We tested the black model of the Suunto Spartan Sport Wrist HR - and this version is really pretty dark. The black version has (intentionally) no bright style elements. But when you turn on the sports watch, the color display comes to life. The multifunctional sports watch says hello with a language smiley in a very friendly way and starts with an intuitive and easy-to-understand setup process. Via the Suunto app Fitness Watch be connected directly to the smartphone – in our case an iPhone. This works similarly to the Suunto 9 Baro and the Suunto 7 very easy and reliable.

The Suunto Spartan Sport Wrist HR, like most outdoor sports watches, is a pretty powerful and quite thick device on the wrist. You can immediately tell that this timepiece was built to support the user in many demanding and action-packed activities. After a quick and intuitive setup process, you can get started. The watch starts recording activity data, displays heart rate if desired and can be used in over 80 different sports. The Suunto Spartan Sport Wrist HR is a large and robust multifunctional watch. But it also has a simple elegance that makes it the perfect companion in everyday life and in the office.

Suunto offers excellent interaction of hardware and software in its sports watches

As with the other Suunto watches, it should also be emphasized that the interaction of hardware and software works excellently in the Suunto Spartan Sport Wrist HR. The watch synchronizes reliably with the connected smartphone (at least in our test with the iPhone on iOS - unfortunately we can't say anything about Android). For software updates, however, the timepiece must be connected to the computer using the conventional USB cable (not USB-C) that is included.

The cable is Suunto's own design, which has USB on one side and a plug designed by the manufacturer on the other side. To carry out the update, you have to download the app for Mac or PC and connect the watch to the computer. In our case, the sports watch was immediately recognized and the update could be installed without any problems.

We wore and tested the Suunto Spartan Sport Wrist HR while jogging, swimming, cycling and in everyday life. The look and feel is very high quality and the watch is like many Suunto products from Finland and not from the Far East. You can immediately notice the high quality of the timepiece. The multifunctional sports watch makes an incredibly reliable and solid impression. The operation is simple, intuitive and can be learned within a few minutes. With the watch's stable operating system, Suunto offers a variety of options for using the fitness watch in over 80 sports.

In any case, the possibility of measuring altitude is also exciting, which makes this watch particularly interesting for hikers and athletes who move across differences in altitude. We noticed that the heart rate measurement works extremely reliably and can take place in real time. We compared the heart rate to a record from another watch company and found almost 100% agreement. The Spartan's large touchscreen color display reliably shows the data even in high brightness and in direct sunlight.

However, the numerous strengths are offset by a few weaknesses. These include the very dark look of the watch - but that's a matter of taste. This sports watch is also available in a lighter version. The numerous setting options of the Outdoor watch for adventurers some users are overwhelmed. In the case of the dials - also called watch faces - there is certainly still room for improvement in terms of software, so that even more data is displayed on the dial. Here, Suunto could improve again with a later software update. However, I have to say that I haven't seen a watchface from other manufacturers that really appeals to me 100 percent.
