The Maldives dream island of Coco Bodu Hithi is certainly one of the most beautiful and exclusive luxury retreats in the world. In the middle of the kingdom of islands, stress-stricken holidaymakers will find privacy, seclusion, peace and quiet in this paradisiacal place - and will be truly catapulted out of their everyday lives. I went on vacation to the dream island in the Indian Ocean and was able to discover a very unique place that only a few people can experience. My travel report from Coco Bodu Hithi can only begin to capture the atmosphere on the island. What sets this wonderful destination apart and where are there perhaps weak points? An experience report.
Imagine opening your eyes, hearing the soft hum of the air conditioning and the first thing you see from your bed in your more than 200 square meter beach villa is a huge terrace with a very private pool. You get up, jump immediately - optionally also like God created you, because you have maximum privacy, you have to get used to it first - into the cool water and look up through the palm tree tops into the bright blue sky.
Now you can let go, breathe deeply, forget the annoying everyday life at home and recharge your batteries while your perception sharpens. That's how I've experienced the Maldives and no other way - you just have to arrive, the rest happens in the Maldives holidays all by itself.

My Coco Bodu Hithi experiences - from the Beach Villa to the beach it is only a few meters
After a twelve-hour Arrival by plane via Dubai to Malé, a 45 minute journey by speed boat to the small dream island Coco Bodu Hithi and the first bumpy night of jetlag I wake up on a new day. As is so often the case, at first I don't even know where my head is and I'm really wobbly on my feet. But that's guaranteed to change very quickly.
Because you know: there is so much more to discover. You make yourself a coffee, go out onto the other terrace at the other end of the villa and along a path that is a few meters long and leads through a jungle bush to the Dream beach. An unidentifiable animal lets out a scream. There is rustling in the bushes. You're scared - but already wild here.
Bathing on Coco Bodu Hithi is the ultimate holiday feeling
You keep walking because you suspect that something very special awaits you at the end of the path through the thicket. You step out of the bushes onto the fine ones Sandy beach. It's so bright you have to screw up your eyes. You rub your eyes because what you see is just amazing. Do I dream or wake up? you ask yourself
The sun is so bright that you can hardly see anything without sunglasses. Your villa's own comfortable loungers are already ready on the beach. And in front of you lies the crystal clear, turquoise water of the lagoon of a dream island Maldives. This moment is so good, you wish it would never go away. Of course, I didn't hesitate for long and immediately jumped headfirst into the water. This reminds me very much of my visit to the sister island Coco Palm Dhuni Kolhu.
Coco Bodu Hithi – the epitome of vacation?
You immediately see: this is the epitome of Vacation - the vacation of a lifetime. This is exactly what happened to me when I went to Coco Bodu Hithi for the first time. My Coco Bodu Hithi experiences became life experiences that you cannot get in this form anywhere in the world. It's hard to describe: But traveling to the Maldives feels different to vacationing in the rest of the world. It may be because of the omnipresent sea. You will notice it on your first trip to the realm of the islands.

Travel report Coco Bodu Hithi - Bored on the dream island?
The resort islands in the Maldives are typically tiny and can be explored on foot in under an hour. And at the latest after holidaymakers have booked their trip, they ask themselves: What am I going to do for ten or 14 days on such a tiny island? As a die-hard Maldives fan, I often hear critical voices that claim: “It would be too boring for me.” I always answer: “You should tend to like the sea, then you will love the Maldives!”
Very few people ever come to the Maldives
To this day I still don't fully understand how anyone could think they would be bored in the Maldives. Visiting the small island state is still a real privilege: “Only very few people ever get the chance to travel to the Maldives in their lives,” explains resort manager Anthony Paton during the visit.
Only just over a hundred islands have hotels built on them - and the exclusive accommodations tend to have a lower number of guests. In 2019, only 2 million holidaymakers came to the Kingdom of the Islands and were spread across the entire island state (for comparison, Mallorca: 13,7 million tourists in 2019).
Exclusivity, privacy and seclusion are the words with which the Maldives can be described - not boredom. On the contrary, the time on the islands is always so precious that you don't want to waste it and you always have a little pressure to enjoy it as much as possible. The thought has occurred to me so often: I would like to spend my vacation in the Maldives as often as possible - as long as it still exists in its current form.
Holidays on Coco Bodu Hithi are definitely not boring
So should it be boring on a dream island? Such ideas can really only come up to someone who has never been here. Because exactly the opposite is the case: a luxury island like Coco Bodu Hithi is the perfect retreat to really let your mind wander and to catapult yourself completely out of everyday life. You simply forget the whole world around you in a very short time. If you then book one or two visits to the spa for a massage, you will be floating above things after just a few days.
The problem is more of a different, well-known one: time is running quickly - because there is more than enough to do. In the morning after getting up you first jump into the water - either in the pool right next to the bed, the whirlpool in the middle of the living room or the sea directly outside the villa. Those lucky enough to live in a Water Villa are even closer to the water. Alone with Swimming and you can easily spend the whole day sunbathing and swimming. But that most likely won't happen.
A typical day on Coco Bodu Hithi
Below I have put together a typical daily routine for you on Bodo Hithi. It becomes clear pretty quickly that it won't be boring on the Maldives island.
Time of day | Enterprise |
---|---|
7h | Wake up |
7.30 h | Morning swim in the lagoon |
8h | Breakfast in the restaurant |
9.30 h | Relaxing on the beach |
10 h | SUP tour around the island |
12 h | Lunch in the restaurant |
13 h | Midday nap by the private pool |
14.30 h | Snorkeling tour with marine biologist and turtle |
16 h | Massage appointment in the wellness area |
17 h | Siesta in the villa |
18.30 h | Dinner in the restaurant |
20 h | Drinks in the resort bar |
Of course, you have a number of opportunities to do something in the Maldives. I just wanted to show you as an example that it is not boring on the islands and that you can get around your day.

Leisure activities on a luxury vacation – What can you do on a Maldives island like Coco Bodo Hithi?
On a Maldives island like Coco Bodo Hithi you have a number of opportunities to pursue different leisure activities. First of all, at least two to three meals have to be taken in the excellent restaurants during the day - you should plan enough time for that alone. Second, you can spend an entire vacation in the Maldives doing stand up paddling and surfing.
Thirdly, a trip to the underwater world should definitely not be missed: the Maldives are the perfect place to Diving and snorkeling – if you weren't a diver before the trip, you definitely will be afterward.
Fourthly, you can get further training in marine biology together with the local marine biologist and get to know sea turtles and manta rays in detail - including a snorkeling trip to see the animals. As you can see, there are plenty of things to do in the Maldives and plenty of things to do on Coco Bodo Hithi.
1. Culinary experience: discover the restaurants on Coco Bodu Hithi
When you are on vacation on Coco Bodu Hithi, you can just eat all day every day. The breakfast in the main restaurant alone is so rich and extensive that you will be full for the whole day. I had a special smoothie made for me every day - highly recommended!
So that your stomach doesn't sag in the afternoon at the latest, you should definitely choose All Inclusive when booking to get the next meal at lunchtime. Otherwise, daily lunch can turn into expensive fun. And if you now think you can make it through from breakfast to dinner without food - that won't work. Maldives vacation makes you hungry.
However, you should definitely not overeat, because in the evening it really gets going: Most of the guests eat in the main restaurant. The food is Maldivian and European and leaves nothing to be desired. The buffet is often moved to the beach - what a great atmosphere.
If you like things a little more extravagant, you can also find a room in the sushi bar and really eat one of the best sushis I've ever eaten. For that alone I would travel to Coco Bodu Hithi again. Of course, the ingredients come directly from the sea on your doorstep. There is also an à la carte restaurant where the island's chef personally serves. Even here, however, you should plan the necessary change for the delicious dinner before your holiday - the Maldives are definitely something for culinary connoisseurs.
2. Swim, bathe, swim, swim, bathe - and start over
If there is one leisure activity that you cannot get enough of on Coco Bodu Hithi and the Maldives in general, it is bathing in the lagoon. The crystal-clear water is as warm as in the bathtub. It simply invites you to spend as much time as possible in it. Don't worry, you won't start to freeze in it even after an hour, because the water is really pleasantly warm. However, it only offers limited cooling from the heat.
For example, if you just want to relax on vacation, you can really spend the whole day sunbathing and swimming without a guilty conscience. Alternatively, you can chill out in the whirlpool in your room or simply use the villa's own pool with plenty of privacy. One thing is certain: on your Maldives vacation on Coco Bodu Hithi, you are guaranteed to spend a lot of time in the water.
3. Stand up paddling, surfing, sailing and jet skiing
Who is in Maldives beach vacation However, contrary to expectations, it is boring, should give the local water sports center a try. I was there every day and did my laps on the water in the turquoise blue lagoon sharks, turtles and fishing turned under me. Stand Up Paddling in the Maldives is pretty much the non-plus-ultra for SUP fans. In tropical waters this is just a lot more fun than in the domestic lakes in Europe.
I saw my daily Maldives SUP tour as a workout to stay reasonably fit during the time on site. Because in the open to go jogging is only possible to a very limited extent - if you really go through all the paths, you get maybe three kilometers together.
In addition, Coco Bodu Hithi's water sports center is also a good place to get quick and easy access to water skiing and jet skiing. In Germany it is often very awkward to practice these sports. In the Maldives, on the other hand, you can whiz across the water on a jet ski within five minutes - a great experience because you can be on uninhabited islands in no time.
4. Diving on Coco Bodu Hithi: sharks on every dive
Diving and snorkeling is one of the ultimate pastimes on a Maldives vacation. This is also the case with Coco Bodu Hithi. One of the main reasons to go diving in the Indian Ocean is because of the sharks in the Maldives. Basically, you can do the typical ones on almost every dive Maldives sharks like watching reef sharks and many other species and with a bit of luck you might even see a whale shark.
Another highlight are the manta rays, which can often be seen in the Maldives atolls. I've already been to the sister island Coco Palm Dhuni Kolhu diving and was simply more than enthusiastic about the underwater world of the island state.
You really have to look for marine animals at many diving spots around the world - in the Maldives you will see an animal almost every dive that you would look for in other places for ages. In Thailand, for example, it is rare to see a shark today.
The traditional diving dhoni takes you daily from Bodu Hithi to the most beautiful diving spots in the area. If you are looking for spectacular encounters with marine animals, this is the place for you: In addition to sharks, turtles and manta rays, there are also numerous eagle rays, triggerfish, napoleons and many smaller ones sea animals, which you can observe on the reef.
Unfortunately, many reefs in the Maldives are affected by coral bleaching. That's why you should be prepared for the fact that there won't be any colorful coral reefs to see. There are lots of fish and marine mammals such as dolphins - so every stay in the Maldives can be an unforgettable one Diving Holidays .
The dhoni can swing quite a bit when the waves are blowing - that's why divers shouldn't forget their travel tablets. I speak from experience. Otherwise the boats are really great. You have a lot of space to get dressed and after the dive you can lie comfortably on the upper deck (roof) in the sun.
Dive Ocean Maldives Bodu Hithi (Bodu Hithi Dive Center)
The local dive center Dive Ocean Bodu Hithi (Bodu Hithi Dive Center) is a PADI 5 Stars Gold Palm Resort dive center that operates super professionally and to the highest standards. I did some great dives with the team - in particular, the deputy base manager Taka from Japan accompanied me on my diving tours and showed me a lot of the underwater world.
In total, the diving school visits more than 30 dive sites - including well-known spots such as Washimas Thila and the great house reef of Coco Bodu Hithi, where I have done numerous snorkeling tours and dives.
Coco Dive – diving center equipment
The DiveOcean Dive Center appears to no longer exist - apparently the resort now offers diving in-house under the name “Coco Dive”. Here you will find one Factsheet in addition. And here these Price list.

5. Discover marine biology and learn all about flora and fauna
On vThere are many Maldives resort islands marine biologistswho go snorkeling and diving with the vacationers. Not for fun, of course, but to bring the guests closer to the marine world and to gain a better understanding of it Wildlife to wake up.
More than anything else you can get from the Maldives marine biologists im Conversation and learn everything about the flora and fauna of the Indian Ocean in lectures. Often these biologists also carry out aid projects for turtles and manta rays, in which they involve the holidaymakers. A really exciting experience with real added value for the vacation.
6. Visit Maldives island island
From many resort islands, including Coco Bodu Hithi, you can visit a local island and get to know the authentic Maldivian life there. The resort islands are usually very isolated and only visited by holidaymakers and staff. If you want to see the real life in the Maldives, you should visit such an island or the capital Malé in a day trip.
It is particularly fascinating that in these villages on the islands just normal life plays - with schools, leisure activities such as football and shopping in the supermarket. Many of the islanders only have to leave the island to work.
For several years now, travelers have also been able to vacation on the islands of the locals. One finds Maldives guest houses on local islandswhich are usually located somewhere between a holiday home, hostel and resort as accommodation. However, experts recommend this type of island vacation only for divers, as there are severe restrictions, especially when swimming and visiting the beach.
7. Whale shark, manta ray and dolphin tours
You don't have to be a diver to get into the water with the large marine animals. You can on one Dolphin Tour go or with Whale Sharks and snorkel manta rays. Provided it is the season and the animals are roaming the area.
Especially Dolphins can be found all year round. You can usually meet the bottlenose dolphins on many excursions - not just on dolphin tours. Often they just drop by "accidentally".

Coco Bodu Hithi Resort - Maldives: the most important information at a glance
The Coco Bodu Hithi Resort in the Maldives is located in the North Malé Atoll about 45 minutes from the capital's airport on a small island with a large lagoon and a really great house reef for divers and snorkelers. This island offers a total of 100 villas - these include the Island Villas, which are located on the island, as well as the Water Villas, Escape Water Villas and Coco Residences (the latter being the highest category).
You can find fine dining on Coco Bodu Hithi in five different restaurants - the main restaurant Air, Aqua, Latitude, Stars and the sushi restaurant Tsuki. Some of the restaurants have already won prizes and awards. There is also a wine bar and of course a beach bar. Every year, Michelin-starred chefs come to the island for special culinary events.
In addition to these great accommodations and culinary delights, you will of course find a large and award-winning wellness center on site, where you can get massages from professional staff. Or you just relax in the Sauna, in the whirlpool or work out in the fitness center.
Travel pictures Coco Bodu Hithi (Maldives) – impressions of the dream island
Thunder in Paradise – the weaknesses of Coco Bodu Hithi?
Of course, a holiday on a remote dream island like Coco Bodu Hithi also has a few disadvantages. The island is not only in the five-star luxury segment, but also in a corresponding price range. One should therefore look in time for offers and specials for the island. There are also discounts in the off-season in the Maldives.
Second, you're on a tiny one Maldives resort island pretty much in the middle of nowhere and, if necessary, has to take a long tour to get back to inhabited areas. The ability to buy everyday goods such as sunscreen and such things is also severely limited.
But this applies to pretty much all Maldives islands. In addition, the resort has been around for a few years and is no longer that fresh in places. A small general overhaul will certainly be necessary in the next few years.

Travel report Coco Bodu Hithi: paradisiacal island for a perfect Maldives holiday
My conclusion
However, the described disadvantages are measured at a very high level: All this does not change the fact that the island of Coco Bodu Hithi is the epitome of paradise and the ultimate holiday destination. The island is beautiful and a destination that has no equal.
We are not new to the Maldives. We are already on vacation Coco Palm Dhuni Kolhu (travel report) made and went diving and snorkelling around the small, paradisiacal island. Coco Bodu Hithi is a Luxury resort, which simply brings joy. Both in the Beach Villa and in the Water Bungalow.
Although it is smaller and cheaper, we liked the Beach Villa even a little better than the even more luxurious Water Villas. The villas in the jungle simply offer incredible privacy and a particularly exotic ambience. A Maldives holiday on Coco Bodu Hithi is certainly not something you experience every day. We can hardly wait to come back as soon as possible.
