major manufacturers. These include, for example, the dynamic PacePro function, which is intended to help the user manage his strength and take different terrains into account. In addition, the performance monitoring of the wearer has been optimized. The watch now also determines advanced training values and running efficiency values as well as oxygen saturation that is adapted to heat and altitude.

The blood oxygen saturation is determined with the innovative Pulse Ox Sensor and shows how well the body can absorb oxygen. At first glance, many of these functions sound as if they were optimized for running and jogging. The smartwatch is of course not just for runners.

It comes preloaded with sports apps for almost every major sport like trail running, swimming, running, biking, hiking, rowing, skiing (backcountry and on-piste) and golfing. The emergency help feature should also be emphasized, which can automatically detect an accident or illness in the event of an accident and sends the location to stored emergency contacts.

And as an active holidaymaker do I need the Garmin fenix 6X Pro for my upcoming trips? Everyone must decide that for themselves. But for those who really want to experience something on holiday, are long and far away, the Garmin fenix 6 models could turn out to be the best choice among sports watches.

Strengths and weaknesses in the Garmin fenix 6 Pro test

In my Garmin fenix 6 Pro test, the sports smartwatch showed many strengths, but also some weaknesses. In particular, the lack of touch controls and the comparatively low-resolution display bothered me. My positive Garmin fenix 6 Pro experiences were mainly characterized by the many sports programs, possible uses and the high-quality housing materials.

Robust outdoor smartwatch with many practical functions: In the new Garmin fenix 6 Pro, the manufacturer has thought of the needs of athletes and adventurers. Photo: Sascha Tegtmeyer

Below I have listed all the strengths and weaknesses that I noticed in my Garmin fenix 6 test. The assessment is of course very subjective - there are athletes, for example, who prefer to operate the smartwatch with a button instead of operating the watch at the push of a button.

Power

  • high quality steel / stainless steel or titanium and sapphire crystal case
  • Optic of an elegant wristwatch
  • fast and intuitive setup
  • several settings and various health functions
  • many options for tracking the training
  • appealing navigation
  • attractive watch faces with numerous display complications
  • Reliable connectivity with the smartphone
  • a working and user-friendly app infrastructure
  • automatic software update

weaknesses

  • no touch display and a relatively low resolution of the display
  • At first a little getting used to with five buttons
  • partly a little confusing menu - with the numerous setting options you have to first deal with it in more detail - or they can be explained in a tutorial

FAQs Garmin fenix 6 test – the most important questions and answers about the sports smartwatch

I have put together the most important questions and answers about my Garmin fenix 6 Pro test for you and hopefully I can offer you even better decision-making support when buying your next sports smartwatch.

Which Garmin watch is the best?

The best Garmin watch is based on personal preferences and preferences. The sports practiced should also be taken into account. The Garmin Epix 2, the Garmin Fenix 7, the Garmin Fenix 6 or the Garmin Venu 2 are suitable for most users. The sports smartwatches are particularly versatile and use current state-of-the-art functions that every current smartwatch should have. If you are looking for a high-quality Garmin watch and have a slightly smaller budget, you can use the Garmin Venu or basically choose a previous model such as the Garmin fenix 6.

Which Garmin watch?

The manufacturer Garmin has a wide range of smartwatches to choose from. Probably the most important model is the Garmin Fenix, the all-rounder among the manufacturer's sports watches. Since 2022, however, the Fenix has had a big sister: the Garmin Epix 2, which has similar specifications to the Fenix series, but has been supplemented with a razor-sharp AMOLED display. The watch is very versatile in everyday life, in sports, outdoor activities and when travelling. Other high-quality models are the Garmin Venu, the Garmin Vivoactive and the Garmin Forerunner.

Which Garmin watch for hiking?

The Garmin Fenix 7X Sapphire Solar is particularly suitable for hiking, as it has the pre-installed TopoActive map of Europe integrated as standard and, thanks to special functions for hikers and mountaineers, is ideal for hiking and all outdoor activities. In addition, it is particularly large and, thanks to solar operation, has a particularly long battery life.

Which Garmin running watch?

The Garmin Forerunner of the current generation is particularly suitable for runners and joggers. The smartwatch is specially designed for runners. For those who complete a more varied sports program, there is the Garmin Venu, which is more of a multisport smartwatch and can be worn better in everyday life thanks to its attractive design. The Garmin Fenix 7 and Garmin Epix 2 can also be used as a sports smartwatch for running and jogging.

What can the Garmin Venu do?

The Garmin Venu is a fitness smartwatch that masters many current functions and actively supports the wearer in his athletic training. The main features of the Garmin Venu include the following:
- AMOLED color display
- Tracking of heart rate on the wrist, oxygen saturation, energy level, breathing rate, menstrual cycle tracking, drinking reminder and relaxation notices
- animated fitness exercises to imitate
- Accident detection and emergency assistance
- music functions
- contactless payments
- Apps for sports activities like running, swimming and more
- other typical smartwatch functions

Which Garmin for swimming?

The Garmin Venu is also recommended for swimming training - it has an integrated app with which swimming workouts can be recorded. The fenix 6 and quatix 6 are also excellent for use in water. However, the Garmin Swim 2 model is specially designed for swimmers - it is intended for everyone whose sporting activity is primarily swimming - both in the swimming pool and in open water.

Can I bike with the Garmin Venu?

Yes, the Garmin Venu is ideal for cycling. Numerous apps for different sports are preinstalled on the sports smartwatch. This also includes the cycling program.

What can the Garmin vivoactive 4 do?

- The Garmin Vivoactive 4 is an up-to-date fitness smartwatch with numerous useful functions for sport, everyday life and vacation
- According to the manufacturer, the smartwatch should promote “healthy lifestyle through maximum efficiency”
- Energy level measurement, oxygen saturation measurement, stress level tracking, heart rate measurement, breathing rate, sleep analysis and menstrual cycle tracking are standard on board
- Apps for over 20 different sports such as running, cycling and swimming are preinstalled
- The animated workouts shown on the display are also exciting and motivate and support the wearer to perform the workout frequently and correctly

When does the Garmin vivoactive 4 come?

The Garmin vivoactive 4 and Garmin vivoactive 4S have been on the market since autumn 2019 and can be purchased in online shops and in specialist shops.

When is Garmin Fenix 7 coming?

The following models from the Garmin fenix series have recently appeared: The fenix 2019 came in summer 6. This was followed in summer 2020 by the fenix 6 Solar. At the beginning of 2022, the fenix 7 was released in several model variants.

What can the Fenix 7 do?

The Garmin Fenix 7 is a small high-performance wrist computer that brings many new functions. The smartwatch is specially designed for fitness and outdoor activities. It can record activities such as steps, calories burned, floors climbed, distance traveled, intensity minutes, standing hours, TrueUp, Move IQ and Garmin Connect Challenges.

When will Garmin release new watches?

Garmin typically releases yearly upgrades to its most important models. The new products are often released in midsummer. In 2022, however, the new top models Garmin Fenix 7 and Garmin Epix 2 were released in January. So far, you could reliably count on it in the middle of the year: The fenix 2019 came in summer 6. This was followed in summer 2020 by the fenix 6 Solar.

Which Garmin watch is best for women?

In my opinion, the best Garmin watch for women is either the Garmin Fenix 7S (S stands for small). This model is also available in rose gold with a white bracelet and should be ideal for many women due to its size. Women who prefer to wear larger watches should consider the Garmin Epix 2, as it is very similar to the Fenix but has the razor-sharp AMOLED display. Fenix and Epix seem to me to be the best Garmin smartwatches at the moment and are also ideal for women.

The color black is also very popular. The Garmin Fenix 6X Pro Solar is particularly recommended, as it can be recharged with solar energy and therefore has a corresponding battery.

When will the Fenix 6 be released?

The Garmin Fenix 6 was released in August 2019.

  1. Hello and thanks for the detailed test. I am thinking about buying a Fenix 6 Shapphire Titanium, especially this model seems to be more resistant to scratches and signs of wear. In the test, however, you used a black watch. Is it the 6X Shapphire with DLC bezel? If it is the DLC variant, what does the bezel look like after a few weeks / months?
    Thanks for feedback

  2. Hallo,

Since I have been using a previous model from the fenix series for years every day and for triathlon training, I can only say:
Not having a touch display is an advantage for me. I can use the watch underwater or when the display is wet without any problems. In winter you can do it with thick gloves and on a stuck bike with trembling fingers. Above all, I can operate them blindly because the buttons give haptic feedback before I really press them. Even if the watch is halfway down my jacket sleeve or my vision isn't entirely clear while jogging, I know in advance which button I'm going to press.

In all other points, the entertaining report coincides with my personal experiences.

    Regards
    Chris
