Egypt tour from Hurghada to Marsa Alam - and back

My journey begins with a road trip - from the airport in Hurghada down to 280 kilometers away Marsa Alam. I'm excited, because what I did not read everything before departure and what was not written: "Be vigilant!" Advises the Foreign Ministry - "Watch out for yourself!" Say the dear relatives. And now I am here - more than 4500 kilometers from Hamburg away on the Egyptian Red Sea Highway in the middle of nowhere, on the left the turquoise blue sea, on the right far and wide mountains and desert. Just me and my driver. I'm tense - let's call it vigilant! You have to clearly differentiate between the west coast of the Red Sea and the holiday resort Sharm El Sheik (travelogue) on the Sinai. There was always more activity.

Fortunately, this state of affairs only lasts for a very short time: we pass the south on our tour Makadi Bay (travelogue), Soma Bay, through Safaga (travel report)where Egypt is still authentic and then by El Quseir. As we drive slowly across the dusty, potholed main street of the small fishing village, I see Egyptian children romping on the street and playing football, women with and without a headscarf laughing, strolling from shop to shop, and men relaxing with a hookah. What a contrast to the tourist center Hurghada! It suddenly becomes clear to me: For the rest of this journey, you will not be vigilant, but above all mindful, and absorb the diversity of this land and the underwater world of the Red Sea into you. Said and done!

Egypt round trip stop 1: Diving with manatee in Marsa Alam

After almost a day's journey, I can't wait to get into the water! My first stop is the Extra Divers dive center in the Three Corners Equinox north of Marsa Alam. The Egyptian-born base manager Mohamed speaks excellent German and organizes dives for us from shore and with the Zodiac. The Dive Center is right on the beach, so we can mostly hang out right by the sea.

Our first dive is in a small, secluded bay south of the hotel. Over the sandy beach you go into the turquoise-green water and left shoulder into the reef. Insanity! After a four-year break, I'm finally back in the Red Sea - I almost forgot how beautiful it is. The corals with their colorful splendor, the abundance of fish with the colorful parrot fish, barracudas, mackerel, tuna - and the usual 30 meters visibility. But hopefully that won't be all: I'm still longingly waiting for it, finally one day Sharks in the Red Sea to see!

My personal highlight in Marsa Alam, however, was a reef dweller that I did not even have on my radar before: The Dugong! - The Manatee of Marsa Alam! It estimates the stock at about seven animals throughout the Red Sea, Two of them live permanently at the house reef of the Equinox. When we return with the Zodiac, one of the meter-long animals puffs up next to us. Immediately we jump into the water with ABC. Like a mix of Wal, Dolphin and seal, the dugong ransacked the bottom of the sea with its mouth and emerges every few minutes to catch its breath. We dive close enough to touch next to the animal, What a surreal sight!

Egypt round trip stop 2: Relax, beach, snorkel and dive in Mövenpick El Quseir

Next stop on my tour is the Mövenpick Resort in El Quseir. The Five star hotel rumored to have the most beautiful house reef on the Red Sea and the second best in the world. The hotel is built in the style of a Nubian village and fits seamlessly into the landscape. The associated diving center is on the house beach and has its own jetty, so that access to the house reef is only a stone's throw away. Center manager Mark Hügi and his large team attach great importance to perfection in order to offer the often well-heeled customers an extraordinary underwater experience.

I go on an exploration tour with my private guide Mohamed on the reef, which offers a number of variants: left shoulder, right shoulder or in the middle there are large reef blocks overgrown with soft and hard corals, some of which grow like towers to the surface. Blue spotted rays, crocodile fish and much smaller animals cavort in this extraordinary house spot. Dolphins can also be seen here from time to time. "Last year a whale shark got lost here in the bay", reports base manager Hügi. The huge fish swam right near the entrance to the bay and amazed both vacationers and guides.

Who is less for big fish and Hedge In the middle of the lagoon you can spend an interesting macro area and look for seahorses on the sandy bottom or watch out for ray-billed babies, because the sheltered reefs are the nursery for many species. A truly extraordinary underwater adventure playground, where I spend hours exploring and still finding new horizons thanks to Guide Mohamed, who's been on the road for 20 years. Only the Search for sharks is again unsuccessful. who the shy predators wants to watch, already needs patience.

Egypt round trip stop 3: Sharm El Naga south of Hurghada

What could be better for you? Diverto be almost alone at one base and all around of his instructors and guides to be cared for? Of course just as undisturbed to jump on beautiful, little-dived reefs into the water! I can enjoy this experience at my next stop in the Bay of Sharm El Naga near Makadi Bay. The Viva Blue Resort and the integrated dive center have been open for a few weeks now - but most bookings do not fall until April. It is still really quiet here.

That's why I can fully enjoy the tranquility and seclusion of this resort. Finally switch off! And from my room I just need to go down the stairs to get to the base. The two base managers Robert and Marisa have just completed all work on their brand new dive center, and can now fully dedicate themselves to my underwater tours. Because it really only starts with the guests from April, we can now dive completely informally - when and how we want it. Together with Guide Saber we start to some unique diving trips: From the base it is only two minutes walk to the jetty. From there you can either left or right shoulder into the house reef - a miles long, extensive fringing reef - start, or take the Zodiac to the more remote spots.

Together we explore the easily accessible, natural places where not many dives have taken place. The vegetation with hard and soft corals is an absolute eye-catcher! At the Sadana dive site there is an ancient wreck with well-preserved large and small amphorae. But on my highlight in Sharm El Naga I meet on the Ras Um Hesiwa reef: a trusting hawksbill sea turtle that doesn't let anyone or anything disturb it. I approach carefully so as not to frighten the animal. For a moment we examine each other curiously - non-verbal communication doesn't only work with the buddy or guide! Then we go on our way again. These are those little diving moments that make a diver come out of the water with a big grin!

Egypt round trip stop 4: The last stop is a liveaboard safari

Another week follows Diving in Egypt: After my visit to Sharm El Naga, my path leads me back to Hurghada and to the Seawolf head office, because we are going to a very special kind of liveaboard. One week of sidemount diving - fed up with the Rosalie Moller, the Thistlegorm and Co. with tour guide and organizer Moni Hofbauer and the sidemount professional Axel Früh. In contrast to the usual backmount, these divers carry their tanks on the side.

"You have a better location in the water and a completely new feeling of freedom when diving," says Jan Bigge, who works with me Egypt diving safari goes. The 25 year old starts with me on the cruise and is already an experienced sidemounter who has already logged 70 dives with the special jacket and the two 12 liter bottles. I, on the other hand, am still a complete rookie - and while we are heading full steam ahead to the wrecks in the north, I will start my course with Axel early.

The Friborg knows himself with this Type of diving In the foreground is clearly the safety aspect of sidemount diving! The diver has full control of his system at all times, "explains the 40 year-old dive shop owner. You can easily get to the cylinder valves and could act without problems if necessary. In addition, the coolness factor is just a serious reason for younger underwater athletes to start with the sidemount.

For me, the difference seems a bit like skiing and snowboarding. Reason enough to try it! I'm doing the SSI starter course for Sidemounter at Axel. Two evenings of theory with keynote presentation and off you go to the device. I'm going to dive with the Razor, the most minimalistic buoyancy compensator I've ever seen. Developed by industry insiders and specially adapted to the needs of this type of diving. A few straps, a few bungees, D-rings, inflator and bladder - that's all you need. The jacket is thought through down to the last detail. The lead is pulled onto the straps and the rubber bungees are adjusted, the bottles are provided with lung regulators and prepared.

The first bottle is hung in the harness on the diving deck. With the second one in hand, we jump into the turquoise blue water - and we will do this a few more times this week. The second bottle is hung in the cool water and off you go on fascinating tours. With the bottles under our arms we slide weightlessly through the water. Sidemounters and ordinary backmounters are on board on the cruise. The sidemount crew - to which I can count myself from now on - goes into the water first and, thanks to the double 12-bottle bottle, comes out last. The limits are no longer set by air consumption, but only by personal coldness and the no-decompression limit. Our dives are mostly between 60 and 80 minutes!

Adventurous and relaxing: conclusion after almost two weeks tour of Egypt

After two weeks Holidays in Egypt My conclusion is quite clear: Egypt not only feels safe, it feels really good! The locals along the Red Sea coast are struggling to offer travelers a unique travel experience. The Egyptian hospitality is as great as ever. Although there may be places in the country where you should not roam better - but they are in German cities too. Of course, everyone has to decide for themselves where they are going.

Who dives sidemount and goes with two bottles into the water, has some advantages!
Who dives sidemount and goes with two bottles into the water, has some advantages!

But for divers Egypt is always worth a look. All in all, the dive sites are in good shape and have obviously recovered well in recent years, with the capacities at the bases available - and where else can you find them? a tropical seawhich is only four and a half flight hours away from Germany? Over the past 14 days, I have dived on 30 dives on the most beautiful reefs of the Red Sea - with sharks, manatees, dolphins, turtles, colorful reefs, and everything that makes for fantastic vacation dives. I could easily hang twice as many dives again and therefore decide not to let it pass four years again until I return to this unique underwater world next time.

FAQs Egypt: The most important questions and answers about the land of the pharaohs

In particular, those who are on holiday in Egypt for the first time certainly have many unanswered questions about the holiday in the land of the pharaohs. I have put together the most important questions and answers about your Egypt vacation for you.

When is the best time to visit Sharm El Sheikh?

The answer is very simple: always, just not in midsummer - because in midsummer temperatures can rise to 50 degrees Celsius. From the end of September to the beginning of May, however, the temperatures are warm to hot (around 33 to 35 degrees Celsius), but very bearable due to the low humidity and the constantly refreshing wind. At the end of October, temperatures drop on the Sinai Peninsula in Egypt.

During the day, despite a lot of sun, they barely reach 32 degrees and at night the values can drop to 23 degrees. Reason enough for many Egyptians to put on a thick jacket. For Europeans, however, the guaranteed sunshine and consistently high temperatures have an almost magical appeal and make the small holiday resort on the Red Sea an attractive and healing experience for body and mind.

Where is the most beautiful place in Egypt?

Egypt has many beautiful corners that are suitable for sun-seeking beach vacationers as well as for adventurers, explorers and water sports enthusiasts. Divers and kite surfers in particular love the Red Sea. Some of the most beautiful places to visit in Egypt include:
1. Sharm El Sheikh
2. Marsa Allam
3. Makadi Bay
4. El Quseir
5. El Gouna
6. Cairo

8. Hurghada
This is my personal ranking. Cairo is a bit out of the way, as it is of course difficult to compare the metropolis with the small holiday resorts.

Which hotels in Egypt are recommended?

In Egypt there is a very long list of recommended hotels, most of which are located on the Red Sea and are suitable for fans of beach vacations, diving vacations and wellness vacations. I have stayed in numerous Egypt hotels over the years and so far I can recommend every single one of them:

Where is it better Hurghada or Sharm el Sheikh?

When it comes to the resorts all alone, I think Sharm El Sheikh is far more beautiful and better than Hurghada. The place is much cleaner, looks much more well-kept and is much quieter and more dignified. Hurghada is very busy and loud. However, the region around Hurghada is beautiful and there is an incredible amount to do and experience along the coast - in holiday resorts such as El Gouna, Makadi Bay, Safaga, El Quseir and Marsa Alam. Excursions are only possible to a limited extent on the Sinai, as some parts of the peninsula - especially the northern part - are considered unsafe.

Is it dangerous to travel to Hurghada?

According to the Foreign Office, there is still a certain risk of terrorist attacks across Egypt. However, it is very, very safe in the Red Sea resorts. The risk for Hurghada is rather low. During a vacation in Hurghada, one should rather beware of the typical dangers of vacation: intrusive vendors, pickpockets and rotten food can quickly spoil the holiday pleasure. Basically, you can feel very safe on site.

The information from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs is the best source of information for German citizens and one should act accordingly. Incidentally, the same applies to the other travel destinations on the Red Sea in Egypt.

What does Sharm el Sheikh mean?

Sharm El Sheikh (also Sharm el Sheikh or Sharm El Sheikh) means something like Bay of the Sheikh. The place is located on a beautiful bay - Naama Bay - which really deserves its name.

Until when does the travel warning from the Foreign Office apply to Egypt?

As of October 2023, there is only a partial travel warning for Egypt, which does not affect the holiday resorts on the Red Sea. That's what it says Foreign Office: “There is still an increased risk of terrorist attacks across the country. […] A warning is given against travel to the north of the Sinai Peninsula, the Egyptian-Israeli border area (with the exception of Taba) and remote areas of the Sahara. Unaccompanied, individual excursions and overland trips in the south of the Sinai Peninsula are not recommended. Spontaneous vacationers should keep an eye out for super last minute offers, where the departure takes place immediately after booking. In this way, up to 70 percent of the travel price can be saved.

Egypt is one of the most popular package travel destinations - so yes, you can travel to Egypt as a package. This is my personal ranking. Cairo is a bit out of the way, as it is of course difficult to compare the metropolis with the small holiday resorts.

When is it the windiest in Egypt?

It's almost always windy on the Red Sea in Egypt - I've rarely seen the Red Sea with little wind. The period from October to May should be less windy. However, I cannot confirm that. So far I have had a lot of wind at the Red Sea in Egypt in every season.

Where are the most beautiful house reefs in Egypt?

The most beautiful house reef for diving and snorkeling that I have seen in Egypt is at the Mövenpick Resort El Quseir. The who's who of marine life can be found there - dolphins and whale sharks also stop by here from time to time. One of the most beautiful coral gardens in the Red Sea is also located here.

Where are the best places to go snorkeling in Egypt?

For snorkeling I would recommend the Three Corners Equinox near Marsa Alam. There I was able to see the Marsa Alam manatee while snorkeling. Dolphins can also be seen snorkeling here. And the underwater landscape also has a lot to offer in other ways. Basically, you can snorkel very well along the entire Red Sea coast in Egypt.

Can you bathe in Egypt in winter?

Yes, swimming in Egypt is excellent in winter. In the pools of the hotels anyway. And even the Red Sea still reaches stately temperatures in winter, which are suitable for swimming on the numerous beaches. If you want something more comfortable, you can pay up to 200 euros per night for an upscale hotel. A good middle class hotel can be booked for around 100 euros per night. All-inclusive services are often available for small surcharges.

Why not go to Egypt?

I really don't know why you shouldn't travel to Egypt at the moment. You can really have a good and cheap holiday in the land of the pharaohs. The country tends to be very safe, even if there is a risk of terrorist attacks – like in many places in the world, including in Europe. As of August 2021, there is only a partial travel warning for Egypt, which does not affect the holiday resorts on the Red Sea. That's what it says at Foreign Office: “There is still an increased risk of terrorist attacks across the country.

These are mostly directed against Egyptian security authorities, but occasionally also against foreign targets and citizens. […] Warnings are given against traveling to the north of the Sinai Peninsula, the Egyptian-Israeli border area (with the exception of Taba) and remote areas of the Sahara. Unaccompanied, individual excursions and overland trips in the south of the Sinai Peninsula are not recommended. […] We warn against traveling to remote areas of the Sahara, including the border areas with Libya and Sudan. ”There is no travel warning for holiday resorts on the western Red Sea such as Hurghada, Safaga and Marsa Alam.

Is Hurghada expensive?

No, Hurghada is not expensive, but rather cheap. There are a lot of hotels there and a correspondingly large selection that ensures rather low prices. However, Hurghada is also a typical mass tourism destination that I cannot recommend for discerning holidaymakers.

Is Hurghada beautiful?

Hurghada also has beautiful corners - for example the markets and the marina. However, Hurghada is also a typical mass tourism destination that I cannot recommend for discerning holidaymakers. Personally, I don't think Hurghada is beautiful. But the region is very beautiful and the holiday resorts nearby: El Gouna, Makadi Bay, Soma Bay, Sharm El Naga, Safaga, El Quseir and Marsa Alam are really nice places that can be reached via the airport of Hurghada.

Where is Marsa Alam?

Marsa Alam is located south of Hurghada on the western Red Sea. The small town has its own airport and is known for its manatees and dolphins, among other things. Marsa Alam can also be reached from the north of Hurghada, for example by a two-hour drive from Hurghada via Safaga via El Quseir to Marsa Alam.

How safe is it in Marsa Alam

There is a comparatively low crime rate in Marsa Alam. And otherwise I felt very safe in the region. The hotels and resorts are surrounded by police stations and have their own guards who will not let strangers into the hotel. Places like Port Ghalib and Marsa Alam can also feel very safe. One gets the feeling that the Egyptian government wants to give holidaymakers a strong sense of security - and they are succeeding.

Where is the best place to snorkel in Marsa Alam?

Basically, many hotels in the Marsa Alam region have their own house reef, where you can go snorkeling. It is also worth snorkeling in Marsa Mubarak Bay, where the manatee (the dugong) often resides. There are also secluded and secluded coves throughout the region where you can go diving and snorkeling. Your hotel's water sports center or diving schools are often familiar with these bays and usually offer day trips while you can sunbathe, swim, snorkel and dive.

What currency does Marsa Alam have?

The national currency in Egypt - and thus also in Marsa Alam - is the Egyptian pound (EGP). However, as a holidaymaker, you usually only need to exchange money in exceptional cases. Euros are also accepted in most shops.

How safe is Hurghada right now?

I would rate Hurghada as very safe at the moment. I was last there a few months ago and felt completely safe at all times. The place tends to be very safe, even though there is a risk of terrorist attacks, like in many places around the world, including in Europe.

Is Egypt dangerous for tourists?

I would rate the tourist regions in Egypt on the Red Sea - the western Red Sea and the Sinai Peninsula - as very safe. Security forces ensure that holidaymakers have a strong sense of security. As of August 2021, there is only a partial travel warning for Egypt, which does not affect the holiday resorts on the Red Sea. That's what it says at Foreign Office: “There is still an increased risk of terrorist attacks across the country.

Can a woman travel alone to Egypt?

In principle, you can also travel to Egypt alone as a woman. In this case, however, you should definitely follow the safety instructions and travel warnings of the Foreign Office mistake for Egypt. Experience has shown that as a woman, men very often approach and approach you. I can't say to what extent it can also lead to attacks. When in doubt, travel with a trusted group or book a package holiday at a hotel with transfers.

Can you move freely in Egypt?

Yes, in principle you can move freely in Egypt as a holidaymaker - if you want to. However, most tourists rarely leave the resort during their stay. You can book guided excursions to sights or to the cities in the hotel and theoretically you can move around freely. A few years ago I did Egypt tours on my own and only came into contact with very hospitable and helpful people. In this case, however, you should definitely follow the safety instructions and travel warnings of the Foreign Office mistake for Egypt.

How is Marsa Alam?

From the point of view of holidaymakers, the Marsa Alam region is meant more and less the small town itself. The area is definitely one of the most beautiful corners of Egypt, as there are some excellent hotels and resorts here on the Red Sea coast, secluded beaches, the Wadi el Gemal National Park and a particularly large number of marine animals such as sea turtles and the famous manatees. In addition, the region is particularly quiet and not as touristy as the area around Hurghada.

Where is the most beautiful place in Marsa Alam?

The entire Marsa Alam region is very beautiful and is certainly one of my favorite areas in Egypt, as it is particularly quiet and relaxed here. Personally, I find the area all the more beautiful the further south you go in the direction of the Wadi el Gemal National Park, as it tends to be quieter. There are beautiful beaches and where there are not so many snorkelers and divers around, the marine life increasingly comes out of their hiding places. I would therefore choose a hotel south of the city of Marsa Alam.

How long does it take to drive from Hurghada to Marsa Alam?

For the route from Hurghada to Marsa Alam Airport we needed 2 hours and 45 minutes with a modern minibus. The route is about 280 kilometers. The city itself is a little further south. The distance from Hurghada to the city of Marsa Alam is 350 kilometers and the driving time is about 3 hours and 30 minutes.

How is the weather in Marsa Alam in December?

The maximum temperatures in Marsa Alam in December are around 25 degrees Celsius. You can lie on the beach and swim during the day. It can get a bit chilly in the evenings. The night temperatures are a relaxed 17 degrees Celsius. Since the sun shines almost all year round on the Red Sea in Egypt, you can expect a lot of sunshine in December.
