My first Gran Canaria experience - a continent wrapped in an island

Gran Canaria is a paradise to be discovered. When I first came to the island I was struck by the enthusiasm of the locals. They raved about their island and told me that Gran Canaria is an entire continent in just a few square kilometers. The island has its own climate zones - the dry south with desert landscapes, the green and wetter north with lots of vegetation and the fertile mountainous interior. An island full of adventures waiting to be discovered.

After arriving from Germany I checked into the luxurious Cordial Mogan Playa a – an excellent four star hotel fully integrated into a botanical garden. The playful architecture of the hotel makes you feel as if you are in another world. The resort offers several bars, swimming pools and hot tubs, so it's easy to find the perfect place to chill and relax - or swim a few laps in the pool.

After a relaxing day at the pool or on the beach, you will be rewarded with an excellent dinner in the evening, which sometimes even gives the hotel five-star character. Then it's off to the bar, where there's a lot of hustle and bustle until late at night. Meanwhile, you can hear the rustling of the palm trees and the chirping of the birds in the botanical garden. There are also many animals living here, so you should be animal-friendly and respect the residents.

There is a lot to discover and experience on Gran Canaria. The island offers many activities and sights to suit all tastes. In the south of the island you will find many beautiful beaches that are perfect for sunbathing, swimming and surfing. In the north, on the other hand, the landscape is greener and there are many opportunities for hiking and mountain biking. In the interior of the island there are impressive landscapes that can be explored on foot or by car.

One of the most famous sights of Gran Canaria is the Roque Nublo, a prominent rock that juts out from the landscape. You can reach it on foot or by car and from the top you have a breathtaking view over the island. Another highlight is the Palmitos Park, a zoo and amusement park with exotic animals and plants from all over the world. A visit is definitely worthwhile.

I had heard a lot of negative things about the island - the criticism ranged from mass tourism to the island of pensioners. But on site it has been shown that it is very different - especially when you leave the holiday resort and take a closer look around. Gran Canaria is an adventure island. It is a true paradise for everyone who is looking for relaxation, adventure and nature in equal measure. Through sustainable tourism development, the island has preserved its uniqueness and offers its visitors an unforgettable experience. I can only recommend everyone to include Gran Canaria in their travel planning and to discover the island for themselves.

Wellness, beach vacation or active vacation?

Many types of travel can be combined on Gran Canaria

Puerto de Mogán is the ideal starting point for an active holiday on Gran Canaria. Divers in particular get their money's worth here, as Extra Divers Gran Canaria is located at Cordial Playa and many of the island's best dive sites can be reached quickly from the small marina in Mogán. The fishing village also has something special to offer passive divers - the bright yellow submarine, which invites you to go on underwater tours.

Jet ski fans will also get their money's worth in Mogán. The port is the starting point for exciting tours on the sea. Unfortunately there are no surfing or stand-up paddling spots in Mogán, but the place offers an oasis of peace and relaxation away from the hustle and bustle. The location, a bit away from the tourist centers of the island, makes Mogán a quiet and tranquil place that is not as crowded as other places on the island.

The promenade along the marina is lined with shops and restaurants and invites you to stroll. However, it looks a bit artificial because it was built exclusively for tourists. Nevertheless, it offers a beautiful view of the harbor and the sea. The walk to the beach is not far, so in the heat of the day you can just put on your swimming trunks and jump into the water. This is an absolute must, especially in the hot summer on Gran Canaria.

If you don't just want to relax at the beach or pool, a trip to the surrounding area is a good idea. For example, you can visit the Las Dunas de Maspalomas nature reserve. The dune landscape stretches over several kilometers and offers a unique sight. A trip to the mountains is also worthwhile. The village of Tejeda is a pretty mountain village known for its almond trees and quaint houses.

Puerto de Mogán is an idyllic place in Gran Canaria, ideal for those looking for a peaceful and relaxing holiday. The location of the place makes it an ideal starting point for all kinds of water sports activities, but also offers enough opportunities for rest and relaxation. The area has a lot to offer and there are many interesting destinations to discover. All in all, Puerto de Mogán is an excellent choice for a varied and relaxing holiday on Gran Canaria.

Gran Canaria's Sights, Beaches, Places & Hot Spots

Finally arrived in Gran Canaria and after a pleasant Travel rested, we set out to explore the island. After all, as newcomers to Gran Canaria, we want to know what awaits us here and what beauties the island has to offer. But before we go into the water for the first time, we want to get an overview of the landscape and culture.

There are numerous sights on Gran Canaria.

Since we chose Puerto de Mogán as the starting point for our exploration tour, we cannot ignore the city as a place of interest. But there is also a lot to discover on Gran Canaria outside of Mogán. The west of the island was declared a biosphere reserve by UNESCO - and not without reason. Because the volcanic landscape is impressive and has a lot to offer.

There are many small towns on the island that are worth a visit and where you can experience Canarian culture up close. But nature also has a lot to offer - from impressive mountain ranges and deep green valleys to endless beaches and crystal-clear water. We are excited to see what awaits us on our tour of discovery and look forward to discovering the diversity of Gran Canaria.

Puerto de Mogán

Puerto de Mogán is a picturesque fishing village on the west coast of Gran Canaria, ideal for escaping the hustle and bustle of the big tourist resorts and finding some rest and relaxation. The place is known for its maritime flair and its picturesque little marina surrounded by colorful houses. The alleys around the center and the port are decorated with pretty flowers and plants and create a cozy atmosphere. Here you can sit in one of the many cafes and restaurants right on the water and enjoy the view of the boats and the sea. The city also offers plenty of shopping opportunities, from souvenir shops to fashion boutiques to grocery stores.

In addition to the cozy atmosphere, Puerto de Mogán also has a small sandy beach that invites you to sunbathe and swim in the clear water. Here you can refresh yourself on hot days and enjoy the sun. Active holidaymakers can also try water sports such as jet skiing or diving in the nearby harbor. All in all, Puerto de Mogán is an ideal place to enjoy the Canarian way of life and to relax away from mass tourism. If you are looking for peace and tranquility, this is the place for you. If you are looking for a little more action, you will find numerous activities and sights in the surrounding villages.

Presa de las Ninas

The landscape of Gran Canaria is shaped by the island's volcanic past and offers some impressive sights. One of these highlights is the Presa de las Ninas reservoir, which lies on a plateau and can be reached via a scenic road. The road to the reservoir is a real treat for all drivers who like to be enchanted by a breathtaking view. However, you should be prepared for the fact that the road has many curves and is not suitable for every driver. But those who make it will be rewarded with a breathtaking view of the reservoir and the surrounding landscape.

The Presa de las Ninas is a popular destination for hikers who want to enjoy the beauty of the Canarian landscape. One can hike around the lake and admire the beautiful nature. Those who like it a little more challenging can also hike to the Sorria dam, which regulates and controls the lake. The dam is an impressive structure and offers spectacular views of the surrounding area.

For those who like it a little quieter, the Presa de las Ninas still offers a lot to discover. You can just sit and enjoy the view or have a picnic to soak up the fresh air and tranquility of the area. All in all, Presa de las Ninas is a real highlight on Gran Canaria and a must for anyone who wants to discover the beauty of Canarian nature. Whether hiking or just enjoying the view, this place is an unforgettable experience and should not be missed on any visit to the island.

Playa de la Aldea

Maspalomas beach is one of the most famous beaches in Gran Canaria and attracts countless tourists every year. The white sandy beach is about six kilometers long and offers enough space for sun worshipers who want to refresh themselves in the turquoise water. However, the beach is surrounded by tall hotel buildings, which has caused criticism from some guests. But if you go a little further south, you will find Meloneras Beach, a stretch of beach that is a bit quieter and less crowded.

The Meloneras Beach is located directly at the port of Meloneras and also offers a long sandy beach with crystal clear water. Holidaymakers will find peace here and can also enjoy the beautiful view of the Atlantic. The beach bars, where you can relax and sip cocktails, are particularly recommended.

The beach of Meloneras is also ideal for sports activities: water sports enthusiasts get their money's worth here and can try stand-up paddling or windsurfing, for example. Meloneras Beach is also perfect for a long walk on the beach.

Balcony Mirador

Only a few minutes away from the dream beach, Gran Canaria offers another opportunity to enjoy a breathtaking view. The Mirador de Balcon viewpoint is a place that takes your breath away. From here you have a fantastic view of the cliffs that drop majestically into the sea. The mighty Teide volcano on the neighboring island of Tenerife rises in the background. The contrast between the deep blue sea and the dramatic relief of the cliffs is simply spectacular and makes the Mirador de Balcon one of the most beautiful viewpoints on the island.

This place is an absolute highlight for photographers and offers numerous opportunities for impressive shots. A visit to the Mirador de Balcon should not be missed on any trip to Gran Canaria.

Port of the Snows

Puerto de las Nieves is a small, idyllic fishing village in the north of Gran Canaria and a real insider tip if you are looking for authentic Canarian flair and an original atmosphere. In contrast to the tourist strongholds in the east of the island, time seems to have stood still here. The white-blue house facades and the small, narrow streets give the place a picturesque flair.

The highlight of the place is undoubtedly the port, where colorful fishing boats and sailing yachts line up. Here you can watch the fishermen, who offer their fresh catch every day, at work and get into conversation with them. In the surrounding restaurants and bars you can smell the sea and enjoy the view of the deep blue water with delicious Canarian dishes and fresh fish.

Another highlight in Puerto de las Nieves is the natural rock formation "Dedo de Dios" (Fingers of God), which once towered over the sea but was destroyed by a storm in 2005. Still, the place is worth a visit to admire the stunning coastal scenery and relax in the harbour-side cafes. Those who like hiking can also explore the "Parque Natural de Tamadaba" from Puerto de las Nieves, which stretches along the rugged north coast of Gran Canaria and inspires with lush vegetation and breathtaking views. All in all, Puerto de las Nieves is a small paradise for everyone who loves the Canarian culture and the unspoiled nature of the island.

The Roque Nublo

The Roque Nublo on Gran Canaria is an absolute highlight and should not be missed when visiting the island. With a height of over 1.800 meters it is the second highest mountain on the island and offers a breathtaking view of the surroundings. The natural monument consists of volcanic rock and is a popular hiking destination due to its unique geological formation. But caution is advised: the path to Roque Nublo is demanding and requires a certain level of physical fitness.

Travel Report Gran Canaria Tips Experiences The Roque Nublo is also considered an important cultural and identity symbol of the Canary Islands and therefore has a special meaning for the islanders.

Tejeda

Tejeda, the small mountain village in the heart of Gran Canaria, is a paradise for nature lovers and hikers. Surrounded by the majestic mountains of the island, the place offers breathtaking views of the surrounding countryside. With its tranquil atmosphere and picturesque townscape, Tejeda is the ideal place to escape the hustle and bustle of the tourist hotspots and relax in a relaxed environment.

In addition to the impressive landscape, Tejeda also has a rich cultural history to offer. The town is known for its Canarian architecture and historic buildings, including the 20th-century Church of Nuestra Señora del Socorro. Another highlight is the Museo de Esculturas Abraham Cárdenes, which is dedicated to the artist of the same name and houses an extensive collection of his works .

For hikers, Tejeda offers numerous opportunities to explore nature and landscape. Among the most popular hiking routes are the Roque Bentayga and the Pico de las Nieves, both of which offer fantastic views over the island. Due to the altitude, however, it can get a bit cooler than on the coast, so you should take a warm jacket with you.

For foodies there are a number of restaurants in Tejeda serving traditional Canarian dishes. You should definitely try the Canarian national dish, papas arrugadas con mojo, a delicious combination of small potatoes with a spicy sauce. Don't forget the famous Tejeda almond biscuits, which you can taste in the local pastry shops.

All in all, Tejeda is a charming village that embodies the beauty and charm of Gran Canaria in a unique way. Whether you want to hike, explore the cultural sights or just enjoy the tranquility, Tejeda has something for everyone.

Saint Lucia

The mountain village of Santa Lucia is a truly picturesque place and an absolute must for anyone who wants to discover Gran Canaria away from the tourist hotspots. Impressive nature and a unique landscape await you here, characterized by the typical red rocks and valleys that blend harmoniously into the environment. A highlight is certainly the imposing church, which forms the center of the village. A look inside is definitely worth it: the magnificent decorations and the impressive architecture are a real feast for the eyes.

A walk through the dunes at sunset is an unforgettable experience and ideal for photographers who want to unleash their creativity.

When is the best time to go to Gran Canaria?

Arrival to Gran Canaria

Gran Canaria is one of the most popular travel destinations for Germans and is therefore easily accessible. You can also take the ferry from Barcelona to the Canary Islands.

The best travel time for Gran Canaria

The Canary Islands and thus also Gran Canaria are an absolute year-round destination for holidaymakers and travellers. With air temperatures around 20 degrees Celsius in winter and almost the same water temperatures, you can easily venture into the water in a wetsuit for diving, surfing or jet skiing.

The precipitation is also limited, although one or the other rain shower has to be expected. However, the experiences of locals confirm that it is by no means a pronounced rainy season with cloudbursts lasting for months.

The high season is July and August and means the island is hopelessly overbooked. If you want to avoid the crowds, you should book in one of the other ten months of the year or actually retire to a remote mountain village.

health care

The holiday on Gran Canaria is just around the corner and the anticipation is great. But before you start, you should think about your health care so that you can enjoy your holiday to the fullest. Travel Report Gran Canaria - Experiences with the versatile Canary Island

My detailed conclusion

For a long time, when I thought of the Canary Islands, I only thought of building blunders, mass tourism and overcrowded beaches. On my last visit to Gran Canaria, however, I was taught otherwise. The island has undergone an enormous change in recent years and today not only offers a lot to the classic package holiday maker, but also to guests with high demands. Gran Canaria is a paradise for everyone who loves the sea and likes to be active. Diving, surfing, stand-up paddling and jet skiing are just a few of the many options the island has to offer. But hikers and mountaineers also get their money's worth. The landscape is varied and offers both barren desert landscapes and green valleys and mountains. The possibilities for outdoor activities are almost unlimited.

But Gran Canaria also has a lot to offer for those who like it a little quieter. In high-quality five-star hotels and wellness resorts you can relax and unwind wonderfully. The Canarian cuisine is also worth a visit - it is known for its fresh ingredients and the use of local products.

What I particularly like is the increasing emphasis on the island's assets. Gran Canaria has understood that it is not about attracting as many tourists as possible, but about offering guests an experience that suits their needs and desires. There is more emphasis on quality than quantity, which is also reflected in the premium offerings. Overall, I am enthusiastic about Gran Canaria and the other Canary Islands. The island has everything you need for a perfect holiday - sun, sand, sea, adventure, good food and quality accommodation. I can only recommend everyone to visit Gran Canaria themselves and to convince themselves of the diversity of the island.
