Vacation during Corona - a plea for trips to Germany

by

Boring, old-fashioned and not particularly popular: For a long time, holidays in Germany were considered a pastime for older people and were extremely interesting for young families with small children who did not feel like traveling by plane. The corona pandemic has drastically changed the view of vacation in one's own country. Even if many travel destinations in Europe and around the world are gradually reopening, this year offers the special opportunity to finally get to know Germany anew. Sascha Tegtmeyer from Just Wanderlust makes a plea for travel to Germany in this column.

The package tour was already booked. Family M. (real name known) had already in January Canaries-Travel booked in April and Mediterranean cruise in July. Then the corona virus came to Europe - first very slowly and slowly, then with full force. Initially, no traveler expected that his vacation could fall into the water this year due to the new virus Sars-Cov-2. I had a survey in February Instagram started, in which I asked if the users were concerned about their already booked vacation trips. The vast majority of users of well over 50 percent (62 to 38 percent) did not believe at the time that the summer vacation could fall into the water because of Corona. Unfortunately a fallacy.

Because in March 2020 at the latest, many trips and holidaymakers realized that their travel plans were due in the coming months Water could fall. Not even the German one Baltic Sea coast and the North Sea coast could be traveled during the peak phase of the pandemic in Germany - around Easter. The northern federal states of Schleswig-Holstein and Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania had closed the borders for tourists, and the islands in the North Sea and Baltic Sea were closed. The situation in southern Europe was even worse.

The popular MediterraneanDestinations such as Mallorca (Tips), Sardinia (travelogue), Malta (tips) or Cyprus (travel report) were completely blocked, there was a strict curfew for the population in Italy and Spain. Trips were canceled and holidaymakers who had booked very early could still be lucky that they booked Vacation Packages got their money back. The vacation 2020 does not seem to be under a good star.

Overview - Germany trips in Corona times

  • Germany is the ideal travel destination for everyone who wants to travel spontaneously in 2020 despite Corona
  • Destinations in your own country can be reached in a few hours by car or train
  • Germany has many beautiful areas that can easily compete with the established travel destinations on the Mediterranean and throughout Europe

Traveling in Corona times - What is the current starting point for travelling?

Basically, the starting point for traveling in 2020 is relatively complicated, confusing and will certainly develop very dynamically in the next few weeks and months. By dynamic is meant that the situation can change again quickly from here. Politics and business want safe escort for travelers in the Vacation manage - many holidaymakers, however, seem to be skeptical at first and are not yet rushing to the travel agency to make the next trip Mallorca - which should open again for vacationers from July - to book. At the moment there is a strong tendency to relax the corona restrictions, which makes it possible, for example, to be more mobile in a timely manner - to travel in Germany and other European countries and to go on vacation.

However, the easing is already noticeable in coronavirus infections, which are occurring again more frequently. At worst, a second wave of the dangerous virus threatens. This could lead to new restrictions, so that in extreme cases even booked trips have to be canceled. Lots Tour operators, Airlines and other providers such as Hotels and accommodations therefore currently offer relatively accommodating rebooking options - this situation has already been taken into account.

But what is left of the holiday joys when you look after your holiday instead of looking forward to it Holiday fear that there is no buffet in hotels and strict restrictions apply everywhere anyway? In my opinion, lightness and joie de vivre hardly find a place anymore. For travelers and vacationers, this is additional stress, since in principle you have to worry about your vacation until the end and in the case of rebookings, of course, there is an additional effort.

Employees in particular face problems here if they have taken their annual leave during the long summer vacation. In principle, however, it does not have to be a reason to stay at home. If you approach your 2020 holiday planning flexibly from the outset, you should have an unforgettable one this year too Vacation despite Corona spend - no matter whether on a trip to Germany or in other European countries, e.g. on Mediterranean or in Scandinavia.

Germany trips 2020 - many good arguments for a holiday in your own country

There are currently many good arguments in favor of spending your vacation either on the balcony or on a trip to Germany this year instead of with this year Airplane to gondola through world history. I admittedly didn't feel like it for a long time, Vacation in Germany (Destinations) to do - a vacation in my own country seemed somehow dusty, boring and the weather is often quite changeable. But I was wrong about it, because the more I looked at the topic, the more I noticed:

  • Holidays in Germany are generally cheaper than you think because the cost of living is relatively low compared to the countries in southern Europe
  • The tourist infrastructure in many regions has been greatly expanded and modernized in recent years
  • Many travel destinations offer premium accommodations, great wellness hotels, modern holiday apartments and renovated holiday homes
  • When traveling to Germany by car or train in 2020, holidaymakers can react flexibly to changes that may result from renewed outbreaks of coronavirus
  • the journey does not have to take place in an airplane - this not only has environmental benefits, potential virus hot spots such as airports are also avoided

Of course it also has one Travel in Germany not just benefits. If a lot of people are planning a trip to Germany in 2020 this summer, it should be full on the autobahns. Travelers in the car would be stuck in traffic for hours. Traveling by train should also be questionable: on the trains you should be able to keep a good distance from your fellow passengers. With the crowded trains we've come from the past Summer to know, that is of course not compatible.

The railway would therefore have to increase the quotas accordingly, which is unlikely in the current situation. All the more travelers would therefore fall back on the car and the traffic collapse on the highways, which are tormented by construction sites and heavy traffic, is likely to be imminent.

What are the advantages of a holiday abroad - for example in the Mediterranean?

A vacation abroad is of course also a conceivable option for the next few months. There has been a lot of discussion on Twitter over the past few days about whether a vacation in Germany is really a vacation. Many users there spoke against a trip in their own country. Since travel always has something to do with personal preferences: So what would be the alternative to vacationing in a local area?

A visit by car would be particularly conceivable in the states bordering Germany. With your own car, for example Italy, France, Austria, the Netherlands, Scandinavia, Poland and some other countries. Of course, these routes are a bit longer and you sometimes have two day trips ahead of you on routes that can be completed within one to three hours by plane.

I have to say as much as I do air travel normally love - I can't bring myself to love one under the current conditions flight to book. The airlines currently offer very accommodating conditions, especially for flights within Europe, and they never tire of emphasizing that traveling by plane is safe. However, I am certainly not the only one who currently has reservations about such gatherings of people.

However, if you are willing to take risks, you can of course still take a trip to the Mediterranean or the Canary Islands Tenerife (travelogue), Gran Canaria (travel report), Lanzarote (travel report) and Co. plan. In any case, there are more than enough possible travel destinations that will gradually open to tourists in the next weeks and months: These include the Spanish mainland, the Balearic Islands with Mallorca and Co, Sardinia, Sicily and the Italian mainland, France, Malta, Croatia, Greece and Cyprus. Also an opening of Turkey and Egypt (tips) is already under discussion.

So if you are a little more willing to take risks and want to be sure that you can also enjoy consistent summer weather this year, you can of course also book a package tour to the Mediterranean or to one of the other relatively close regions. A flight to the Emirates is also conceivable in principle, since the Gulf airlines will resume operations around July 01st, 2020. Currently, however, it seems that more Long-distance travel to America or Asia (Southeast Asia) are still rather difficult and you have to observe a lot of conditions. So I'm assuming that I won't be able to go on long-distance trips this year.
