In my Garmin fenix 7 test with my experiences, I have put together all the important information about the sports smartwatch for you.

I was up with the Garmin fenix 6 Sapphire Mauritius on the go and have the smartwatch there before Place Extensively tested when hiking, on the beach, snorkeling and actually in all situations. Of course I also have the sports watch in the evening at dinner in the luxurious Hotel worn and came to the conclusion relatively quickly that the outdoor smartwatch is a very successful all-rounder. In particular, I really liked the combination of functionality and the robust design of the smartwatch with high-quality materials. However, I was missing one thing with this model: the Touchscreen – i.e. the touch-sensitive screen on which you can control the smartwatch with swipe gestures.

I was wondering how you can still control a current smartwatch without touch and just by pressing a button. The answer is simple: there are many users, especially among die-hard athletes, who prefer to control the sports watch with the push of a button during training. I've spoken to some of them in the meantime. On the other hand, there are the technology fans like me, who like to jog and exercise, but are perhaps not quite as ambitious.

Garmin also took pity on us and finally gave the Garmin fenix 7 a touchscreen. Is that enough to win my heart? What are the strengths and weaknesses of the seventh generation fenix? Would you rather take the normal model or choose Sapphire and Solar for an extra charge? In my Garmin fenix 7 test, I have compiled my experiences with the smartwatch for you.

In contrast to my other long and very detailed smartwatch tests, I only tried the Garmin fenix 7 for a very short time and therefore do not want to make a final judgment. I just put my findings together for you. The Sport Smartwatch is undoubtedly a very high-quality product - and I think buyers will not go far wrong with the purchase.

Garmin fenix 7 Solar Test - Features of the high-end multisport smartwatch

With the seventh model generation, the manufacturer Garmin has improved its fenix model and released one of the most promising smartwatches. The Garmin fenix 7 Sapphire solar GPS multisport watch is ideal for outdoor activities and is equipped with a Power Sapphire solar charging lens, which significantly extends the battery life - the sports watch lasts up to 22 days in smartwatch mode. Whether users jog, bike, ski, navigate on vacation or just enjoy the day, this smartwatch could be the ideal companion.

But not only the long battery life thanks to the solar charging technology distinguishes this smartwatch. The highlights of the new Garmin include heart rate measurement on the wrist, the Pulse Ox sensor and the PacePro running coach. Above all, this smartwatch comes very close to a watch thanks to the round design and the robust housing with an elegant DLC or titanium bezel.

The mid-range fenix model has a 1,3-inch display and 47mm body, which is already big and eye-catching on the wrist. There are three sizes with 1,2", 1,3" and 1,4" displays. The series has been tested by the manufacturer to US military standards including temperature, shock resistance and water resistance. The smartwatch relies on the tried and tested button operation in combination with a responsive touchscreen. In the following, I will introduce you to the most important features and functions of the Garmin Smartwatch, which I will also take a closer look at in my Garmin fenix 7 review.

1. Training functions of the Garmin fenix 7

The previous models were already equipped with a wealth of training functions. This is also the case with the Garmin fenix 7: 60 sports and outdoor apps are available on the sports watch. This includes trail running, track training, swimming, running, cycling, hiking, rowing, skiing, golfing, surfing, indoor climbing and many other popular sports. The workouts with animated exercises and training plans, as already introduced with the Garmin venu, are also very appealing. Even experienced fitness athletes will certainly find one or the other exercise here that they have not previously had in their repertoire.

In addition, extensive sports and training functions including training load and recovery times are available. The Stamina function, in which a residual energy analysis is carried out when running and cycling, is particularly exciting. And the Physiocheck, which includes running dynamics data, VO2max adjusted for heat and altitude, trail running adjustment, recovery advisor and more.

2. Navigation and outdoor functions of the Garmin fenix 7

The recording of the travel distance is now even more precise. A high-precision route recording takes place with the help of the Garmin fenix 7 through the reception of different global satellite systems (GPS, GLONASS, GALILEO) and ABC sensors. The ABC sensors, which include an altimeter for altitude data, a barometer for monitoring the weather and a 3-axis electronic compass, make navigation significantly more precise. The top models of the fenix also offer L5 multi-frequency reception (Sapphire models). So-called TopoActive maps from all over the world can be loaded onto the Garmin fenix 7 in order to navigate, for example, when traveling or on vacation. Since the fenix 7 itself has WiFi connectivity, users can load and update maps and software directly onto the smartwatch without a computer.

The POIS function is particularly useful on vacation and when travelling: the smartwatch shows interesting places – points of interest – along the route.

3. Garmin fenix 7 health features

The Garmin fenix 7 is definitely one of the market leaders, especially when it comes to health functions. The Garmin fenix 7 performs all-day health and fitness tracking with the latest sensor generation - including wrist-based heart rate measurement, body battery calculation, stress level calculation, Pulse Ox, respiration rate, VO2max as well as cycle and pregnancy tracking. Also exciting is the advanced sleep analysis with sleep score for sleep quality and insights directly on the watch, which shows complete information on light, deep and REM sleep. In addition, the Garmin fenix records fluid intake and uses automatic targets to ensure that wearers drink enough.

4. Garmin fenix 7 smartwatch features

Of course, the Garmin fenix 7 also has the typical smart features, which have hardly changed compared to the previous model. It has Garmin Pay, Garmin Music and Smart Notifications - and of course it is compatible with Garmin Connect, the app on the smartphone.

Also worth mentioning among the smart features are automatic accident notification and emergency assistance (manually), as well as security and tracking functions, where live position information can be automatically sent to contacts for certain activities.

Garmin fenix 7 - the most important findings

The Garmin fenix 7 is an outdoor smartwatch designed to motivate athletes to new peak performances and provide outdoor fans with the most important information. Like the predecessors fenix 5 and fenix 6, the sports smartwatch convinces with high-quality materials, an attractive and robust watch design and an almost endless battery life. So the Garmin fenix 7 is the ideal outdoor watch and a reliable companion when travelling, during sports and in everyday life? What are their strengths and weaknesses? I have compiled my Garmin fenix 7 review with my experiences to show you.

The wearable is equipped with a variety of sensors that support athletes during training: an optical heart rate sensor, a barometric altimeter, a 3-axis compass and a gyroscope. The built-in GPS receiver also enables precise navigation. For many athletes, the most important feature of the fenix 7 is the performance widget. Training data such as pace, distance covered and heart rate are collected and displayed in real time. This way you can see at a glance how your performance is developing during the run

The sports smartwatch is available in three different case sizes. Depending on the model, the fenix 7 has a diameter of 47, 51 or 54 millimeters. The smaller the case, the lighter and more comfortable the watch sits on the wrist - the fenix 7 in size S is therefore the better choice, especially for women and people with thin wrists. The design of the sports watch is very successful: Thanks to the high-quality materials used, such as stainless steel and sapphire glass, the smartwatch looks very elegant and high-quality. The fenix 7 is available in different color combinations.

The Garmin fenix 7 is a great outdoor smartwatch that motivates athletes to new heights and provides outdoor fans with important information. Its most important features include high-quality materials, a robust watch design, a built-in GPS receiver and an almost endless battery life. However, there are also some disadvantages that are worth mentioning. A few of them are the lack of support for third-party apps, the high price, and the fact that it's not always accurate. Overall, the Garmin fenix 7 is a great outdoor smartwatch that will appeal to athletes and outdoor enthusiasts alike.

What is better heart rate monitor or chest strap?

Wearing a chest strap while running is a very precise way of tracking your heart rate during sports such as jogging, running, cycling, and many other sports. Modern sports watches and sports smartwatches therefore use an optical heart sensor to measure the heart rate directly on the wrist. At first, this method may have been less precise. Optical heart rate measurement on the wrist is now so sophisticated that precise results can be achieved and a chest strap is no longer necessary. The Apple Watch Series 5 was awarded a top grade of 12 as test winner by Stiftung Warentest due to its precise measurement results in the 2019/1,8 test.
