Getting to Phuket – This is how you get to the island

by

If you are planning your vacation on Phuket, you definitely have to think about how to get there. The path to paradise can be difficult - the journey to the wonderful holiday island takes up to 20 hours. You can come comfortably by plane or, adventurously, by intercity bus. What options do you have for getting to Phuket? What do you absolutely have to pay attention to? I have put together my personal experiences and useful tips for you if you want to visit the travel destination.

I've arrived in Phuket by long-haul flight, taxi, domestic flight, speedboat and even a sailboat. As you can see, there are a number of options for getting to Phuket. You're probably sitting down with that right now travel planning for your Vacation apart and wondering what options you have to get to Phuket from Europe or the USA. Or you are currently in another part of Thailand and would like to travel to the adventurous island.

Getting to Phuket is becoming more and more expensive

Unfortunately, I have to admit that I never had the pleasure of taking a direct flight from Europe to the largest Thai one Island to travel. This is definitely the best and most pleasant way to get to Phuket. But the direct flight is like a mysterious legend that everyone has heard of but no one has ever seen.

Either this flight is outrageously expensive or is already fully booked. The reality, on the other hand, is quite bleak: I recently searched for flights from Hamburg to Phuket I looked - and only found completely disastrous flight connections. With a stopover, the journey took up to 28 hours and cost up to 1500 euros in economy class.

Phuket is a hip place Destination – as well as Thailand. Flight prices have exploded recently and the availability of flights is scarce. Luckily, a direct flight isn't the only option you have to get to the island. In my experience report I will introduce you to other options.

Below I have selected a video for you with impressions from the airport on Phuket. The airport is not exactly huge - in fact it is quite small - and yet it is the third largest in Thailand in terms of passenger numbers - after the two airports in Bangkok.

My experiences traveling to Phuket

If you haven't yet Thailand or Southeast Asia, I can tell you: the journey to Phuket from Europe is long and arduous. If you're lucky enough to get a direct flight from Frankfurt, Paris or London, you'll be on the plane for up to 12 hours at a time.

That's a long time - but it's also short and painless. Unfortunately, I haven't had that much luck so far. Of course there are no direct flights to Thailand from my hometown of Hamburg.

From Hamburg via Munich to Abu Dhabi and on to Phuket

So far I have flown the following routes to Phuket: From Hamburg via Munich to Abu Dhabi and on to Phuket - it feels like a trip around the world and took well over 20 hours. And back. I have experienced more pleasant flights in my life. It really goes like chewing gum and you're on the road for what feels like an eternity.

From Hamburg or your hometown via Dubai to Phuket

Getting to Phuket via Dubai is a little more pleasant. There are flights to Dubai from all major airports in Europe. And from there you can get a relatively quick and comfortable connecting flight to Phuket. You only have to change once and only have a stay of between two and a maximum of six hours. Depending on the departure airport, the flight is divided into two times six hours of flight time. You'll then be in Phuket in 14 to 18 hours - which is already progress compared to the first connection.

Getting to Phuket within Thailand

I have traveled a lot in Thailand and therefore know that in the land of smiles many roads lead to Phuket. In the south in the Andaman Sea, the speedboat is the preferred means of travel. You can get to Phuket from Koh Lanta and Krabi via Koh Phi Phi. It only takes a few hours and is a really pleasant journey.

You can also travel all of these routes by intercity bus - but given the more attractive travel options, I haven't taken the bus yet and don't plan to. Riding the bus is not my thing in Germany - especially not in Thailand. You can either take a speedboat, take a taxi or get from A to B with very cheap and safe domestic flights.

Below is a video from Phuket Airport – a spectacular landing. You can see the journey up close. The airport is notorious for the approach path over the beach, where the jets whiz just a few meters above the heads of bathers.

This is the best way to get to Phuket

My conclusion

My conclusion is clear: Phuket is a travel destination that you can reach comparatively easily and from all directions. Most people come to the island via the international airport - either directly by land flight from Europe or the United Arab Emirates. Or with a domestic flight from Bangkok. This is the most common method for getting to Phuket. However, you can also get to the island by bus or taxi. That's the adventurous version.

I've already taken a taxi from Khao Lak to Phuket, which was a very exciting experience. In any case, in my opinion it is worth making the journey to Phuket because a tropical paradise awaits you there. I had some of the most amazing travel experiences on this tropical adventurer island.

Have you already been to Phuket or are you planning your first trip to the holiday island? How do you like to travel? Share your experiences in the comments.
