The island of Krk is a real hiking paradise on the Mediterranean. When I was on the island, I couldn't help but be amazed: remote paths between olive groves, old cultural monuments in the middle of nowhere and really magical paths right along the sea thrilled me through and through. Discovering the island on foot is truly an extraordinary experience. In my experience report about hiking on Krk with tips and my personal discoveries, I have put together a lot of useful information and my personal impressions for you.
My first and last impressions on the beautiful island of Krk in Croatia were completely identical - I thought: The air smells so good! She smells like Summer, to pine trees and to the Mediterranean. This is a combination that has been synonymous with vacation in southern Europe for me since I was a child. The salty water, the sun and the warmth have always created the perfect holiday feeling for me.
And that's what happened to me on the largest Croatian island: I was up for a total of two weeks Krk (travel report) and looked at the island from every conceivable perspective, traveling by rental car, by motorboat and by stand-up paddling - and yet one of the most beautiful experiences of my trip was simply exploring the island on foot, on the dirt paths and hiking trails , which mostly run between bushes and trees on this green island, but sometimes also quite spectacularly on mountains with panoramic views and through barren lunar landscapes.
You can go hiking everywhere on Krk
You can go hiking everywhere on Krk. The network of paths is very well developed across the entire island, so you can basically reach anywhere on foot from anywhere. Good for adventurers who want to explore the island without a rental car. And of course, the paths can usually also be used by mountain bikes, so you have an alternative to get around faster.
This makes it clear: The beautiful island of Krk in Croatia's Kvarner Bay is not only a paradise for sun worshipers and water lovers, but also for hikers. With a network of 400 kilometers of hiking trails, the island offers an impressive variety of routes suitable for both beginners and experienced hikers. Of course I haven't explored all of them, but at least some.

My experiences hiking on Krk
Hike the most beautiful regions of the island of Krk
During my fourteen-day trip I was able to hike some of the most beautiful regions on the island. Firstly, the region around my holiday destination Malinska. As already mentioned, there is the Rajska cesta, the paradise path, which really deserves its name. Not only did I go hiking there several times, but I also did a few trail running sessions on this picturesque path.
During the day you can make short stops there and rest under the pine trees and enjoy epic sunsets in the evening. My second favorite among the hiking regions was the area around Glavotok, which not only has the cute little monastery, but also a remote, tiny church - Crkva sv. Krsevan. You will also find really wonderful bays in the region where you can relax.
I was also traveling in the Vbrnik region. This historic town alone is worth a hiking session in this area - it is perhaps the most beautiful town on Krk and is surrounded by vineyards and beautiful hills. If you don't plan on hiking there, at least take a day trip there - that's definitely my recommendation.
I also traveled in the Baska and Stara Baska region. The island there is very mountainous and much more barren than in the other areas. Here you partly walk through a lunar landscape. Or you can enjoy the green valley that leads towards Baska. You have so many options on Krk - try to see as much of this island as possible during your stay.
Hiking on Krk is also suitable for beach vacationers
When you're on Krk, you should definitely go hiking - even if you originally only planned a leisurely beach vacation with the family and have no ambition to be particularly active on your trip. It's worth exploring some of the hiking trails right by the water, such as the Rajska cesta, the paradise trail, which runs between Malinska and Njivice.
You can simply take your swimming gear with you and find a picturesque bay along the way where you can sit down and go swimming. There are completely secluded bathing bays all around the island, which hikers are rewarded for visiting. Because I have noticed: the further a bathing bay is from the nearest car parking lot, the less busy it is.
And the island also has a lot of swimming fun to offer for more ambitious hikers. I would definitely pack my bathing suit because when you pass secluded bays with wonderfully crystal-clear water, it's just fun to jump in and cool off. I always did this by taking a short break to swim during my hikes.
Spectacular hiking tours on the Camino Krk
One of the most beautiful and longest paths you can take on the island is the Camino Krk, which circles the island and is reminiscent of the famous Way of St. James in Spain. The Camino Krk is not only a hiking trail, but also a spiritual path that is followed by many pilgrims. I was lucky enough to meet some of them and hear their stories. The people you meet along the way are often very open-minded and I felt like I was among like-minded people.
Along the island's sights
The Camino Krk takes you through some of the oldest and most picturesque villages on the island, past historic churches and monasteries that bear witness to Krk's rich history and culture. In addition, you can always enjoy the wonderful view of the Mediterranean, which shimmers in all shades of blue. During the whole time - it was August and pretty hot - I didn't do any hardcore hiking, but instead took breaks and went for a swim or just paused to enjoy the moment.
Accordingly, I can only say that the Camino Krk really has hikes for every taste. You don't have to go the entire route at once either. The route is divided into segments, from which you simply choose the ones that best suit your holiday planning. If you prefer a shorter hike, you can head to the Biserujka cave complex, located in the north of the island.
This stalactite cave is a fascinating natural wonder that will enchant you with its bizarre formations and colors. The cave is also a pleasant place to cool off on hot days. The path to the cave leads through a dense forest where you can discover the diverse flora and fauna of Krk.
Of course, the Camino Krk also runs through the capital of the same name. A visit to the town of Krk, which is the heart and soul of the island, should not be missed. The old town is a relic of medieval architecture, with narrow streets, old houses and an imposing fortress towering over the sea.
Town of Krk starting point for hikes
The town of Krk is also a good starting point for further hikes that will take you to the hidden beauties of the island. An example of this is the Vrbnik Valley, known for its exquisite Žlahtina wine. The vineyards here shine in a golden tone and invite you to take a walk. I was quite surprised when I discovered them for the first time. After an extensive tour, you can do a wine tasting in one of the many wineries and experience the taste of this special region.
I could tell you a lot more about my hiking experiences on Krk, but I just want to give you one piece of advice: take your time! The island has so much to offer that you shouldn't rush to explore it. Take time to admire the landscape, get to know the people and feel the atmosphere. Pack your hiking boots, a map and maybe a good book and let Krk enchant you.

Living on Krk during your hiking holiday
I am an enthusiastic hiker and chose a hiking holiday on Krk because the island offers a varied landscape and many beautiful hiking trails. I have at Sol Villas and Sol Tours booked a holiday apartment in Malinska, which is just a few minutes from the sea. The holiday apartment is spacious, comfortable and well-equipped.
I felt very comfortable there and was able to relax after my hikes. Sol Tours and Sol Villas (experience report) also helped me plan my hikes and gave me some tips on which routes I should take.
I explored the island from north to south and saw many interesting places, such as the old town of Krk, the monastery of Košljun, the cave of Biserujka or the beach of Baška. The nature on Krk is beautiful and diverse. I saw forests, meadows, rocks, hills and coasts. The hiking trails are well marked and maintained.
I also met a lot of nice people who also like hiking or cycling. The weather was perfect for a hiking holiday: sunny but not too hot. I really enjoyed my vacation on Krk and can only recommend Sol Tours as a provider of holiday apartments and holiday homes. You gave me an unforgettable vacation.
