For some vacationers and travelers, this question has a significance of epic proportions. I belong to the group of people who prefer to take a laptop or a tablet such as the iPad Pro with them when traveling and use it in every free minute to edit photos, make video calls at home or on the beach digital books to read. Or would I rather be abstinent and do without technical devices such as smartphones and tablets while on vacation?
I would probably place myself somewhere in between, as I realized especially during my iPad Pro test while traveling. A tablet is a practical companion, especially on flights. You can use it to watch videos, surf the Internet on many airlines or simply write a text.

We tested the iPad Pro while traveling and were pretty impressed with the device. The specifications of the new iPad Pro alone are impressive. With the new rimless design and the latest technology as well as the new Apple Pencil, the device feels great in the hand. Behind the huge display, the new tablet is packed with the latest technology that can rival many computers. The gadget can be controlled with intuitive gestures on the edge-to-edge display. This can be of essential importance, especially when traveling and vacationing.
In addition, the iPad Pro is now unlocked with Face ID facial recognition, which makes input even more secure. The tablet is powered by the new A12X Bionic processor, which, according to current performance tests, outshines many a laptop and also gives you the opportunity to edit photos, cut videos or simply play more demanding video games when traveling or on the plane.

With the tablet on vacation - experiences in the iPad Pro test while traveling
We bought the 12.9-inch iPad Pro with 256 GB of storage and without LTE so that we could of course test it extensively during the trip and share our experiences with you. We've been moving around for years Apple Cosmos and therefore it was relatively clear to us that we would use a tablet from the brand and not another. Yes, I know that is a matter of opinion. If you prefer another manufacturer, this article should tend to be transferable with some restrictions and should apply in a similar way to tablet computers from other manufacturers when used when traveling and on vacation.
Incredibly practical for travel bloggers, distracting for vacationers
Basically, we gained very positive impressions and gained very practical experience with the iPad Pro while traveling in the test. As a user you have various options with the tablet computer. Especially if you write about your travels or want to share your impressions with those at home, you have plenty of options with a tablet. The user can research on the Internet, edit images, write texts and upload everything directly with an Internet connection. This is all great for travel bloggers. For holidaymakers it means a lot of distraction from the actual topic – relaxation.
Mobile communication on the iPad is an advantage
The lack of LTE later turned out to be a disadvantage. Since LTE can be used in other European countries at no extra charge, this would have been a practical feature. What is particularly positive is the extremely good computing power of the iPad Pro, which can easily keep up with many desktop computers. In many situations, I typically used the significantly heavier and larger laptop. Thanks to the powerful tablet, I can now do without it and leave the large, heavy device at home, at least on a shorter trip.
The pros and cons of traveling with a tablet – iPad Pro test on vacation
First of all, for many users, of course, is the question of whether you should even take a tablet on holiday and whether it makes sense to use the iPad Pro on the road. Also for those who want to keep in contact with the home and possibly a book or read the newspaper daily, the iPad Pro can be the right choice when traveling. In any case, it is best if you want to take a tray with you on vacation or if you prefer to do it at home. You can take it with you and you do not have to use it. In many situations, the digital companion can be very handy and also assist you with travel planning on site.
iPad Pro test while traveling – Does the tablet replace a laptop on vacation?
The answered whether it was clearly yes and no. That clearly depends on your preferences. When we tested the iPad Pro while traveling, the device was absolutely sufficient for us. However, this is not always the case. If your as travel bloggers, Photographer or car on the road, and traveling for a long time since, the iPad Pro may not be enough for you when traveling. The operation scope tends to be somewhat limited.
Just right for smaller tasks
If you're going to be there for a week and know that you'll only use the device for a limited number of activities, such as writing a short text or posting a photo, the tablet is just right for you on vacation. Even if you have many workflows that you can use with this Apple Pencil like taking notes, making small sketches or creating brainstorming and mind maps, there is hardly a better way than using the iPad Pro on vacation. Calls at home with FaceTime, i.e. video telephony, also work fantastic with the iPad.
Use a laptop for more extensive work
If, however, you want to undertake more extensive work, program on your website, create more comprehensive back-ups of your data or just perform tasks that you would otherwise do best with the track pad or the mouse, you will simply miss the laptop. Does the iPad Pro replace a laptop when traveling? The answer is yes, if you expect only a limited amount of functionality. And no, if you want to work as a travel blogger or photographer for weeks on the go as you would otherwise do it from home. In this case, the iPad Pro is not enough and you should probably fall back on a MacBook Air (or an equivalent product from another manufacturer).
Strengths of the iPad Pro in the travel test – small, handy, powerful
The advantages are obvious. Especially in conjunction with the Apple Pencil, the tablet computer has proven to be a real productivity grenade on vacation. The iPad Pro when traveling is small and handy for its 12,9 inch display. It lies wonderfully in the hand and has a wonderful design that tempts you to use the gadget all the time. For the vast majority of vacationers and travelers, the tablet should be the perfect choice to bring a compact and convenient computer with you.
Weaknesses of the iPad Pro – less compatibility than a laptop
To be honest, the advantages of the iPad Pro when traveling are clearly outweighed. A tablet on vacation can be incredibly handy, and if you do not overuse it, it's an incredibly helpful travel gadget. A few minor drawbacks, however, our iPad Pro 2018 has revealed in the test. So the screen diagonal of the tablets in both 11 "and in 12.9" but already much smaller than a compact laptop. In addition, the functionality is cut compared to a laptop with track pad and keyboard.
The iPad Pro does not replace a laptop, and for more professional users such as photographers or travel journalists is still a notebook recommended. Specifically, the third-generation iPad Pro still suffers from teething troubles in a few devices, such as bent cases, uneven display illumination, or a slow responding display. However, most of the devices are in tip-top order, and our test device did not have these known errors.
