Mauritius is truly a place that made a deep impression on me. The island is so breathtakingly beautiful, diverse and vibrant that I want to visit it as often as possible in my life. The picturesque white beaches, lively cities and diverse island culture have captured my heart. As we set out on our first Travel After preparing for Mauritius and reading reviews on the internet and searching through offers, we were not only looking for the best coast in Mauritius, but also for affordable accommodation. You won't find them everywhere.

Some hotels in Mauritius are outrageously expensive – that has to be said clearly. And of course that also influences the choice of location on the island. We were therefore looking for a hotel that had an excellent price-performance ratio and, more or less by chance, we found ourselves in one of the best coasts Mauritius landed. Our choice fell on Trou aux Biches in the northwest of the island - a decision that turned out to be a great stroke of luck. And in retrospect, after seeing many parts of the island's coastline, I would choose this place again at any time.

Trou aux Biches thrilled me the most

To get straight to the point - and that brings us straight to my personal answer to the question of which coast on Mauritius is the best. It's the one for me Northwest Coast. Trou aux Biches proved to be an ideal starting point to discover the many facets of Mauritius.

From here we could easily explore all regions of the island and had access to the local center Grand Baie with the restaurants, beaches and the large shopping center practically on your doorstep. On the one hand we were able to explore the island and on the other hand we were able to enjoy the amenities of the area.

Visited all corners of the island with a rental car

During our trip we of course also visited other parts of the island, many of us points of interest & sights and spent relaxing hours on paradisiacal beaches. We took a boat ride in the turquoise lagoon, visited the historic Le Morne Brabant mountain, and hiked to explore the lush flora and fauna of the Black River Gorges National Park.

We would choose Trou aux Biches again

However, in the end we came to the conclusion that we would always come back to the area Trou aux Biches because it offers the perfect overall package: an impressive combination of beautiful beaches, a diverse selection of restaurants and bars, shopping opportunities and a lively atmosphere. You can also go diving and snorkeling - you'll see so many turtles in the water. The overall package is just right here - and that is ultimately crucial for a successful holiday.

The most beautiful beaches in Mauritius - Which coast is the best?

Basically you will find beautiful beaches around Mauritius. This is not a question. But my impression during our explorations was that the... most beautiful beaches simply in the west of Mauritius. By this I mean both the southwest at Le Morne Brabant and the northwest at Trou aux Biches and Grand Baie. The far west near Flic en Flac also seems to me to be blessed with numerous beautiful beaches.

Many beautiful beaches in the east

I was told by an expert that the east of the island is also very beautiful. Between Grand Gaube, Poste de Flacq and Trou d’Eau Douce there is definitely a huge lagoon, which is bordered by the surrounding fringing reef of the island. And the large and expensive hotels also have their branches here.

So you can be sure that the beaches here are beautiful too. And the beautiful islet L’îlot Bernache is also in the area. So I can tell you that the beaches in the east are also quite wonderful and are in no way inferior to those in the west.

The south and the north

By the north I mean the area around Cap Malheureux. You can endure it there too. But I personally haven't gained such good access to this region. You can also spend a wonderful time there and there are also beautiful beaches like Pereybere Public Beach, but I haven't really warmed up to the region up there. There are a lot of holiday apartments there that are heavily shielded from the outside and make access to the beach somewhat difficult. I just didn't like it there that much.

In the extreme south - we went there several times to look at the beaches and visit the La Vanille Nature Park - I had the impression that the coast was rather rough. But there aren't that many hotels or places where you could stay. So I think that the extreme south of Mauritius cannot be recommended for vacation. The first port of call down south is Mahébourg near the airport - it looked pretty nice there.

Which coast is best for whom?

Because I don't think that every traveler shares my taste, I would like to answer the question again like this: There is a suitable coast in Mauritius for every preference. I am sure that vacationers with different preferences would also choose different coasts. I would therefore like to try to classify this a little.

1. Northwest for athletes and price-conscious people

In the northwest you get very good and cheap offers. At the same time, you will find good, cheap hotels there that offer excellent value for money. Therefore, this coast is ideal for price-conscious people who want high quality accommodation. At the same time, it is ideal for athletes such as divers, snorkelers, runners and cyclists.

You can get around there very easily and pleasantly. There are also numerous diving spots in front of Trou aux Biches. The region is one of the most beautiful diving areas on the island. Of course, beach vacationers also get their money's worth here - they actually do that everywhere in Mauritius, except perhaps in the south.

2. The southwest and west for active holidays and hiking holidays

I am sure that this region is ideal for active vacationers. I'm mainly talking about hikers who want to get around the island. The largest national park Black River Gorges National Park, is here in the immediate vicinity. As an active vacationer, you can spend an entire vacation exploring this park while hiking.

There is also the region in the southwest near Le Morne Brabant. Here, too, you can go hiking and enjoy the view from the iconic, legendary mountain. Of course, you get dream beaches everywhere for free.

3. The East for luxury vacations

In the east - and I really mean from the northeast to the southeast - one top-class luxury hotel follows the other. That can not be a coincidence. This region must also be correspondingly beautiful. Both Hotels places like the Lux* Grand Gaube and the Shangri-La are excellent, award-winning homes that offer you all the luxury you could wish for. In this respect, I would recommend the coast in the east especially for luxury fans who want to be pampered to the fullest in their hotel.

Mauritius – Which coast is the best?

My conclusion

I think it's become pretty clear in this post which coast I think is by far the best - the west coast and especially the northwest coast of the island. The region is incredibly scenic, has fantastic beaches and an interesting infrastructure with the small towns of Trou aux Biches and Grand Baie. In my opinion, everything fits here - and that makes the northwest coast the best coast in Mauritius. This also applies to the southern section near Flic en Flac, Tamarin Bay and around Le Morne Brabant. All these areas on the west coast are really wonderful and recommended.

Or would you prefer the east coast?

However, you don't have to agree with me at all. I have also read a lot of good things about the east coast of Mauritius. There are also beautiful places, wonderful bays and great, luxurious hotels. I was even thinking about choosing this coast on my next trip to Mauritius to take a closer look at what it really looks like. This is also where the Ile aux Cerfs is located, which is truly a beautiful paradise. I haven't heard much about the southeast near the airport. There is also an exciting area there, which is also home to the great La Vanille Nature Park. You could also try this region on a future trip.

But maybe it's not that important which coast is the best in Mauritius? Because if you have a rental car, you can basically reach any point on the island in less than an hour by car - making every coast the best.
