I count the turtles - one sits directly in front of me, another diagonally to the right behind it and a third animal swims by a few meters away. What's going on here? I think. Otherwise divers speak of fish soup - here in Mauritius there is probably turtle soup. And that's not all: endless fish and exciting wrecks that cover the seabed as artificial reefs. I come at Diving not at all out of amazement - every dive site is a colorful underwater paradise. But why, as an experienced diver, had I heard so little about diving in Mauritius?

My experiences diving in Mauritius

During my holiday in Mauritius I did some dives in the northwest of Mauritius. The diving school was very close to our hotel - that's why I chose it. Overall, there are relatively few diving schools in Mauritius – at least compared to other hotspots like Thailand. As an avid diver, I have been fortunate enough to explore some of Mauritius' incredible dive sites. One of my most memorable experiences was seeing several turtles at once sitting peacefully among the coral.

I went with Dive Spirit Mauritius - a dive center in the northwest of the island that is run by locals and has excellent reviews (5 out of 5 on TripAdvisor, 4,9 out of 5 on Google). The owner of the base, Thierry Jeanne, and his team run the cozy dive center with a lot of heart and commitment. The team picked me up at the hotel and we prepared everything in the spacious dive center. Then we drove to the boat's anchorage which was only a few minutes away from the dive center. From there we took the dive boat to the reefs off Trou aux Biches and Grand Baie. It was worth rediscovering Mauritius from this different perspective - but the diving was one of the highlights of my trip.

The visibility was crystal clear and I could see every detail of the beautiful underwater world around me. Nearby I spotted a variety of colorful fish including clownfish, angelfish and damselfish swimming among the coral and seaweed. Bigeye bass are also relatively common in Mauritius. And a little highlight I encountered on the wreck of the Stella Maru - a frogfish sitting almost invisible on the colorful, coral-covered mast.

Overall we explored some of the beautiful dive sites in the north west of Mauritius. You will find more around the island, which you will probably head for if your hotel is nearby - depending on which one Mauritius coast you have booked On the one hand there are beautiful dive sites in the southwest near Le Morne. And on the other hand in the southeast - such as the Blue Bay Marine Park, which is located directly at the airport.

All in all diving in Mauritius was an incredible experience for me. Unfortunately I have none Mauritius Sharks seen. But the probability of seeing some on the diving trips is relatively high. But even if not: I was fascinated by the breathtaking underwater world with its incredible biodiversity and I would recommend a visit to the island to any diver who has the opportunity.
