The fascination of flying – flight tips, airplanes, airports, curiosities and traveling by plane

To know why air travel tips are so important today, you first have to go back to the golden age of flying. Back then, traveling by plane was still a privilege of the rich and famous. Time seemed to stand still above the clouds - milk and honey flowed - in the truest sense of the word. In the fifties, sixties and seventies of the last millennium, passengers were treated like kings. Friendly, pretty stewardesses greeted the passengers with champagne and the pilot with his pilot's hat and huge pilot's watch curtsied. There were three-course meals and plenty of legroom at every seat.

What was economy class back then would certainly be first class today! If you want to experience a flight like this again today, you sometimes have to pay thousands of euros and fly at least business class to get your dream vacation. We don't want to exaggerate, but the conditions above the clouds were once heavenly. And today they are no longer! That's why we have the best flight tips for you to make the cramped journey without a meal as pleasant as possible.

The most important tips for flying

  • Rows of seats are getting narrower, service is getting worse - flying is becoming increasingly uncomfortable
  • How can you book cheap flights?
  • How can I bridge the time at the airport?
  • What do I have to consider and where are the pitfalls when booking?
  • Which travel gadgets will make the flight much more enjoyable?

Flying changed with the advent of budget airlines

In the eighties and nineties, it became apparent that the first low-cost airlines were pouring into the market. Because flying was not only first-class, but also first-class expensive. At that time, the only flight tips you need would have been: book as many flights and as many flights as you can and enjoy the service on board! So succeed the start in the Vacation as of course.

Then came the budget airlines. Thanks to companies like Air Berlin, Ryan Air and Hapag Lloyd Flug, the market has been turned upside down. Big top dogs such as Lufthansa, Air France, British Airways, KLM, PAN AM and American Airlines got really tough competition. Because the cheap airlines offered mass-suitable flights at cheaper prices - not just slightly cheaper, but really much cheaper flights! At the beginning of the 2000, you could at times start up for just one euro plus taxes.

But the low-cost airlines had to recoup the money somewhere. So people saved on food, luggage costs extra and now you pay horrendous sums for a desired seat on the plane. And because the low-cost airlines were so successful, the large, established airlines also became a lot more low-cost airlines. The fun of flying is really over with some airlines. We have experienced flights where we were as cramped in our seats as possible. The fun of flying is clearly over. You really get claustrophobic on some planes these days! The golden days of this form of air transport seem to be finally over. Reason enough to look intensively at flight tips that will make your journey above the clouds a little more pleasant.

Only premium airlines from the Arab and Asian region as well as the major international airlines still have a relatively rich menu on medium-haul and long-haul flights.

The fascination of flying: What we still love about air travel today

Despite all these immense disadvantages, you can still love flying today. The gliding above the clouds, the foresight and the symbolic departure for something new - an adventure - still make flying something special today. The time for work is over and the dream vacation begins. After all, the plane takes us to wonderful places like the Maldives, Thailand, Indonesia, the USA and many other destinations around the world that simply couldn't be reached without a plane.

For us, flying was always a moment of contemplation. The vacation began with the plane trip and represented a censorship from the previous one. In addition, because time usually passes slowly, airplanes and airports are a good place to concentrate on things that are left behind at home: writing an important text, reading a good book or simply watching that long-put off favorite series on the tablet computer. There are a lot of things to do while traveling by plane. Here, too, we give you the best flight tips on what you can do during your time at the airport and on the plane. You won't believe how many ways there are to pass the time on planes and at the airport.

Flight tips for turbulence on a plane – loved and hated

Fear of flying is a common problem. Many people are reluctant to board the plane, though they know that the likelihood of a crash is very low. Especially turbulence during the flight scare them. If the plane is properly shaken, they only cling to the seat.

Turbulences on the one hand are quite normal and on the other hand very harmless, if one is strapped. For example, we are one of the people who can enjoy a bit of shaking during the flight. This lets the adrenaline shoot up a bit and makes boredom disappear for a moment. Incidentally, many pilots are the same: Turbulence is the only moment during the flight that makes it exciting. We give you many valuable flight tips against turbulence.

With the rise of low-cost airlines and the loss of quality in charter flights, airplanes have degenerated into a mere means of transport for going on vacation or on business trips. The days when the journey was the destination when traveling by plane are long gone. You'll be all the happier when you finally arrive at your holiday destination and can begin your well-deserved rest. If you're not flying business class or first class, you'll often need a bit of time to recover from your journey in order to go on a luxury holiday. Our travel tips and, above all, holiday gadgets and travel equipment such as a travel massager, the right flip flops, noise-cancelling headphones and many other products that simply make the most wonderful time of the year even better will help you.

Flying and climate – are we vacationers ruining the planet?

Just recently there was a study that showed that we air travelers on the way to vacation or during a longer trip with several flight segments are real climate killers. Calculated down to every passenger and 100 kilometers, a plane only uses around two to four liters of fuel - less than any car. But extrapolated to all the passengers that are transported every day and all the planes that are in the air around the globe every second, flying is one of the biggest climate killers of all.

The kerosene that is blown into the air day in and day out is fueling climate change. What's particularly bad is that because planes fly between eight and 12 kilometers high, they blow the harmful greenhouse gas directly into the atmosphere. The bottom line is that the climate impact of travel and vacation is devastating and catastrophic. Every holidaymaker should be aware that when they travel by plane they contribute significantly to climate change.

The longest scheduled flight in the world – new aircraft enable new distances

Also in the aircraft industry, there are always new developments. While the Airbus A380 and the Jumbo Jet Boeing 747 are in less and less demand, new, slightly smaller high-performance aircraft such as the Airbus A350, the Airbus A321XR or the Boeing 787 Dreamliner and the new edition of the Boeing 777 are coming onto the market. These aircraft are much more efficient and flexible than previous machines.

There are now aircraft that can bridge really large distances thanks to more economical engines. There has recently been a direct flight from Perth in Australia to London. And that's only the beginning: the longest scheduled flights in the world should be over 17.000 km long in the future and fly in half a day in almost a day. When the time comes and regular long-haul flights - or so-called ultra-long haul flights - take place, we urgently need our flight tips in terms of boredom and Entertainment revise. So far, it is inconceivable to us how it might be to be in such a tight tube for the 20 hours. Our longest flight so far was 12 hours and that was more than enough for us.
