Dream hotel on the Mediterranean, 30 degrees Celsius, plenty of sun and the light blue water of the pool ripples in front of my comfortable lounger. I've completely stepped away and can finally really relax. Then a big shock! The vibration function on my smartwatch sends two subtle jolts to the arm that feel like someone tapping the wrist of the hand with their index finger: “Get up and move for at least a minute!” the smartwatch reminds me.

Two minutes later another message on the display: "Don't forget to breathe!" I get up from my comfortable sun lounger and take a deep breath. That's basically a good thing, because if I hadn't remembered, I would have completely forgotten how to breathe deeply. in the Office this function is great, because it gives you absolution to pause work and move away from your desk with a clear conscience. Yes, it is for your health.

The situation is different with the smartwatch when traveling and in Vacation out. I feel a little patronized and forced to leave my comfortable couch. I wonder: was that a good idea, my multifunctional Sports Watch to take on vacation or would I have the little knackers on the wrist rather left at home? For both views, there are indeed good reasons - as they will introduce you in the following.

That's basically a fine thing and not particularly difficult to implement. You leave it iPhone (test) in the hotel room, that iPad Pro (test) Best remains the same in the suitcase and except for the camera can actually all travel gear also stay away. If there was not a small practical companion that sticks to the wrist: the smartwatch. There are certainly some objection: After three seconds, the smart watch is stored and stowed in the hotel safe and digital Detox on vacation can begin.

But it's not that easy with this useful wearable. My watch is one Apple Watch, This watch has become the ultimate health tool in recent years. Why should I please in one Wellness holiday start and do a strong detox if I don't have my most important health gadget on my wrist?

With the smartwatch, I can record my heart rate, get my EKG, make sure I get up regularly from my comfy lounger by the pool, and even remind myself to breathe consciously every now and then. I also draw with the Apple Watch while jogging each time the distance, the duration and the calories I have at Jogging on the beach consume. In addition, it fascinates me to see each time how strong my pulse is in the morning meditation on the Beach goes back

And now we're in a technical quandary: the smartwatch offers so many health functions that I want to wear it all day long even on vacation. However, this does not exactly contribute to a digital detoxification when traveling - one could also say it is counterproductive. So what can be done to get out of this dilemma?

Which smartwatch functions I reluctantly do without when traveling

In fact, there are a few features of my smartwatch that I do not like to do without on vacation. These include, among other things, the fall detection. When I go for some sports activities on the wrong path and jogging through open terrain, the Hiking On a discovery tour or battling my way through the terrain with a mountain bike, the fall detection of my smartwatch is incredibly important. Especially for those who are traveling alone, the automatic emergency call can save lives in case of doubt - assuming mobile network coverage.

ECG function very useful

Incidentally, it looks similar with the ECG function and the automatic control on atrial fibrillation. We are not getting any younger. Heart problems can occur spontaneously in any person. Some smartwatches like that Apple Watch have proven to be reliable support in such cases in the past. They were able to predict the occurrence of atrial fibrillation fairly precisely and saved their lives.

Making emergency calls is essential

Third, it is very important to be able to quickly contact the emergency number in an emergency. Who often kayaks or Stand Up Paddling Board is on the move, knows the situation. Suddenly the wind turns and you have trouble getting back to the saving shore. Anyone who is aborted can quickly call for help via a smartwatch. In recent years, there have been some explosive cases in which an emergency call made by the smartwatch may have saved lives.

These three features are the essential smartwatch features on the road, to which I also refer Vacation do not want to give up. They make your holiday safer in any case - mobile network provided - and thus equally relaxed.

Smartwatch when traveling - are wearables a must for athletes and active people on vacation?

Of course, wearables are not a must for athletes and active holidaymakers. Anyone who does well and likes to spend seven to 14 days without his gadget will surely not die from it. Anyone who, as an ambitious trainer but also on holiday makes his workouts and calculates these in his training plan, of course, his training with the appropriate Sports watch functions log.

For the training itself, it would certainly be counterproductive to completely do without it during the trip. fitness watches, Outdoor watches and the best sports watches are also designed as important support when traveling. Now forfeiting on the trip to it makes no sense whatsoever. Anyone who believes that it supports him in his training progress and is also an interesting reminder of when and where he has done sports on holiday, can well record his activities with the smartwatch while traveling.

The best smartwatches and outdoor watches for more relaxation on vacation

Meanwhile, there are smartwatches, outdoor watches and multifunctional sports watches like Sand on the sea, The price range extends from 30 Euro to well over 1000 Euro, which you can spend on a high quality sports watch or smartwatch. The models are sometimes very different. While some Spartan wearables are limited to the basic functions of navigation (via GPS, GLONASS and Galileo), heart rate monitoring on the wrist and some fitness programs for several sports, other smart watches and high-quality sports watches are downright small high-performance computers on the wrist.

Switch off more relaxed when traveling and on vacation with the smartwatch

My conclusion

Of course, we are all torn, the smartwatch on vacation and travel to finally put aside, to pack in the safe and no longer to use. Nevertheless, it is important to keep in mind that this functional watch can also help us relax. No matter if snorkeling, swimming or just to see how many activity calories I burn on a typical vacation day.

Reasons for not using this practical Holiday gadgets there are enough in any case. That's why smartwatch counts as one of the most important pieces of travel equipment that we always have and always wear.

Take off your smartwatch on vacation?

At this point, let's go back to our initial question. Should I continue to wear my smartwatch with its countless health functions on vacation or should I stow it in the safe at the beginning of the trip and only take it out again shortly before the return flight? In my opinion, the most sensible solution is often somewhere in between. When I'm on vacation, I put on my smartwatch later and take it off earlier. I also put the watch aside once in a while when I'm resting.

But if I move a lot or do an activity such as jogging, cycling or yoga and meditation, the smartwatch comes back to my wrist. Recording my activities is important to me in order to keep track of the training sessions. This allows me to measure progress and also has a nice reminder of which routes I ran during the trip. So, as is so often the case, it's the middle ground that I think makes the most sense. To do without it completely is counterproductive – wearing the watch as often and for as long as you do at home is also counterproductive.
