Best travel time Mauritius – When to go to the island?

by

When is the best time to travel to Mauritius is an extremely exciting question. Because the answer is by no means clear. When you should travel to the beautiful, paradise island is a relative and subjective matter. That's why in this article I can only tell you when you should go on vacation and what preferences you have. So when is the best time to visit Mauritius?

Mauritius is an incredibly beautiful place Island, which we enjoyed so much during our stay. There is so much you can do and see in this paradise corner of the world. And of course enjoy the idyllic beaches. But of course that only works if you have nice weather. Worst of all, you're sitting in your hotel room, it's storming and raining for days - and you suddenly realize why your vacation was so cheap.

In the bad weather season, trips to the island are of course significantly cheaper than in the sunny and beautiful peak season. If you want to get a bargain, you can choose this time. And of course you can be lucky and still have good weather. But I wouldn't push my luck and would rather stick to them best time consider it to be the island. I would particularly want to avoid the time of cyclones as much as possible. There is another reason for this: from January to March it is summer in Mauritius - and it is humid and hot.

When should you travel to Mauritius?

Mauritius is located in the tropics and is located in the southern hemisphere. That means the seasons there are reversed to ours. And because it is always nice and warm in the tropical zone, there is no such thing as a cold winter. These are good conditions for your vacation on the island. However, experience has shown that Mauritius is also one of the travel destinations where you always have to expect a little rain and clouds. If we want to determine the best time to travel to Mauritius, we can proceed as follows: We use the process of elimination.

The most important thing is to avoid the period of cyclones. This runs from mid-November to early May. I would suggest that this time be canceled for our Mauritius trip. This still leaves a period from mid-May to mid-November - i.e. summer in Mauritius. So you have plenty of time to travel to Mauritius. And to make a further distinction, I would now consider whether you prefer slightly cooler weather (winter) or warmer weather (spring and fall).

If you like it a little cooler in Mauritius

In this case I would choose the winter in Mauritius, which is rather dry and cool - cool for Mauritius mind you. We are talking about the time between mid-May and mid-September, so a comparatively long period of time. The maximum temperature during the day then “only” rises to 24 degrees Celsius. This time is perfect for hiking and doing things on the island. If you're a golfer, hiker or stand-up paddleboarder, this time is ideal. You can also take extended rental car tours with sightseeing. You are unlikely to have any problems with the heat during this time. And it is comparatively dry and sunny too.

If you like it a little warmer in Mauritius

If you are a beach vacationer, like to go swimming and – like me – prefer it a little warmer, May is still a good time for you. This is autumn on the island. But I wouldn't recommend it. Because in the sunny month of May it is also beautiful in Central Europe. So why should you travel to the tropics? The time between mid-September and mid-November is better, when it gets autumnal in Europe. Then you can wonderfully extend your summer in Mauritius. I was able to experience this time in Mauritius myself because I was on the island at the end of October. In my opinion, this is the ideal time to travel.

In spring, autumn and winter it is not quite as hot in Mauritius - between 22 and 30 degrees Celsius - and tends to be drier than in summer. Photo: Sascha Tegtmeyer

Cyclones in Mauritius

Even paradise can be hit by harsh forces of nature from time to time. Cyclones in particular, which can occur in Mauritius, are a phenomenon that one should be prepared for. These cyclones are powerful tropical storms that can have enormous wind speeds of up to 250 kilometers per hour. When they unfold, they unleash a tremendous force that makes it almost impossible to enter or leave the island for several days.

These impressive weather phenomena are most likely to occur during Mauritius' cyclone season, which mainly extends between mid-November and early May. That's a long period of time. On average, there are around 15 cyclones in Mauritius every year during this time. However, the weather is unpredictable - there is no absolute certainty that they will not occur in other months.

Take precautionary measures during cyclone season

So if you decide to travel to Mauritius during this time, it is advisable to keep a close eye on the local weather forecast. This way you can ensure that you don't experience any unpleasant surprises and that your vacation plans can continue unhindered. When a hurricane hits the idyllic island, it has far-reaching consequences for air traffic and daily life there.

All flights are canceled and many activities and attractions are closed until the raging storm calms down. In order not to be helpless in such situations, it is important that you inform yourself in detail before your trip and know how to behave. This way you can avoid inconvenience and stay safe.

Most of the time, the weather in Mauritius is wonderful - the best time to travel is from October to December.

When is the best time to visit Mauritius?

My conclusion

In my opinion, the best time to travel to Mauritius is October and November - at this time it is spring on the island and it is warm and dry. I was in Mauritius myself at that time and can really recommend this time of travel. Photo: Sascha Tegtmeyer

I love Mauritius - and I would like to travel to this wonderful island as often as possible in my life. But from what I've read so far, cyclones should be avoided if possible. Not only can they ruin your vacation with constant rain and storms, they can also be downright dangerous. A cyclone is likely to be something like a hurricane is in the Caribbean - an extremely dangerous natural event.

If you want to be sure that your vacation in Mauritius is unforgettable, I would tend to stick to the peak season, spring on the island. Of course, that's no guarantee of good weather - there's no such thing - but the chances are better that you'll get plenty of sun and warmth. And that’s exactly what we want on our dream vacation.
