If you are on holiday in Fieberbrunn and the PillerseeTal, you will almost certainly want to go on some exciting mountain tours and discover the most beautiful hiking trails in the region. Of course you can start your hikes in the valley. Or you can save your energy and hike from the middle or mountain station of the numerous cable cars. What is hiking like in Fieberbrunn and the PillerseeTal? What is there to discover? And is it worth it? We have put together my tips, recommendations and the most important information for you in this experience report.
Even as a child, I loved hiking and riding gondolas. Preferably both in combination – for me they somehow belong together. The ride up and down was one of the highlights of the entire vacation - the technology with the cabins and fist-thick wire ropes, the floating and the panoramic view of mountains and valleys have always fascinated me. Hiking means freedom for me – and breathing deeply. On our vacation in Fieberbrunn in the PillerseeTal I took it to the extreme in the truest sense of the word:
Not only did we go hiking every day, we also went hiking with them Mountain railways in the PillerseeTal We drove once or twice every day and had the gondolas and chair lifts take us comfortably to the hiking area. What a wonderful experience! Now you may be asking yourself: Isn't that very expensive?
A single trip up and down the mountain costs around 30 euros per person - and if you go on vacation every day, that quickly adds up to around 250 euros per person per week. No problem with that PillerseeTal Card - you can use each cable car once a day for free and have carefree hiking fun.
Video – Hiking in Fieberbrunn is so beautiful
Below I have picked out a video for you in which you can clearly see how beautiful hiking in Fieberbrunn is. There you can see a hiking tour to the Wildseeloder.
Hike every day for two weeks in Fieberbrunn and the PillerseeTal
And so it happened that we were on holiday in Fieberbrunn every day for two weeks hike were. We were particularly active in the three large hiking areas in the PillerseeTal: in Fieberbrunn, at Jakobskreuz and in Waidring. These are the three peaks of the PillerseeTal that you can reach by cable car.
And if you - like me - suffer from a fear of heights, which is more common than you think, you also have incredibly good opportunities to hike in the valley in the PillerseeTal - for example on a large loop around the Pillersee. The whole region is simply wonderful for hiking - we really had a lot of fun here for two weeks.

The three most important hiking areas in the PillerseeTal – Fieberbrunn, Jakobskreuz / Buchensteinwand and Steinplatte Waidring
In PillerseeTal there are basically three large hiking areas and so many different ones Walking, to which the cable cars lead: that is Fieberbrunn, the Jakobskreuz on the Buchensteinwand and the Steinplatte Waidring. In all three areas you can hike and be active to your heart's content.
We took a long look at all three areas during our holiday in Fieberbrunn and went there to explore everything. There are also various options for hiking in the valley - for example on the Biathlon World Cup path in Hochfilzen or on an extensive loop around the Pillersee.
Below I will introduce you to these wonderful hiking areas in a little more detail. We really took two weeks to explore the area and really loved it.
1. Fieberbrunn cable car to Streuboden and Lärchfilzkogel
That was probably the gondola ride that we took most often on vacation: the ride to Streuboden and Lärchfilzkogel to reach the hiking area of Fieberbrunn, where you can really cover kilometer after kilometer, enjoy the panoramic view over the entire PillerseeTal and have a wonderful stop can – for example in Wildalpgatterl.
Of course, you have the choice here: take the gondola up and hike down - or hike up first and then go down. Of course you can also hike both ways. But depending on how far you travel in the hiking area, it may make sense to save some energy by using the Freudenbrunn cable car are driving. The Fieberbrunn mountain railway will be rebuilt in the summer of 2024 and will unfortunately be out of operation during this time.
Adventure playground at Streuboden
I think the ideal way to get started is to pay a visit to the litter floors. Especially if you are traveling as a family, you can have a lot of fun at the middle station in Fieberbrunn. There is the Timoks Wilde Welt theme park with a water world, a climbing park, a summer toboggan run and other attractions.
This is the ideal place to get in the mood for hiking in Fieberbrunn. And a little further uphill there is a fallow deer enclosure at the Wildalpgatterl, which is also very interesting for young and old.
Hiking on the Lärchfilzkogel
Once you have really acclimatised, you can start hiking. It starts from the middle station in Fieberbrunn. From here you have two options: either you hike from the middle station to the Lärchfilzkogel. Or you can take the cable car to the Lärchfilzkogel and start your hikes there. Both are possible and we have done both.
You can hike two beautiful paths from the middle station to the Lärchfilzkogel - a shorter, steeper one that goes up to the right from around the Wildalpgatterl or a wide, well-developed path that leads over the Wildalm, which is significantly less steep. Both paths are beautiful - and we walked them both. The following applies to Fieberbrunn: Many paths lead to your destination and if you're on vacation for a few days, you can try them all out.
Hiking route from Lärchfilzkogel to Wildseeloder
This is probably the most frequented and popular hiking route in Fieberbrunnen: from the Lärchfilzkogel to the Wildseeloder. You first drive to the top station of the gondola. At the top of the Lärchfilzkogel you have a fantastic panoramic view. And from here we start on a rather narrow path towards Wildalm and from there to the Wildseeloder.
The route is really beautiful and you have wonderful views of the mountain range on one side and the PillerseeTal on the other side. From the Wildalm we continue up to the Wildseeloder and the Wildseeloder - the landmark of Fieberbrunn. You can stop at a restaurant up there and even take a boat trip on the mountain lake.
2. Chairlift to Jakobskreuz and Buchensteinwand
The second big hiking tour in PillerseeTal is to or on Jacob's Cross on the beech stone wall. A chairlift takes you from St. Jakob in Haus to the lofty heights. Up there is the highest, accessible summit cross in the world, which measures an impressive 29 meters and offers various viewing platforms for the ultimate panoramic view.
It is a total of 1450 meters above sea level. The mountain doesn't look that high from the valley - once you get to the top, you still have a wonderful panoramic view of Steinplatte Waidring and the Lofer Alps.
You can spend a lot of time at the top - look at the exhibitions in the Jakobskreuz, stop off at the Das Weitblick restaurant and walk the flower trail above the Buchensteinwand. There is also another summit cross there that is also worth seeing.
The most beautiful hiking route on the Jakobskreuz and the Buchensteinwand
Once you have taken the chairlift up to the Buchensteinwand, you go back down on foot - after all, we also want to hike a few kilometers on our tour. Or you can hike up and then take the train back down - that's of course also possible. You can walk a wide, paved path from Jakobskreuz to St. Jakob in Haus if your car is parked there at the valley station.
But in principle, further modifications of the route are also possible: You can above St. Jakob i. H. keep left and walk on a forest path towards Fieberbrunn. Of course, this extends the round immensely. It is also possible to take a route towards Ortisei and even Hochfilzen. All of this is possible here on the Buchensteinwand because it is so beautifully centrally located in the PillerseeTal.
As is so often the case, many different paths lead to the goal. You can hike and explore, maybe try out some new trails and see where you like it best. We are some distances with the E bike left to see more of the beautiful area. Of course, real hikers do this on foot. Since the Steinplatte Waidring is a high plateau, this mountain is particularly suitable for people who are a little afraid of heights.
3. Waidring cable car to Steinplatte
The Steinplatte Waidring is also a wonderful destination for hiking in the PillerseeTal. Here you can take the bright red cable car up to 1860 meters above sea level and reach the Steinplatte high plateau, which is a wonderful hiking area - as we discovered.
We liked it here so much that we went hiking here several times during our vacation in Fieberbrunn. The area is similar to the hiking area in Fieberbrunn, very spacious and you can really do kilometers here.
After arriving at the Steinplatte Waidring, you have no choice but to take a detour to Triassic Park. Because the dinosaurs are omnipresent on the Steinplatt. If you have children, anyway.
But adults also get their money's worth here between the stalactite cave and a brilliant viewing platform dozens of meters above an abyss. First take a look around, take in the impressions - and then go hiking.
The most beautiful hiking route Steinplatte Waidring
On the Steinplatte Waidring you will find two main paths that you can take directly. One leads to the top of the stone slab. To do this, you first walk to the storage pond where the aquatic dinosaur can be found and then up to the right.
The path is not particularly far and after about two kilometers you will arrive at the summit cross and the Bäreck mountain station. There is another storage pond there - and you have a fantastic view up there - even as far as Lake Chiemsee in Germany.
If you prefer to walk downhill, you can walk from the mountain station down to the Stellenalm or to the Steinplatte car park. Instead of taking the cable car, you can also drive halfway up and hike from there - which also sounds pretty tempting. Overall, the hike will probably be longer.

Hikes in the valley around Fieberbrunn
If you - like me - suffer from a slight fear of heights, you don't necessarily have to go up the mountain to have a great hike in the PillerseeTal. You have so many incredible opportunities to hike in the valley around Fieberbrunn - without any slopes or gorges next to the hiking trail. There are some rounds that are really very pleasant and still promise wonderful sights and views - such as the Biathlon World Cup path Hochfilzen, the round around the Pillersee or the promenade of the Fieberbrunner Ache.
1. The tour around Pillersee
It couldn't be easier. You go to Pillersee by bus or car. There you have two parking options - one at the Forellen Ranch and the other at the lake access in St. Ulrich. From there you can start your hiking tour around the lake. The hiking distance should be around five to seven kilometers. You don't necessarily have to walk around the entire lake. A walk on the east bank is very nice because it is car-free.
On your way you will come to SUP rental Pillersee over, you can try archery and in some very good restaurants like the Trout Ranch come in. If the loop is too short for you, you can go further at the northern end of the Pillersee to the bee nature trail and the Teufelsklamm.
For hikers who prefer to hike in the flat valley in PillerseeTal, the area around the lake is really ideal. It's so idyllic there. During our two weeks in Fieberbrunn we were there several times and also covered a lot of kilometers.
2. Hiking on the Biathlon World Cup Trail Hochfilzen
The second easy round in the valley, which is also highly recommended and is even suitable for strollers, is the Biathlon World Cup Path Hochfilzen. It begins in the town of the same name and leads through a valley towards St. Ulrich am Pillersee. In summer, 16 stations can be discovered there. You can cover a total of 15 kilometers here and get a lot of information about the sport of biathlon.
There is also a beautiful lake on the way - the Wiesensee, which you definitely shouldn't miss. There is also a Kneipp station where you can refresh your feet.
I can only warmly recommend the Biathlon World Cup Path Hochfilzen. Here you can take a wonderful tour through the idyllic valley and enjoy nature.
3. Hiking along the Fieberbrunner Ache
Another round of hiking in Fieberbrunn - or for a long walk - is a tour along the Fieberbrunner Ache. The river has a very beautiful promenade that runs through the middle of the town. So you can walk the entire length of the place on the promenade. And continue to follow the course of the river on the outskirts.
So you can continue on one side towards Feistenau and on the other side towards St. Johann in Tirol. I love the rivers in the Alps because they have such wonderful, clear water - and that's exactly how it is with the Fieberbrunner Ache. You can also cover many kilometers here. I mainly use the route Jogging in Fieberbrunn covered.
Many other hikes in PillerseeTal and the surrounding area
The entire region in Tyrol is simply ideal for hiking - both in PillerseeTal, in Fieberbrunn and in the entire surrounding area. Hikers and climbers can take full advantage here. If you're on holiday in Fieberbrunn, you can also take a trip to the Loferer Steinberge or to Ellmau to the Wilder Kaiser, for example. You have so many options locally. You can also find many other hiking routes in Fieberbrunn at Komoot and AllTrails.
