Mauritius is one of the most beautiful travel destinations in the world - and we had an incredibly wonderful time there. The island is quite large, densely populated and has an eventful past - this combination guarantees many sights. Of course we weren't able to visit everything. But in this experience report I will introduce you to the sights in Mauritius that we visited on site.

We were in Mauritius with that Rental car on the way and were able to travel wonderfully to the most beautiful sights on the island. Most of the attractions - and there are a lot of them - are spread fairly evenly across the island, so you can get all the way around if you want to visit them. Mauritius sights – the main attractions

I can discover an incredible amount in Mauritius. Across the island there are countless churches and temples, natural national parks with wild animals, jungles and waterfalls, and a marine world that is second to none. That's why I plan enough time on my trip to really enjoy all the sights in Mauritius. Especially if you are traveling with a rental car, you should be able to easily reach many of the highlights. I will give you an overview of the most important Mauritius sights.

1. Black River Gorges National Park

The Black River Gorges National Park is located in the southwest of Mauritius and is the largest of the island's three national parks. There are numerous sights in the park alone that you shouldn't miss. These include Ganga Talao, the holy Hindu pilgrimage site, the famous Alexandra Falls, the Chamarel Waterfall, spectacular viewpoints and the Seven Colored Earth. The Black River Gorges National Park is one of Mauritius' top attractions and should be at the top of your to-do list.

2. La Vanille Natural Park

The La Vanilla Natural Park In the very south of Mauritius there is a five hectare area in which there is a breeding station for giant tortoises and crocodiles. Numerous animal species such as monkeys and flying foxes live in the park. But the main attraction is definitely the Aldabra giant tortoises, which are raised in the park and then taken to Reunion Island and Madagascar to be reintroduced there too.

3. Rochester Falls

The Rochester Falls waterfall is located in the Savanne district of Mauritius. The lintel is not particularly high, but it is very wide. There is also a wide basin in front of it where visitors can swim. It is located in the very south of Mauritius between the towns of Soulliac and St Felix. Both visitors and locals jump from the rocks into the pool in front - at their own risk, of course! I would only do this in the company of a knowledgeable local.

4. Notre-Dame Auxiliatrice de Cap Malheureux

The Cap Malheureux is the northern tip of the island of Mauritius. The area is famous for the small Catholic church Notre-Dame Auxiliatrice de Cap Malheureux, which is located directly on the beach. Locals love getting married there - the chapel is a popular photo opportunity for holidaymakers.

5. Le Morne Brabant

Le Morne Brabant is a mountain located directly on the coast in the southwest of Mauritius. It is 556 meters high. The elevation is spectacularly surrounded by lagoons. There are also numerous luxury hotels on the beaches at the foot of the mountain. The mountain has a tragic history: In 1835, a group of slaves took refuge on the mountain. When a police squad went to the mountain to tell the slaves that slavery would be abolished in Mauritius, the people threw themselves from the mountain to their deaths because they misunderstood the police officers' message. The Le Morne Brabant mountain is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

6. Port Louis

Port Louis is the capital of Mauritius, located in the west of Mauritius and has about 150.000 inhabitants. There is a lot to discover in the city: the French colonial architecture, markets, the Champs de Mars racecourse and the harbor invite you to discover it. In a 2018 city ranking, Port Louis took first place among the most livable cities in Africa.

7. Ile aux Benitiers

The Ile aux Benitiers is a small island located in the bay off Black River at the foot of Le Morne Brabant. It is uninhabited and at the same time a popular destination for day visitors who want to spend a day at the beach there. It is only two kilometers long and 500 meters wide. On the west side there are numerous picnic areas where guests from excursion boats hold barbecues. However, a large part of the island is still completely natural. The Ile aux Benitiers is excellent for snorkeling.

8. Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam Botanical Garden

Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam Botanical Garden (Pamplemousses Botanical Garden) is a natural park covering 37 hectares located just north of Port Louis. It is the oldest botanical garden in the southern hemisphere. The park is known for water lilies, water lilies, ebony trees and several other plant species. The park also has an old colonial mansion and an enclosure with giant tortoises. The Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam Botanical Garden (Pamplemousses Botanical Garden) is one of the most important sights in Mauritius and should definitely be on your bucket list.

Mauritius sights review - so much to discover?

My conclusion

There are so many sights to discover in Mauritius. The island is comparatively large, quite densely populated and also has an eventful past - this is the mix that creates many sightseeing hotspots, all of which have their own story to tell. My absolute highlights were the La Vanille Nature Park, where you can admire hundreds of giant tortoises. And our trip to Black River Gorges Park was simply amazing. I couldn't name a particular temple that is particularly worth seeing. We often stopped along the way when we saw one.

And our boat tour to the Ile aux Bernitiers was pretty awesome too. Unfortunately, we return from Mauritius after the trip and have one certainty: Unfortunately, we have not yet seen all the sights of this wonderful island. But that's also a good reason to return.
