I have to admit that more and more often I use the AirPods Pro 2 not only for listening to music. I put the small, white plugs in my ears - and then do nothing. Instead, I enjoy the heavenly calm that the highly developed in-ear Bluetooth headphones create. I live in the middle of a big city and the noise level around me is immense. The AirPods Pro of the 1st generation were already in a daily endurance test in the fight against driving noise, horns and the everyday noise of people in the big city. The AirPods Pro 1 did their job really well.

A hit on the go?

On the treadmill in the gym, when using the kitchen blender, on the plane and at the pool on vacation when strange children romped around me. Everything was nice and quiet. I didn't think there was more to it than that. But it does - and that was my first observation about the AirPods Pro 2: Plug in the headphones, press and hold the right earpiece, turn on noise cancellation and there's silence. Silence in perfection I would say. At least as far as the technical possibilities of such compact, tiny earplugs are concerned. And this is my first impression in my AirPods Pro 2 test: Thank you Apple, finally there is peace in the box.

Not only the noise suppression of the AirPods Pro 2 is immediately convincing - the sound of the in-ears has also improved noticeably thanks to the H2 chip. Balanced sound, strong bass and fascinating 3D audio immediately impressed me. The sound is really great and noticeably better than the predecessors. And another small, positive detail that I immediately noticed: the handle of the earphones can now be used to turn the volume up and down. This is very practical - and I used the function from the first minute.

Unfortunately, the AirPods Pro 2 cannot score in terms of optics. The new AirPods Pro 2 not only look like the first generation at first glance. The dimensions and design are practically identical. Only the Magsafe charging case has a speaker and an attachment to which a loop can be attached. Basically, it still looks the same as its predecessor. Visually, the AirPods Pro really could have used an update after three years.

But well, the inner values ​​count all the more. The main differences are found inside the small white earbuds: an improved, more powerful H2 chip from Apple with improved sound, improved noise cancellation, "Hey Siri" support and adaptive transparency mode. The latter is designed to let outside noise through, so you not only perceive what's happening around you, but also hear it very clearly.

RRP has become a little more expensive

The AirPods Pro 2 have become more expensive. They are available in white and cost 299 euros (RRP in Germany and including German VAT). Happig, for sure. I was able to buy my AirPods Pro 2 at a reduced price shortly after they came out – for 279 euros at Amazon. Prices are likely to fall even further over time.

AirPods Pro 2 come in four sizes with silicone pads that are quick and easy to swap out. I have to say that changing the silicone tips is really very easy and quick. The fit itself was perfect for me with the medium sized earbuds - they were snug in my ear and didn't slip out even during strenuous exercise. They are also sweat resistant.

While the design of the earphones has remained almost identical, the AirPods Pro 2 functions have improved significantly in some cases. The small, white in-ear Bluetooth headphones create a surprising sound experience. The new H2 chip from Apple ensures an excellent, balanced sound. If desired, they can easily create peace and quiet with their excellent active noise cancellation - even on the train or in the office. The AirPods Pro 2 have great sound quality, noise cancellation and transparent features. They're convenient and easy to use, and their charging case with speaker comes in handy when you misplace your AirPods. However, they are more expensive than the normal AirPods 3 and their design is now getting a bit old.

Who are the AirPods 2 suitable for?

I have to say that the AirPods 2 bring me into a little conflict: At home I don't know whether I should wear the small in-ears or put on my big AirPods Max. I've even considered whether I still need the big AirPods Max because the AirPods Pro 2 work so well. Therefore, I would say that the AirPods Pro 2 are particularly suitable for active people. Because the earplugs are protected against sweat and splash water with their IPX4 certification. This means that they can easily withstand a heavy summer rain or an intense workout at the gym.

If you travel a lot—on the subway to work, on plane trips, on vacation by the pool, and anywhere outdoors—AirPods Pro 2 are a great choice. At home you can also use over-ears like the AirPods Max. If you want to use the noise-cancelling feature while working at home, you have a similar level of outside noise cancellation in the AirPods Max.

My conclusion

The AirPods Pro 2 are some of the best wireless Bluetooth earbuds you can buy. They offer great sound quality and were absolutely convincing in my AirPods Pro 2 test. The AirPods Pro 2 offer excellent, balanced sound with active noise cancellation. The H2 chip from Apple powers AirPods with enough power for advanced audio performance. The specially designed driver and amplifier work together to deliver smooth highs, deep bass and impressive clarity. The earplugs are also comfortable to wear and fit well in the ear. The AirPods Pro 2 are available with four differently sized silicone pads that can be swapped out quickly and easily.

The charging case for the new AirPods Pro 2 is also slightly larger than that of the regular AirPods 3, but it still fits easily in a jean pocket — and that's a good thing. The new function of the charging case: It can be attached to a magnetic charger Apple Watch placed and wirelessly charged. Now you don't have to search for that Lightning cable or a charging pad when you're on the go. All in all, the AirPods Pro 2 are an excellent choice for anyone looking for a great pair of wireless earbuds.
