Taking your iPhone and iPad with you on vacation – what should you keep in mind?

In the past few years, I have been able to gain some valuable experience when traveling with iPhone and iPad. Both devices were reliable companions on my trips and supported me in many situations. Since the iPhone 6, I use the iPhone as the only camera when traveling. And if I want to write a travel diary, edit photos and videos, or make reminders or handwritten notes on the go, I have my iPad with Magic Keyboard and Apple with pencil. The iPad in combination with the Apple Magic Keyboard has often replaced my notebook.

If you want to take your iPhone and iPad with you on vacation, you should consider a few things before you travel, despite all the advantages of high-tech gadgets, that will save you time on vacation and when travelling. Below are some iPhone travel tips to ensure you have a fantastic time while still staying connected.

1. Your data plan

First things first: Make sure you have a good data plan. There's nothing worse than not being able to connect to the internet or make phone calls with your iPhone while traveling - especially if you want to keep in touch with family and friends or like to post on social media about your trip. Check with your wireless service provider in advance for international rates and if they offer special rates for travel.

If you are an EU citizen and travel to other EU countries, you can usually continue to use your normal tariff. If you travel further away, it may make sense to buy a regional SIM card and surf with the cheap local rates. In any case, you should check your tariff very carefully before you start data roaming - because the costs can be hefty.

2. Load important apps

Before your trip, you should download some essential apps before you leave. I recommend you a good map app like Apple Maps, which also comes pre-installed on iPhones and iPads, as well as a currency converter and translation app if you plan on sightseeing.

And of course, don't forget your favorite social media apps so you can share all your amazing vacation photos. Most iPhones and iPads come with a whole range of apps pre-installed. You should definitely install any apps that you are missing before your trip because the hotel WiFi is often slow.

3. Use external MagSafe battery

Finally, you should invest in a good, portable power bank. You'll be amazed at how quickly your battery drains when you're constantly using your smartphone to take photos and videos, stay connected, and so on. A portable power bank like the MagSafe external battery Apple, which attaches magnetically to the iPhone, ensures you never have to worry about running out of juice.

Traveling with iPad and iPhone – tips and tricks for a better holiday

Traveling with iPad and iPhone simply makes the trip better. In particular, thanks to the functions of the operating systems iOS on the iPhone and iPadOS on the iPad, you can use many features that help you plan your trip at home and allow you not to miss anything on vacation.

You've probably noticed that I've had very good experiences using the iPhone and iPad so far - and I'll show you below how you can use the high-tech gadgets to make your trip even more beautiful and unforgettable.

1. Create your packing list and share it with fellow travelers

With iPhone and iPad, you can use the built-in Notes and Reminders apps to create a packing list so you really don't forget anything as you prepare for your trip. You can also share the list with fellow travelers so they can check off items or add new to-dos.

The practical thing about it: Notes and reminders are seamlessly synchronized with all your devices and are therefore available to you on iPhone, iPad - and of course on your Mac at home.

2. Write a travel diary and take notes

I use the Pages app for my travel diary Apple, which can be installed on the iPhone as well as on the iPad and Mac. You can customize your travel diary on the iPad Pro, iPad Air or iPhone according to your own wishes and add photos, quotes, links and lots of other useful information.

If, on the other hand, you want to make handwritten notes on the iPad Air, the pre-installed app of the same name is the first choice. Your entries with the Apple Pencil look like your real handwriting - only without the disadvantages of a real handwritten recording. In the Notes app, you can also take quick notes to remind yourself, or organize and manage detailed information in the form of checklists, images, web links, scanned documents, handwritten notes, and hand drawings.

3. Capture important memories

Do you know that, too? The best ideas always come to me on vacation and longer trips. And so that I don't forget them until I get home, I make a complete list of reminders that automatically appear when I get back to my desk after the trip.

Of course, this not only works for brilliant ideas, but also for all other to-dos that arise at home after the trip. With the Reminders app preinstalled on iPhone and iPad, you can create short reminders with subtasks and attachments, set alerts based on time and location, and share to-dos accordingly.

4. Apple Use maps as iPhone travel guides

The pre-installed "Maps" app on iPhone and iPad has now become a helpful travel guide. My highlight is the still relatively new function called "Look Around", where you can look at pictures from many places in the world and, for example, move around a sight.

But you get even more: Discover new places in the Maps app and create your own free iPhone travel guide - or plan your tours in even more detail using editorially curated travel guides in the Maps app.

5. With Apple TV+ Watch movies and series offline

The "Apple TV+” app is one of the best streaming apps. For the trip, I would recommend you to download the episodes of your favorite series to your iPhone or iPad. If there is WiFi on the plane, it is usually chargeable and usually does not allow streaming. Even in the hotel, the WLAN is often not fast enough for streaming.

That's why you should watch your favorite films and series in the "Apple Download the TV+" app to your home WLAN before you travel - then you can enjoy it on the large 10,9 inch screen of the iPad Air on the go.

6. Find baggage with AirTags

I have equipped my wallet, my keys, my travel backpack and my suitcase with an AirTag. This is a small tag that you can use to locate your valuables on your iPhone or iPad and find them again quickly and easily.

With the AirTags you can reliably keep an eye on your valuables. This is particularly useful for suitcases. If you've AirTagged your suitcase and it doesn't arrive, at least you know where it's at. You can track it until it's delivered to you.

7. Translate in real time

You can convert text, speech, and conversations from a number of languages to other languages on iPhone or iPad with the Translate app. The most common, most spoken languages in the world are of course supported. What I like best is the function where you hold the iPhone or iPad between you and the person you are talking to and the conversation is translated in real time on a split screen. Communication at the holiday destination couldn't be easier if you don't understand the language in the destination country.

Incidentally, the translation of websites at the push of a button is also practical. The really good insider tips are often only available in the language of the target country. In the Safari browser on iPhone, iPad and Mac, you can translate websites from the website's language to your own language in seconds with the push of a button.

8. Take and edit photos and videos

The iPhone has always had good photos (iPhone Photography Tips) - and with each model generation they have gotten a little bit better. With the iPhone 6, I was able to take photos for the first time that were so good that they were printed in a magazine. From then on I used the iPhone as the only camera for photos and videos when traveling and on vacation.

Almost all of my photos in the travel blog were taken with different iPhone models. I'm currently using the iPhone 13 Pro Max, which takes fantastic photos and videos that any professional SLR or mirrorless system camera can match. Gone are the days when you had to lug around a giant camera on vacation. And the iPad Air also takes excellent pictures that are really impressive, as I did recently during my iPad Air 5 reviews noticed.

As a rule, I do a division of labor: the photos and videos are taken with the iPhone, then uploaded to the iCloud and then I edit them on the larger screen of the iPad. The image editing functions of the "Photos" app are sufficient for editing most photos. For more intensive editing - for example if you want to cut out objects - there are countless practical third-party apps.

9. Take photos and videos underwater

I also use my iPhone's camera for underwater photography when diving and snorkeling. For this you need the underwater housing from a third party, in which the corresponding iPhone is inserted. There are now a number of different housing models for different iPhones - also in very different quality.

Personally, I can particularly recommend the SeaLife underwater housing for the iPhone, as it is particularly robust, suitable for dives up to 40 meters and there is a matching flashlight that can be screwed to the housing.

10. Save credit with data saving mode

I already wrote at the beginning that you should pay attention to your data plan when you are on vacation or traveling. Mobile data abroad is often scarce and expensive. Therefore it makes sense to activate the data saving mode.

Then significantly less data is uploaded. In particular, there is no sending and receiving of large data packets via mobile data or optionally also via WLAN. Use data saver mode on your devices to limit background network usage and save on cellular and Wi-Fi data.

Traveling with iPad and iPhone Tips Tricks I also use the camera on my iPhone for underwater photos when diving and snorkeling.

My conclusion

Yes, you should definitely take your iPhone and iPad with you on vacation. I've been using my Travel Buddies iPhone and iPad—and sometimes my MacBook Pro for business—for many years while traveling. I plan and organize my tour with the practical gadgets and use them on the go to take photos, videos and records. For several years now I have left the SLR camera at home with a clear conscience and use the iPhone as the only camera when traveling and on vacation.
