So many different running routes
And so I decided to discover a new route and try something new at least once a week. My regular route is the 7,4 kilometer long route around the Outer Alster, which I usually add a few more kilometers to get a total distance of around 12 to 15 kilometers. It's not so easy for me on other running routes: in the city park, for example, it's difficult to complete the ten kilometers. You have to think of a sophisticated route so that you don't have to walk around the outside of the route several times. The running route in the Eilbektal, which leads along the Eilbe Canal of the same name and the Kuhmühlenteich, is also quite pleasant.
Overall, there are Hamburg (travel report) numerous exciting running routes that you can discover again and again and combine in different ways. Below we have put together many valuable tips for jogging in Hamburg on the Alster, in the city park and on many other running routes.

The most beautiful running routes in Hamburg for jogging and Nordic walking
In Hamburg you will find numerous excellent running routes that will give you the variety you need during your run. You can use the routes for jogging (or walking) and you will often find stations where you can do various fitness exercises such as pull-ups or abdominal muscle training. This way you can combine your run with a fitness workout. You will even find some water dispensers on the Alster and in the city park. Below I will introduce you to a few of the most important running routes so that you have an overview when jogging in Hamburg.
1. Jogging on the Alster - spectacular view of the Hamburg panorama
The path around the Alster - the large lake in the middle of Hamburg - is probably the most important and most used running route in the city. The route is so popular because it is centrally located in the middle of Hamburg and at the same time offers a spectacular view of the panorama of the Hanseatic city. A 7,4 kilometer long path leads around the Outer Alster, which can be used by pedestrians and partly also by cyclists. However, sometimes cyclists also have to use cycle roads or cycle paths. If the 7,4 kilometers around the Outer Alster are too short for you, you can also extend your route to include the Binnenalster and the Alsterstreek, so that various combinations for jogging on the Alster are possible are.
The big run also has some disadvantages: During the week, on sunny days, there are a lot of joggers here after work and you have to share the route with numerous pedestrians and cyclists. It can get very crowded on the Alster, especially during peak times. If you can, postpone your run around the Alster to the morning or afternoon. On weekends it is crowded all day long. There is always a bit of crowding, especially in some narrow parts of the path. Overall, the running route around the Alster is probably the most attractive and exciting jogging route in Hamburg. On the Alster there are two water dispensers (left and right sides, in the middle) and a public toilet at the police station.
2. Running in Stadtpark - green oasis in the middle of Hamburg
While the Outer Alster is rather busy and the urban ambience can be enjoyed while jogging on the large lake in the middle of Hamburg, the city park is ideal for anyone who wants to enjoy some nature during their jogging session in Hamburg. You will find a variety of connected paths that you can walk in the park, and there is even a larger, connected forest area at the top of the planetarium.
In general, the planetarium is probably the ultimate attraction when jogging in the city park. It's also very nice to walk around the Stadtparksee or take a short break for stretching exercises on the Love Island. Anyone jogging through the middle of the forest completely forgets that they are in a big city. In general, the city park is not that crowded. There's really a lot of space there and even at peak times the crowds are fairly dispersed.
3. Scenic Eilbektal - Walk among canals and green spaces
The Eilbektal is also ideal for jogging. The Eilbek Canal extends from the Alster towards Wandsbek and is surrounded by footpaths and cycle paths, so you have plenty of space to walk there. There are a lot of people out there, especially after work on sunny days. Smaller parks with lots of greenery can be found on both banks of the Eilbek Canal. You can walk along this canal for about 5 kilometers and optionally return along the other side of the bank.
The route can also be extended as desired towards Wandsbek along the Wandse. About one kilometer from the Alster is the Kuhmühlenteich, a medium-sized lake with a park, a church and an elevated railway bridge, which provides a bit of variety in the panorama. Overall, this route is definitely very attractive and can be used as a successful change from jogging on the Alster and in the city park.
4. Discover the picturesque Alster Valley - running in untouched nature
Another fascinating running route leads through the picturesque Alster Valley. I've been particularly fond of this route since I tried it for the first time last year. Since then it has been one of my regular runs and inspires me every time. The route begins at the Alstertal shopping center and runs along the course of the Alster to the historic Mellingburg lock. From there it continues to the picturesque copper pond near Lemsahl-Mellingstedt. The special thing about this route is that there are comparatively few pedestrians on it. You can often enjoy the manicured gravel paths all to yourself - except perhaps on Sunday afternoons when more people are out in nature.
The route is approximately 9,6 km long and can easily be extended to over 10 km with a few additional trails. The absolute highlight is the untouched nature that accompanies you at every turn. You even come right past the idyllic Alster loop, which as a nature reserve is completely untouched and inaccessible. This loop from the Alstertal shopping center to the Kupferteich shows running in Hamburg from its most original and natural side and lets you immerse yourself in nature during training and relax.
5. Jogging on the Elbe - Övelgönne on the picturesque Elbe beach
Another very attractive running route is on the Elbe. You can walk along the entire bank of the Elbe in any length from the museum harbor in Övelgönne. There are spacious footpaths and several beach sections along the way. In some cases the forest extends all the way to the shore. There is a lot to see there on the Elbe beach:
On the one hand you can admire the villas on the Elbchaussee, on the other hand you have a wonderful view of the port of Hamburg with the large ships. Overall, this is also a very attractive running route, although it is extremely crowded, especially on weekends when the weather is nice. It's also difficult to find a parking space here, so you may have to park up at Elbchaussee or in Altona. There are of course paid parking spaces in the front row.
6th walk through the harbor
Another exciting run takes you through the port of Hamburg. As a runner, for example, you can start in Hafen City, run over the old Elbe bridges into the harbor, continue over Veddeler Damm to the old Elbe tunnel. You then cross the old Elbe tunnel, come out again at the landing stages and walk back towards Hafen City. I've walked this route a lot:
On the one hand, there is an incredible amount to see and discover here, making this a very exciting route. You can also see the city from the old Elbe tunnel on the harbor side. The disadvantage of this route is that you come into contact with a lot of tourists at the jetties and are confronted with a lot of traffic on the harbor side. Otherwise, a very exciting run in Hamburg with the panorama between the Köhlbrand Bridge and the Hamburg skyline, which I have run many times.
7. The scenic running route through Planten un Blomen – relaxation and beauty in the middle of the city
Immerse yourself in a picturesque piece of nature in the middle of Hamburg - this is possible if you lace up your running shoes and explore the enchanting running route through Planten un Blomen. The extensive park is a real jewel of the city and offers an idyllic environment for relaxed jogging or walking amidst magnificent plants, colorful flower beds and impressive water landscapes. The well-groomed paths lead past numerous attractions that make running an unforgettable experience. Discover the rose garden with its more than 300 varieties of roses, the Japanese garden, which radiates Far Eastern flair, or the impressive water light organ, which creates an atmospheric atmosphere, especially in the evening hours.
In addition to the picturesque natural scenery, Planten un Blomen also offers numerous sports and fitness facilities. For example, you can supplement your running training with a unit on the outdoor fitness equipment or do stretching exercises in one of the many quiet corners of the park. The running route through Planten un Blomen is a relaxing yet inspiring experience for any runner who wants to enjoy the beauty of nature in the middle of the big city. Let yourself be enchanted by the diversity and aesthetics of this green retreat and experience a run that refreshes body and mind.
8. Discover the Wandsetal - a scenic running route from Wandsbeker Markt to Eichtalpark and on to Farmsen-Berne
Embark on a varied running route along the picturesque Wandsebach and discover the Wandsetal in all its facets. You start at the busy Wandsbeker Markt and follow the stream out of town. You'll soon leave the hustle and bustle of the city behind you and immerse yourself in the peace and beauty of the Wandsetal. The route leads through various parks, including the magical Eichtalpark, and finally ends in the charming Farmsen-Berne district.
The path along the Wandsebach is lined with lush vegetation and picturesque bridges that create a romantic atmosphere. Listen to the sound of the water and breathe in the fresh, clean air while running. Thanks to the well-developed and maintained paths, the route is suitable for experienced runners as well as beginners and walkers.
On the way through the Wandsetal there are also some sights and highlights to discover. The historic Eichtalpark Pavilion, which is surrounded by a beautiful garden, is located in the Eichtalpark. The idyllic mill pond also invites you to linger and enjoy the natural beauty. The running route through the Wandsetal offers a successful mixture of natural idyll and urban flair. In the midst of the green oasis you can walk relaxed and enjoy the varied route that leads from Wandsbek Markt to Farmsen-Berne. A real insider tip for anyone looking for an attractive and relaxing running route in Hamburg.
9. Boberger Dünen - a running paradise in the middle of untouched nature
The Boberger dunes, a hidden gem in the east of Hamburg, offer a breathtaking backdrop for unforgettable jogging experiences. In this unique oasis of picturesque dune landscapes and untouched nature you will find the perfect environment to take your running training to the next level. The diverse landscape of the Boberger dunes offers you challenging climbs that intensify your training and challenge your stamina. The soft sandy paths invite your feet to walk naturally and offer a unique experience.
Use the small beach at Lake Boberger for a well-deserved break and take a deep breath. Here you can recharge your batteries and be inspired by the beauty of nature before continuing your run. The Boberger dunes are a popular destination for hikers, cyclists and runners, but due to their size they offer you enough space to explore individual jogging routes and to train undisturbed in the middle of nature. Treat yourself to an incomparable running adventure in the Boberger dunes and immerse yourself in the fascination of nature, which awaits you here in all its glory. Running tips - What do you have to consider when jogging in Hamburg?
You don't have to worry about too much when jogging in Hamburg. Of course, you should get checked out by a doctor before running and, as a beginner, start slowly. There are fewer Hamburg-specific running tips:
Pay attention to positive interactions
Above all, joggers should of course pay attention to being polite to one another, as things can get crowded, especially on the Outer Alster, but also on many other running routes, and athletes, pedestrians and bicycles can quickly be on a collision course. All participants should simply take a step back - which unfortunately doesn't always happen in practice. Jogging in Hamburg is sometimes very rough. Also between joggers and cyclists. And runners don't have it easy in city traffic either; they often lose out.
Few public toilets
On the other hand, there are relatively few public toilets in downtown Hamburg. There is a public toilet at the police station on the Alster. The toilet at Alster Cliff, for example, is only for guests of the restaurant. At the other restaurants you could use the toilet facilities for a fee (no guarantee, I haven't tried them yet).
A total of five drinking water pumps in the city area
There are a total of five drinking water pumps in Hamburg, which joggers can of course also use. One is at the Rathausmarkt, one on each side of the Alster roughly in the middle, one at the Landungsbrücken and one in the city park. I personally know four fitness stations. One is at the upper end of the Eilbektal not far from the Friedrichsberg S-Bahn station, one at Schwanenwiek directly on the Outer Alster, one at the Krugkoppel Bridge on the Outer Alster and one in the city park near the Jahn-kampfbahn.
