As a seasoned traveler who has seen deserts, cliffs and stones all over the world, I am continually amazed by the beauty of Lanzarote. The island looks like you landed on Mars! When you get up Lanzarote When you arrive, you notice that the vegetation is sparse.

The only plants you see are those planted by the locals and watered regularly. The island is a true natural wonder with lots of lava rock, volcanic craters and very little vegetation. But despite the barren landscape, Lanzarote is warm all year round and is also a great travel destination in the winter months.

Lanzarote travel report - an island between hell, art and architecture

My experiences with the volcanic island

My first impression of Lanzarote seems to be confirmed immediately: it is barren and dry, hot as hell and overall somehow quiet on the island - obviously significantly fewer tourists than on, for example Tenerife and Gran Canaria. It may also be because I'm on the island in the low season - it's the end of September. And this is exactly where it gets interesting: Where are the castles and huge hotels that we know from the other Canary Islands?

They don't exist on Lanzarote. On the contrary: the architecture is totally appealing, I notice that straight away. No tall buildings and everything is painted so beautifully white. Well-maintained is the right word. Lanzarote seems very well maintained to me. And I find that very relaxing. My first experiences in Lanzarote are therefore very positive – and should remain so.

Because that changes my perspective: After landing on the island, I thought I had arrived in the desert, but I notice more and more that Lanzarote is pursuing a concept: more premium, more understatement and, above all, a large portion of culture and art, which the island owes to its patron, the world-famous artist Cesar Manrique. Because Lanzarote is an island that impresses at first glance with its barren volcanic landscape.

The heat and barrenness are reminiscent of the North African desert

The heat and dryness are reminiscent of a desert landscape, but upon closer inspection it quickly becomes clear that the island has much more to offer. There are no overcrowded beaches or castles that characterize the island. Instead, Lanzarote offers a calm and relaxed atmosphere characterized by unique architecture and cultural diversity.

The architecture in Lanzarote is characterized by a minimalist aesthetic that radiates calm and relaxation. The island is well maintained and the residents seem to care a lot about their environment and culture.

Leisure activities in Lanzarote

Is ten days enough to discover everything?

Lanzarote is an island with so many things to see and do that it makes you wonder if ten days is really enough to explore everything. Personally, I really enjoyed my vacation on Lanzarote and can recommend the island to anyone looking for a combination of beach, culture and adventure. When I arrived in Lanzarote I was lucky enough to stay at the Sandos Papagayo Resort in Playa Blanca.

The Hotels offers an all-inclusive package and is an excellent base for all activities on the island. The nearby Papagayo Beach is a dream, but the town of Playa Blanca is also worth a visit. There are many restaurants, shops and of course the beautiful beach in the middle of the city.

Travel report Lanzarote: After arriving at the Sandos Papagayo Hotel, we first relaxed in the pool.

Lanzarote also offers many outdoor activities. If you like water sports, you should definitely try diving, snorkeling and surfing. The island has some of the best diving in Europe, including the famous Atlantis wreck. Snorkelling is also a highlight in Lanzarote, especially in the crystal clear waters of Papagayo Bay. The best surfing spots are Costa Teguise or Famara Beach, both of which offer good wave and wind conditions.

But the cultural sights of Lanzarote are also worth a visit. Timanfaya National Park is a must for anyone who wants to experience the island's unique volcanic landscape. Another highlight is the Jameos del Agua - a natural cave with an auditorium, restaurant and a natural lake in which white blind crabs live. Anyone interested in art and architecture should visit the house and museum of the César Manrique Foundation.

Many works by the famous artist, who had a great influence on the design and architecture of Lanzarote, are exhibited here. Another highlight is the La Geria wine-growing region, known for its unique farming methods and award-winning wines. Here you can admire the vines planted among the black volcanic hills and taste some of the island's best wines.

In general, I recommend spending at least seven to ten days in Lanzarote to get to know all the sights and activities on the island. If you have enough time, you should also take a trip to the neighboring island of La Graciosa, which is known for its secluded beaches and untouched nature. Lanzarote is a true jewel in the Atlantic that has a lot to offer and is definitely worth a visit.

Sights in Lanzarote

If you are looking for a varied holiday in the Atlantic, Lanzarote is the place for you. The island has so much to offer that one wonders where to start. One way to see the main attractions is to rent a car and explore the island on your own. Most places are relatively quick and easy to get to, giving you plenty of time to see everything.

One of the most striking features of Lanzarote is the influence of the famous artist Cesar Manrique. His art and architecture can be found all over the island and have helped make Lanzarote one of the most beautiful islands in the Atlantic today. The island government has also done a lot to promote moderate tourism and to create an adapted architecture that fits perfectly into the landscape.

Of course there is much more to discover in Lanzarote, such as the Papagayo beaches or the Cueva de los Verdes, a natural cave that has been converted into a concert hall. In my travel report I have put together the most important sights in Lanzarote for you so that you can enjoy your holiday to the fullest.

1. The Papagayo Beaches (Playas del Papagayo)

If you are planning a beach day in Lanzarote, you should definitely visit the Papagayo beaches. These beautiful beaches are just a short drive from Playa Blanca and are some of the best beaches on the island. There are a total of seven bays with sandy beaches and turquoise waters, all surrounded by rocky cliffs and vegetation. The beaches are busy, but there is enough space for everyone.

What's special about Papagayo beaches is that they are relatively untouched and natural. There are no castles or hotels nearby that would disturb the view of the sea. The water is crystal clear and is ideal for swimming, snorkeling and diving. The beaches are also ideal for spending a day with the family as the water is shallow and calm.

If you want to experience the beach a little more intimately, you should go swimming at dusk. Then it is often quieter on the beach and with a bit of luck you have the bays almost to yourself. The sunset view is stunning and provides a beautiful backdrop for a romantic beachside dinner. There is also a bar and restaurant on the beach where you can get food and drinks. However, if you are planning a picnic or BBQ, be sure to bring your own supplies as there is no shopping nearby. It is also advisable to take sunscreen, a sun hat and water with you as Lanzarote can get very hot.

2. Timanfaya National Park

Another highlight on Lanzarote is the 51 square kilometer Timanfaya National Park. The national park is home to the Montañas del Fuego (Fire Mountains) and offers a unique lunar landscape. Here you really have the feeling of being in another world. The Fire Mountains in Timanfaya National Park are the result of several volcanic eruptions in Lanzarote in the 18th century, which greatly altered the landscape and created the formations we see today. The lava fields that formed during the eruptions have now solidified and form a bizarre landscape that must be seen.

Visitors to Timanfaya National Park can explore the park in a variety of ways. One of the most popular options is a bus tour that starts at the visitor center and travels through the Fire Mountains. During the tour you will get interesting information about the geology and history of the park. There is also the option to explore the park on foot, either on your own or with a guide. Another highlight in the Timanfaya National Park is the El Diablo restaurant. Here the food is prepared on special grills powered by heat from the geothermal energy source in the park's ground. A unique experience not to be missed.

3. Cuevas de los Verdes

The Cuevas de los Verdes, also called Green Caves, are a unique lava cave system in the northeast of Lanzarote. The caves were formed by the eruption of the Monte Corona volcano about 4.000 years ago. The cave system stretches for about 6 kilometers and consists of a series of caves and passages, some of which even lead under the sea. The caves are a fascinating natural phenomenon and offer the visitor the opportunity to discover a unique and mystical world.

When you visit the Los Verdes Caves, you can not only admire the breathtaking landscape, but also learn more about the history and geology of the caves. Over the centuries, the caves have played an important role, particularly as a hiding place from pirate attacks and as a refuge during volcanic eruptions.

Today the Cuevas de los Verdes are a popular tourist attraction in Lanzarote. Guided tours are offered where you are led through the caves in groups. During the tour you will learn more about the history of the caves and the island. It is also possible to take an individual tour where you can explore the caves on your own.

Near the caves is one of the largest lava tubes in the world, the Jameos del Agua. Here you can experience a unique underwater world and visit an extraordinary restaurant. All in all, the Cuevas de los Verdes are a must-see for anyone interested in natural phenomena and Lanzarote's history.

4. Jameos del Agua

The Jameos del Agua are another work of art by Cesar Manrique on Lanzarote and a real highlight of the island. The name refers to part of a lava tube created by a volcanic eruption near the town of Haría in the north of the island. Cesar Manrique transformed this lava cave into a unique attraction. The cave is divided into different areas, including a restaurant, a concert hall and a saltwater lake that is home to thousands of tiny crabs. The lake is surrounded by a breathtaking landscape of palm trees, which provides an idyllic backdrop for a relaxing stroll.

A highlight of Jameos del Agua is the spectacular pool designed by Cesar Manrique. It is located right next to the saltwater lake and offers a unique view of the fascinating lava cave. Surrounded by palm trees and tropical plants, the pool exudes incredible tranquility.

Jameos del Agua regularly hosts concerts and other cultural events. The concert hall is known for its excellent acoustics and can accommodate up to 600 people. There are various hiking trails and viewpoints in the area from which you can enjoy breathtaking views of the surrounding area.

5. Fundacion Manrique

The Fundacion Cesar Manrique is another architectural masterpiece in Lanzarote and a must-see for any art lover. The house is set in the middle of a lava field and was designed and designed by Cesar Manrique. The building is mostly underground and blends in perfectly with the surrounding landscape.

The house has several rooms where works by Spanish artists are exhibited. The gallery offers an impressive collection of paintings, sculptures and other works of art. The spaces are inspired by the natural environment and offer each visitor a unique experience. Another highlight of the Fundacion Cesar Manrique is the garden. The garden is lined with plants and sculptures and offers stunning views of the surrounding countryside. It is a place of rest and relaxation where one can enjoy the beauty of nature.

A visit to the Fundacion Cesar Manrique is an unforgettable experience and offers a unique insight into the artist's work. Cesar Manrique not only designed the house and garden, but also the surrounding landscape. He worked to ensure that Lanzarote remained a place of low-impact tourism and helped preserve the island's unique nature and culture.

6. Rio Viewpoint

The Mirador del Rio is an absolute must for every Lanzarote visitor. The viewpoint is at an altitude of 475 meters and offers a breathtaking view of the neighboring island of La Graciosa. Here the visitor is offered a unique view of the landscape, which makes even hardened travelers go into raptures. The Mirador del Rio is also architecturally impressive as it was designed by Cesar Manrique and blends in perfectly with the landscape.

The striking building is reminiscent of a fortress and was built into the rock. Due to its location high up on the mountain, it's often windy, but it's worth it as the views are simply incomparable. Inside the lookout there is also a restaurant that offers culinary delights and an unforgettable view of the landscape. The Mirador del Rio is a must-see in Lanzarote.

7. La Graciosa

The small island of La Graciosa lies off the north coast of Lanzarote and can only be reached by boat. But the short crossing is worth it: Here you will still find untouched nature and a relaxed atmosphere that invites you to switch off and relax. There are no paved roads, only sandy paths and bicycles or SUVs as a means of transport. The beaches are white and lonely and invite you to swim and sunbathe.

But hikes through the rocky mountains or along the coast are also worthwhile. Particularly impressive is the viewpoint "Mirador del Rio", from which you have a fantastic view over the small island. So if you're feeling a bit adventurous and want to get away from it all, you should plan a trip to La Graciosa.

8. The La Geria wine region

In the midst of the seemingly inhospitable volcanic landscape of Lanzarote lies a surprise: the wine-growing region of La Geria. Here, art and subtle agriculture combine to create a unique overall experience. Dry field cultivation has been practiced here since the 18th century in order to make the barren soil more fertile. The vines are grown in small stone hollows and protected from the wind by low stone walls.

The result is a unique landscape with countless black, round craters scattered across the country like lunar landscapes. In the 1960s, the Museum of Modern Art in New York declared the entire wine-growing region and the imposing landscape to be a total work of art.

A visit to the region's wineries and vineyards is definitely worthwhile to taste the region's delicious and unique wine.

9. Garden of Cactus

Another exciting sight is the Jardin de Cactus, which lies in the east of the island between green fields of cactus and a black volcanic landscape. This varied cactus garden was designed by the famous artist Cesar Manrique, who has created a sophisticated interplay of different cactus species from five continents.

The garden is located in a former volcanic ash pit and houses around 4.500 specimens of around 500 different species of cacti. The Jardin de Cactus is an impressive example of the harmonious integration of art and nature. If you are in Lanzarote, you should not miss this unique place. It is open daily from 10.00 a.m. to 17.45 p.m. and admission costs 6 euros. There is also a cafeteria and gift shop.

10. Valley of 1000 Palms - Haria

In the north of the island lies the enchanting valley of 1000 palm trees, also called Haria. Legend has it that every time a girl was born in this village, a palm tree was planted. And so today the village shines in the midst of countless palm trees, which form a wonderful backdrop for a walk through the valley. But Haria has more to offer than palm trees.

The neoclassical style of the buildings surrounding the 19th-century Plaza de la Constitución makes the place a real feast for the eyes. The long, shady Plaza León y Castillo with its majestic fig and eucalyptus trees is also worth seeing and invites you to linger. A visit to Haria is an absolute must for any Lanzarote traveler looking to experience the island's beauty and culture.

11. Casa-Museo del Campesino

The Casa-Museo del Campesino is not just a museum, but an experience for all the senses. The building, designed by Cesar Manrique, is set amidst Lanzarote's stunning countryside and is an essential place to understand the island's culture and traditions. In the museum there are many exhibits that illustrate the life and work of the farmers in Lanzarote. For example, visitors can see tools and equipment for growing wine and other agricultural products.

However, the highlight of the Casa-Museo del Campesino is the restaurant, where traditional Canarian dishes are served. Here you can not only enjoy the delicious food, but also admire the architecture. The restaurant's courtyard is adorned with colorful mosaics and offers stunning views of the countryside. The fertility monument Monumento a la Fecundidad is another attraction on the museum grounds. Designed by Cesar Manrique, it symbolizes the island's growth and fertility. The monument consists of a collection of clay jars that hang like drops from the building's ceiling.

The Casa-Museo del Campesino is a must-see for any visitor wanting to better understand the culture and history of Lanzarote. Here you can not only learn about the agricultural work on the island, but also admire the impressive architecture by Cesar Manrique and taste traditional Canarian dishes.

The beach is known for its high waves and is often visited by surfers from all over the world. Access to the beach can be a little difficult as it is a bumpy gravel road, but once there you will be amazed by the beauty of the area. The long, pristine beach and stunning scenery beyond provide the perfect backdrop for an unforgettable surf trip.

4. Volcano hikes

The volcanic landscape of Lanzarote is unique and ideal for hiking. Hiking in the Timanfaya National Park, where you can marvel at the impressive Fire Mountains, is particularly popular. We also recommend hikes through the wine-growing region of La Geria or through the valley of the 1000 palms.

5. Boat trips

Numerous boat trips are offered from Lanzarote. For example, you can drive to the neighboring island of La Graciosa or sail along the coast of Lanzarote and discover the impressive cliffs and bays. Dolphin and whale watching tours are also offered.

Whether you want to get a diving license or just snorkel, you'll find everything you need in Lanzarote. In this article we have put together some of the best diving spots in Lanzarote so that you can enjoy your diving holiday to the fullest. Below you will find some tips for your diving holiday in Lanzarote.

Dive sites in Lanzarote

My recommendations

Diving on Lanzarote is a real highlight for all fans of underwater sports. The Canary Islands are known for their spectacular diving spots, which are spread across the entire island. The underwater world is so diverse that there is always something new to discover - from schools of fish to wrecks to rock formations.

A very special highlight is the Museo Atlántico near Playa Blanca, the first underwater museum in Europe, which takes its visitors into an impressive underwater world. I have selected three of the best diving spots on Lanzarote for you, which I have dived myself and which I would like to introduce to you.

1. Las Coloradas

There are so many fish to see at the Las Coloradas dive site in the south of Lanzarote that it feels like you are in a giant aquarium. This shallow and beginner-friendly dive site is a real highlight and should not be missed on any diving holiday in Lanzarote. There are many small rock formations and sandy areas to explore, populated by large groupers, whiptail rays, moray eels, lizard fish and parrot fish.

Schools of red mullet pass in huge groups and sometimes the visibility is so good that you can't put your hand in front of your face when you're surrounded by a whole shoal. A breathtaking experience not to be missed as a diver.

2. Puerto del Carmen

The small town of Puerto del Carmen on the east coast of Lanzarote is a true paradise for divers. Already on the beach promenade of Playa Chica it is clear that everything here revolves around underwater sports. Divers of all kinds flock here, crowding the entrance to explore the fascinating underwater world. But don't worry, the reef is miles long and so big that it's easy to get lost despite the crowds of divers.

The reef offers many attractions, such as the crab cave, where groupers hunt for small crustaceans, the cathedral or even a mini seahorse. Divers can enjoy the unique underwater world undisturbed.

3. Puddle of the Stick

Charco del Palo is a dive site in the northeast of Lanzarote, which is still an insider tip for many divers. Those who come here, however, should be able to survive a gauntlet of German nudists in town. Underwater you will be rewarded with a remote and untouched paradise full of fish.

Charco del Palo: Anyone who has survived the gauntlet through the village full of German nudists will find a secluded, untouched paradise with lots of fish underwater.

The dive sites at Charco del Palo are also very rich in fish and, due to the somewhat stronger current, also offer the chance of big fish such as stingrays or tuna. It is a beautiful spot that is only visited by a few divers and therefore always offers a special experience.

General information about Lanzarote

With an age of over 15 million years, Lanzarote is one of the oldest islands in the Canary Archipelago. Throughout its history, the island has experienced more than 2.141 volcanic eruptions, which have shaped the island's image. Timanfaya National Park is an impressive example of the island's volcanic activity and a must-see for every visitor.

With La Graciosa, the southeasternmost of the Canary Islands

One of Lanzarote's many special features is its location right next to the small island of La Graciosa, which is considered the eighth Canary Island and is a wonderful place to visit during a holiday in Lanzarote. The island itself has an area of 845,94 km² and measures about 58 kilometers from north to south and 34 kilometers in the greatest east-west extension. With a coastline of 213 kilometers, Lanzarote offers 10 kilometers of sandy beaches and 16,5 kilometers of pebbly and rocky beaches. The island also has two mountain ranges: the Famara massif to the north and Los Ajaches to the south.

Lanzarote has a mild climate all year round with little rainfall as the island is in the trade wind zone which brings fresh winds from the north to north-east. The average air temperature is 20,5 °C, with the two most extreme months being January with an average of 16,9 °C and August with an average of 24,7 °C. The water temperature varies between 17°C in winter and 22°C in summer.

Lanzarote was the first island to be declared a Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO in 1993, underscoring the importance and uniqueness of the island.

Where is Lanzarote?

Lanzarote is a stunning island that is not only special geographically. It is one of the Canary Islands and is around 1.000 kilometers southwest of the Iberian Peninsula. Due to its exposed location, it is characterized by two different climate zones and is therefore a paradise for sun worshipers and outdoor fans. With an area of 845 square kilometers, it is the fourth largest island in the Canary archipelago, but relatively sparsely populated. Only around 135.000 people live on Lanzarote, with the population spread across several towns and villages. To the north of the island are the Chinijo Islands, which include La Graciosa, Alegranza, Montaña Clara, Roque del Este and Roque del Oeste. Lanzarote itself is only about 140 kilometers from the African coast, which is why the island is often referred to as the bridge between Europe and Africa.

Who is Lanzarote suitable for?

Lanzarote is an island that appeals to many different interests and audiences. Those who love sun and sand can discover many beautiful beaches and bays on Lanzarote, ranging from quiet and lonely to lively and busy. Divers and surfers also get their money's worth, because the island is surrounded by crystal clear water and offers numerous opportunities to explore the underwater world or the waves. Sports enthusiasts will get their money's worth with cycling, hiking or jogging.

Art lovers will also get their money's worth on Lanzarote, as the island was the home of the famous artist César Manrique, whose influence can still be felt on the island today. Another reason to visit Lanzarote is the Canarian cuisine. Here you can get to know and enjoy the typical dishes of the island and the Canary Islands. Families with children will find Lanzarote an ideal holiday destination as there are many child-friendly hotels, beaches and activities. The island also offers good infrastructure and a pleasant working atmosphere for digital nomads who work from anywhere. Lanzarote Alternatives – Where is it most worthwhile?

If you are looking for alternatives to Lanzarote, there are a few options that you can consider. But don't forget that Lanzarote is a unique island with its own charm and flair that you should definitely visit if you have the chance. If you have already visited Lanzarote or are looking for new travel destinations, you should also check out the neighboring islands of Tenerife and Gran Canaria. Both islands are larger than Lanzarote and therefore offer even more opportunities for leisure activities. On Tenerife, for example, there is the Teide National Park with the highest mountain in Spain and Gran Canaria is known for its dune landscapes and beaches.

Those looking for a cheaper destination should consider Madeira as an alternative. The island in the Atlantic is known for its lush vegetation and mild climate. It also offers some activities like hiking and canyoning. If you prefer a Mediterranean destination, there are also some alternatives. Sardinia, for example, offers breathtaking beaches and a fascinating history, while Mallorca impresses with its beautiful bays and the Tramuntana mountains. Whichever alternative you choose, it always pays to compare the different options to find the best travel destination for you.
