PillerseeTal e-bike experience report – explore Fieberbrunn & Co. on a bike?

by

During our holiday in Fieberbrunn, we were fascinated by the people who seemingly effortlessly cycled up the mountain and swung back down into the valley. Mountain bike and e-bike tours in the Pillerseetal between Fieberbrunn, St. Jakob in Haus, St. Ulrich am Pillersee, Waidring and Hochfilzen have a huge advantage: you can see and discover a lot more in a very short time than when hiking. This makes the e-bike an excellent alternative. How is it to explore the region by bike? What advantages and disadvantages does it have? I have compiled the most important information for you in my e-bike in the PillerseeTal field report.

I had never been enthusiastic about e-bikes before. When someone proudly showed me their battery-powered bike, I shrugged. For me, cycling has always meant moving forward with your own muscle power. The sporty aspect was in the foreground and I didn't think it was too sporty to drive through the countryside with an electric motor. That was all before we went on vacation PillerseeTal (travelogue), where we rented e-bikes for the first time to explore the area.

We had seen so many bikers in Fieberbrunn and the surrounding area racing up and down the mountains with their electrically powered vehicles - it looked like fun and we wanted to try it out. And this much can be revealed in advance: Now I know what people value about e-bikes - and why they choose an e-mountain bike instead of a conventional bike.

Explore the region by e-bike

So we took a look at the PillerseeTal region on the e-bike - and that was really an excellent decision. Hiking is a wonderful thing – I love it. For me it is an active form of meditation. But exploring a new area by bike simply opens up completely new possibilities. You can move much faster compared to walking. You don't have to race with the e-bike - and you can still move faster and discover and explore more.

And especially in a region as diverse as the PillerseeTal, there is just so much to see. And when you see something beautiful, you can stop, pause and take a break - or stay there for the rest of the day. Because with the e-bike you are particularly flexible. What is it like to explore the PillerseeTal region by bike? What are the advantages and disadvantages? I have put together the most important information for you in my e-bike ride in PillerseeTal experience report.

I would like to inspire you to take the e-bike on your PillerseeTal holiday

I want you with this blog post holiday tips for your travel planning inspire and motivate you to try out the e-mountain bike as a means of transport during your holiday in PillerseeTal. At first it might seem a bit strange to switch to an electrically assisted bike - especially if you are an avid traditional cyclist. At least that's how it was for me. But believe me when I tell you that e-biking in Fieberbrunn and Co. gives you the opportunity to explore landscapes and routes that you might otherwise find too strenuous or even inaccessible.

Always through the idyllic nature, past blooming meadows: Riding an e-bike in the PillerseeTal is a relaxed affair.

You don't usually use the additional power that you get from the e-bike to clamber around in a completely unsportsmanlike manner, but rather it enables you to climb steep mountains and cover longer distances without arriving completely exhausted . After a day on the e-mountain bike you really know what you've done - the fitness effect is more than given. And there really is so much to see in the beautiful Pillerseetal.

My experiences with the e-bike in the Pillerseetal - from Fieberbrunn via St. Jakob im Haus to the Wiesensee and the Biathlon World Cup path in Hochfilzen

We have the e-bikes in our accommodation, dem Hotel Alte Post Fieberbrunn (field report) borrowed. There we received two brand new bikes from Cube and Stevens for our tours. And off we went. Helmet on, GoPro attached to the bike and off you go with a fully charged battery. In fact, you first need a moment to get used to the new technology, because you can set different levels of support on the e-bike. The more the bike assists, the faster the battery will run out. That's why you'll always choose the electric engagement that helps you just enough to move forward effortlessly.

You can make some discoveries along the way.

After familiarizing ourselves with the bikes, we started our first tour in the center of Fieberbrunn and from there made our way to St. Jakob in Haus. It didn't take long for us to see the benefits of e-bikes. It was still in place with a decent incline up the mountain. Even as experienced athletes, we would have had to push on this steep incline without an electric drive. But the ascent is worth it: Once at the top, wonderful dirt roads begin, lots of untouched nature and dense coniferous forest, which smells spicy in summer and provides shade. I got a smile on my face and my first thought was: Yes, we did everything right.

Without an e-bike, we probably wouldn't have come here at all. And so we cycled through the PillerseeTal on our e-bikes, sporty but also relaxed, stopped where we liked, took the chairlift to the Jakobskreuz, refreshed ourselves at the crystal-clear, idyllic Wiesensee and are the station of the Biathlon World Cup path ridden in Hochfilzen. What a wonderful experience it was to explore the region on an e-mountain bike - a real picture book day. My experiences with e-biking in PillerseeTal and Fieberbrunn are therefore more than positive - and I can only advise every holidaymaker to maybe switch from hiker to e-biker for a day and try out this type of locomotion.

The most beautiful e-bike routes in the Pillerseetal from Fieberbrunn

E-bike riding is a wonderful way to enjoy nature in PillerseeTal and to explore new areas that you might have missed without the electric bike. If you are looking for a place where you can enjoy this pleasure to the fullest, then the Pillerseetal in Tyrol around Fieberbrunn is exactly the right place for you. This idyllic region offers a wealth of e-bike routes for all tastes and levels. Regardless of whether you want to take a leisurely ride with the family, a challenging tour with friends or an adventurous journey of discovery on your own, you will find the perfect route for your needs in PillerseeTal.

Before you set off, however, you should find out about the necessary equipment. Riding an e-bike requires special equipment that guarantees you safety, comfort and fun. This includes a suitable e-bike, a helmet and, depending on your needs, goggles, gloves, a water bottle or a backpack with water. A first aid kit, repair kit and if necessary a map or GPS device can be helpful. You should also wear appropriate clothing, such as a rain jacket or sunscreen, depending on the weather and season.

Below I present some of the most beautiful e-bike routes in PillerseeTal around Fieberbrunn, some of which I have tried out myself. These routes inspired me with their variety, the remoteness in untouched nature and their fun factor. They lead through picturesque landscapes, past historical sights such as churches and through the quaint villages of the region. Each route has its own charm and offers you the opportunity to experience the Pillerseetal from a different perspective.

1. Tour with the e-bike from Fieberbrunn via St. Jakob in Haus, the Wiesensee to Hochfilzen

This e-mountain bike tour through the Pillerseetal was really an experience for all the senses - and we really enjoyed it. The route leads from Fieberbrunn through country lanes through green meadows and shady forests to Hochfilzen - the Mecca of biathlon sports. There are numerous highlights to discover along the way, such as the imposing Jakobskreuz on the summit of the Buchenstein, which can be reached by bike or chairlift.

Or the picturesque Wiesensee, which invites you to refresh yourself or have a picnic. There is also a refreshing Kneipp facility. The tour is around 30 kilometers long and has - depending on whether you cycle to the Jakobskreuz - between 150 and 600 meters in altitude.

It is suitable for beginners and advanced, as the e-mountain bikes make the inclines easier. The route is well signposted and mostly follows paved or gravel paths. For the return trip from Hochfilzen to Fieberbrunn you can take the cycle path above the railway line - or, if you are exhausted, take the train from Hochfilzen. The e-mountain bike tour is a wonderful way to explore and enjoy the beauty and diversity of the PillerseeTal.

2. Tour by e-bike from Fieberbrunn via St. Jakob in Haus, St. Ulrich am Pillersee to Waidring

On this tour you can see a lot of the PillerseeTal. You start again in Fieberbrunn and either ride on the bike path on the road to St. Jakob in Haus. You can of course make a detour to the Jakobskreuz if you are in good physical condition. But you should probably save your strength because the tour is still long. Because it goes on to St. Ulrich am Pillersee. There you can comfortably circle the Pillersee with the e-bike, take a break and eat in one of the great restaurants - for example in the Seestüberl directly on the lake or the trout ranch, which we tried out ourselves and were very enthusiastic.

Cycle paths lead around the idyllic Pillersee, so that you can easily circle the lake in less than an hour. SUP on the Pillersee Experience report Stand Up Paddling
Cycle paths lead around the idyllic Pillersee, so that you can easily circle the lake in less than an hour.

Then it continues on the route to Waidring. Between the Pillersee and Waidring you will find a brand new, extra-wide bike path that will make the picturesque, imposing route through the gorge and through the forest between the mountain massifs particularly pleasant. On the way you will also pass the Teufelsklamm and the bee nature trail. Of course you can also stop by when you have the opportunity. Finally you reach Waidring and are probably quite exhausted after the long tour.

Picturesque Waidring - you can easily get here by bike from Fieberbrunn and the other picturesque holiday resorts.

Depending on how long you were on the road, you can of course take the gondola up to the Steinplatte by bike. However, I would allow at least two hours of extra time for this. If you arrive exhausted in Waidring, you can also take a refreshing break at the bathing lake and outdoor pool - a beautiful swimming pool where you can cool off. After your visit to Waidring, you can either return by bike - or you can take the regional bus back, which is free with the guest card.

3. A highlight - bike & hike tour to the Wildseeloderhaus

One of the most unforgettable e-bike adventures in Pillerseetal is the Bike & Hike Tour to the Wildseeloderhaus. This unique combination of cycling and hiking makes it possible to experience the majestic mountain landscape of the PillerseeTal in a very special way. As soon as Fieberbrunn is behind you, the tour leads to the Streuboden reservoir, which is located slightly below the Streuboden Alm. This shallow body of water is a good place to take a short break to enjoy the breathtaking panorama of the surrounding mountains of the Kitzbühel Alps and take a few photos.

After a short stop and a refreshing drink of water, we continue up the alpine path. Soon afterwards, the Wildalpgatterl mountain inn appears with its enchanting herb and vegetable garden. Despite the temptation to stop off at the excellent restaurant (we have tested it several times), you should keep your sights on your destination and continue cycling up the partly forest-lined path up to the Alpengasthof Lärchfilzhochalm.

About 1,5 hours later you reach an open plateau at the foot of the Wildseeloder. The sight of the soft, gentle peaks of the Wildseeloder, the Henne and the Maureracker - also known as Marokka - is so breathtaking that it is worth stopping and capturing this panorama. With this view in mind, you cycle the last switchbacks up to the Wildalm, where the friendly dairyman allows you to park your bike. Because from here you can continue on foot.

From the Wildalm, a beautiful trail, partly laid out in steps, leads to the Wildseelodersee, one of the most beautiful lakes in Tyrol - and the most popular Instagram motif of the PillerseeTal. After a hike of around three quarters of an hour you will reach this breathtaking and crystal-clear lake. The sight of the lake, also known as Wildsee, and the Henne mountain range surrounding it are simply spectacular. The Wildsee is a cirque lake that was formed by a glacier during the Ice Age. On hot summer days, it offers ice-cold refreshment - but only for really hardened adventurers. For relaxing on the picnic blanket, you can't beat this place. In the quiet embrace of the mountains, you can switch off completely and enjoy the breathtaking beauty of nature to the fullest.

The diverse advantages of e-biking

The world of cycling has experienced a remarkable revolution in recent years due to the rapidly growing popularity of e-biking. Once ridiculed as a niche phenomenon, e-biking has established itself as a serious and sought-after discipline. Its increasing popularity is the result of a unique combination of traditional cycling culture and innovative technology, offering a variety of advantages that benefit both beginner and experienced cyclists.

The appeal of e-biking is that it takes the feeling of freedom, independence and joy of cycling to a whole new level. It opens up a world of possibilities ranging from conquering steep hills to relaxing rides in nature. The support from the motor makes every pedal stroke easier, every route easier to cover and every ride more pleasant.

Exploring Fieberbrunn and the surrounding area by e-bike offers many advantages. E-Bike Pillerseetal Fieberbrunn field report
Exploring Fieberbrunn and the surrounding area by e-bike offers many advantages.

But the e-bike is more than just a simple way of getting around. It is a lifestyle choice that combines health, leisure and environmental protection. It is a way to integrate sport and exercise into everyday life, appreciate the natural environment and travel the world with a smaller ecological footprint. Whether you're getting on a bike for the first time or have decades of riding experience, e-biking has something to offer that will enrich and expand your passion for cycling.

E-biking is also a social experience. With motorized assistance, people of different fitness levels can cycle together and experience the same route with the same enjoyment. It offers a platform for shared experiences and brings generations together. E-biking is more than just a fad, it's a new way to experience cycling. With its multiple benefits, it offers a unique and enriching experience to anyone who wants to try it.

1. Flexible sporting challenge

One of the most outstanding features of e-biking is the ability to choose how intense the sporting challenge should be. With the support of the engine, you can physically exert yourself if you wish, but you always have the option of using the additional power when your strength flags. In this way, e-biking becomes an individually adaptable workout that enables both gentle training and demanding sports units.

2. More distance and less effort

Greater distances are no problem with an e-bike. The motorized support also makes longer journeys and steep climbs a pleasant experience. This means that you can see and experience more, while at the same time exerting less effort. In addition, enough energy remains during the journey to enjoy the breathtaking landscape around you.

3. Experiences for the whole family

E-bikes open the door to shared adventures for the whole family - regardless of the fitness level of the individual members. Whether children, adults or grandparents - thanks to the motor support, everyone can cycle up high and enjoy the beauty of nature. E-bikes not only expand the circle of possible sports partners, but also enable shared experiences across generations.

4. Tours that are easy on the joints

Another major advantage of e-biking is that it is easy on the joints. Especially on combination tours that combine hiking and e-biking, you can save yourself long descents, which often lead to knee problems or other complaints. Instead, you can easily and comfortably ride downhill with the e-bike.

5. Gentle entry into cycling

For those who are just starting to discover cycling, the e-bike is an ideal partner. The motorized assistance allows for a gentle introduction to cycling and promotes self-confidence and enthusiasm for getting around on two wheels.

The bottom line is that e-biking is a fantastic way to combine physical activity, nature experiences and leisure time fun. It expands the possibilities of traditional cycling and makes it more accessible and enjoyable for people of all ages and fitness levels.

E-bike in the Pillerseetal field report – explore Fieberbrunn & Co. on a bike?

My detailed conclusion

The Pillerseetal, a picturesque region in Austria, includes the communities of Fieberbrunn, St. Jakob in Haus, St. Ulrich am Pillersee, Waidring and Hochfilzen. It offers a stunning backdrop for outdoor activities, especially cycling. Recently, e-biking has gained popularity in the region as it is an innovative way to explore the region's natural beauty. Conventional cycling requires considerable physical exertion, especially in hilly areas like the Pillerseetal. E-bikes, on the other hand, offer electric assistance that makes cycling less strenuous and accessible to a wider demographic. With this technology, longer distances and steeper hills can be tackled than would be possible with a conventional bicycle.

During our stay in Fieberbrunn we observed many people riding e-bikes up and down the steep slopes of the region at high speed. This phenomenon is evidence of the growing popularity of e-bikes as a recreational sport. On our first excursion with the e-bike we were able to delve deeper into the landscape of the PillerseeTal. Thanks to the greater range and flexibility that e-bikes offer, we've been able to explore trails that would have been less accessible on foot. Plus, the electric assist allowed us to ride at our own pace and stop to enjoy the view whenever we wanted.

A special memory is our drive from Fieberbrunn to St. Jakob in Haus, a route with steep climbs and impressive views. The e-bike allowed us to tackle this climb without undue effort. This shows that e-bikes offer the opportunity to explore a diverse range of terrain while minimizing the physical challenge. The use of e-bikes in the Pillerseetal has expanded our understanding of outdoor activities and our approach to exploring nature. It has allowed us to see more of the area's beauty while also covering a greater distance.

For anyone planning a holiday in the Pillerseetal, trying out e-bikes is worth considering.
