Garmin epix 2 test & experiences – ultra-sharp sports smartwatch for outdoor fans?

by

The Garmin epix 2 - also often referred to as Garmin epix Gen 2 - is the sister model to the Garmin fenix 7, which together form a high-end duo that defines the highest standards for outdoor smartwatches and relies on advanced technologies. Similar to the fenix, the epix 2 Sport Smartwatch also impresses with very high-quality materials, excellent workmanship, an attractive, round and robust watch design and an almost endless battery life in everyday life thanks to the solar cell. However, it has a big advantage over its sister: It has a high-resolution, razor-sharp AMOLED display. The main question should therefore be: Garmin epix 2 or fenix 7 – which model is right for me? Is the Garmin epix Gen 2 the perfect all-rounder sports watch and a sporty smartwatch for all areas of use when travelling, in fitness and in everyday life? What are the strengths and weaknesses of the fitness watch? In my Garmin epix 2 test with my experiences, I have put together all the important information about the sports smartwatch for you.

The Garmin epix 2 is probably the manufacturer's smartwatch that I personally have been waiting for for a long time. It is the high-end sister model of the fenix 7 and has a small but very fine advantage over this model: it has a razor-sharp, high-resolution AMOLED display Touchscreen. I would definitely not want to do without this property in a high-quality, high-end smartwatch for outdoor use today. I had already wished for this function with the fenix 6, which, however, could only be operated with buttons. Both the manufacturer and many users were convinced for a long time that button operation is the better choice for use in sports - especially in the endurance area.

The Garmin epix 2 is an outdoor smartwatch that combines the robust design with the concise Bezel Maintains, relies on touch function and color display and is probably intended to appeal to technology-savvy wearers like me Outdoor sports watch Not only worn during competitive sports and on long trips, but also in the office and on social occasions. For me, the Garmin epix 2 is one of the most exciting new releases of the year. I have a feeling that Garmin I could have made a big splash with the epix and can hardly wait to try it out in a detailed Garmin epix 2 test and share my experiences with you.

I'm currently testing the new Garmin epix. At this point, my Garmin epix 2 test appears with my experiences as soon as I have extensively tested a model of this modern sports smartwatch and can tell you about my findings.

Garmin epix 2 test – functions of the high-end multisport smartwatch

The manufacturer describes the Garmin epix 2 as the beginning of a new era - and the provider should probably hit the nail on the head with that. Because the sister model of the Garmin fenix 7 is identical to the fenix in many functions - but has one big advantage: the razor-sharp AMOLED display with touchscreen functionality. And to say it straight away, also a very big disadvantage: There is no solar charging lens under the display - so the battery life cannot be extended like in the sister model. However, the AMOLED display should make up for the supposedly somewhat shorter battery life.

Especially since the battery life of the epix 2 is specified as up to 16 days in smartwatch mode with gesture control and up to 42 hours in GPS mode - which is a lot for a smartwatch. In contrast to the fenix 7, which is available in very different models and versions, the model range of the Garmin epix 2 is fortunately very clear. There is the epix in 47mm for 899,99 euros (RRP of the manufacturer) and various epix Sapphire versions in 47mm from 999,99 euros (RRP of the manufacturer).

The highlights of the new Garmin epix 2 include heart rate measurement on the wrist, the Pulse Ox sensor and the PacePro running coach. Above all, this smartwatch comes very close to a watch thanks to the round design and the robust housing with an elegant DLC or titanium bezel. The colors slate grey, titanium and silver underline the premium look of the smartwatch.

The epix model has a 1,3-inch display and a 47mm body, which is already big and eye-catching on the wrist. Visually, it is very closely based on the sister model fenix - at least from afar, hardly anyone will be able to tell the difference. Unlike the fenix, the epix only comes in one size – 47mm. The only difference here is between the Sapphire model with titanium and sapphire glass and the standard model in stainless steel. The smartwatch relies on the tried and tested button operation in combination with a responsive touchscreen. In the following, I will introduce you to the most important features and functions of the Garmin Smartwatch, which I will also take a closer look at in my Garmin epix 2 test.

1. Training functions of the Garmin epix 2

Similar to the Garmin fenix 7, the Garmin epix 2 is also equipped with a wealth of training functions. The epix looks almost identical to the fenix: 60 sports and outdoor apps are available on the sports watch. This includes trail running, track training, swimming, running, cycling, hiking, rowing, skiing, golfing, surfing, indoor climbing and many other popular sports. The workouts with animated exercises and training plans, as already introduced with the Garmin venu, are also very appealing. Even experienced fitness athletes will certainly find one or the other exercise here that they have not previously had in their repertoire. With PacePro and ClimbPro, athletes can perfectly manage their strength both when running and when cycling, taking into account the route information.

In addition, extensive sports and training functions including training load and recovery times are available. Based on the personal training history, the watch determines target time forecasts for different distances for runners. The Stamina function, in which a residual energy analysis is carried out when running and cycling, is also particularly exciting in order to avoid premature exhaustion. And the Physiocheck, which includes running dynamics data, VO2max adjusted for heat and altitude, trail running adjustment, recovery advisor and more.

2. Navigation and outdoor functions of the Garmin epix 2

The recording of the travel distance is now even more accurate. A high-precision route recording takes place with the help of the Garmin epix 2 through the reception of different global satellite systems (GPS, GLONASS, GALILEO) and ABC sensors (additional L5 multi-frequency reception with Sapphire models). The ABC sensors, which include an altimeter for altitude data, a barometer for monitoring the weather and a 3-axis electronic compass, make navigation significantly more precise. So-called TopoActive maps from all over the world can be loaded onto the Garmin epix 2 in order to navigate, for example, when traveling or on vacation. Since the Garmin epix 2 itself has WiFi connectivity, users can load and update maps and software directly onto the smartwatch without a computer.

The POIS function is particularly useful on vacation and when travelling: the smartwatch shows interesting places – points of interest – along the route.

3. Garmin epix 2 health features

Especially when it comes to health functions, the Garmin epix 2 is definitely one of the market leaders. The Garmin epix 2 performs all-day health and fitness tracking with the latest sensor generation - including wrist-based heart rate measurement, body battery calculation, stress level calculation, Pulse Ox, respiration rate, VO2max as well as cycle and pregnancy tracking. Also exciting is the advanced sleep analysis with sleep score for sleep quality and insights directly on the watch, which shows complete information on light, deep and REM sleep. In addition, the Garmin epix records liquid intake and uses automatic targets to ensure that the wearer is drinking enough.

4. Garmin epix 2 smartwatch features

Of course, the Garmin epix 2 also has the typical smart features, which have hardly changed compared to the previous model. It has Garmin Pay, Garmin Music and Smart Notifications - and of course it is compatible with Garmin Connect, the app on the smartphone.

Also worth mentioning among the smart features are automatic accident notification and emergency assistance (manually), as well as security and tracking functions, where live position information can be automatically sent to contacts for certain activities.

FAQs Garmin epix 2 test & experiences – the most important questions

In my Garmin epix 2 test with my experiences, I have put together the most important questions and answers about the current Garmin fenix 7 smartwatches to give you an overview of the most important current functions of the high-quality sports smartwatches.

Which Garmin watch is the best?

The best Garmin watch is based on personal preferences and preferences. The sports practiced should also be taken into account. The Garmin Epix 2, the Garmin Fenix 7, the Garmin Fenix 6 or the Garmin Venu 2 are suitable for most users. The sports smartwatches are particularly versatile and use current state-of-the-art functions that every current smartwatch should have. If you are looking for a high-quality Garmin watch and have a slightly smaller budget, you can use the Garmin Venu or basically choose a previous model such as the Garmin fenix 6.

Which Garmin watch?

The manufacturer Garmin has a wide range of smartwatches to choose from. Probably the most important model is the Garmin Fenix, the all-rounder among the manufacturer's sports watches. Since 2022, however, the Fenix has had a big sister: the Garmin Epix 2, which has similar specifications to the Fenix series, but has been supplemented with a razor-sharp AMOLED display. The watch is very versatile in everyday life, in sports, outdoor activities and when travelling. Other high-quality models are the Garmin Venu, the Garmin Vivoactive and the Garmin Forerunner.

Which Garmin watch for hiking?

The Garmin Fenix 7X Sapphire Solar is particularly suitable for hiking, as it has the pre-installed TopoActive map of Europe integrated as standard and, thanks to special functions for hikers and mountaineers, is ideal for hiking and all outdoor activities. In addition, it is particularly large and, thanks to solar operation, has a particularly long battery life.

Which Garmin running watch?

The Garmin Forerunner of the current generation is particularly suitable for runners and joggers. The smartwatch is specially designed for runners. For those who complete a more varied sports program, there is the Garmin Venu, which is more of a multisport smartwatch and can be worn better in everyday life thanks to its attractive design. The Garmin Fenix 7 and Garmin Epix 2 can also be used as a sports smartwatch for running and jogging.

What can the Garmin Venu do?

The Garmin Venu is a fitness smartwatch that masters many current functions and actively supports the wearer in his athletic training. The main features of the Garmin Venu include the following:
- AMOLED color display
- Tracking of heart rate on the wrist, oxygen saturation, energy level, breathing rate, menstrual cycle tracking, drinking reminder and relaxation notices
- animated fitness exercises to imitate
- Accident detection and emergency assistance
- music functions
- contactless payments
- Apps for sports activities like running, swimming and more
- other typical smartwatch functions

Which Garmin for swimming?

The Garmin Venu is also recommended for swimming training - it has an integrated app with which swimming workouts can be recorded. The fenix 6 and quatix 6 are also excellent for use in water. However, the Garmin Swim 2 model is specially designed for swimmers - it is intended for everyone whose sporting activity is primarily swimming - both in the swimming pool and in open water.

Can I bike with the Garmin Venu?

Yes, the Garmin Venu is ideal for cycling. Numerous apps for different sports are preinstalled on the sports smartwatch. This also includes the cycling program.

When is Garmin Fenix 7 coming?

The following models from the Garmin fenix series have recently appeared: The fenix 2019 came in summer 6. This was followed in summer 2020 by the fenix 6 Solar. At the beginning of 2022, the fenix 7 was released in several model variants.

When will Garmin release new watches?

Garmin typically releases yearly upgrades to its most important models. The new products are often released in midsummer. In 2022, however, the new top models Garmin Fenix 7 and Garmin Epix 2 were released in January. So far, you could reliably count on it in the middle of the year: The fenix 2019 came in summer 6. This was followed in summer 2020 by the fenix 6 Solar.

Which Garmin watch is best for women?

In my opinion, the best Garmin watch for women is either the Garmin Fenix 7S (S stands for small). This model is also available in rose gold with a white bracelet and should be ideal for many women due to its size. Women who prefer to wear larger watches should consider the Garmin Epix 2, as it is very similar to the Fenix but has the razor-sharp AMOLED display. Fenix and Epix seem to me to be the best Garmin smartwatches at the moment and are also ideal for women.

Which Garmin models are there?

The manufacturer Garmin has several models on offer that cover different needs for different sports and other areas of application. These include about

The color black is also very popular. The Garmin Fenix 6X Pro Solar is particularly recommended, as it can be recharged with solar energy and therefore has a corresponding battery.

When will the Fenix 6 be released?
