With the Salomon Supercross 4 I ventured into trail running. The model is a lightweight outdoor running shoe that is suitable for both the city park and more demanding terrain. With its comfortable cushioning and the EnergyCell midsole, which allows the shoe to roll dynamically and comfortably, it is a reliable companion on longer training routes. How does the model fare in my Salomon Supercross 4 test with my first trail running experiences?
I put in a lot of mileage throughout the summer, running up to 28 miles a day. Most of the time I spent driving in the city on asphalt or in the park on gravel paths. My Fitness level reached new heights and I was amazed at how easily I could run such distances. But with success came a certain amount of boredom - and a 20-kilometer run took quite a long time. My runs became a real time waster.
So I urgently needed a new challenge. So I gave it a try Trail Running – which I’ve been using regularly since then – and bought the Salomon Supercross 4. Since I usually only wear ultra-light and thin running shoes, I was of course initially overwhelmed by the dimensions of the shoe with cleats, a generous width and an outsole that keeps out the mud target.
Shedding mud and sludge - that sounds like fun. And so I put on the shoes as soon as I received them and made my way to the nearest forest to do my first real trail run.

My experiences with the Salomon Supercross 4 in the test
My first trail running experiences are closely related to my first trail running shoe: the Salomon Supercross 4. As this is my first trail running shoe, I don't have any benchmarks yet and I can't say how it compares to other models in this shoe category.
But I quickly realized how well suited it is for my purposes: when I slid down a muddy slope on my first run, the shoe gave me maximum support. At first I was surprised myself, because I hadn't expected so much grip. The shoe literally stuck to the floor. I used to go there in a normal running shoe and used to have to walk down the slope in a double step – and with the Supercross 4 it was like night and day in terms of grip. Since then I've run down a few slopes in trairunning shoes.
Since then I've been a real fan. Whenever possible I avoid the asphalt and go off-road with the Supercross. I still run in street shoes on asphalt to avoid wearing out the Supercross spikes unnecessarily. But as soon as I go off-road, the trail running shoe is my standard equipment. In the meantime, I have even walked with it in the desert in Egypt and will continue to use it when traveling in the future, as it is comparatively light at just over 300 grams.
But you don't necessarily need a forest, a desert or even a jungle to use a trail running shoe sensibly. I regularly go jogging in the city park in Hamburg – and the subsoil, part gravel, part earth and mud, comes very close to a forest floor. That's why I use the Salomon Supercross 4 on unpaved roads in the city as well as in the forest or in other outdoor situations far outside of the city. Trail running refers to the surface and trail structure, not the area or region in which you run.

Features of the Supercross 4 - according to the manufacturer
The Salomon Supercross 4 is a trail running shoe that impresses with its grip and traction on a wide variety of surfaces. This is achieved by the Mud Contagrip sole, which offers optimal grip on loose, soft, rough or uneven ground thanks to its special material mixture and deep, sharp-edged lugs.
Midsole
The shoe's midsole is made from Fuze Surge, an EVA material blend that's super soft yet durable. The use of fewer synthetic polymers also protects the environment.
Membran
The shoe is also equipped with a GORE-TEX membrane that makes it waterproof. So the runner is protected from the elements and can run safely even in bad weather. Feet are kept dry inside and out. This enables safe and comfortable running in any weather.
outsole
The Supercross 4's Contagrip outsole is made of a sticky rubber compound that sheds mud and guarantees high traction. This allows the runner to walk safely even on slippery and uneven ground. The aggressive profile immediately catches the eye and offers excellent traction on different surfaces.
Chevron lugs on the shoe's outsole provide deep traction and multi-directional grip, improving traction on soft surfaces like mud or loose debris. The small arrows on the bottom of the shoe grip firmly on wet surfaces and allow for a secure step. Downhill you can also rely on the Contagrip outsole, because it grips firmly and takes runners safely over the trails.
Uppers
The upper of the shoe is made of ripstop material, which is particularly tear and abrasion resistant due to its reinforcement. A special process ensures that the material is water-repellent even in light rain and showers. And conveniently, the shoe can be carefully rinsed off in the shower with a shower without it being wet for days.
Feed
When designing the shoe, special attention was paid to comfort. The lining material of the model consists of a soft, breathable textile that ensures a high level of comfort. The insole of the shoe is made of milled OrthoLite and ensures comfort.
Fitting
The shaft of the Salomon Supercross 4 is equipped with SensiFit. This system wraps the foot from the midsole to the lacing system for a secure, close to the foot and customized fit. The technology ensures that the shoe adapts perfectly to the foot, making it safe and comfortable to wear.
lacing system
One of my highlights of the shoe is the lacing system. It features Quicklace™, a minimalist, strong lace that tightens with a pull for easy on and off.
toecap
The Supercross 4 is equipped with a preformed toe cap that protects the foot from frontal impacts. A dirt guard on the outside of the toes further increases protection.
Sustainability
The Salomon Supercross 4 is sustainably produced, using organic and recycled materials to reduce dependency on petroleum-based materials. The shoe is also PFC-EC-free.

My conclusion
In particular, the EnergyCell midsole and the Contagrip outsole are particular strengths of the shoe, which ensure both pleasant rolling behavior and brilliant traction. The fit is a bit narrower, but that shouldn't be a problem for many runners. The Quicklace lacing system allows the shoe to be put on and taken off quickly and easily, which can be an advantage in the event of unforeseen changes in the weather or terrain.
