Ideal for long walks

For long walks Beach The right season has long since arrived. You can really breathe deeply - it clears your lungs and, above all, your head. When I lived in Scharbeutz in the Bay of Lübeck, I spent as much time outside as possible in the spring. Because it's a pleasant time with wonderful air - and it's still pretty empty. I can therefore warmly recommend that you plan one this year Getaway by the sea, because the Baltic Sea in spring is simply wonderful.

Calm and contemplative atmosphere

The calm and contemplative atmosphere gives you the opportunity to really unwind and simply switch off. And not only that: with a bit of luck you can also soak up some sun and warmth. Sometimes the temperatures rise above the 10 degree mark and, especially from the end of April, there can be a few early summer days. But admittedly, especially if you come from southern Germany, you will notice that nature up here in the north is still a few weeks behind us in the Bay of Lübeck.

In spring life slowly returns

I can warmly – or coldly – recommend: Also one Winter holidays on the Baltic Sea definitely has its advantages. But in the end everyone is happy when the dark season at the sea is over and life returns. It just takes a while for the north and the coast to wake up from their hibernation. But once the time has come, spring will come with full force on the Baltic Sea.

My experiences with a spring vacation on the Baltic Sea

Six reasons why now is the perfect time to go to the sea

Luckily, I was able to experience spring on the Baltic Sea coast more than once. Admittedly, this is something different than in southern Germany, for example. If you're from the south, you should really pack a thick jacket. But it's worth it - especially in the Bay of Lübeck with its quaint, small holiday resorts.

The fish sellers at the harbor in Niendorf are already open in March and the first hard-core people are already sitting outside and eating fish, while some are already coming out with ice cream from the small ice cream parlor at the harbor. The sailing boats are still in their winter quarters, but the paths around the harbor and the promenade in front of the beach are already well filled with visitors. Next door in Timmendorfer Strand you can shop to your heart's content in the fashion stores, drink coffee under the heaters and watch the hustle and bustle.

Timmendorfer Strand is a hotspot

In Timmendorfer Strand the motto is: see and be seen. Maybe you’ll even spot one or two celebrities here? For example, I once just met Roberto Blanco and his wife in a perfumery while I was shopping myself. And if you in Scharbeutz, the modern center of the Bay of Lübeck, stroll along the promenade and stop for a hot drink in a café, with a bit of luck your jacket can stay open.

When spring comes and winter comes to an end, it is simply wonderful in the Bay of Lübeck - did I mention that already? As you can see, my experiences with the Baltic Sea vacation in spring are pretty positive. Below I would like to give you a few more reasons.

In spring you have the Baltic Sea beach on some days for you alone. Photo: Sascha Tegtmeyer

1. In the spring you can make even more relaxed Baltic Sea holidays

Anyone who comes to the Bay of Lübeck in spring will have the promenades and beach to themselves, at least during the week. But it gets busier every year in spring. More and more people are taking short vacations by the sea in March and April. During the Easter holidays anyway. It's still relatively quiet, but probably not for long. The towns in the Bay of Lübeck, especially Scharbeutz and Timmendorfer Strand, are slowly but surely developing into a year-round destination that is also attractive for many holidaymakers in winter.

This year in particular, since the beginning of January, weekends, especially Sundays, have been almost as crowded as in summer. When the sun comes out, there are already a noticeable number of day visitors on weekends in January and February. If you stay in a holiday apartment or holiday home for a week, you will still have some peace and quiet on weekdays in spring.

2. Holiday apartments and holiday homes are relatively cheap for spring vacations in the Baltic Sea

If you want to have a fairly inexpensive holiday in the Bay of Lübeck, spring is exactly the right time of year. In the early season, holiday apartments and holiday homes sometimes cost significantly less. Price discounts of 50 percent and more are possible in the off-season. The price difference is not that high for restaurants and cafes. The main season in Timmendorfer Strand, Scharbeutz and Co. is in the summer months from mid-May to the end of September.

But that's no reason at all to miss holiday apartments and holiday homes in spring. Experience has shown that they are often cozy and comfortably furnished and sometimes have a sauna, whirlpool and wellness facilities. This makes them a wonderful and contemplative retreat from everyday stress, even in winter. What could be nicer than your own little kingdom with a sea view on the Baltic Sea?

3. Many leisure activities - Baltic Sea holidays in spring are particularly suitable for families

No, it's not yet the season for splashing around and going swimming. Warm winter holiday destinations can be found elsewhere. And if you want to build a sandcastle on the Baltic Sea beach in spring, you'll probably have to wrap yourself up a little more. Nevertheless, a Baltic Sea holiday in spring is particularly suitable for families. The towns of Niendorf, Timmendorfer Strand and Scharbeutz are not yet too crowded. If you're there with your family in the summer, it's just crowded and that can easily become stressful, especially if there are several people there.

On the beach you can hardly get a foot on the ground in front of people, you have to make a reservation at the restaurant, you stand in line for a midday snack and everywhere is guaranteed to be packed. Now in spring you can enjoy the additional space, splash around in the Baltic Sea thermal baths on rainy days or enjoy the rural cosiness with a visit to Karl's adventure farm. Families are guaranteed not to get bored on a Baltic Sea holiday in spring.

4. Sailing, Stand Up Paddling and Diving in the Baltic Sea in spring already possible?

If you're on vacation at the coast in spring, you don't have to completely miss out on direct contact with the water. Admittedly, it is still too cold to swim in spring. If you really want to do this, you should only venture into the water with a wetsuit. Before May 01st, only very few, particularly hard-core swimmers, dare to enter the water. With a water temperature of four to eight degrees it is better to stay dry. The situation is different with water sports such as sailing, stand-up paddling and diving. The wind conditions at sea are particularly good in spring, especially for sailors and windsurfers.

Stand Up Paddling is easily possible with the right equipment. If you want to train for the SUP World Cup in Scharbeutz in the summer, you should start early. The Baltic Sea is also suitable as a destination for divers almost all year round. If you don't mind the cool sea water, you can do it all year round go diving in the Baltic Sea. The diving schools in the Bay of Lübeck also go into the water in winter and spring - although somewhat to a limited extent. However, a dry suit is strongly recommended in the winter months.

5. Baltic Sea vacation in spring - dog fans get their money's worth

Many Baltic Sea vacationers are dog fans. In the winter season you can bring your dog to the beach in the entire Bay of Lübeck from Niendorf, Timmendorfer Strand, Scharbeutz, Haffkrug to Sierksdorf. Of course, the coastal strip invites you to take a long walk with your loved one. In spring, dogs frolic in the water, get to know other four-legged friends and can enjoy time by the sea with their family. For dog lovers, the period from October 01st to March 31st is absolutely the first choice for a Baltic Sea holiday.

Unfortunately, the fun is over from April: From then on, dogs are only allowed on the selected dog beaches until the end of September. In Scharbeutz and Timmendorfer Strand, the dog beaches are a little outside and can only be reached by a long walk or car ride. There is a dog beach near the Ostseetherme, an area for dogs at the marina in Niendorf and in Haffkrug there is a larger section where dogs are allowed on the beach even in summer.

6. Spring Horseback Ride by the Sea - Horseback riding on the beach possible until the end of March

And riders also get their money’s worth in the spring. Horses can be taken to the beach until March 31st. Riding on the Baltic Sea beach is a very special experience for many riders. The coast invites you to go on long rides and even gallop through the shallow waters of the Baltic Sea. There are numerous excellent riding stables in the Bay of Lübeck where you can rent a horse for a ride or keep your own animal.

Who is a Baltic Sea vacation in spring suitable for?

Basically, a Baltic Sea holiday in spring is suitable for very different travelers with many different preferences. If you are an outdoor fan and active holidaymaker, you can get some fresh air and take long walks on the beach. If you like to relax, detox and go on a wellness holiday, you can stay in one of the wellness temples - for example Bayside Scharbeutz* or in Hotel Gran Belvedere* with sauna area right next door in the Ostseetherme.

If you like it cheap, you can find great holiday accommodation at relaxed prices. This even applies to the Bay of Lübeck in the spring before the Easter holidays. But even more so for the Baltic Sea coast in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. You can stay there even cheaper in March, April and May.

Baltic Sea vacation in spring - enjoy the peace and fresh air

My conclusion

The days when dogs froze in the Bay of Lübeck in late autumn, winter and spring are long gone. When the sun was already shining beautifully on the first weekend in January 2018, the residents of Timmendorfer Strand experienced, Scharbeutz and Niendorf a true natural spectacle: On this first Sunday of the year, so many day visitors came to the Baltic Sea that all the streets on the coast were clogged and there were almost as many people present as in midsummer. To date, there has rarely been such a large crowd of people at the lake in the middle of winter.

Just take a quick trip to the sea and enjoy the fresh air. For many people this now seems to be a worthwhile ideal. Day trips and short vacations on the Baltic Sea are now particularly popular – all year round. Nevertheless, in my opinion, spring is an excellent time of year to plan your Baltic Sea vacation. Hopefully the cold winter is over and Timmendorfer Strand, Niendorf, Scharbeutz, Haffkrug and Sierksdorf are not yet as crowded as in midsummer.
