Wanderlust knows no account balance. Once you've been torn by the thirst for travel and want to discover the world, you'll easily find yourself plundering your savings and spending all your money on your next big tour. Whether world trip, sabbatical or simply the next vacation, travel costs only once. We'll give you valuable tips on how you can save money for travel and with the right savings tips on vacation from the outset have to scrape together less money.

Let's start from the beginning. That's the thing about traveling and money. The next big vacation away from home is always in competition with other purchases such as a new car, the latest smartphone or many other temptations of everyday life. Many of us easily become weak and simply prefer the material purchases to a great and exciting trip that might cost one to two or even three thousand euros. Because material things accompany us to a certain extent. A journey, on the other hand, is over as soon as it is over. Even if it lasts for weeks or even months, it will eventually come to an end. At least that's what many people think.

Studies show that travel is more valuable than material purchases

But the thing is not so easy for so often. Many scientific studies have shown that a journey has a long-term effect and is more valuable than material acquisition. Various studies have examined the human brain and found that people who travel and visit special, impressive places are happier, happier, and have healthier brain activity. A representative study by the British non-profit organization National Trust states:

“This research has shown that there is a strong physical and emotional connection between places and people - and that these places have a positive impact on our wellbeing. The results of the fMRI study show that meaningful places produce a significant emotional response in the core emotion-processing areas of the brain that is consistent with the physical sensations people experience in those places, such as joy, tranquility, and the feeling of being energized ”

National trust

That's the study. That doesn't mean you have to travel for it. But it's an open secret that a dream beach in Thailand or a Maldives island makes you happy. And you first have to do that with the expensive new smartphone or the trendy new smartwatch.

There are two basic ways to save while traveling

To supplement the travel budget, or even to make it exist once, there are two basic approaches, which are basically two sides of the same coin. These include saving for travel and saving while on vacation (starting with the booking). On the one hand you can save for the trip before the trip and put money on the side by discipline and skill.

Many travel experiences are still remembered years later - it pays to save for the trip.

On the other hand, there are of course various ways to save on your trip. However, it always sounds as if the travel experience would be worse because you might be saving at the wrong end. But that doesn't have to be the case. There are things that have no impact on the quality of the vacation and still offer savings potential. The following applies: If you keep both factors in mind, you will soon have solid plans travel Finance and a few extra euros in your pocket.

Saving money for travel made easy - so you get away favorably in the distance

Despite all the wisdom and tips, it's not that easy to save money for travel. It takes a certain amount of discipline to set aside a certain amount of your income every month. It's not just consumption that gets in the way, but also all the small everyday expenses for food, transportation, insurance and much more. In addition, many people believe that they cannot put any money aside because they do not earn enough. But we at Just Wanderlust always say:

Everything is possible and even with the smallest budget and little money, a great trip can be realized.

We therefore have valuable savings tips for you, with which you can easily save money for travel. If you internalize these ideas, you will not even notice how slowly but surely a small sum accumulates, with which you not only once but regularly pay for great holidays or longer trips. Incidentally, these tips are not just for travel but for all sorts of savings.

1. Save money for vacation: start saving as early as possible

Saving money is rarely a sprint, but more often a marathon. You should therefore start as early as possible to have as long a lead time as possible before your next trip. If you plan to fly away in six months, you have a wonderful window of opportunity to save. Basically, with a long-term investment horizon, it is enough to put 25 to 50 Euro as your travel budget every month. Depending on the demands you have on your holidays and tours, relatively quickly a decent travel budget has accumulated, with which you literally come a long way.

2. The savings plan for the holidays: Create savings

It's particularly clear why we should start saving for travel as early as possible. Because if you start on time, you do not need to focus on the naked accumulation of money, but can also accumulate interest with the savings. The investment takes a little time to work. The smallest, still reasonable investment horizon is three months. However, investment periods of one, three, five and ten years are certainly much more meaningful. Because then you really cost the leverage of compound interest.

You should therefore invest your money according to your preferences. Of course, this doesn't make much sense for a vacation that's supposed to take place in two months, because there are currently only meager interest rates on current account accounts and investing in funds with stocks and bonds hardly makes sense in the short term. That's why you should aim for long-term planning. If you invest in appropriate investment funds with bonds and stocks every month and have a long-term investment horizon, you can most likely even finance one or two trips from the interest alone.

3. When is a travel loan useful?

Of course, the ultimate economy accelerator is a travel loan. Basically, a loan is like saving - just the other way around - and afterwards you pay the fees for it. If your loan is approved, you will immediately have all the money for your trip together. The disadvantages are obvious. You then have to pay off the installments and there are also interest due on your travel loan.

Nevertheless, one can travel credit be useful in some cases. Namely, if you are planning a really extraordinary tour like a world trip or a sabbatical or really need a vacation. However, the money spent on credit should be kept within limits. Basically, we recommend you deal with travel credit very responsibly and maybe not for every x-any Majorca vacation to take a loan.

4. Save money when choosing the destination

Of course, it's not just about accumulating money for vacation. On the other hand, you should of course also strive to spend as few euros as possible on the trip - no, “stinginess is cool” is not the motto here. But the goal is to pay less while maintaining high performance.

To achieve this, you have various options. For example, you can book your favorite travel destination outside of the peak season because then the prices for flights and hotels are lower. At the same time, this has the pleasant side effect that there are most likely not that many tourists there. In addition, you should always keep the holiday periods in Germany and the country you are traveling in in mind and avoid holy water again.

5. The flight is expensive - so you save on the flight

You can also save money when flying. Similar to choosing your travel destination, you should also be careful when booking your flight. The same applies here: holiday periods and busy holidays are often particularly expensive. Secondly, round-trip flights that operate on Thursdays, Fridays and Sundays tend to cost more than on other days of the week. Experience has shown that Tuesday is relatively cheap. Of course, this only applies to a limited extent and not on long-distance routes when an airline only flies to a destination once a week.

In the meantime many factors have an influence on the price of the plane and it is much harder to estimate when a flight is really cheap than in the past. However, there is still the rule of thumb: If you book two months before departure, has a good chance to make a real flight bargain.

If you book two months before departure, chances are good to make a real flight bargain.

6. Choose cheap accommodation and save money quickly on vacation

In addition to flights, accommodation is probably the biggest adjustment you can make on a trip in order to have a cheap vacation. For example, we flew to Thailand for four weeks and only got accommodation for the first night. We looked for all other hotels, apartments and holiday apartments locally. Because there are always friendly locals who have recommendations and know someone where you can stay cheaply and, above all, comfortably. However, anyone who books accommodation in the travel destination in Germany often has to dig deeper into their pockets.

7. Choose alternative means of transportation

At the means of transportation we personally would not save. A rental car is often a basic feature of our travels. However, if you do not necessarily need your own car, you can save a lot of money. Anyone traveling by coach or train in their country of travel can certainly travel well and cheaply, and most likely will meet many nice people at the same time.

8. Orient at the resort to locals

This is perhaps the most fun point. Anyone who is not just a tourist at the destination, but shows a serious interest in the locals and their culture, maybe even learns the language in the holiday country, will certainly be quickly absorbed into their midst. All parties benefit in many ways. On the one hand, you get to know new people, and you may even make friends, get valuable insider tips on the spot, and often have the opportunity to eat cheaper, stay overnight for little money, and enjoy the local hospitality. That this also saves money in the end, is then likely to be booked as a pleasant side effect.
