A boat tour in the Maldives is always possible - either for diving, for dolphin watching or on the way to uninhabited islands - there is just so much to discover.

Diving in Baa Atoll - Coco Palm Dhuni Kolhu as a starting point

The bad news first: global warming and the warmer waters of the Indian Ocean have taken a toll on the corals in Baa Atoll. As everywhere in the Maldives and on many tropical reefs, many reefs in Baa Atoll are affected by severe coral bleaching. Of course, this is bad to see, but it shouldn't stop you from diving. The wildlife in Baa Atoll is incredibly diverse. HedgeYou can still find rays, turtles and schools of fish everywhere today.

And diving in the Baa Atoll has another advantage: You can visit the thilas here. These are submerged islands with many overhangs that offer you exciting perspectives and can also be partially immersed. The most beautiful thilas and coral reefs are to be found in the east and southeast of the Baa Atoll.

Horubadhoo Thila - exciting coral reef with many sea creatures

The east of the Baa Atoll should be high on your to-dive list - although of course the local dive center on Coco Palm Dhuni Kolhu knows the best spots and many insider tips. The protected reef in the east of Baa Atoll is the Horubadhoo Thila. There divers will find an incredibly varied mixture of large fish, schools of fusiliers (Caesioninae) and many macro creatures as well as of course hard and soft corals. The comparatively low water depth of less than 20 meters that you will find here is pleasant.

Nelivaru Haa: cleaning station for manta rays

Fittingly, the island of Dhuni Kolhu is located directly in the southeast of the Baa Atoll, where some of the most beautiful diving spots in the region are located. This includes, for example, Nelivaru Haa - an exciting and at the same time beautiful reef. As a highlight you will find star-shaped canyons in the reef, which is characterized by walls and overhangs, on which there are many hard and soft corals. And now comes the best: In the manta season from May to November, the manta rays use the reef as a cleaning station. During this time, spectacular dives are possible in Nelivaru Haa.

Snorkeling and diving on Coco Palm Dhuni Kolhu: many marine animals right on the house reef

Of course, you can also just grab some snorkeling equipment and jump into the water in the lagoon. There you will probably find smaller fish, turtles and maybe even one or two small ones Any can encounter. Overall, the house reef is in very good condition and there are really many marine animals to discover.

Discover many marine animals while diving in the Baa Atoll

When diving in Maldives holidays - and in this special case when diving in Baa Atoll and on Coco Palm Dhuni Kolhu - divers can discover an incredible number of marine animals. These are, of course, the typical suspects, who are found in large numbers all over the Indian Ocean.

The Dive Center – Dive Ocean Maldives Dhuni Kolhu (Dhuni Kolhu Diving Center)

The top-equipped diving center from DiveOcean Maldives on Coco Palm Dhuni Kolhu (Dhuni Kolhu Diving Center), which opened in 2008, is perfectly integrated near the main building of the resort diagonally opposite the spa area. The small team is very friendly and helpful, so you feel like you're in good hands right from the start.

Since I visited, the base management has changed - the base is now managed by Nausicaa from Italy and Mario from Germany. Divemaster Asif and Compressor Boy Delowar are still part of the staff today.

Diving on Dhuni Kolhu is informal: If you want to get in the water, simply add your name to the list the day before. There are dhoni trips every day. The tours are suitable for beginners, advanced and professional divers as there are dive sites of all levels of difficulty.

If you have special requirements for your diving equipment, Dive Ocean Dhuni Kolhu also has a well-stocked workbench.

The dive center goes 35 different diving spots many of which are controlled exclusively from this base. Besides the above, one of the most famous dive sites is Hani Faru. There, during the rainy season, manta rays and whale sharks can be observed together. A highlight of the dive center is that manta rays can be observed all year round in this area.

Diving in Baa Atoll – Coco Palm Dhuni Kolhu as a starting point?

My conclusion

The Baa Atoll with its numerous islands such as Coco Palm Dhuni Kolhu is a beautiful one Destination and definitely belongs to one of the most beautiful places in the world. The island is certainly not only suitable for divers, but also for wellness fans and beach holidaymakers. But if you make the long way to the Maldives, you can't really avoid diving and snorkeling - that's just part of the incredibly breathtaking underwater world. Either you are already a diver and you know what I mean anyway.

Or you should get a diving license before your trip so that you don't have to take a course on vacation. Otherwise you can of course also go snorkeling. But it will not work without contact with the underwater world - because diving in Baa Atoll and diving on Coco Palm Dhuni Kolhu is absolutely unique. After your trip you will know what I am talking about.
