Diving in Mauritius is one of the most fascinating UW experiences I have had in my life so far. The island in the Indian Ocean is known for its incredible biodiversity and pristine dive sites. In my diving in Mauritius experience report I would like to share these unique experiences with you. From diving preparation to the best dive sites and insider tips I will cover everything to help you get the most out of your diving holiday in Mauritius. Find out why the island paradise is a dream destination for divers and let my enthusiasm for the breathtaking underwater world of the island inspire you.

Table of Contents show

I count the turtles - one sits directly in front of me, another diagonally to the right behind it and a third animal swims by a few meters away. What's going on here? I think. Otherwise divers speak of fish soup - here in Mauritius there is probably turtle soup. And that's not all: endless fish and exciting wrecks that cover the seabed as artificial reefs. I come at Diving not at all out of amazement - every dive site is a colorful underwater paradise. But why, as an experienced diver, had I heard so little about diving in Mauritius?

Maybe more Mauritius diving reviews are needed to spread the word about the beauty of this underwater paradise. With this post I would like to share my enthusiasm for this beautiful diving area with you. And if I can motivate you not only to visit Mauritius for your honeymoon or a beach holiday, then this review has served its purpose. Instead of typing my fingers sore, I would rather let the pictures do the talking in this blog post to show you how beautiful the underwater world in Mauritius really is.

My experiences diving in Mauritius

During my holiday in Mauritius I did some dives in the northwest of Mauritius. The diving school was very close to our hotel - that's why I chose it. Overall, there are relatively few diving schools in Mauritius – at least compared to other hotspots like Thailand. As an avid diver, I have been fortunate enough to explore some of Mauritius' incredible dive sites. One of my most memorable experiences was seeing several turtles at once sitting peacefully among the coral.

Relaxed diving - by chance I found the diving school Dive Spirit Mauritius.

I went with Dive Spirit Mauritius - a dive center in the northwest of the island that is run by locals and has excellent reviews (5 out of 5 on TripAdvisor, 4,9 out of 5 on Google). The owner of the base, Thierry Jeanne, and his team run the cozy dive center with a lot of heart and commitment. The team picked me up at the hotel and we prepared everything in the spacious dive center. Then we drove to the boat's anchorage which was only a few minutes away from the dive center. From there we took the dive boat to the reefs off Trou aux Biches and Grand Baie. It was worth rediscovering Mauritius from this different perspective - but the diving was one of the highlights of my trip.

The visibility was crystal clear and I could see every detail of the beautiful underwater world around me. Nearby I spotted a variety of colorful fish including clownfish, angelfish and damselfish swimming among the coral and seaweed. Bigeye bass are also relatively common in Mauritius. And a little highlight I encountered on the wreck of the Stella Maru - a frogfish sitting almost invisible on the colorful, coral-covered mast.

Overall we explored some of the beautiful dive sites in the north west of Mauritius. You will find more around the island, which you will probably head for if your hotel is nearby - depending on which one Mauritius coast you have booked On the one hand there are beautiful dive sites in the southwest near Le Morne. And on the other hand in the southeast - such as the Blue Bay Marine Park, which is located directly at the airport.

All in all diving in Mauritius was an incredible experience for me. Unfortunately I have none Mauritius Sharks seen. But the probability of seeing some on the diving trips is relatively high. But even if not: I was fascinated by the breathtaking underwater world with its incredible biodiversity and I would recommend a visit to the island to any diver who has the opportunity.

The coral reefs around Mauritius are an important habitat for a variety of marine life, including colorful corals, tropical fish, rays and turtles. The reefs are also important for maintaining biodiversity and the marine ecosystem as they provide nutrients and habitat for a wide variety of animals. Therefore, one should behave very responsibly in the underwater world of Mauritius. The reefs are still well preserved and there are relatively few divers.

Preparation for diving and snorkeling

Before you dive into the fascinating underwater world of Mauritius, it is important that you make some preparations. First, you should have the necessary skills and qualifications for scuba diving and snorkeling. You should have at least a diving license and experience with diving in open water. Also, you should be in good physical condition and have no health issues that could affect diving. If you have never been diving before, you can do a non-binding introductory dive at a local diving school to find your way into the underwater world in Mauritius. You could also take part in a snorkeling excursion.

The selection of the dive center is also of great importance. There are many dive centers in Mauritius, some better than others. You should look for a base that is run by certified instructors, has good equipment and has a good reputation.
The selection of the dive center is also of great importance. There are many dive centers in Mauritius, some better than others. You should look for a base that is run by certified instructors, has good equipment and has a good reputation.

An important thing you need for diving in Mauritius is the right equipment. You should have a well-fitting diving mask, fins, wetsuit and regulator set. It is also important to bring a dive light and dive computer to maximize visibility and dive time. You can rent all this equipment at a local diving school for an additional charge. However, I recommend owning at least one well-fitting dive mask yourself. It is also advisable to bring your own diving suit and fins, which are rather thin for Mauritius. The rest can then be borrowed on site.

The selection of the dive center is also of great importance. There are many dive centers in Mauritius, some better than others. You should look for a base that is run by certified instructors, has good equipment and has a good reputation. Safety measures such as emergency oxygen and certified divemasters assisting the instructors should also be in place. You can look at the TripAdvisor ratings and Google reviews - that gives you a rough idea of whether a provider is a) reputable and of high quality and b) is still open at all - because dive centers sometimes simply go out of business.

Diving in Mauritius - special features

Anyone who has ever been underwater will be amazed by the breathtaking beauty of the underwater world of Mauritius. I couldn't stop being amazed - that's why I'm writing this report. I was pleasantly surprised because I hadn't read much about diving in Mauritius so far. Actually unusual for such a beautiful diving destination. Also, there are not that many dive centers on site. The reefs are intact and teeming with life, from colorful coral and sponges to tropical fish and marine life like rays and turtles.

A highlight when diving in Mauritius are the sea turtles. These majestic animals are usually very curious and can often be spotted by divers. It is important to treat the turtles with respect and care so as not to disturb their natural environment.

The dive sites in Mauritius are sometimes quite demanding - there are many steep walls and some dive sites are only attractive from a depth of 20 meters. They are therefore not suitable for beginners. Currents, visibility and depths can vary from dive site to dive site, so it is important to check conditions before diving. Some dive sites have strong currents while others are calmer and shallower. It is also important to pay attention to dive time to ensure there is enough air in the tank and safety rules are followed.

Consider experiences of other divers

Mauritius is a popular destination for divers from all over the world. Many share their experiences in online forums such as at divers.net and in travel blogs. Some divers recommend certain dive sites such as Stella Maru, Cathedral and Rempart Serpent for their stunning coral formations and turtle encounters. Others recommend the Blue Bay Marine Park, known for its variety of fish and coral. There are also a variety of dive operators offering various diving packages and experiences including night diving and wreck diving. It pays to read reviews and recommendations from other divers to find the best diving experience in Mauritius.

Tips for divers in Mauritius

If you decide to dive in Mauritius, there are some tips that will help you get the most out of your diving experience. These tips are especially important for beginners. I have compiled my recommendations for you below:

  • Respect the environment and do not touch corals or other living things.
  • Avoid sunscreen and other products that can harm the sea and coral.
  • Dive with a certified instructor or guide to ensure you are diving safely and not damaging the reefs.
  • Find out about the dive sites and local conditions beforehand.
  • Watch your dive time and never dive alone.
  • If you are planning a diving trip to Mauritius, there are many dive operators and resorts that offer diving packages and diving trips. Some resorts even offer a free introductory scuba diving session to help beginners get started.

It's also a good idea to combine scuba diving with other activities like snorkeling, kayaking or boat trips to get the most out of your vacation.
