Jacob's Cross on the Buchensteinwand – my tips & experiences

by

You can see the Jacob's Cross on the Buchensteinwand from many kilometers away. The largest summit cross in the world is an impressive sight. We started in St. Jakob in Haus and looked at the hiking area. What is there to discover? Is it worth? In my experience report with tips and recommendations, I have put together the most important information about the Jacob's Cross on the Buchensteinwand.

A chairlift awaits me in St. Jakob in Haus. My enthusiasm knows no bounds. I say: I'm not going in there. Look how high it goes. You hang open and free in the air, your feet practically dangling over the abyss. As we know, I'm not entirely free from giddiness. And three minutes later I'm sitting in the open chairlift that takes us to the Buchensteinwand. Our vacation in Fieberbrunn in the PillerseeTal is just pure action and thrill.

The view is breathtaking. And you have the feeling of floating in the air as you first go over a flat plain and then up a steep slope. And as you sit there and drive, this huge thing comes along Gipfelkreuz getting closer. What a sight from far away. It's quite a nice trip, I think.

First, have a drink with foresight

When we get to the top we first have a small drink Restaurant Das Weitblick. The name really says it all. From there you have a fantastic view in all directions. Generally from the Buchensteinwand, because the mountain is basically in the middle of the PillerseeTal.

So you can go from up here to Pillersee, to Fieberbrunn, Hochfilzen, St. Ulrich and even to Waidring stone slab look. In the distance you can even see the Wilder Kaiser and the Kitzbühler Horn. What a panoramic view from up here, which becomes even more beautiful and unobstructed when you stand at the top of the Jakobskreuz.

An incredibly beautiful view from the Jakobskreuz

And so let's first take a close look at this impressive, huge summit cross. It really doesn't have much in common with a normal summit cross - more like a multi-story building. We go in. With the PillerseeTal Card Entry is free and we decide to take the stairs instead of the elevator.

And we begin to be amazed when we stand in front of the panoramic glass panes in the crossbars of the cross. You seem to be floating and standing in the clouds. The view extends in all directions. You can see as far as Leogang on one side and as far as Lofer on the other side. What a distant view.

Which gets even stronger when you go to the top. Basically on the roof of the cross at 29,6 meters - and over 1450 meters above sea level. There you really feel like you're standing in the clouds as you let your gaze wander into the distance. That's incredible. And even suitable for people with a fear of heights. The solid construction of the cross makes you feel safe in the building - completely different than in a rocking chairlift.

Exhibitions take place in the building, which you shouldn't miss despite all the breathtaking views.

Our hiking tours at the Jakobskreuz on the Buchensteinwand

After the spectacular visit to the Jakobskreuz we continue - we go to the small summit cross, which certainly has its advantages. From there you have a wonderful view of the Buchensteinwand and as far as Fieberbrunn. In the distance you can even see the Wildseeloder, towering high above Fieberbrunn.

Magnificent panoramic views await you at the Jakobskreuz. Photo: Sascha Tegtmeyer

The small summit cross also has its advantages. From there we go on the Blumenleerpfad, which starts next to the Jakobskreuz and is a beautiful, idyllic nature path that starts at the Jakobskreuz.

Many paths lead to the Buchensteinwand to the Jakobskreuz

It has to be said at this point that we were at the Jacob's Cross on the Buchensteinwand several times during our vacation in Fieberbrunn. And accordingly tried out several hiking trails. The Buchensteinwand and the entire mountain are virtually in the middle of the PillerseeTal. And accordingly you can go up from different directions. On our first tour we went down from the mountain station to St. Jakob in Haus.

This is an easy hiking trail that runs over green slopes, partly through coniferous forest and is often lined with cows in summer. This is also the route that mountain bikers ride up. It was a beautiful path that ultimately leads through green meadows and ends at the valley station of the mountain railway.

Up the mountain on an e-bike?

On another day we came from Fieberbrunn on the e-bike and practically rode our bikes from Fieberbrunn along the lower mountain slope of the Buchensteinwand for a while before we got to the valley station of the chair lift. I confess, I enjoyed the chairlift rides. And so we left the bikes in the valley and took the lift up and then hiked back down.

Later we saw that it was also possible to get to the mountain slope of the Buchensteinwand from the direction of St. Ulrich am Pillersee and Hochfilzen. Many paths lead here to the Buchensteinwand and to the Jakobskreuz. And that's what makes this hiking area so versatile: you can try out these paths without any difficulty and find the most beautiful one for you.

Who is a visit to the Jakobskreuz suitable for?

If you like easy hiking tours and impressive panoramic views, a visit to the Jakobskreuz is just right for you. If you're like me and don't have a head for heights, you'll first have to take the chair lift behind you. You can also hike the Jakobskreuz entirely on foot. The tour is just right for active vacationers and outdoor fans.

You can stop off at the top of the cross and have a good time. The mountain is also ideal for mountain bikers and e-bikers because, although it is high, it is not quite as steep and challenging as some of the other climbs in the area. In winter the mountain is ideal for skiers who want to ski down the mountain slopes.

Is a visit to the Jakobskreuz on the Buchensteinwand worth it?

It's definitely worth a visit Jacob's Cross on the beech stone wall. You can stay there for a while, enjoy the views and stop off. Then you discover the hiking trails in the area.

The mountain with the Buchensteinwand and the Jakobskreuz is smaller compared to the surrounding ones, less steep and well suited for beginners. We were at the top of the Buchensteinwand several times. That's why I can say: Yes, it's definitely worth going up there at least once.

Jacob's Cross on the Buchensteinwand - a must in the PillerseeTal

The Buchensteinwand is one of the three peaks in the PillerseeTal - alongside the local mountain in Fieberbrunn and the Steinplatte Waidring. All three really impressed us - and it's really remarkable how different the three are. Three mountain peaks that are a few kilometers apart and couldn't be more different. Everyone has something for themselves - and so does the beech stone wall with the Jacob's cross. Even as a beginner – like us – you can easily explore and discover this mountain. So we were here several times and hiked the Buchensteinwand from several directions.

To mention it again: With the PillerseeTal Card  (not to be confused with the guest card, that's another card) our entrance to the Jakobskreuz and the ride on the chairlift were free. This meant we could plan our tours without having to worry about the costs. My conclusion is therefore clear: If you are on holiday in Fieberbrunn and the PillerseeTal, a visit to the Jakobskreuz on the Buchensteinwand is a must.
