The Samsung Galaxy Watch Active 2 makes a high-quality and sporty impression at first glance. The silver smartwatch made of aluminum is very well made and designed in a timeless design. On the back there is the optical heart rate sensor, which looks almost like the current one Apple Watch. The round, high-resolution display shines brightly and colorfully when switched on and allows for intuitive operation right from the start.

All settings can be made there, the watch face can be changed and apps for the Samsung Galaxy Watch Active 2 can be downloaded.

As with all other providers, you have to set up a Samsung account in order to be able to exploit the full potential of the watch. And one thing I have to say after my test: The Samsung Galaxy Watch Active 2 definitely has the potential to shine as a watch used in everyday life, at work and for sports. I paid 312 euros for the copy - the bottom line seems to be a very good price-performance ratio.

We tested the Samsung Galaxy Watch Active 2 in many different situations. When used in everyday life, during sports and when going for a walk, the new smartwatch for athletes makes an extremely solid and reliable impression. It is packed with current sports watch functions that the current generation models should have. What is very pleasant to point out is that the outdoor watch often reacts very correctly and automatically to movement and suggests starting a workout.

This is what the current one does, for example Apple Watch also, but is much slower and makes the suggestion to start a workout much later, when you have been on the road for minutes. With the Active 2, Samsung relies heavily on health functions and in particular on avoiding stress.

The sports watch determines the stress level and sends valuable memories such as the request to breathe, which can be very practical and useful, especially in stressful everyday life. My experience is that only the frequent reminders of breathing promote stress reduction, because it sensitizes them to the topic and deals with stress more carefully. In this respect, the term "Omm clock" is quite justified - who downloads another app for meditation and yoga, can find the fitness clock to true deep relaxation.

Strengths and weaknesses of the Samsung Galaxy Watch Active 2

Overall, the Samsung Galaxy Watch Active 2 made a solid impression in the test. The strengths clearly outweigh the weaknesses of the model. The greatest strength is definitely the always-on display, which has become the standard for current smartwatches this year and provides a much more pleasant user experience - a little like a conventional watch. Unfortunately, the always-on AMOLED display also affects the battery life of the Galaxy Active. That's not so tragic, though, as the battery can last up to 4,5 days with standard use. Corresponding deductions for the always-on function can therefore be gotten over.

I find the digital bezel very exciting, as it allows for a new type of gesture control and includes the edge of the display. When it comes to operation, the colorful and intuitive operating system and the associated iOS app are highly recommended. Within minutes you can easily get to grips with the watch's functionality and navigate the menu and personalize the sports smartwatch.

Like most current smartwatches, the Samsung Galaxy Watch Active 2 is designed with numerous fitness and sports programs for exercise, activities and workouts. This makes it the perfect companion for all athletes and also for travelers who are active on vacation when surfing, swimming, jogging on the beach, hiking, intensive sightseeing on a city trip with 20.000 steps in one day and numerous other sports, that sweeten your vacation.

ECG function available

In the meantime, the ECG function has also arrived on the Samsung Galaxy Watch Active 2 – it just hasn't been activated yet. The watch not only reliably records the heart rate via the optical heart sensor, but can also take an ECG in the future if required. However, this function, like fall detection, will not be available until the beginning of 2020 via software update. It is also worth noting that the Samsung smartwatch has numerous anti-stress functions that are supposed to help you relax more often with the help of breathing exercises and an anti-stress monitor ring.

Strong focus on stress management for the user

The strong focus on stress seems to be one of the valuable unique selling points of the Samsung Galaxy Watch Active 2. Another strength is the good compatibility with Android and Samsung products on the one hand, but also with iOS and my iPhone. the Apple Watch cannot be connected to gadgets and Android devices yet.

Weaknesses are limited

Overall, the weaknesses in our Samsung Galaxy Watch Active 2 test are rather limited. If you look very closely, the AMOLED display could be a little bit sharper. If you look closely, it still looks a little pixelated. It's not noticeable from far away.

In addition, the menus, watch faces and selection options are sometimes a little too colorful for me, so I prefer a more classic and elegant design. However, the biggest weakness of our test model was the bracelet. It was made of a lightweight plastic that didn't seem particularly solid. The closure also seemed rather cheap. However, there is a very large selection of bracelets - including from third-party providers - so there are certainly many higher quality versions available.

Older smartwatch models as an alternative?

Unfortunately, I haven't been able to test the previous models of the Samsung Galaxy Watch Active 2 yet, but I'm relatively convinced that the manufacturer has made a big splash with the Active 2 Sports Watches and the smartwatch stands out from the previous models. Especially the ECG recording and the digital one Bezel should make the model the first choice for anyone who is currently looking for a high-quality and relatively inexpensive smartwatch.

Due to the good price-performance ratio, you don't necessarily have to resort to a previous model. The Samsung Galaxy Watch Active 2 currently seems to be a good smartwatch alternative and is one of the best sports watches on the market.

Considering a price that was sometimes under 300 euros for the aluminum model (prices vary depending on the offer and provider), you can't go wrong with the new Samsung Galaxy Watch Active 2. For anyone who is not looking for a special watch such as a diving watch, the smartwatch should prove to be a good choice. The watch is for both Android users and iPhone owners who don't have the budget for one Apple Watch have, a clear purchase.
