Diving in the Baltic Sea experience report - Scharbeutz as a house reef?

by

There is hardly anything more fascinating than exploring the underwater world. For many divers, trips to exotic dive sites are a priority. It is often forgotten that there are also great diving opportunities in our local waters. The Baltic Sea is certainly not a blank slate, because there are numerous dive sites to discover here too. In this report, we would like to focus on a region that is particularly important to us: the Bay of Lübeck near the Baltic Sea resort of Scharbeutz. I set out to explore the underwater world. You can find out how we fared and what we saw in our small diving trip report. Let's dive into the depths of the Baltic Sea together!

Table of Contents show

On the topic Diving Many people immediately think of distant destinations like the Maldives or Indonesia. But why travel far away when there are great diving areas right on your doorstep? The Baltic Sea is certainly not unknown when it comes to diving and also offers exciting diving opportunities near the popular holiday resort of Scharbeutz. When I moved from Hamburg to Scharbeutz some time ago, it was clear to me that I wanted to dive the large blue-green body of water on our doorstep as quickly as possible. But again and again there were excuses that stopped me: the water was still too cold, too cloudy or there weren't enough fish to be seen. As a self-confessed tropical diver with a penchant for diving holidays on the Maldives I always had something to complain about about diving in the Baltic Sea.

But then I finally decided to give it a try. And what should I say? I was positively surprised! Of course, diving in the Baltic Sea cannot be compared to diving in the Maldives or Raja Ampat. But it's something incredibly beautiful and worth trying. And best of all, you don't have to fly halfway across the world to discover great dive sites. Even if it took me a while to dare, it was definitely worth it in the end. Lübeck Bay offers beautiful dive sites with a wide variety of marine life. I was particularly impressed by the visibility under water, which is sometimes up to 20 meters.

But even those who don't quite dare to jump directly into the water in full gear can try the easy version first: Snorkeling in the Baltic Sea. There's plenty to see here too, from sea anemones to mussels and curious fish. All in all, I can only recommend every diver or snorkeler to explore the local waters. It's worth it, even if it's a bit tiring. And who knows, you might even find your new favorite dive spot right on your doorstep.

As a passionate diver, I wanted to share my enthusiasm for diving in the Baltic Sea with my readers. Many people shy away from diving in local waters, preferring exotic dive destinations instead. There is also a lot to discover and experience in the Baltic Sea. With this diving trip report, I would like to motivate my readers to try diving in the Baltic Sea and discover the beauty of the underwater world right on our doorstep. Because I am convinced that it is worth exploring the local waters and discovering new dive sites. So join me on my dives in the Bay of Lübeck and let yourself be inspired by the fascination of diving in the Baltic Sea!

Diving in the Baltic Sea near Scharbeutz - the unexpected often happens

My experiences

The fact that I ended up diving in the Baltic Sea was largely due to a tragic coincidence. The story is no joke and it really happened to me: sometimes the best opportunities just happen by chance. On the Baltic Sea I travel with the SUP board much more often. By a tragic coincidence, during a SUP tour between Scharbeutz and Haffkrug on Saturday evening, my cell phone fell into the sea. All attempts to fish the expensive smartphone, which is in a waterproof protective case, out of the water fail. I watch inattentively as the high-tech gadget sinks into the greenish water. The device lies almost seven meters deep at the bottom of the cloudy, cold Baltic Sea. Will it ever be found?

Hardly under these conditions. I quickly get my snorkeling equipment and the SUP to the place where I lost it. But bad luck, the smartphone sank in the murky water! I needed help as quickly as possible because it was only a matter of time before the technical device sank hopelessly at the bottom of the Baltic Sea. The only salvation: diving in the Baltic Sea. Not far from where it happened, on the outskirts of Scharbeutz, is the diving center “Tauchen Ostsee”, with whom I had already discussed my first dive in the Baltic Sea by email, but not yet in person. Luckily, I catch Oliver Volz, the head of the diving center, early in the evening, who, after a slight smile about my faux pas, gives me advice and support.

Early on Sunday morning I met with the experienced divers Jessy and Andreas to search for my lost one in the Bay of Lübeck Smartphone to search. Even though I had already given up, the two divers encouraged me and promised to search the area thoroughly. Together we drove in a car from the diving center to the diving site between Scharbeutz and Haffkrug. When we arrived at the beach, we put on our diving suits and discussed our route. We wanted to narrow down the area as precisely as possible to optimize our search. Even from the surface of the water we could see how shallow the sea is in this area.

When we went into the water with our equipment, the other beachgoers were skeptical and eyed us suspiciously. Some even took photos of us as if we were from another planet. But we didn't let that deter us. We had a clear goal in mind and were ready to give everything to find my lost smartphone. Before we could dive down, we had to go a little way into the water and get away from it Beach remove. Because the sea was very shallow at this point and we didn't want to dive until we were at least two meters deep.

But when we finally went underground, we were immediately rewarded. The slightly cloudy, greenish water created a special atmosphere and an unbelievable calm. The seabed was full of different seashells, seaweed grew out of the bottom, around which different seashells and starfish were often clustered. Crabs of all sizes, colors and shapes scurried across the floor. We searched the entire search area and dived all of the bottom within our route. From time to time I had a dive where I was completely focused on the underwater world and didn't even look for my smartphone. Finally, Jessy had the saving idea: she bravely reached into the seabed and pulled the bag with my smartphone out of the sand, which was almost completely covered with sediment.

I could hardly believe it! After almost two hours we finally had our lost smartphone back. The joy was enormous and I felt like a dolphin jumping out of the water for joy. But instead of ending the dive immediately, we took some time to enjoy the underwater world. We watched them Wildlife like crabs and small, newly hatched garfish hiding in the seaweed.

After almost two hours under water we were completely frozen but proud of our achievement. That was my longest dive - and my first in the Baltic Sea! I am amazed by the beauty and diversity of the underwater world in the Baltic Sea and will definitely come back to explore more dive sites. I can only recommend it to everyone who has not yet tried diving in the Baltic Sea. It may not compare to a diving holiday in the tropics or other exotic locations, but there is still a unique and fascinating underwater world to explore.

In addition, diving in the Baltic Sea has some advantages. It is practically on our doorstep and is therefore very cheap and easy to reach. It's also generally very safe and diving conditions are good, especially in the summer months when the water is pleasantly warm and visibility is good. If you want to try diving in the Baltic Sea first, you can also try snorkeling. This is a good way to get acquainted with the underwater world and gain some initial experience. There are many beautiful snorkeling spots in the Baltic Sea where you can discover a colorful variety of fish, algae and other underwater creatures.

All in all, my dive in the Baltic Sea near Scharbeutz was an unforgettable experience. I'm happy that I found my lost smartphone, but I'm even more excited about the beauty and diversity of the underwater world of the Baltic Sea. It is definitely worth trying scuba diving in the Baltic Sea and experiencing for yourself what wonders lie beneath the surface of the water.

My experiences diving in the Baltic Sea - wonderful diving area

After my first dive in the Baltic Sea near Scharbeutz I am totally enthusiastic. I had no idea that there was so much to discover and that diving in the Baltic Sea could be so much fun. The success of our dive certainly contributed to my desire for more. But the conversations with diving instructor Olli also made me curious.

There are many interesting dive sites to discover in the Baltic Sea. Some of these are challenging even for experienced divers because they are deeper and offer more demanding conditions. For example, there are wrecks from the past that have yet to be explored. But there are also many opportunities for beginners to get to know the underwater world of the Baltic Sea. Instructor Olli and his team offer courses for all levels of experience and are happy to help you find the right dive site.

For me, diving in the Baltic Sea near Scharbeutz was just the beginning. I really want to discover more of the underwater world and gain new experiences. The Baltic Sea has so much to offer and I am excited to explore more dive sites and see what lies beneath the surface. Anyone who has not yet dived in the Baltic Sea should definitely try it and be inspired by the beauty and diversity of the underwater world. And those who already have diving experience will certainly find many new challenges in the Baltic Sea. In any case, I am already looking forward to my next diving trip to the Baltic Sea and will report about it.

FAQs Baltic Sea - the most important questions and answers

I have put together the most important questions and answers about holidays on the Baltic Sea for you.

Where is the most beautiful place on the Baltic Sea?

The correct question should be: Where on the Baltic Sea is the most beautiful “for you”? Because the German Baltic Sea coast has so many beautiful areas where you can vacation all year round. If you want chic and hustle and bustle, drive to the Lübeck Bay to Scharbeutz or Timmendorfer Strand. If you are looking for natural beaches, go to Fehmarn or Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. There are beautiful beaches and architecture on Rügen, for example. You can also go on cheap holidays in the east - for example in Fischland Darß-Zingst. The popular hot spots like the Bay of Lübeck are becoming more and more expensive - there you can have a good wellness holiday and luxury holiday. Overall, however, the Baltic coast has something to offer for every taste and budget.

What does a holiday apartment on the Baltic Sea cost?

From my own experience, I know that you can get a holiday apartment on the Baltic Sea for around 30 euros per night. After that, however, you have to search a little and often book directly with a private landlord. The prices vary widely. If you book through portals, you usually have to expect at least 70 to 100 euros per night for a reasonable apartment - and above all book in good time, because holiday apartments and holiday homes on the Baltic Sea are often booked out months in advance. Of course, prices vary depending on where you book and what season you want to travel.

Which beach is the most beautiful on the Baltic Sea?

Also the question "Which beach is the most beautiful on the Baltic Sea?" cannot be answered in such a general way. Sure you can make a ranking of the most beautiful beaches on the Baltic Sea, but that would not do justice to many other beaches. You should rather narrow it down to your preferred holiday region: "Which is the most beautiful beach on Fehmarn?" - "Which is the most beautiful beach in the Bay of Lübeck?" In this way one comes much closer to the individually fitting answer. I personally find the beach in Sierksdorf very beautiful - for me it is the most beautiful beach in the Baltic Sea.

Why vacation on the Baltic Sea?

Why should you take a vacation on the Baltic Sea? Very simple: The sea can be reached quickly by car from all over Central Europe. And on site you can expect clear water, idyllic beaches, a Baltic atmosphere and great accommodations. If you are a bit away from the typical tourist hot spots, with a bit of luck you will even get some untouched nature. Overall, a holiday in the Baltic Sea is also quite cheap - especially in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. You can leave as much money in the popular holiday regions as you would on a two-week luxury holiday on the Mediterranean.

Where is it cheapest on the Baltic Sea?

The Baltic coast in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania is rather cheap. Between Boltenhagen, Insel Poel, Fischland Darß-Zingst, Rügen and Usedom you can spend relatively cheap holidays on the Baltic Sea. If you want something cheaper, you can go on vacation in Mecklenburg Switzerland and then simply plan a few day trips to the sea.

Which is better - North Sea or Baltic Sea?

Basically, it is a matter of taste whether you like the North Sea or the Baltic Sea better. Personally, I prefer the Baltic Sea because the inland sea is a bit more protected, the water is not quite as salty when swimming and bathing and the tides with ebb and flow are not as pronounced. In addition, the landscape of the Baltic Sea coast tends to be a little more varied and the Baltic Sea coast in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania in particular is a little cheaper. But you don't have the endlessly wide beaches of the North Sea on the Baltic Sea. Whether the North Sea or the Baltic Sea is better is also a matter of taste. Both seas have something for themselves.

Which beach on the Baltic Sea?

Also the question "Which beach on the Baltic Sea?" cannot be answered in such a general way.

Where is it warmest on the Baltic Sea?

Warm is more of a relative term on the Baltic Sea, as it is usually a little fresher by the sea. In summer, temperatures only rise above 20 degrees on a few days. It is always a little cooler on the Baltic Sea than inland. It can only get really hot right on the coast in extreme summer. I would therefore not describe any place on the Baltic Sea coast as really warm. However, if you want to have some sun in the cooler temperatures, you are right on Fehmarn or Rügen - both places are among the sunniest regions in Germany.

Where is the most beautiful place on the Baltic Sea with children?

I would definitely spend a Baltic Sea holiday in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania with the kids. Anyone who spends their Baltic Sea holiday with children in the Bay of Lübeck in Scharbeutz or Timmendorfer Strand can pay a small fortune for three to five people. You can also book a two-week package tour to the Mediterranean and at least be relatively sure that you will get plenty of sun and warmth. Fischland Darß-Zingst, for example, is ideal for a holiday in the Baltic Sea with children, where you have kilometers of wonderful beaches and find relatively cheap accommodation.

Which is the most beautiful island in the Baltic Sea?

All Baltic Sea islands have something for themselves and each has its own advantages. In my opinion, the most beautiful Baltic Sea islands are Fehmarn and Rügen. The overall package is just right on both islands. You have beautiful beaches, great accommodations and lots to do. Both islands are ideal so that there is no boredom on vacation.

What should one have seen on the Baltic Sea?

There is so much to do along the Baltic Sea coast. You can bathe and swim, ride a bike, hike in the hinterland, take a boat out, stand up paddling, have delicious food in many places, go to the thermal baths in bad weather, visit a farm and discover many sights. You should definitely have seen the chalk cliffs on Rügen. You can also stroll in Timmendorfer Strand or Scharbeutz, take the ferry from Travemünde to Scandinavia, discover natural beaches on Fehmarn or explore lively cities such as Lübeck, Kiel, Rostock or Stralsund.

What is beautiful Scharbeutz or Timmendorfer Strand?

Timmendorfer Strand and Scharbeutz are located in the Bay of Lübeck and, as neighboring towns, are right next to each other. Basically, both places don't take much. Unfortunately, the places have become very hyped in recent years and become a destination for strong mass tourism. Timmendorfer Strand tends to be more suitable for older people, while Scharbeutz appeals to the younger ones. In principle, however, you cannot say which of the two is more beautiful. Both places have something for themselves. Basically, you should like the hustle and bustle and chic.

Why is the Baltic Sea so popular?

Why is the Baltic Sea so popular? Very simple: The sea can be reached quickly by car from Germany and all of Central Europe.

Where is it most beautiful in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania?

Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania is one of the most beautiful holiday regions in Germany. There are numerous great areas to discover throughout the state. In my opinion it is most beautiful, of course, by the sea - that is, on the Baltic Sea coast of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. I personally like Rügen very much, in my opinion it is the most beautiful place there in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania.

Which is cheaper - North Sea or Baltic Sea?

It's a shame, of course, because the prices vary according to location and season as well as the respective provider. A holiday in Germany on the coast tends to be the cheapest in Mecklenburg Western Pomerania. And accordingly one can say that the Baltic Sea is cheaper than the North Sea.

Is it warm on the Baltic Sea?

According to my personal coldness, it is not - or rarely - warm at the Baltic Sea.

Is Scharbeutz beautiful?

My personal opinion about it: Scharbeutz is a very nice place. I lived there for a couple of years. In recent years, however, the resort in the Bay of Lübeck has unfortunately become more of a destination for mass tourism and is degenerating more and more into an overpriced fancy holiday resort, whose construction boom is driving real estate prices and rents to unaffordable heights. On the one hand, Scharbeutz has become more modern and visually appealing, but on the other hand it has lost a lot of authenticity, is becoming more and more expensive and is now overcrowded in summer, but also all year round, because it has received such a strong media presence and is hyped. From then on, Scharbeutz is still very beautiful.
