Table of Contents show

You have a wide range of interests and curiosity, enjoy writing and taking photos for your Instagram account. You read yourself Blogsif you google something and look for tips from experts. You follow a lot of influencers on Insta – fashion girls, foodies, travel influencers – and think to yourself: I would like to do that too. You're not sure which topic interests you most and you don't want to commit yourself.

You've been dreaming of creating your own blog and becoming a blogger for quite some time. Instagram is too superficial for you and you would rather write something. But you haven't dared to create a blog yet. Lifestyle, fashion or would you rather become a travel blogger?! You don’t know yet – and that’s a good thing.

Yes, you should create a blog and become a blogger

Many people who enjoy writing, photography and are internet-savvy have at least once thought about creating a blog and becoming a blogger. In your own blog you can exchange experiences, publish photos and videos and even set up your own online shop. The possibilities are almost endless and good blogs on every topic imaginable are already a dime a dozen.

However, that shouldn't stop anyone from starting their own blog project - because if you have something to say, you should also share it with your readers. In any case. You don't have to reinvent the wheel, but it would be a shame if you didn't share your perspective on a personal blog.

Planning your blog is the be-all and end-all

And before you get started and create a blog, take a deep breath and pause - because now comes the most important part of the whole project: At the very beginning there is the planning, some technical hurdles and the first contributions that should inspire your readers. If you have been thinking about creating a blog and becoming a blogger, today is the right day to start. With my tips for creating a blog, I would like to give you simple and easy-to-understand instructions on how to become a blogger today.

My goal with this blog post is for you to think carefully about whether a blog is the right online platform for you before you start your blog. Blogging is a rewarding activity, but it needs to be well planned. If my article inspires and motivates you to start blogging, great. If it makes you want to go back and become a Youtuber or Instagrammer because you like videos much better, then this blog post has served its purpose.

Being a blogger is hard work

With the Travel Blog I started Just-Wanderlust.com on July 1, 2016 and a few years later I am one of the largest and most wide-reaching blogs in Germany. This took me a lot of time and hard work. I had to learn a lot along the way. Blogging is anything but easy.

Above all, it is time-consuming because you write every single blog entry yourself - and not just anything, but a valuable and exciting post that gives your readers all the information they need on a specific topic. That's why you start blogging: to write down something really great and share it with your readers. And Tender is more than just an idea - it's hard work.

If you want to run a successful blog, we're not talking about ten posts - but at least 250, preferably 500 or even 1000 posts. There is a lot of work behind a blog like this. Writing a blog is often easier said than done, especially if you travel a lot or have a demanding full-time job.

If you're really passionate about your topic, love writing and really have something to tell your readers, you should start creating your own blog today. But wait: Be sure to read my tips and experiences on becoming a blogger beforehand, because they can save you a lot of effort and time.

Do you prefer Instagram or YouTube?! – Who reads blogs these days?

Choosing between Instagram, YouTube and your own blog can be difficult. Instagram may seem simple and fun at first glance, but it also has disadvantages. The biggest disadvantage is that you start with 0 followers and it can be difficult without paid ones Advertising to gain followers. In addition, Instagram posts disappear quickly and have to be constantly updated, which can be very time-consuming.

A blog has many advantages

In contrast, a blog offers many advantages. It's more work-intensive, but every blog post you write can be found in search engines. This means that you can build up a steady stream of visitors over the years. If you regularly create high-quality content, share your knowledge with others, and link to your posts, you have a better chance of ranking well in search engines and being found by visitors to your blog.

Many people still read blogs

But who reads blogs these days? The answer is simple: many people! They read the blog and look for information they find in search engines or other articles. If you produce good content and get found by Google, your blog will be read - today and in the future.

Control over content

Another advantage of blogs is that you have full control over your content and brand. Unlike Instagram or YouTube, which have their own algorithms and policies, having your own blog gives you the freedom to shape your content however you see fit. You can also earn money in various ways, for example through affiliate marketing or selling your own products.

Blogging challenges

Of course, a blog also brings challenges. It takes a lot of time, energy, and commitment to consistently create good content and build a readership. You also need to know about SEO and technical aspects like web design and hosting.

Overall, the decision depends between Instagram, YouTube and your own blog depend on your individual goals and preferences. If you want to reach a larger audience quickly and easily, Instagram or YouTube are certainly a good choice. However, if you want to build a community, share expert knowledge and remain independent in the long term, a blog is a worthwhile investment.

Should I still be a blogger in times of ChatGPT, Google Bard and the new Bing?

And suddenly there they were: chatbots with artificial intelligence that answer every question immediately. Where should I go on vacation this year? Which are the most beautiful travel destinations? The answers: helpful and useful. Alarm bells rang in my head and I asked myself: Who needs it in times of Chat GPT, Google Bard and the new Bing still blogs as a source of information? At first I thought: The end of blogs is coming. Then I researched and realized: Far from it.

cooperations
When chatbots like ChatGPT or the new Bing have all the answers ready, does anyone still read blogs?

Because blogging is a popular form of online communication that allows you to share your opinion, knowledge or passion with others. They will continue to exist side by side in the future. But does it still make sense to start or continue your own blog when there are more and more AI-based tools that can generate texts or answer all questions?

The benefits of blogging

Blogging is a great way to express yourself and create an online platform where you can share your interests, passions, and expertise with others. Blogging has many benefits, both for the bloggers and their readers. One of the biggest advantages is that you can express yourself creatively and develop your own style. You can improve your writing skills, experiment and try what you like best. Blogging can also help you expand your knowledge or discover new topics that you might otherwise have missed.

Another benefit is that blogging allows you to build an audience and interact with your readers. You can build a community of like-minded people who support you and share your content. You can get valuable feedback and new ideas through comments, interactions on social media or emails from your readers. Blogging also gives you the opportunity to expand your network and make new contacts. You can draw attention to and connect with other bloggers, companies, or experts in your field. Blogging can also be a stepping stone to appearing as a speaker at conferences or in the media.

Finally, through blogging you can also increase your income or strengthen your brand. You can use sponsorships, advertising, or affiliate marketing links on your blog to earn passive income. Blogging can also be a great way to strengthen your personal brand, promote your business, or position yourself as an expert in your field.

The challenges of blogging

But there are also challenges that have to be overcome when blogging. But with the right strategy and attitude, even these can be overcome. Here are some of the challenges you might face as a blogger:

  • Regular and Quality Content: In order to attract and retain readers, you need to consistently deliver content that is not only informative, but also engagingly written and engaging. It takes time and effort to come up with ideas, research and write.
  • Distinguish yourself from the competition: There are already established blogs in almost every field, so it is important to find a niche and differentiate yourself from the competition. This requires creativity, strategic thinking and a good understanding of your target audience.
  • Stick to legal and ethical rules: As a blogger, you have to comply with legal regulations such as the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). You should also observe ethical rules such as disclosing paid partnerships.
  • Technical Questions: Even though it's easier to create a blog these days, there can still be technical challenges. This includes things like installing plugins, securing your site, and optimizing load times.
  • Patience and Long-Term Thinking: Building a successful blog takes patience and perseverance. It may take a while before you have enough readers and your blog generates income. It's important to think long-term and not give up if the results aren't immediate.

The future role of ChatGPT and the new Bing

ChatGPT and the new Bing are just two examples of many AI-based tools that can affect blogging. Similar examples will be Google Bard and the new Google with chatbot support. ChatGPT is an impressive example of how AI models can generate text or answer questions. The new Bing is another example of how personalized search can help find exactly what you're looking for.

But what does this mean for blogging? Can these tools help or hurt? The answer is: It depends. There are many scenarios where these tools can be helpful, but there are also situations where they can be harmful. One of the biggest advantages of these tools is that they can inspire you and help you with your research. For example, if you're looking for ideas for new blog posts, ChatGPT can help you by suggesting similar writing that might inspire you. The new Bing can also help by showing you relevant search results based on your interests and preferences.

However, these tools can also harm you by copying or replacing your content. When ChatGPT generates text that is similar to your content, it can dilute your brand. Even the new Bing can replace your content if it believes there are better options that suit your readers' preferences.

On the other hand, these tools can also help you to increase your reach or improve your feedback. For example, if you use ChatGPT to generate automated answers to frequently asked questions, you can serve your readers faster and increase their satisfaction. If you use the new Bing to get feedback on your content, you can optimize your blog posts and adapt them to the needs of your readers. However, these tools can also distract or confuse your readers. For example, if you use chatbots to interact with your readers, they may feel like they're talking to a machine rather than a real person. If you use the new Bing to display personalized search results, your readers may feel that their privacy is being violated.

My personal opinion is that ChatGPT and the new Bing cannot replace blogging. They are just tools you can use to make your job easier. But blogging is more than just writing texts. It's about your personality, your voice, your values. It's about the relationship between you and your readers. It's about your passion for your topic.

Finding your own voice when blogging is more important than ever

Ultimately, no tool can replace the human side of blogging. So dare and start your own blog! While ChatGPT and the new Bing can automate or simplify some aspects of blogging, you're still the one creating the content. Your personality and voice are unique and should be reflected in your blog. If you want to inspire your readers for you and your blog, you have to find your own style and stick to it consistently. Because your personality and your voice are what distinguish you from other bloggers and bind your readers to you in the long term. But how do you find your own style? Here are a few tips:

  • Write as you speak. Avoid unnecessary jargon or stilted gibberish. Your readers want to get to know you as a person and be able to identify with you.
  • Write from the first-person perspective and let your readers share your experiences and thoughts. This makes your texts authentic and credible.
  • Use visual elements like photos, videos, or graphics to liven up your posts and show your style.
  • Be bold and experiment with different writing styles and formats. You don't always have to use the same style. It is important that you try and develop your own style.
  • Once you find your own style, you'll find that your readers connect with you and keep coming back to your blog.

Become a blogger - Be clear about your motivation and create a vision statement

You have the idea for your own blog, feel the spirit of optimism and would like to start blogging right away. I can tell you: the initial euphoria will quickly dissipate. Because blogging, like writing a book, is a craft and hard work. Maybe you write ten blog posts in a short period of time and then you look back and wonder why you are not yet successful.

The Google rankings are missing, you hardly have any readers and you are slowly starting to ask yourself if you couldn't spend your time better. Sooner or later everyone feels that way. Basically, if you don't stop now, keep going, your blog is technically sound, and you're following blogging best practices, you really can't fail. You just have to keep going.

What is my real motivation?

Psychological studies show that people are motivated to do something for three reasons: either because they want to be part of a community, because they want to achieve something, or because they seek power. Get clear about your true motivation and be fully aware of why you want to create your blog and become a blogger. For example, I want to reach as many people as possible and make a difference in the lives of my readers with what I have to say. In other words: I want to influence them. I want my travel blog to change the way they experience their vacation and I want them to come back from their trip even more relaxed and refreshed.

What is the motive behind it? Power. Through what I write, I have a certain impact on the lives of the people who read my writing - because they change their behavior. Maybe they travel more sustainably, choose a different travel destination than originally planned. The other motive is power. I want to make a difference, I want to be read and praised by as many people as possible.

These two aspects together are motivation enough for me to get up at 5 a.m. and sometimes to write until 23 p.m. That may sound a bit exaggerated and you just wanted to start a small blog? I can tell you from experience: If you want to stay with us permanently and be successful as a blogger, you have to deal with these questions relentlessly. And then you develop your vision statement based on your findings.

Create the vision statement for your blog

A vision statement for your blog can help you clarify your goals and intentions and focus on what matters most. A vision statement is a short sentence or paragraph that describes what your blog aims to achieve and what purpose it serves. Here are some tips on how to create a powerful and motivating vision statement for your blog:

Formulate your vision statement clearly and precisely

A good vision statement is simple and concise. It should be summarized and understandable in one sentence or short paragraph. Avoid technical jargon or overly complicated formulations that could alienate your readers.

Use positive and motivating words

Your vision should motivate and inspire you and your readers. So use words and phrases that are positive and powerful, such as "inspire," "encourage," or "change."

Connect your vision statement to your true motivation

Your vision statement should reflect your true motivation for blogging. For example, if you're passionate about blogging, you should express that in your vision statement. If you blog to help others, that should also be included in your vision statement.

Describe how your blog will change the world

A vision statement should describe how your blog will improve the world or the impact it will have on readers. For example, if your blog aims to help motivate people to pursue their dreams, you should emphasize that in your vision statement.

Be honest and authentic

Your vision statement should reflect your values and beliefs and be honest. Avoid crafting a vision statement that doesn't fit you or your blog.

Example of a vision statement

My blog inspires people to achieve their dreams and reach their full potential by sharing valuable expert knowledge and practical tips. I want to build a community that supports and encourages each other to achieve their goals

Sample blog vision statement

Once you've written your vision statement, you should use it as a guide for your future blog posts and decisions. It can help you stay focused on your goals and intentions and stay motivated to achieve your goals.

Ultimate pro tip – plan your blog intensively in advance

Before you start as a blogger, you should plan your blog very carefully. Because there are some settings that you will find very difficult to change later. The more time you take to plan your blog, the easier and more enjoyable it will be later. Because some mistakes that you make at the beginning will later run like a red thread through your online magazine and can only be corrected with a lot of effort.

Only when you have thought about everything carefully should you start writing your blog. The best thing to do is grab a piece of paper and a pen or your iPad with Pencil and brainstorm to jot down your ideas. In particular, you should think about the following questions

  • What exactly is my topic? What exactly is my niche?
  • What should my blog be called? Which name do I like and will I still like it in two years?
  • Do I want to host my blog myself or with a blog provider?
  • Which content management system is right for me?
  • How do I want to structure my content? What do I want to write about?

Especially the first two questions about the topic and the name are so important that you should take a few days and maybe ask friends and relatives who know you well for advice. Brainstorm together. Once you have a few names to choose from, sleep on them for a few nights and see if you still like the name of your blog. I would like to emphasize this again: You can save a lot of time, nerves and money if you answer these questions as comprehensively and sustainably as possible.

1. Select blog name and domain

You should think carefully about the name of the blog. If I had the choice again, I wouldn't name my blog Just-Wanderlust.com. The name with Wanderlust I just don't like it as much as I did at first because it's used so often. However, rebranding my blog with a different name is very time consuming and may cause you to lose your search engine rankings, so I'm keeping the old name.

If you don't want to make this mistake, you should take more time to find a name right from the start and choose a name that you will still like five years from now. Once you've found a nice name, you can secure it as a domain.

2. Host the blog yourself or have it hosted by a third party

All successful websites tend to be self-hosted. You choose a provider like Strato or IONOS and set up a web space where your blog, the database and all files are stored. If you host your blog yourself, you have full control over all files, so to speak. If you're going to be more successful later and maybe even have a programmer working on your blog, you definitely need a self-hosted blog. Then you have to take care of everything yourself: You have to 1. set up your content management system (CMS), 2. assign the SSL certificates and 3. connect the database.

Third-party hosting, on the other hand, means that you set up your website with a website provider that offers you a simple website builder. This might be tempting for a beginner in the beginning, but as you get more into your blog, it can cause problems later.

3. The right content management system (CMS) for your blog

If you want to create a blog, you need to choose a content management system (CMS) that will allow you to write your blog posts, design the look of your website, and set all the important settings. The most widely used CMS is WordPress. It is used by millions of websites worldwide. I'll be honest: I've been working with WordPress since 2008, I've had very good experiences with it overall and will continue to use it in the future. So I can only recommend it. However, everyone has different preferences and of course you can also use systems like Drupal, TYPO3, Joomla!, Contao or Neos.

4. Design the blog – find the right blog theme and design it individually

After you set up the system, you can take care of the content of your blog. First you have to find a suitable design with which to create your blog – this is also known as a “blog theme”. If you use WordPress as your CMS, you can find suitable themes at Themeforest.

You then customize the theme of your blog – the look – with colors, fonts, images and videos according to your own preferences. This part is almost the most fun because this is where you can let your creativity run free and design your blog the way you like it.

5. Now we can start writing the blog

Once you have your blog set up the way you want it, you can start filling it with content—especially text posts. Because a blog is above all a written online travel magazine for which you want to win readers. You can – and should – add photos and videos, social media embeds, tables and lists to your text posts to offer your users the greatest possible added value. However, the core of your work as a blogger will consist of writing your blog.

Sitting in the booth and writing texts - that's how many imagine the life of a blogger.
Sitting in the booth and writing texts - that's how many imagine the life of a blogger.

Becoming a Successful Blogger – Blogging Best Practices

Maybe you'll get to the point where you're surprised that you've written so many texts and yet only so few readers can find you through search engines like Google or you're even losing your reach again. To keep going with a clear conscience, make sure you're following blogging and search engine optimization best practices. Ranking losses and ranking gains as well as corresponding fluctuations in traffic are completely normal. Blogging best practices include both technical and content aspects. You should make sure that the following conditions are met

  1. Your blog should be technically up to date, easily accessible and equipped with the most important plugins such as cache plugin, SEO plugin, etc. Make sure that the pages load as quickly as possible and are not overloaded - especially with Java Script. Submit your site to Google Search Console to see how your site is performing.
  2. Write really good articles in which you contribute all your knowledge and skills - the search engine operator Google speaks of this Helpful content. Make sure that you back everything up with facts and sources - and yes, of course you can also contribute your own opinion. You should even contribute your own opinion and say something on the topic that no one else has said before. The competition is fierce and you need to stand out from the crowd to be successful today.

These are the two most important best practices for your blog. If you would like to learn more about how to increase your blog's chances of success, feel free to contact me for blog coaching.

But where do you start and how do you create a successful blog? Don't worry, below I've rounded up 10 essential blogger tips that will help you start and grow your own blog.

Tip 1: Use WordPress for blogging

WordPress is an excellent entry point for anyone interested in blogging. The platform offers a variety of features that allow you to customize and customize your website. Your website design is an important factor in attracting and keeping readers on your site. WordPress offers a wide range of free and professional themes that you can customize to suit your needs.

Another great feature of WordPress is its ease of use. You don't need to be an expert in HTML, CSS, or PHP to design and manage your website. WordPress' intuitive drag-and-drop editor makes adding content, images, and videos to your site a breeze. With just a few clicks you can change your theme, add pages or customize your menu.

Another great advantage of WordPress is the huge community of other bloggers and developers who can help you with questions and problems. There are tons of forums, blogs, and online tutorials where you can get support and advice from other WordPress users. You'll never be alone if you have a problem with your site or are just looking for ideas to improve your content.

In addition to the community, WordPress also offers high security and performance for your blog. With regular updates and security patches, WordPress ensures that your website is protected. Also, there are many plugins you can use to make your website even more secure and speed up loading times.

There are many providers like Bluehost or Siteground that offer WordPress hosting to help you get started. With these steps, you are ready to create your own website with WordPress and start blogging.

Tip 2: Find your niche

A promising way to find your niche is to conduct market research. Browse other blogs, forums, or social media in your area of interest to see what topics are being discussed the most and what questions keep coming up. Take a look at what your potential readers are looking for and what their needs are. Once you have found your niche, you should define and focus on it as precisely as possible.

It's also important to remember that your niche shouldn't be too narrow or too broad. If your niche is too narrow, you'll struggle to produce enough content to engage your readers. If it's too broad, you'll get lost in the crowd of other blogs and it will be harder to build a loyal readership. A good niche should be narrow enough to be specific but broad enough to provide enough content.

Remember that it takes time to find and define your niche. It's an ongoing process and it's important that you stay flexible and adapt your niche to the needs of your readers.

Tip 3: Write unique and informative content

Content is the heart of your blog. He decides whether your readers will come back or not. To write good content, keep the following tips in mind:

  • Write for your audience, not for yourself. Put yourself in your readers' shoes and answer their questions or solve their problems with your content.
  • Write in a clear, understandable, and personal tone. Avoid jargon and unnecessary filler words. Write in the first-person form and address your readers directly.
  • Write original and unique content. Do not copy from other blogs or sources. Bring your own opinion or perspective.
  • Write informative and valuable content. Offer your readers useful information, tips, or advice. Support your statements with facts, statistics or examples.
  • Write regularly and consistently. Your readers should know when to expect new content on your blog. An outdated blog can turn off potential readers.
  • Use different formats and media. Use not only texts, but also images, videos, infographics or podcasts to make your content more interesting and varied.
  • Make sure your content is easy to read. Use subheadings, paragraphs, and lists to make your text clearer and easier to read.
  • Link to other content on your blog or other sources. This can provide your readers with additional information and make your blog more connected.
  • Have others proofread your content or give it to friends or family members to review. Errors or incomprehensible content can deter readers.
Unique and informative content is key to your blog's success. If your readers find your content useful, entertaining, or inspirational, they'll be happy to come back and recommend your blog.

Tip 4: Optimize your blog for search engines (SEO)

To optimize your blog for search engines, you also need to understand how search engines work. Search engines like Google use complex algorithms to decide which websites to show up first in search results. These algorithms take into account various factors such as the relevance, quality and authority of the website.

In order for your blog to be visible to search engines, you need to make sure it meets these criteria. This means that you create high-quality and relevant content that is tailored to the needs of your target audience. You should also make sure that your website loads quickly and is user-friendly. Backlinks, i.e. links from other websites to your website, are also an important factor for the placement of your website in the search results. These links signal to search engines that your site is trustworthy and relevant.

To increase the visibility of your website, you should also be active on social media platforms such as Facebook, Twitter or Instagram and share your posts. In this way you not only increase the reach of your blog, but also the number of backlinks and visitors. So, SEO is an important factor in the success of your blog. By optimizing your website for search engines, you can attract more visitors and potential customers. But don't forget that SEO is a long-term strategy that requires continuous work.

Tip 5: Network with other bloggers

There are several ways to network and benefit from other bloggers. Here are some tips:

  • Find other bloggers in your niche: Find other bloggers who cover similar topics as you and target the same audience. You can search for blogs you like or for relevant social media groups. Follow these bloggers on their social media channels, comment on their posts and share their content.
  • Offer Guest Posts: A great way to increase your reach and connect with other bloggers is to write guest posts on other blogs. Write a post that is relevant to the other blogger's audience and link to your own blog. This way you get valuable backlinks and can attract new readers.
  • Organize blog parades: A blog parade is an event in which several bloggers write posts on a specific topic and link to each other. With blog parades you can not only win new readers, but also strengthen your expert status and expand your network.
  • Attend blogger events: Attend blogger events or conferences to meet other bloggers in person. Here you can not only learn from other bloggers, but also make valuable contacts.
  • Use social media groups: Use Facebook groups, Twitter chats and other social media groups to share and network with other bloggers. There you can ask questions, share your posts and get feedback from other bloggers.

If you network with other bloggers, you have many options and you can benefit from their experience and knowledge. At the same time, you can help other bloggers with your own experiences, creating a win-win situation.

Tip 6: Write regularly and consistently

It is important to choose a frequency that is realistic and can be maintained over the long term. It's no use posting something every day for the first few weeks and then suddenly not posting anything for weeks due to lack of time. So plan ahead and create an editorial schedule that will help you keep track.

Consistency also means that you maintain a clear structure in your posts. Use consistent headings, fonts, and colors to give your readers an enjoyable and professional reading experience. Also, be careful not to overwhelm your readers. Long, unstructured texts can be daunting. Divide your text into sections and use lists to highlight important points.

If you can't publish a post, communicate openly and honestly with your readers. It's better to announce a pause than just remain silent. Your blog and your readers will thank you if you are transparent and reliable.

Tip 7: Use social media to promote your blog

Every social media platform has its own audience and strengths. For example, if you are a fashion blogger, Instagram might be the best choice for you as it is a visual platform where you can share pictures of your outfits or your recent purchases. On the other hand, if you are a technology blogger, Twitter might be a better choice for you as it is a rapidly evolving platform where the latest trends and developments are discussed.

To get the most out of your social media channels, you should actively use them. Don't just publish your own posts, but also comment and "like" the posts of other users. This way you can build a community that supports and encourages each other.

Another way to use social media effectively is by using hashtags. Hashtags help you place your posts in relevant search results and gain more visibility. Use hashtags that are relevant to your topic and what your target audience is searching for.

Finally, you should visit your social media platforms regularly and respond to your readers' comments and messages. When you interact with your readers personally, you can build a closer relationship with them and encourage them to continue following your blog.

Tip 8: Analyze your statistics

You can also analyze the success of your social media channels to see which platforms are performing best and how your followers are interacting. You can also find out when is the best time to publish your posts and what types of content are getting the most attention.

But not only in terms of content, it is important to keep an eye on your statistics. You should also pay attention to what the metrics look like for the technical aspects of your blog, such as: B. Load times, number of errors and security. This can affect the user experience of your readers and thus reader retention and acquisition.

However, it is important not only to look at the numbers, but also to understand what they mean and how to interpret them. It's worth investing time in analyzing your stats and reviewing them regularly to get a better idea of how your blog is performing and what you can improve.

Tip 9: Monetize your blog

You should also keep in mind that monetizing your blog takes time and effort. Before you can make money from your blog, you need to generate traffic. In order to generate traffic, you need to produce quality content on a regular basis and increase your reach through social media and SEO. Networking with other bloggers and analyzing your stats can also help increase the success of your blog.

Another important factor in monetizing your blog is transparency. Your readers should always know if you are using affiliate links or getting paid for sponsored posts. It is important to be honest and transparent in order not to lose the trust of your readers.

Ultimately, making money shouldn't be your main goal when blogging. It is important that you write with passion and authenticity and that you focus on your readers. If you produce good content and understand your target audience, success and money-making will come automatically.

Tip 10: Stay authentic and creative

Exactly! A successful blog takes time and dedication, but it's worth it in the long run. If you choose WordPress as your platform, you have already taken the first step in the right direction. Don't forget, however, that it is necessary to create content that resonates with your target audience. You should also find your niche to differentiate yourself from other blogs and focus on a specific topic or audience.

Once you start creating content, it's important that you are unique and informative. Write in a clear, understandable, and personal tone to gain the trust of your readers. To reach more readers, you should optimize your blog for search engines and share it on social networks. Analyzing your stats can provide you with valuable insights and improve your blog.

As your blog grows and you have a loyal readership, you should start thinking about how to monetize your blog. There are different ways to monetize your blog, but it is important that you only promote products and services that fit your blog and your target audience in order not to lose the trust of your readers.

Finally, it is important that you remain authentic and creative. Your blog should reflect your personality and passion. You should bring your own opinion and perspective and set yourself apart from other blogs and trends. By following these tips, you can create your own successful blog and inspire your readers!

Creating a blog tips – step-by-step instructions

I have put together a small step-by-step guide for you on how to create your own blog. I tried to write the instructions as simply as possible so that even complete newbies can understand how to become a blogger and get started.

Become a blogger - It's that easy to create your own blog

Duration: 10.000 hours

1. Brainstorm, planning, the most important questions

The first step is particularly important because it forms the basis for years of continuous work on your blog. Therefore, before setting up your blog, it is important that you answer the following questions, as they can save you a lot of time and effort later:
What do I want to write about? About which types of travel, travel destinations and topics? Rather niche or rather broad?
What should my blog be called? Which name would I still like next year?
Which social media channels are suitable for my blog? Do I really have to record every channel or do I want to focus? Do I even want a classic blog or rather a vlog or social media channel? Do I want to blog as a hobby, part-time or full-time?
How much money do I want to invest in my blog? Do I even want to hire staff to write for me?

2. Find a blog provider and hosting provider

Once you have clarified the most important initial questions about your blog, you can select a blog provider and register there. I use the largest provider WordPress for my content management system (CMS). But there are also many other systems such as Drupal, Joomla or Typo7. There are providers such as wordpress.com, Wix or Squarespace for externally hosted blogs. I started Weebly.com. If you're serious about blogging and want to save yourself a lot of time later, consider self-hosting your blog right away. If you have more ambitious plans, it is simply recommended. Then you can look for a hosting provider and open an account there. If you want to try it out first, you can create a third-party hosted blog with your blog host, which is often free, and familiarize yourself with the system. Try and learn. Before you really get started, you simply switch to a hosting provider to self-host your blog.

3. Technical installation of the blog

I could write a whole series of blog entries on this point alone. If you have your blog hosted by another provider, you hardly have to do anything. You choose a blog template and get started. This is easier in the beginning, but makes it more difficult later. When in doubt, you better start with a self-hosted blog. That's how it works:
First you have to secure your domain - preferably with your hosting provider such as Strato or IONOS.
Then set up your CMS in the hosting provider's account. You can choose between WordPress, Drupal and many others. I personally recommend WordPress as it is easy to use and widely used.
With your hosting provider, you also need to set your PHP version, assign a database to your CMS, and assign the security certificates.

4. Set up your blog and design your website

Once you have everything set up with your hosting provider, you can log into the backend of your blog. Now the real work begins:
Before you can get started, you must first select and install a blog theme.
Then you adapt the theme in the design to your needs.
Now you install important plugins for your site.
Make sure your blog is GDPR compliant. You must create an imprint and a data protection declaration. You have to be extremely conscientious about the personal data of your readers. Cookies may only be set if the users give their consent. The whole topic is tricky: it’s best to read up on the subject intensively, get legal advice if in doubt, and take out blog insurance with legal protection if you want to be on the safe side.

5. Writing blog posts

Now you can finally start writing your blog. You will be really proud when you have published the first posts on your blog. This is something different than a simple diary - at least if you want to be successful with your blog. How to blog good reports, blog posts and articles in general - I could write many articles with tips on that alone. Here are the top blogging tips:
Write for your readers and not for the search engine and provide your readers with lots of valuable and useful tips in your articles. That's half the battle to be successful with your blog.
Do keyword research and find out what your readers are interested in and what they want to know when they search for specific search terms.
Use blog elements like photos, tables, lists, and structured data. Integrate videos and social media posts.
Link your posts appropriately to each other and also link meaningful external pages in order to offer your readers further information on a topic.
Write and publish new blog posts continuously to provide your readers with new reading material and to keep your site up to date.

6. Dissemination of blog posts on social media

When you have great posts published on your blog, search engines like Google will index them and readers will magically find your articles when they search for specific keywords like “Sardinia travelogue”. You can also distribute your lovingly and elaborately designed articles via social media - for example, by also having accounts on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and Co. and publishing the articles there. You can also promote the posts there – but that doesn't always make sense because it can easily burn money.

Create a blog with WordPress instructions - Here's how

You can choose between numerous content management systems such as Drupal, Typo3 and Contao for your blog. I had the pleasure of working with these systems professionally and I have to say: this is not my world. If you just want to become a blogger, create a simple blog and don't want to be an IT professional, these CMS are difficult to handle. This is not meant to be an advertisement for WordPress and you might want to try different CMS before setting up your blog on WordPress. Just saying WordPress works best for me.

And this is how it all looks in practice when you have created your travel blog on WordPress and start writing. Create a travel blog Become a travel blogger Tips Instructions
And this is how it all looks in practice when you have created your travel blog on WordPress and start writing.

Mainly because you can choose from a variety of plugins and extend the functionality to your liking. Since WordPress is the world's largest provider, most plugins are also developed for it and you can easily adapt your blog to your needs. I would always create my travel blog with WordPress. I have put together a step-by-step guide on how to create your blog with WordPress here.

1. Install WordPress blog at the host on the server

You look for a web host such as IONOS or Strato and set up your customer account there. You can now install WordPress for your travel blog on your web space. Larger providers do this for you automatically and in a few seconds you have installed your CMS and linked it to the database. Don't forget to set up an SSL certificate for your site - this is mandatory since the GDPR. You can recognize it by the "s" in https://.

2. Log into the WordPress backend of your blog and make settings

After setting it up with the hosting provider, you can log into the backend of your WordPress blog and familiarize yourself with the settings. Above all, you will want to install a whole bunch of plugins. I have compiled for you a list (below in the text) of the WordPress plugins that I use in my travel blog and that I am very happy with.

When setting up your website and the plugins, make sure that you comply with the provisions of the General Data Protection Regulation and other laws in your place of residence and the place of residence of your readers.

In particular, you'll want to install your WordPress travel blog theme first. You can find high-quality themes at Themeforest. I am currently using the Sitka theme. It's great and I like it a lot, but it hasn't been updated in 1,5 years. That's why I'll soon be looking for a new travel blog Wordpress theme.

List of the most important WordPress plugins for your blog

The list is arranged alphabetically and contains my absolute must-have WordPress plugins for blogs, without which working on the online travel magazine would be much less fun.

  • AAWP Amazon Affiliates WordPress Plugin - getaawp.com
  • Advanced Ads banner advertising - wpadvancedads.com
  • Advanced Custom Fields
  • Advanced editor tools
  • Borlabs Cookie - Cookie Opt-in - borlabs.io
  • Disable / Remove Google Fonts
  • Easy table of contents
  • GDPR tools: comment ip removal
  • GTranslate
  • Imagify
  • Instagram Feed Pro Personal
  • Rank Math SEO PRO
  • Shariff wrapper
  • Worthy - VG WORT integration for WordPress
  • WP Rocket - wp-rocket.me

*Advertising: Website links can contain so-called affiliate links. If you buy the plugin via this link, I get a small commission - you don't pay anything extra.

3. Create travel blog posts and pages in the WordPress backend

Now it can finally start. Your travel blog is set up and you have adjusted the design. You have installed the most important plugins. Now you can finally start writing blog posts. When you have everything prepared, you can get started and write exciting blog entries. How best to write a blog, I will explain to you in a separate article. If you want to create blog entries and pages in the WordPress backend, you should proceed as I described above:

Once you have your blog set up the way you want it, you can start filling it with content—especially text posts. Because a blog is above all a written online magazine for which you want to win readers. You can – and should – add photos and videos, social media embeds, tables and lists to your text posts to offer your users the greatest possible added value. However, the core of your work as a blogger will consist of writing your blog.

Jetting through the world, snapping a few photos and making a bunch of money – this is how many imagine the job of a travel influencer to be. The reality is of course very different. Travel Influencer - Travel Blogger Instagram
Jetting around the world, snapping a few photos and making a lot of money – that’s how many people imagine the blogger’s profession to be. The reality is of course very different. As a blogger, you spend thousands of hours in front of your computer writing posts.

If your blog becomes successful – then you remain steadfast

Even if your blog is successful, you may run into trouble. There can be many reasons for this: My blog is now one of the widest-reaching in the German-speaking world and I have put thousands of hours of work into it. Nevertheless, during the Corona crisis and the Ukraine war, the sales figures for my affiliate products and services plummeted. This can be very frustrating. You actually did everything right and built a successful business. But an external event that you have no control over destroys the business. The good news is that business usually picks up again - so just go ahead and plan on lower income for a while.

No matter what happens to you during your time as a blogger and causes your business to falter: Giving up can be a solution. But you should think this through carefully. Because as in any business, the same applies to blogging: Whoever lasts the longest will be successful in the end.

Become a blogger – Think about a business model for your blog

You can't just make money with your blog. You need a business model, just like any other company. Thankfully, you're not the first person who wants to start their own blog and become a blogger. Therefore, there are good opportunities for bloggers to monetize their blog and make good money from blogging.

I don't want to go into too much detail at this point, but I'll be writing a separate article about it soon because I've had a lot of experience with monetizing my blog myself and now know what works well and what doesn't. Some of the best ways to make money from your blog are:

  • The use of affiliate links in blog posts
  • Selling sponsored posts on the blog
  • Advisor behind a paywall
  • Consulting and coaching offers
  • Banner Ads and Display Ads

You don't have to choose one variant. You can try all the options on your blog and see what works best for you. Basically, the greater your reach, the more you will sell. Don't be surprised if you sell little or nothing at first. With more readers, sales also increase if you offer your users the right products.

Create a blog and bloggers will learn from the best

You don't have to reinvent the wheel and can be inspired by others. Look at what other people are doing and then think about what you want to do. Of course, when designing your blog, you can also be inspired by those who have already made it and become successful bloggers. Even if you have already planned exactly what you want to do in your blog and how you want to design it, you can get a lot of valuable ideas by looking at what others have done.

Make better decisions: The more often you decide for and against something, the better your decisions will be - and when you realize how important some decisions are, you automatically make better decisions.
As a travel blogger: in you are out and about in the most beautiful travel destinations around the world - but that doesn't help you if you don't sit down at your laptop regularly and write really great and exciting articles about it.

This does not mean that you should do exactly what others have already done. You should only learn from them and adapt their principle to you. Of course I'm in the field of travel blogs. In Germany alone there are several thousand travel blogs and of course I look at what my other colleagues, some of whom I know personally, are doing. I think a lot of things are good, some things are totally stupid. And then I think about how I can stand out and what I might want to do as well. I've listed the biggest German travel blogs for you, so you're sure to find one or two ideas for your own blog.

Of course, I couldn't list all travel blogs in German-speaking countries in the table. Experts estimate that there are several thousand actively operated travel blogs in German-speaking countries alone - and even more where you can find content that the operator no longer maintains.

So if you're looking for travel blogs, you should search as specifically as possible according to your preferences - then you'll definitely find the insider tips you need for your next trip. The blogs mentioned above are only the most widespread and successful - many others are also worth reading.

Creating a blog on Instagram: is that really possible?

Many users wonder if creating a blog on Instagram works. Unfortunately, a lot of people get this confused, so you have to differentiate very clearly: You can't create a travel blog on Instagram. You can create an Instagram account and post photos and videos from your life or from vacation there. Then you are a blogger and/or travel blogger, but rather an Instagrammer, travel instagrammer or travel influencer. But then you are not or not a travel blogger.

If you want to become a blogger, you have to run a blog and publish posts there. You will put many thousands of hours of work into your online magazine and be able to reach very interested readers. If you have an Instagram account, you are not a blogger. By the way, that doesn’t mean that as a blogger:in you can’t have an Instagram account – in addition to the blog. However, creating a genuine blog on Instagram is not possible.

Being a travel blogger is a lot of fun, but it is also a challenging job if you do it seriously. Working on a travel blog is very time-consuming and labor-intensive.

Become a blogger Instructions – How to create a blog

My detailed conclusion

I love blogging and I'm glad that my blog is now so successful that I can make a good chunk of my living from it. But the road to get there was long, frustrating and painful. Technical problems, sales slump during Corona, demotivation when writing, demotion by search engines (or demotion). There are many setbacks in a blogger's life.

My goal with this blog post was for you to think carefully about whether a blog is the right online platform for you before you start your blog. Blogging is a rewarding activity, but it needs to be well planned. If my article inspires and motivates you to start blogging, great. If it makes you want to go back and become a Youtuber or Instagrammer because you like videos much better, then this blog post has served its purpose.

And that's exactly why I wrote at the beginning: Become aware of your motivation and create your vision statement. If you know why you want to create your blog and become a blogger, you will overcome these setbacks and just keep going. If something doesn't work out the way I want it to, I shrug my shoulders, fix the problem, and move on. Because it's worth having your own blog, it's so, so worth it. I sincerely wish you all the best.
