In South Florida you can expect wonderful beaches such as Miami Beach and Hollywood Beach, art and culture in some world-famous museums, excellent hotels and a huge wealth of sights and leisure activities. In my travel report about Miami with many valuable tips, recommendations and my personal experiences, I will introduce you to this unique city in more detail.

Miami is one of the baddest Placesthat I have ever visited. Sorry for the colloquialism, but that sums it up best. After a fifteen-hour journey, we landed at Miami International Airport, picked up a rental car at the counter and - more or less sleep-deprived - made our way through the traffic of this mega-metropolis.

What a crazy and iconic city, I can tell you. Who doesn't know her from TV? A real megacity that stretches from here to the horizon. And which immediately captivates you from the first second. After we arrived, I was thrilled, amazed – and overwhelmed by the charms. In my detailed Travelogue I would like to introduce you to Miami with all its facets and give you valuable tips and personal experiences for your unforgettable stay.

Miami is that spectacular.

We reside in Hollywood – right on the beach

After an adventurous first drive through Miami's city traffic, we reach our accommodation, which I stayed at HolidayCheck* had booked. We looked for relatively cheap accommodation on Hollywood Beach. And it's right on the promenade in front of the beach. This is really great tennis. All you have to do is walk out the door and you're right on one of the most beautiful stretches of beach in Florida.

Hollywood Beach is relatively centrally located – and an attraction in itself. Photo: Sascha Tegtmeyer

On Hollywood Beach there are many cafés and restaurants, a very lively nightlife and in the hinterland there are many good middle-class residential areas that are good for a short walk. A really great place and comparatively central place if you are in Miami. From here you can reach Miami Beach by rental car in 30 minutes at the latest - which is really damn fast for the standards of this megacity.

The best way to explore Miami in all its diversity is by renting a car. But it is definitely a challenge – even for experienced drivers. Photo: Sascha Tegtmeyer

We tried to see as much of this incredibly large and beautiful city as possible - to visit as many sights as possible and try out leisure activities. But honestly? You need a whole year for this. In my travel report about Miami I try to convey what we experienced there in the most helpful and useful way possible for you.

My enthusiasm for Miami can hardly be expressed in words. The personal experiences I had during my stay in this stark megacity have left an indelible mark on my memory. If you want a real adventure then Miami is definitely the place for you. Anything is possible in Miami, and that's what makes this city so unique and exciting.

Despite the size, I immediately felt at home

From the first minute I felt safe and at home in Miami. Despite its immense size, the city exudes a family and warm-hearted atmosphere. Away from the impressive skyline, the pulsating traffic and the lively crowds, there is a special magic in the air that makes it easy to feel at home straight away. Maybe it's the endless summer, the picturesque palm trees that line the streets, or the sheer abundance of options that Miami offers to its visitors.

I explored Miami with full commitment - and in my travel report I will introduce you to some of the most important sights. Travel Report Miami Tips & Experiences

I tried to gain as much experience as possible

In my Miami travel report I give an insight into the numerous attractions that I visited myself, but of course I wasn't able to explore every corner of this dazzling city. So even the beautiful Miami Beach, where you can bask in the sun and swim in the turquoise waves, remains a place that screams for more. My desire to return and discover more of this breathtaking city has continued ever since.

How do you find a start in the giant city?

I had mine Hotel directly on Hollywood Beach – just north of the center. And after the long journey with a flight and car ride, I spent two days on Hollywood Beach. The beaches in Miami are iconic – with the lifeguard houses, surf boards and palm trees. You can take relaxing walks on the beach and shop and snack on the promenade.

If you're looking for a start to your Miami trip, I also recommend a walk or boat ride in Biscayne Bay or a visit to Key Biscayne - the beautiful island south of South Beach, which is connected to the mainland by a long, impressive bridge .

My Miami Tips: How to get started in this megacity?! Photo: Sascha Tegtmeyer Travelogue Miami tips & experiences
My Miami Tips: How to get started in this megacity?! Photo: Sascha Tegtmeyer

We started off relaxed with Key Biscayne

In my opinion, Key Biscayne is one of the most beautiful areas in Miami. Biscayne Bay is also home to some of the city's best hotels and restaurants. There you can acclimatise and immediately have your first Miami highlight. The island is well connected to the city via the highway and the long bridge and can be reached relatively quickly.

Key Biscayne with the iconic lighthouse is one of Miami's top attractions. Travel Report Miami Tips & Experiences

Once you're a little more familiar with the city and its customs, South Beach is a place to go. This is where the best nightlife in the city takes place. And of course, no trip to Miami would be complete without spending some time on South Beach with a beach chair and umbrella - in true American style. And there really are so many of them in southeast Florida.

Upon arrival in Miami, I hired a car (booked in advance via the Internet) which I kept for the entire three weeks for relatively little money. Travel Report Miami Tips & Experiences

We were gripped by the desire to explore

After a few days of acclimatization, the... love of discovery packed. Once you've gotten used to being stuck in traffic on the city highway and dealing with the traffic chaos, you'll know how to use the parking meters and get used to the sheer vast distances you have to travel every day you really feel like Miami is yours. and so we really looked at many corners of the city and tried to get as much out of our trip as possible.

Miami travel report – my to-do recommendations for your trip

Below I present a carefully curated selection of general Miami recommendations that will give you a first taste of the sheer wealth of options available to you in this exciting metropolis. Be inspired by the diversity and allure of this vibrant city and get ready to immerse yourself in a world of adventure, discovery and unforgettable experiences.

1. Be sure to take a rental car

I wouldn't know how to get around Florida without a rental car. When I arrived in Miami, I took a rental car (booked in advance online), which I kept for the entire three weeks for relatively little money. Without a rental car, you can hardly explore Miami - let alone southern Florida.

I used it to see the Miami sights and also explored other parts of Florida before returning to Miami after three weeks - and then taking the Lufthansa Airbus A380 to Frankfurt am Main. Everything went smoothly with the rental car.

2. Sunbathing and swimming on beautiful beaches

There are so many beaches in the Miami area that you won't know which one you should visit first. Since we had a wonderful beach right in front of our hotel in Hollywood Beach, we didn't have to go far to go swimming. But that didn't stop us from looking at other local beaches.

For example, we went to the beaches of Fort Lauderdale, South Beach and Key Biscayne. We also highly recommend the North Beach Oceanside Park, which is really beautiful and idyllic. And also Surfside is another charming place known as Miami's Uptown Beach Town.

And fans of nudism will also get their money's worth in Miami: For those looking for something more adventurous, there is Haulover Beach Park, the only public nudist beach in Miami.

3. Experience art and culture

Miami has a particularly active and diverse art scene that you should definitely explore in one way or another during your trip. Even if you're not a big fan of art, you should at least check out the Wynwood Walls, which is a massive club art gallery that, among other things, has transformed warehouse walls into colorful works of art. If you're an art fan, you can get the most out of Miami:

  • The Perez Art Museum Miami (PAMM) is a museum of superlatives. It opened in 2013 in a spectacular new building on Biscayne Boulevard designed by renowned architects Herzog & de Meuron. The museum features works by international artists of the 20th and 21st centuries, with a focus on the art of America.
  • The Wynwood Walls are one of Miami's most popular attractions. They are a huge outdoor gallery created by real estate developer Tony Goldman. Since 2009, renowned street artists such as Shepard Fairey, Os Gêmeos and JR have been transforming the walls of warehouses into colorful works of art. There are also numerous bars, restaurants and boutiques in the area.
  • The Vizcaya Museum and Gardens is a living relic from the past. It was built between 1914 and 1922 as the winter residence of industrialist James Deering and is designed in the style of an Italian Renaissance villa. The museum houses an exquisite collection of European artworks and antiques from the 15th to 19th centuries. When you visit the museum, be sure not to miss the gardens that surround the museum.
  • The Bass Museum of Art is a modern art museum in the heart of Miami Beach. It was founded in 1963 in a former library building from 1930 and reopened in 2017 after a major renovation. The museum presents works by important artists such as Ugo Rondinone, Sylvie Fleury and Erwin Wurm.
  • The Lock & Load Museum is a museum with a difference. It is located in a shooting range and displays an extensive and amazing collection of historical and modern firearms.

4. Immerse yourself in the nightlife

“Welcome to the city where the heat is on” sings Will Smith in his song about Miami. and once again we were lucky to have our hotel on Hollywood Beach. There are wonderful opportunities to go out during your Miami vacation. But of course you can also take a taxi and have a blast in many places in the city.

An iconic place for this is of course South Beach - but it is also extremely expensive there and the open-air bars in Wynwood are definitely recommended. There you can party the night away in an extremely tropical atmosphere.

5. Miami Restaurants

If you're a food lover like us, you can really get the most out of Miami. And I'm not talking about fast food, which you can of course get on every corner. There's a reason I gained a lot of weight in over three weeks in Florida. If you're always visiting Miami, you should really check out some excellent restaurants.

The selection of excellent restaurants with very different tastes such as Cuban, Mexican or Colombian, but of course also international and fusion cuisine, is so large that you can hardly keep track of it. You can also find some recommendations here TripAdvisor.

Miami's sights and tips - an incredible amount to discover

For my Miami travel report I explored many corners of the world-famous metropolis - but by no means all of them. That's good - so I have a reason to return to this great city as soon as possible. There are so many incredible sights to discover in Miami that it's hard to list them all. There is something for everybody. I have put together the most important Miami sights and tips for you that you should not miss.

1.Hollywood BeachMiami

I really loved Hollywood Beach. This area is not only one of the most beautiful beaches in all of Miami, but also a district full of vibrancy and culture. You will find numerous restaurants, cafés, bars and clubs here, and you can go to the promenade – the Boardwalk – Jog, cycling, going for a walk and just strolling.

The promenade is a whopping 4 kilometers long. And is lined with palm trees, as you would imagine from Florida. We really had a good time on Hollywood Beach. Although the district is not completely in the center of Miami, it is an excellent starting point for all discovery tours by rental car.

2. Perez Art Museum Miami

If you love art and culture, Miami is the right place for you. The city is simply a huge treasure chest for art lovers, with so many different museums, art, exhibitions and outdoor art to see. You could easily book a two-week art trip to Miami.

One of the most beautiful and worth seeing museums in Miami is the Pérez Art Museum, where you can admire modern and contemporary art. In this museum you will find collections of the great artists such as Pablo Picasso, Henri Matisse and Salvador Dali. The building in which this exhibition house is located is a sight in itself - it was designed by award-winning architects and combines modern and tropical style.

3.Key Biscayne

As you can tell, I have a bit of a crush on the large island that lies south of South Beach and is connected to Miami via the Rickenbacker Causeway and bridge. One of the highlights is the Bill Baggs Cape Florida State Park, which is one of the most beautiful beaches in the USA. Here you can relax, swim or snorkel on a kilometer-long sandy beach.

Another attraction is the historic Cape Florida Lighthouse, which was built in 1825 and is the oldest standing lighthouse in Florida. If you're in the mood for a little more action, head to Crandon Park. For example, you can play tennis, play golf, cycle or skate. Or check out Stiltsville – a town made up of seven wooden houses on stilts built in the 1930s.

4. Vizcaya Museum and Gardens

A visit to Miami isn't complete without a stop at the Vizcaya Museum and Gardens. This impressive early 20th century property was once the winter home of James Deering, the American industrialist and conservationist who built it. Today it is a museum that transports visitors to another time. You should definitely take a tour of the magnificent gardens too, otherwise you'll miss the best part.

5.South Beach

South Beach is the part of Miami most familiar from television. You've seen Miami in numerous films that take place in the city. And it is definitely one of the most beautiful parts of the city. We went there several times to go for a walk, eat, lie on the beach and swim. I'm not usually a fan of walking, but South Beach is so exciting that there's a lot to see.

People stroll on the beach promenade, skateboard and in the expensive restaurants next to it it's a matter of seeing and being seen, while the expensive sports cars are in front of the door. As a tourist, Germany feels pretty small.

What to do in South Beach

  • Start your day with a walk along the broad beach promenade, which stretches from South Pointe Park to 23rd Street. Here you can enjoy the fresh sea breeze, watch the joggers and cyclists, and admire the famous pastel-colored Art Deco buildings that have made South Beach iconic.
  • If you're in the mood for shopping, this is the Lincoln Road the perfect place for you. This pedestrian street is lined with shops, galleries and cafés.
  • You are spoiled for choice for a culinary break. South Beach offers a wide variety Restaurants, from international cuisine to regional specialties.
  • When the sun goes down, South Beach turns into a party zone. You'll find plenty on Washington Avenue Clubs, bars and lounges, which offer something for every musical taste.
  • If you are interested in art and culture, then you should Art Deco Historic District do not miss. This area includes more than 800 buildings from the 1930s, which have a unique feel with their characteristic shapes and colors.

6.Wynwood Walls

The Wynwood Walls are a unique art project in Miami that you shouldn't miss. Here you can admire the colorful and creative murals by over 50 international street artists who have turned a former industrial area into a vibrant urban art district. The works of art are regularly renewed, so you will discover something new every time you visit.

7. Miami Seaquarium

Of course, Miami also has a huge oceanarium – the Miami Seaquarium. You can basically spend an entire day there and have the opportunity to see sea creatures up close. You can admire dolphins, killer whales, sea lions, manatees, sharks, rays and many other animals. However, as a diver and lover of the sea, I am not a fan of dolphins, sharks and killer whales in captivity. That's why we avoided the oceanarium.

8.Jungle Island

Jungle Island is located on an island in Miami's Biscayne Bay. It is a zoological park where you can see, touch and feed some of the rarest and most exotic birds, reptiles and mammals from around the world. You can befriend a lemur, pet a tiger, or have a parrot sit on your shoulder if you want.

9. Fairchild Tropical Botanical Garden

The Fairchild Tropical Botanical Garden is more than just a place to relax and escape the hustle and bustle of the city. It is one of the most beautiful tropical botanical gardens in the world and is home to over 83 species of tropical flowering trees, shrubs and palms on 740 hectares. It is also a center for research and conservation of the Caribbean's fascinating biodiversity.

10. Little HavanaMiami

If you are in Miami, a visit to Little Havana is a must. The district is the center of Cuban culture in Miami and an important destination for every visitor to the city. In this colorful district you can embark on a culinary, artistic and musical journey to Cuba.

Walk down Calle Ocho, the neighborhood's most famous street, and admire the colorful murals and street art. Visit the Tower Theater, a legendary 1920s Art Deco cinema that now serves as a cultural center. Or explore the Little Havana Cigar Factory, where you can watch cigars being made.

11.DowntownMiami

Downtown Miami is home to the city's impressive high-rises. Enjoy the breathtaking city skyline while sipping a drink at one of the rooftop bars. Dance the night away in one of the many nightclubs. Explore Bayfront Park, a 32-acre urban park with gardens, fountains and walking paths. Or – highly recommended – take a ride on the Metromover, a free elevated train that runs through downtown Miami.

12.Miami Design District

And again something for art lovers: the Miami Design District. This is a district full of art galleries and designer studios, flanked by shops, restaurants and nightclubs. The Miami Design District was redesigned by developer Craig Robins in the early 2000s and has become one of the city's most popular destinations.

13.Coconut Grove

Coconut Grove was founded back in 1825 by a diverse mix of personalities, including pioneers, sailors, artists, nature lovers, millionaires and intellectuals. The neighborhood is also located on Biscayne Bay. Art galleries, shops, restaurants and cafés await you on site. Attractions include Villa Vizcaya, a magnificent Spanish Colonial-style mansion from the early 20th century, Plymouth Congregational Church, a historic church built in 1917, and the Coconut Grove Playhouse, an old theater that hosted the 1956 U.S. The premiere of Waiting for Godot was performed.

14.Everglades

Now let's move on to the sights that are just outside of Miami. While the previous ones were all in the city area and can be reached relatively quickly by rental car, you have to take at least a day trip to the Everglades or plan a stay of several days. In any case, you shouldn't miss the Everglades, a huge subtropical wetland - the largest in North America. The Everglades have a total area of over 6000 square kilometers.

We traveled to the Everglades in a rental car and hiked on some adventure trails there. You can really see a lot there. You can observe alligators from a safe distance at numerous stations. There are extra parking spaces there. So you don't necessarily have to go on one of the well-known airboat tours - but of course you can. There are also plenty of animals to see there such as flamingos, manatees, pelicans and snakes.

15. Florida Keys

We took a trip to the Florida Keys from Miami - more precisely, from Hollywood Beach. You definitely shouldn't miss this on your vacation. This was one of the most beautiful excursions we took on the entire trip. You should leave as early as possible and first drive straight through the Overseas Highway to Key West. This means you are definitely ahead of the daily rush of visitors.

I would highly recommend planning a night or two in the Keys. However, they are incredibly expensive. That's why you should look at Key West on the first day and choose your accommodation closer to the mainland - for example on Key Largo. This is significantly cheaper.

There is a lot to discover in Key West. The island is very small and you can hardly miss it: the Hemingway House, the Truman Little White House and the famous Duval Street with its bars and shops. Also, don't miss the sunset at Mallory Square.

FAQs Miami - the most important questions and answers about your vacation in Florida

If you're planning on visiting this vibrant metropolis, you'll probably have a lot of questions and perhaps some concerns. But don't worry, we have put together the most important information and answers about your trip to Miami for you.

How many days should you plan for Miami?

I would plan at least a week for Miami to see a lot and also spend a few relaxing days at the beach. Miami is a popular vacation destination for many people, so planning ahead is important. Depending on what you want to see and do during your stay in Miami, you should plan at least a couple of days. If you want to explore the city and get a feel for the culture, four to five days is a good amount of time. If you plan to spend most of your time at the beach, six to eight days is probably a better choice. Whatever your plans, be sure to leave enough time to enjoy everything Miami has to offer.

Where is the best place in Miami?

There is no definitive answer to this question because everyone has different preferences. However, popular spots in Miami include South Beach, Hollywood Beach, Key Biscayne, Little Havana, and Wynwood. These areas offer a unique experience and are definitely worth a visit if you have the time.

How much money do you need in Miami?

Again, it depends on your individual needs and preferences. Miami is a relatively expensive city, so it's important to plan your budget accordingly. If you eat out often, live in luxurious accommodations, and do a lot of shopping, you'll need to set aside a significant amount of money. However, if you're willing to live in more modest accommodations and eat at cheaper restaurants, you can manage on a smaller budget. It's important to do your research before you travel so you have an accurate idea of how much money you'll need during your stay in Miami.

When is the best time to travel to Miami?

The best time of year to visit Miami depends on your personal preferences. If you want to enjoy the warm weather and spend time outdoors, the best time to travel is between December and April. However, if you want to avoid the crowds and take advantage of the lower prices, you should take advantage of the low season (May to November). Keep in mind that June through November is hurricane season. So if you are afraid of bad weather, you should not travel during this period. Ultimately, the best time to visit Miami is whenever you can get the most out of your trip!

What is there to do in Miami?

Some of the most popular things to do in Miami include visiting the beaches, exploring the street art scene in Wynwood, visiting Little Havana and people-watching on South Beach. There is no definitive answer to this as everyone has different preferences. Popular places to visit in Miami include South Beach, Hollywood Beach, Key Biscayne, Little Havana, and Wynwood. These areas offer a unique experience and are definitely worth a visit if you have the time.

Where not to go in Miami?

There are a few areas in Miami that you should avoid if possible. These include Overtown, Liberty City and North Miami Beach. While not necessarily dangerous, these areas can be quite seedy and not representative of the rest of the city. If you are in one of these areas, be aware of your surroundings and stay in well-lit areas.

Where is the best place to stay in Miami?

The best place to stay in Miami depends on your budget and preferences. Luxury hotels can be found in all areas of the city, but if you're looking for something cheaper, stay in North Beach or Midtown. These areas are less crowded and offer a more relaxed atmosphere. No matter where you stay in Miami, you will definitely have an enjoyable and memorable experience.

Travel report Miami - tips & experiences for the adventurer metropolis?

My conclusion

In my travel report about Miami I tried to give you a little bit more insight into the world-famous city in south Florida. But that's difficult. This metropolis is truly a mega city and is hard to grasp - neither when you are there nor when you are back home and trying to write something about it. Exactly.

Prepare your trip as best as possible

For this reason, you should prepare your trip as much as possible. You will suffer from acute sensory overload when you get there because there is just so much to see and cover, because it is so busy and crowded everywhere and because you will feel the urge to see everything when you get there. At least that's what happened to me and that didn't necessarily make our stay in Miami relaxing. But it was incredibly exciting. I really want to go there again.

Ideal for adventurers

I think you can have a relaxing beach vacation in Miami. But first and foremost, Miami is a place for people who like hustle and bustle - for adventurers, art lovers, gourmets, active vacationers and outdoor fans, tropical destination lovers, night owls and explorers.

Take it easy

I would suggest you take it easy when you get there and give yourself enough time for everything you look at. You just can't see everything - unless maybe your trip lasts four weeks. Find out what you want to see beforehand and look at it in detail. Try to be as alert and mindful as possible despite all the distractions that may exist. This is my biggest advice for you, otherwise your Miami trip after your vacation will seem like a beautiful dream.
