Nature has created a true designer piece from the volcanic island of Lanzarote, which not only inspires above water. Sascha Tegtmeyer visited the three diving centers Rubicón Diving, Island Watersports and Aquatis Diving on the Canary Island. A report on an underrated island.

The sun burns, and you have to look for shade first, because hot as hell, light and especially sparse is the scenery on Lanzarote, The landscape looks unreal: bizarre mountain formations and craters rise up, if you look over the island, Facets of brown and red tones characterize the landscape. Did we land on Mars? We would not be surprised if the "Mars Rover" would roll by. The panorama is bleak and rugged, but also fascinating.

First stop: Playa Blanca and Rubicón Diving

In the heat, I want to get into the water immediately. Hardly arrived in Playa Blanca We check in at Marina Rubicón Diving Center, The base is located in the small, tranquil Marina with lighthouses and cafes near the city center. Rubicón is one of the most important tech bases in Spain and accordingly well equipped with plenty of space, Nitrox generator and two Zodiacs on the doorstep.

We sprint with the speedboat over the smooth sea to our first spot with the somewhat cheesy name Flamingo. "This spot is considered one the most fish-rich dive sites of the Canaries"Explains base manager Christopher Massaad. Roll back into the water and off you go: At the bottom, I can not see my hand in my eyes - we are surrounded by fish, fish and more fish! Incredible - our tour is accompanied by a barely 100-headed barracuda school lurking for prey. At the Las Coloradas spot we study the many small caves of a jetty with many reef blocks. Under a ledge sit three stingrays and two colorful groupers, which come in our wild presence in wild turmoil. What an exciting first day, I think, as the sun goes down glowing red behind the peaks of the volcanoes.

Diving on Lanzarote with Rubicon Diving: The most beautiful dive sites in the south of the Canary Islands

For the second day instructor Chris has considered a delicacy: "We drive to the Lighthouse," says the native Frankfurter. The dive has it all and is not for the gentle mind! Descent in open water into deep blue up to 40 meters. "Go with the flow," I think and let myself sink into the depths. After over 20 meters of free fall you can see the reef shimmer, and when we reach the wall, I'm relieved. The rest of the dive is incredibly relaxed. We start from 40 meters slowly along the reef. A lot of small fish can be found here. And in a cave lives a single Zacki, which is as big as the usual three of its kind!

Siesta after the dives: Top Hotel Sandos Papagayo Beach Resort

After the dives Siesta is announced, to rest for the evening. The Sandos Papagayo Beach Resort just outside Playa Blanca is an optimal retreat for it. The hotel is quiet but not secluded. It is suitable for families as well as for couples and singles. The large, air-conditioned room with sea view and balcony, as well as the extensive pool and garden landscape, relax and reflect on the exciting diving tours. The famous Papagayo beaches are just a stone's throw away and invite you to enjoy the orange-red sunset. Then you can Drink a delicious cocktail at the hotel bar or plunge directly into the nightlife of Playa Blanca.

On Lanzarote on a diving vacation: At the Playa Chica in the Cathedral of the Grouper

After the grandiose first days in the south in the channel between Lanzarote and Fuerteventura that is now Canary Diver mecca Puerto del Carmen on the program. Basic owner Georg Reichelmann welcomes me here at the marina at Iceland Watersports, his "home". Not far from the base is the much-visited hotspot par excellence: every morning there is something like a diver's festival at the Playa Chica: Spaniards, French, Germans and all sorts of other Europeans are assembling their devices in order to cross a narrow staircase or to pour a narrow stretch of beach into the water and to go on the kilometer-long reef diving.

The tour leads us left shoulder over the sand field to the reef roof, from where we descend along the steep wall. The dives in Puerto del Carmen are characterized mainly by lots of fish, lava formations and many smaller caves, each of which holds one or the other surprise. The first dive with George takes me to the cathedral, a huge cave that is probably one of the most popular spots in the Canary Islands. On the second tour I start with Georg's partner Gertraud to the Cueva de las Gambas, the cave of the dance shrimp. We glide deep into the cave, followed by a few curious groupers, and turn on the lights far in the grotto. The walls in the rock are full of terrific dance shrimp! And once the light is on, the Zackis hunt for the small crustaceans.

In the Village of the Nudists: With Aquatis Diving in Charco del Palo

The next day we drive to the northeast: I drive with Georg von Grundherr from the Aquatis Dive Center in Costa Teguise to the village of Charco del Palo. The village is located on a rocky stretch of coast and has a slippery secret: all residents and visitors in Charco del Palo are naked. The place is a nudist mecca - especially for older tourists. Tender diver divers are advised not to let the gaze wander too much, because everywhere "surprises" lurk for the eyes. What are these surprises?

We assemble our equipment directly at the parking lot near a small, easily walkable section of rock at the lower end of which is a natural pool. Descend over the trail into the water start two wonderful dives: The light plays under the surface stage the overgrown lava rocks and fish in the most beautiful colors. Everywhere are huge swarms, which let us drift undisturbed over the reef. The volcanic

Landscape is repeatedly pervaded by white sand stains. In the flat area, the rock bottom is full of small caves and cliffs. We see barracudas, a group of mackerel and, in short, a large flock of mackerel, romping through the blue sea. It can also be very interesting to search for caves and niches for moray eels, forage and shrimp. On the flat surfaces are often shingles, stingrays and angel sharks.

The godfather's island: Cesar Manrique is ubiquitous in Lanzarote

All-natural Do not just look at the island underwater, With the rental car we rappel every square meter on our last day and realize: Lanzarote is a unique piece of jewelry! The Timanfaya National Park with its volcanic peaks is the best example. One imagines being in a completely different world in this Martian landscape. In addition, the artist Cesár Manrique has significantly shaped the look of the island, by asserting that the overall design of the architecture should be consistent and unique: houses may be two stories high, must be painted in white and have only blue or green shutters , The international exceptional talent of the art scene has shaped many of the tourism attractions themselves: The viewpoint to the neighboring island on a hill is shaped like a monkey head, an underground lake houses a concert hall, and the house of Genius is a converted volcanic lava floor with bizarre and futuristic living spaces and works of art. You should have seen it!

Diving holiday deluxe! Our conclusion to Lanzarote

We are anyway enthusiastic about Lanzarote, which has presented itself as a fascinating island full of surprises and contrasts. And even after a week, we would still not be surprised if from somewhere the "Mars Rover" would roll past.

FAQs Lanzarote – the most important questions and answers

Here you can find our Lanzarote FAQs. In this section we answer the most important questions about the Canary Island so that you can plan your holiday well informed and prepared. We inform you about topics such as arrival, climate, sights, activities and much more. So you can relax and enjoy your stay in Lanzarote and get the best out of your holiday. Read on and get inspired!

Where best in Lanzarote?

In addition to many other great places, there are three areas on Lanzarote that I can particularly recommend for holidaymakers: On the one hand, Playa Blanca near the Papagayo beaches. There are also excellent, upscale hotels there. To other Costa Teguise and Puerto del Carmen. These places are typical vacation spots and are perfect for a relaxing vacation on Lanzarote.

Where is the most beautiful in Lanzarote?

Personally, I found it most beautiful in Lanzarote at the Playas del Papagayo (parrot beaches) and in the northeast at the Mirador del Rio, where you can look over to the island of La Graciosa. Haria is also super beautiful - "The Valley of a Thousand Palms" also in the north. And of course Timanfaya National Park is a beautiful area that is spectacular to look at.

What can you do with children in Lanzarote?

As a family, you can do a lot with your children on Lanzarote. There are many great hotels on the island that are absolutely suitable for children. You can spend a relaxing holiday with the kids in the towns of Costa Teguise and Puerto del Carmen in particular. There is plenty to discover:
- Bathing on the Papagayo beaches (Playas del Papagayo)
- Visit to the fishing village of El Golfo
- A tour of the Jameos del Agua
- View from the Mirador del Rio
- stroll in Playa Blanca
- Surf course for children on Famara Beach
- Visit to the salt production in Playa del Janubio
- Splash around in the Aqualava Water Park and Aquapark Costa Teguise
- Lanzarote Aquarium
- Castillo de San Gabriel

Where is it more beautiful Lanzarote or Fuerteventura?

Both islands are very different. While I would prefer Fuerteventura for a beach-only vacation, you can choose Lanzarote for diving and as an art fan, as this is where Cesar Manrique's works of art are located. Both islands are equally suitable for surfers.

Which of the Canary Islands is the most beautiful?

Of course, all of the Canary Islands are super beautiful. But I would make a very clear decision: Tenerife is the most beautiful Canary Island. The overall package is just right here. The island does not have many beaches, but the landscape is incredibly attractive and varied with the extensive forests, the high valley and the Teide, the highest mountain in Spain.

Which Canary Island is best in winter?

In winter Lanzarote and Fuerteventura are the best Canary Islands. They are comparatively mild and have many sunny days in winter. The other islands tend to have a little more rainfall. All in all, however, all of the Canary Islands are ideal in winter - they are very mild at over 20 degrees Celsius and there is a lot of sun overall.

Where is the calmest wind in Lanzarote?

The Playas del Papagayo (Parrot Beaches) are framed by high rocks. Because of this, they are well protected from the wind. The beaches are considered to be the most windless places on Lanzarote - but you will rarely be on Lanzarote without wind.

Where to stay in Lanzarote

I would recommend Playa Blanca for living in Lanzarote. There are numerous upscale hotels here and you are quite close to the beautiful Playas del Papagayo (parrot beaches). The best alternative to Playa Blanca is Costa Teguise. You can also have a wonderful holiday there.

Which Canary Island is the warmest?

Tenerife and Gran Canaria are the warmest islands in the Canaries. The south is the warmest and, above all, the driest in Tenerife. The area around Playa de las Americas is therefore suitable for sun lovers. In Gran Canaria, on the other hand, Playa del Ingles and Maspalomas are particularly warm and sunny.

Which of the Canary Islands has the most beautiful beaches?

Fuerteventura and Lanzarote have the most beautiful beaches in the Canary Islands. Fuerteventura has numerous long and wide beaches that stretch over large parts of the island. On Lanzarote, on the other hand, the beaches are rather smaller and limited by rocks. The Playas del Papagayo (parrot beaches) are world famous.

Where is it more beautiful Lanzarote or Tenerife?

The two islands are difficult to compare. While Lanzarote is rather barren, Tenerife also has extensive forests and a landscape that tends to be more attractive. Lanzarote, on the other hand, has the nicer beaches - especially with the Playas del Papagayo (parrot beaches). Where it is more beautiful - on Lanzarote or Tenerife - is therefore a matter of taste.

Is it very windy in Lanzarote?

The Canaries are an archipelago in the Atlantic. That is why it is more or less always windy in Lanzarote. Because of this, the island is also a popular destination for surfers. In addition, the wind makes the high temperatures in summer more bearable.

What color is the sand in Lanzarote?

The sand on Lanzarote has very different colors. On the beaches there is often fine yellow sand - for example on the Playas del Papagayo (parrot beaches). Otherwise, the colors of the rock and sand on the island range from browns to reds to anthracite and black.

What does Lanzarote offer?

Lanzarote has a lot to offer - these include the beautiful Papagayo sandy beaches, the works of art by Cesar Manrique, the volcanic landscape including the Timanfaya National Park, a wine-growing area and some of the most beautiful diving spots in the Canary Islands. In addition, Lanzarote offers a real hotspot for surfers with Famara Beach.

How beautiful is Lanzarote?

Lanzarote is a barren volcanic island with not too much vegetation. The island is still really very beautiful. The volcanoes and rock formations give it its very own look. There are also the beautiful Papagayo beaches on the island. The appearance of the island is shaped by the works of art by the artist Cesar Manrique - a real highlight of Lanzarote.

What is the capital of Lanzarote?

Arrecife has been the capital of Lanzarote since 1852. 62.988 people live in the city. That's about half of the island's total population. Arrecife is also one of the seven municipalities on the Canary Island.

How long Lanzarote?

I would plan at least a week's vacation for Lanzarote. In one week you can see the many exciting sights, do some sport and of course spend a few days on the beach and by the pool in the hotel. Of course, as with any trip, the longer the better. You can also easily spend two to three weeks in Lanzarote.

Which Canary Island?

Basically, you should have visited every Canary Island once, as each one is beautiful and has its own peculiarities. If you have to choose just one island, I would choose Tenerife - in my opinion it is the most beautiful and varied island in the Canaries.

Which Canary Island is the least touristy?

Basically, all Canary Islands are quite touristy - Lanzarote too. However, the island's government has been careful: buildings on Lanzarote must correspond to the local architecture. The island is also full of works of art by the artist Cesar Manrique. Overall, this makes the island perhaps a little less touristy than some other Canary Islands.

What are the 7 Canary Islands called?

The Canary Islands are Tenerife, Gran Canaria, Lanzarote, Fuerteventura, La Gomera, El Hierro and La Palma. These are the seven major islands of the Canaries. The archipelago has other, smaller islands.

What are the 8 Canary Islands called?

The Canary Islands are Tenerife, Gran Canaria, Lanzarote, Fuerteventura, La Gomera, El Hierro and La Palma. These are the seven major islands of the Canaries. Sometimes the island of La Graciosa is added - then there are 8 Canary Islands.

Which are the most beautiful beaches in Lanzarote?

Lanzarote has many beautiful beaches including some of the best in Spain. Among the most popular are the Papagayo beaches in the south of the island, known for their crystal clear waters and white sand. Playa Blanca is another well-known beach in southern Lanzarote. It offers beautiful views of the neighboring islands and a wide range of restaurants and bars.

In the north of the island, the beaches of Famara, Orzola and Arrieta are very popular. Famara beach offers a spectacular panorama overlooking the cliffs and the sea. Orzola and Arrieta are quiet fishing villages with flat beaches and a relaxed atmosphere.

What is there to see in Lanzarote?

Lanzarote has many attractions to offer. One of the best known is the Timanfaya National Park with its fascinating volcanic landscape. Another popular attraction is the Jameos del Agua, a series of underground caves designed by the famous artist and architect César Manrique.

Other attractions include the cactus garden, the Mirador del Rio with a breathtaking view of the neighboring island of La Graciosa and the Museum of Teguise with historical artefacts. A tour of the La Geria wine region and the Valley of the 1000 Palms is also highly recommended.

What is the nightlife like in Lanzarote?

Lanzarote has a lively nightlife with many bars, clubs and restaurants, especially in the tourist centers such as Puerto del Carmen and Playa Blanca. Live music and theme nights are held here regularly. Nightlife can be quieter in other areas, but again there is a good selection of restaurants and bars.

When is the best time to visit Lanzarote?

Lanzarote has a pleasant climate all year round and is therefore a popular tourist destination. However, the best time to travel depends on personal preferences. If you want to avoid hot temperatures and crowded beaches, the spring and autumn months are ideal. The summer months are the hottest and most crowded, but also the best time to enjoy the sea. Winter is mild and pleasant, but can get a bit chilly on some days.

Best time to visit Lanzarote

Lanzarote is known for its mild and sunny climate and is also called the "Island of Eternal Spring". Therefore, the island can be visited all year round, but there are certain times that are particularly recommended. A good time to visit Lanzarote is April and May when the weather is warm and not as hot as in the height of summer. Late autumn is also a good time to travel to Lanzarote, as the temperatures are still pleasant and the island is not as crowded as in the high season.

Athletes can take advantage of the mild winter

Winter is ideal for sports enthusiasts such as cyclists and hikers, as the temperatures are pleasant and not too hot. Summer is ideal for sun worshipers and beach lovers, although it can get very crowded. Temperatures rise to around 35 degrees Celsius in summer and there is plenty of sunshine.

It is also important to know that due to the geographical location towards Africa, it can be very windy on the island. General information about Lanzarote

With an age of over 15 million years, Lanzarote is one of the oldest islands in the Canary Archipelago. Throughout its history, the island has experienced more than 2.141 volcanic eruptions, which have shaped the island's image. Timanfaya National Park is an impressive example of the island's volcanic activity and a must-see for every visitor.

With La Graciosa, the southeasternmost of the Canary Islands

One of Lanzarote's many special features is its location right next to the small island of La Graciosa, which is considered the eighth Canary Island and is a wonderful place to visit during a holiday in Lanzarote. The island itself has an area of 845,94 km² and measures about 58 kilometers from north to south and 34 kilometers in the greatest east-west extension. With a coastline of 213 kilometers, Lanzarote offers 10 kilometers of sandy beaches and 16,5 kilometers of pebbly and rocky beaches. The island also has two mountain ranges: the Famara massif to the north and Los Ajaches to the south.

Lanzarote has a mild climate all year round with little rainfall as the island is in the trade wind zone which brings fresh winds from the north to north-east. The average air temperature is 20,5 °C, with the two most extreme months being January with an average of 16,9 °C and August with an average of 24,7 °C. The water temperature varies between 17°C in winter and 22°C in summer.

Lanzarote was the first island to be declared a Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO in 1993, underscoring the importance and uniqueness of the island.

Where is Lanzarote?

Lanzarote is a stunning island that is not only special geographically. It is one of the Canary Islands and is around 1.000 kilometers southwest of the Iberian Peninsula. Due to its exposed location, it is characterized by two different climate zones and is therefore a paradise for sun worshipers and outdoor fans. With an area of 845 square kilometers, it is the fourth largest island in the Canary archipelago, but relatively sparsely populated. Only around 135.000 people live on Lanzarote, with the population spread across several towns and villages. To the north of the island are the Chinijo Islands, which include La Graciosa, Alegranza, Montaña Clara, Roque del Este and Roque del Oeste. Lanzarote itself is only about 140 kilometers from the African coast, which is why the island is often referred to as the bridge between Europe and Africa.

Who is Lanzarote suitable for?

Lanzarote is an island that appeals to many different interests and audiences. Those who love sun and sand can discover many beautiful beaches and bays on Lanzarote, ranging from quiet and lonely to lively and busy. Divers and surfers also get their money's worth, because the island is surrounded by crystal clear water and offers numerous opportunities to explore the underwater world or the waves. Sports enthusiasts will get their money's worth with cycling, hiking or jogging.

Art lovers will also get their money's worth on Lanzarote, as the island was the home of the famous artist César Manrique, whose influence can still be felt on the island today. Another reason to visit Lanzarote is the Canarian cuisine. Here you can get to know and enjoy the typical dishes of the island and the Canary Islands. Families with children will find Lanzarote an ideal holiday destination as there are many child-friendly hotels, beaches and activities. The island also offers good infrastructure and a pleasant working atmosphere for digital nomads who work from anywhere. In short: Lanzarote is a holiday destination for almost everyone - whether luxury lovers, active holidaymakers or sun worshipers.

Lanzarote Alternatives – Where is it most worthwhile?

If you are looking for alternatives to Lanzarote, there are a few options that you can consider. But don't forget that Lanzarote is a unique island with its own charm and flair that you should definitely visit if you have the chance. If you have already visited Lanzarote or are looking for new travel destinations, you should also check out the neighboring islands of Tenerife and Gran Canaria. Both islands are larger than Lanzarote and therefore offer even more opportunities for leisure activities. On Tenerife, for example, there is the Teide National Park with the highest mountain in Spain and Gran Canaria is known for its dune landscapes and beaches.

Those looking for a cheaper destination should consider Madeira as an alternative. The island in the Atlantic is known for its lush vegetation and mild climate. It also offers some activities like hiking and canyoning. If you prefer a Mediterranean destination, there are also some alternatives. Sardinia, for example, offers breathtaking beaches and a fascinating history, while Mallorca impresses with its beautiful bays and the Tramuntana mountains. Whichever alternative you choose, it always pays to compare the different options to find the best travel destination for you.
