Workation tips, tricks & experiences – combine vacation and work in a meaningful way?

by

Workations promote creativity at work and help you to escape from the usual work environment in order to gain new views and perspectives. A workation is a vacation that you combine with work. That can mean working from your hotel room, visiting local cafes or coworking spaces, or attending meetings in other cities. Workations are popular with bloggers and influencers, digital nomads, freelancers, and other remote workers who want to take a break from their usual environment and work somewhere new. What is a work? What advantages and disadvantages does it have? What should you definitely consider when combining vacation and work? I have put together many valuable workation tips and my personal experiences for you.

You open your notebook, sip your cappucino, enjoy the sea view from the small breakfast café in yours Hotels, take a deep breath and leisurely start answering your emails, planning ads, analyzing analytics data, writing posts or doing whatever your job is at the moment. Sounds romantic, right?

In any case, it sounds better than spending 45 minutes in a traffic jam on the way to the metropolis in the morning, spending the day in a gray and dreary office, only to then have to wind your way through the traffic jam again, only to wake up completely exhausted to end on the couch before everything starts all over again the next day.

If your life looks like this, maybe a workout can be a last-minute save to prevent burnout. In any case, the combination of vacation and work can give you new impulses, new impressions and new perspectives that give you new ideas - good for you and your employers and clients.

With this blog post I would like to motivate and inspire you to try the Workation principle for yourself. Combining vacation and work can be a really worthwhile concept.

I've had many and frequent Workation experiences because my job can be easily performed from anywhere. I just have to open my notebook and off I go. If I drove to the office in the morning - and back in the evening - that would be 1,5 hours of valuable working time that I would simply lose. For that reason alone, I am fundamentally an advocate of Remote Work and consequently also by Workation. But not all that glitters is gold: Remote working and workations have some real challenges that I have identified over my many years of experience.

It's better to master them in order to be successful - and so that your first workation is not your last. Anyone can do a workout - but a really successful workout requires more than just a notebook and the will to chill at work. First and foremost, you need tough discipline to withstand the numerous distractions at a vacation spot. Otherwise, you'll quickly find yourself doing 100% Vacation and 0% Work.

Workation Definition – cleverly combining work and vacation

Workation is a new term – one could also say – a fashionable term or neologism. That's why you will sometimes find quite different definitions for it. That's totally okay, too - because the term combines many different aspects. Below I once dared to try a workation definition:

The term workation is a combination of the English words for work and vacation - work and vacation. It can be used to describe a journey that has some element of work in it, whether it's attending business meetings, completing tasks from a hotel room, or simply being in a new place to find inspiration for your work. Work and vacation can be combined in any ratio during a workation.

Workation preparations - you should consider that

Workation – the fusion of work and vacation – has become significantly more popular in recent years. The opportunity to freely choose where to work and at the same time enjoy the advantages of a holiday destination sounds tempting. But a well-planned workation requires careful consideration and thorough preparation. It is not a spontaneous journey but requires a clear view of several factors that can determine success.

The main goal of a work trip is to effectively combine work and leisure. That is why predetermined work goals are of central importance. Working outside of the usual office environment can bring new challenges. That's why it's important to set realistic goals to maintain productivity and work performance.

I did a job at the hotel – so in three weeks I went on vacation for two weeks and worked for a week. This works very well at the Mövenpick Resort because there is reliable WiFi almost everywhere. Mövenpick Resort Soma Bay experiences reviews reviews travelogue

Choosing the right place to work plays a crucial role and should therefore be carefully considered. While some people prefer the vibrant life of a big city to find inspiration, others may prefer the peace and serenity of a remote location to better concentrate. It's important to choose a location that suits your work style and personal preferences to have the best possible work experience. Finances are another important element that needs to be carefully planned.

Your workation should be within your budget so that you get the comfort and equipment you need without causing unnecessary financial stress. Consider what costs might be incurred for accommodation, living expenses, transportation and other necessities – plan accordingly.

My personal workation experiences and tips

Workation is a concept that is perfect for my work as a journalist, author and as an online marketing and social media consultant. I can do my work completely independent of location if I want - and I have often been on a workstation in the past.

Wherever I open my laptop, I can do my job just as well as in my home office. However, as I mentioned at the beginning, in addition to the numerous advantages, there are also some challenges that you absolutely have to overcome before and during a workation.

Advantage: being able to leave your usual work environment

The big advantage for me is being able to leave my usual working environment and still – or precisely because of that – be creative and productive. When you write a lot, you usually spend a lot of time sitting and at your desk. We live in a very busy place in Hamburg - and you can't just go out into the countryside.

The place is not exactly suitable for finding new inspiration or coming up with great ideas. That's why a workation is essential - to gain some distance from this place and my cramped office.

My personal workation experiences and tips I have the great privilege of being able to work from wherever I open my notebook - and it doesn't necessarily have to be a stuffy office.

My favorite travel destinations for a workation

My favorite travel destinations for a workation are basically evenly distributed across the globe - preferably in the tropical latitudes, where the European winter is particularly tolerable. In my opinion, a workation in Southeast Asia is highly recommended. This is partly a bit clichéd - but that doesn't make your time there any worse just because someone else doesn't think much of it. I spent five weeks in Thailand for a workation.

You can live cheaply there, eat excellently for a low price and have better mobile internet than in Germany. You can stay in a beachfront bungalow and enjoy the beautiful surroundings while being productive and creative. Thus there are excellent conditions for a workation. Phuket, for example, is a magnet for IT professionals and developers - you will also find numerous coworking spaces there.

And that is perhaps another real insider tip for a workation: Last year in December I did four weeks of workation in a hotel in Egypt. You can book really good hotels there with all-inclusive offers for a very reasonable price. Instead of taking a week's vacation and then flying home to work there again, you simply stay four weeks, take a week's vacation and work three weeks in the sun and warmth - for an unbeatable low price. We only paid just over 1000 euros for the long time in the hotel with flight and all inclusive.

I'm so much more productive and creative on Workation

My personal work experience is that I am much more productive and creative when I leave the office. A new environment ensures that the work and, above all, my texts are of higher quality when I work remotely.

In addition, the distraction is significantly reduced. When you're sitting in a café and not scrolling through your smartphone, you quickly find yourself with nothing better to do than work. When you're at home, there's always something to do that serves as a distraction from work - be it household chores or visiting friends.

Who is a workation suitable for?

A workation is particularly suitable for people whose jobs do not require them to work directly on site. If you only need a laptop, a smartphone and an internet connection for your work, these are the best conditions for doing a workation. Conversely, workations are of course unsuitable for many professional groups. If you're a dentist, it's hard to pack up your practice and work from Thailand for two months. Unless maybe – you treat patients in Thailand.

My criticism of the concept of workation

I am an advocate for workation and use it regularly myself. But even with this working concept, not everything that glitters is gold. Self-employed people and people who work a lot in front of their laptop in the home office in particular know it: work and leisure are becoming increasingly blurred. And if you're not careful, a workation is no different. The work tasks that you want to do briefly in the morning at the Beach Bar last the whole day. You suffer from listlessness and would rather lie on the beach or go on an excursion.

If you're not careful, work and free time become blurred during a workation. You should therefore make sure to strictly separate the two when combining work and vacation. If possible even after days. And also keep checking to make sure you don't catch yourself either neglecting work for your vacation or working too much on vacation. Finding the right balance is really a balancing act. I speak from experience.

The most beautiful and sensible travel destinations for your workation

Below I would like to introduce you to some workation travel destinations that you may not know yet. Workation is a combination of work and vacation where you take your laptop with you and work from another location.

There are many great workation destinations around the world, but I want to focus on Southeast Asia and the Indian Ocean here. These regions offer you a variety of nature, culture and activities to enjoy. In addition, they are usually easily accessible, secure and internet-friendly. Here are my top 5 workation travel destinations in Southeast Asia and the Indian Ocean:

1. Thailand

Thailand is an economically developing country. The digital infrastructure is greatly developed. You have good internet and can use co-working spaces. In addition, the cost of living is still comparatively low. You can rent an apartment or an entire house for little money. In addition, of course, there is the paradisiacal ambience that sweetens your after-work.

2. Indonesia

Similar to Thailand, Indonesia is one of the fastest growing economies in the world. You can expect very fast internet and excellent infrastructure in places like Bali or Lombok. Many people do their work in Bali. But if you want something a little more exotic and cheaper, you can choose one of the neighboring islands.

3. Mauritius

Mauritius is the Switzerland of Africa - the country with the most prosperity and the happiest people in Africa. Beautiful beaches, picturesque landscapes and a thriving economy make Mauritius the preferred destination for your work trip in the Indian Ocean. Best conditions to work from there.

4. Malaysia and Singapore

Malaysia is a highly developed country in Asia and also an emerging economic nation. However, Malaysia - similar to Singapore - is a little more advanced and therefore more expensive. Similar to Singapore, the worst that can happen is that you pay significantly more for your work because the cost of living is so high.

5 Vietnam

Vietnam has so far been somewhat less economically developed than its neighboring countries. Accordingly, it is sometimes even cheaper. But you also sometimes have to accept limitations in the infrastructure structure.

6. Sri Lanka

Similar to Vietnam: Beautiful country, ideal for vacation, but a little less suitable for work. You can try it. You benefit from low prices. But it also depends on how dependent you are on a stable internet connection.

7. United Arab Emirates (UAE)

Many influencers have moved to the United Arab Emirates - especially Dubai - to live and work cheaply. The big advantage for your workstation: you are guaranteed sunshine there all year round. You are there in high-tech countries that are booming economically. The disadvantage: The Emirates are only semi-suitable for work because the cost of living is very high.

FAQs Workation – the most important questions and answers about combining work and vacation

If you want to do a workation, you should answer the most important questions for you in advance and plan your absence in detail. I have put together the most important questions and answers about the combination of work and vacation for you.

What is a work?

A workation is a holiday associated with work. That can mean working from your hotel room, visiting local cafes or coworking spaces, or attending meetings in other cities. Workations are popular with digital nomads, freelancers, and other remote workers who want to take a break from their usual environment and work somewhere new.

Why work?

There are many reasons why Workation has become so popular in recent years. First, the rise of digital nomads and remote work has made it easier for people to work from anywhere in the world. Second, the globalization of the workplace has meant that more and more people need to work with colleagues in different time zones, making Workations a great way to meet in person. Finally, work stays offer a unique opportunity to combine work and travel, which is a great way to relax and discover new places.

How can you take advantage of a Workation residency?

If you are considering a work stay, there are a few things to keep in mind. Workation Tips, tricks and experiences – combine vacation and work in a meaningful way?

My conclusion

I am a big fan of workations and have often taken part in this combination of work and vacation. You can work more creatively, relaxed and productively if you approach your work correctly. However, I would be careful: the boundaries between work and leisure are becoming increasingly blurred. If you're not careful and really plan ahead, you might just end up taking your work with you on vacation. It can also be difficult to get used to working in your home office again after a long period of work. It's completely okay to strictly separate work and vacation.

If you can do this well, you can try a workation and you will quickly find that this form of working is much more pleasant than in a musty office. But as I said: Be careful, the boundaries between workation and self-exploitation are fluid. You should always remind yourself of this and evaluate whether your work is going the way you imagined.
