During our holiday in the PillerseeTal we were particularly impressed by one hiking area: the Steinplatte Waidring. The high plateau at up to 1869 meters is ideal for logging a lot of kilometers and going on a discovery tour. There is also the Triassic Park at the height - a theme park with life-sized dinosaurs, a playground, water features, a stalactite cave and a spectacular viewing platform over the abyss. What can you see at Steinplatte Waidring? Is a trip worth it? In my experience report with lots of helpful tips, I have put together the most important facts and information about the high plateau for you.

That's going pretty high, I think, as we climb into the bright red gondola at the valley station in Waidring. You can't even see the mountain station, we first have to go over a hilltop before you can see the top. On the way up we have a spectacular view over the valley, over Waidring and up to the Pillersee and up to the Jacob's Cross.

That alone is worth the trip up to the top - to the stone slab, which, when viewed up close, lives up to its name and which the gondola passes quite close to. You can also use this E bike drive up here or hike on foot if you are in good shape.

It is cold above 1860 meters above sea level

The mountain station is one of the highest in the area. And I immediately become aware of a major mistake. I forgot my jacket in the car. Although it's around 25 degrees Celsius downstairs, it's at the top stone slab There is still some snow left in Waidring and temperatures are around freezing point while an ice-cold wind blows. Close your eyes and go through, I think. And so I froze for a whole day. The first lesson for you at this point: Pack yourself Summer Bring something warm to wear, even if it's 30 degrees down in the valley.

A highlight: the Triassic Park

That said, when we arrived at the top of the mountain we were amazed: the first thing we saw was a huge Stegosaurus. And in front of us stretches an impressive high plateau full of hiking trails, meadows, ascents and descents, cows, bikers, hikers - and of course lots of families who marvel at the Triassic Park.

Where the stone slab is today, there used to be an ancient sea called Tethys and dinosaurs, corals and ammonites have been found here. The Triassic Park – we have never seen anything like it up on a mountain. What an exciting and educational attraction.

Our experiences and experiences on the Steinplatte Waidring

The Steinplatte Waidring is one of our highlights on our holiday in Fieberbrunn in the PillerseeTal. After our arrival at the Steinplatte Waidring, we immediately went on a discovery tour. Since, as I said, it is a high plateau, the area is very clear and you can easily see where you can go.

Many paths around the gondola are also suitable for families with strollers because the roads are paved. We first orientate ourselves in the direction of the Triassic Park, which extends around the mountain station in Waidring. Life-sized dinosaurs look at you there. And of course you can find out on an information sign which animals they are and how they lived.

We come to the playground, where there are also water games - a Triassic Beach. This is not far from the stalactite cave, which you can go into and look around while watching the colorful lights.

Spectacular viewing platform on the Steinplatte

And the highlight follows immediately - a viewing platform on the stone slab that floats dozens of meters above the abyss. From here you have a spectacular view of the valley. You can see as far as Pillersee and even further to Jakobskreuz. What a fantastic view, but you should have a head for heights to see it. Because there are glass panels in the floor of the viewing platform.

Our first hike – up to the Steinplatte summit Bäreck

After the viewing platform we continue uphill. After visiting Triassic Park we go on our first hiking tour. During our vacation in Fieberbrunn in the PillerseeTal, we went on several hikes on the Steinplatte because the area is so beautiful for hiking.

On the first hike we went uphill from the mountain station to the water dinosaur, which is located in a reservoir above the gondola station. The dinosaur is huge and comes out of the lake at the push of a button. On the way to the dinosaur you also come to Berghaus Kammerkör stop by if you need some refreshment along the way.

To the right goes up to the summit - and to Stonehenge

From there we went uphill to the right along the mountainside. On this narrow path you come to the summit of the Steinplatte, the Belgian cross and another reservoir on the summit, where the Bäreck mountain station is located. The access to the Schustergangl and Zettensteig via ferratas also begins at the summit cross.

On the way to the summit, you can pay a visit to Stonehenge on the Slab - a small rock formation that is believed to have been erected by holidaymakers. Finally you reach the upper reservoir and the crosses at the summit. Up there you are at lofty heights and are rewarded with a wonderful view - even as far as Lake Chiemsee in Germany.

Our second hike

On our second hike we hiked a little way down the high plateau from the Steinplatte mountain station. You can hike down a paved road there and take a few cross-country shortcuts past cows. Your first stop is the small Hubertus Chapel a little below the mountain station. From here, hike a little further into the high valley. It's not particularly steep. This route is also covered by cyclists.

And theoretically you can also master it with a stroller. Depending on which direction you go, various stations await you on the way, such as the Stellenalm, the Alpengasthof Möseralm and the Bäreck inn. If you keep left, you will come to the Steinplatte parking lot. There is another beautiful storage pond at the Möseralm.

Is a trip to the Steinplatte Waidring worth it?

A trip to the Steinplatte Waidring is definitely worth it. As I said – we were up there several times and really enjoyed the hiking area. You have a wonderful panoramic view up there. And you come into pretty close contact with cows in the summer. Triassic Park is entertaining and educational – and truly a unique selling point for this hiking area.

You can really endure it here and enjoy your time on vacation. Next time we are in the region we will come back here. So I can say: The Steinplatte Waidring is very worthwhile for hikers, bikers, families and active vacationers who want to cover a few kilometers on vacation.

During our tours in the summer we have already seen that Steinplatte Weiding is an excellent place Ski Area acts. We really enjoyed it on the Steinplatte Waldring. So good that over the course of our two weeks in Pillerseetal in Fieberbrunn we even came here more often and tried out different hiking trails. The high plateau is ideal for Hiking, because the area is so well laid out and there are many different hiking trails in all directions. If you cover a few kilometers and climb to the summit, for example, you will have an incredibly beautiful panoramic view even as far as Lake Chiemsee.

The dinosaur park is simply ideal for younger guests. There are life-sized dinosaurs everywhere that amaze young and old alike.
