Monetize your blog and make money – my experiences with a blog business plan

I started my first blog about finance in 2008 and unfortunately gave it up a little later. I didn't get enough information at the time and had only gained some basic knowledge in a few university courses - unfortunately. Because if I had recognized the potential of blogging and working as a blogger back then, I would be a lot further today.

I started my blog in 2014

So it should be until 2014 that I started my first own website. Back then I just started a blog under my name. By now I had a bit more knowledge and was able to produce posts that were actually found and read through Google. A first sense of achievement. But monetize such online articles and make money with my blog? I was a long way from that at the time. At that time I was working in a publishing house and learned there that you can earn money with printed texts – but certainly not with blogs on the Internet.

Just Wanderlust came in 2016

It would be another two years before I launched my travel blog Just-Wanderlust.com. And then everything happened pretty quickly. Because I love the topic of travel so much, it was easy for me to write one post after the other. Just Wanderlust quickly reached a high number of hits and was read by hundreds of people every day. The growth was mainly driven by my love of writing: I spent thousands of hours writing new blog posts and creating landing pages with valuable content for the readers.

More and more readers are finding my blog

Today, several thousand people read my blog articles or check out my social media channels every day - and fortunately some of them also buy one or the other product through the affiliate links I offer. And almost every day companies ask for blog cooperations (travel blog cooperations). So I can say: monetizing your blog and making money from blogging works. Yes, it is possible, but it involves a lot of work. In addition, you have to read up on website technology and online marketing in order to acquire important basic knowledge and continue your education.

On my travel blog Just-Wanderlust.com and the social media channels of Strandkind Travels, I combine my love of traveling and nature with a passion for water sports such as stand-up paddling, diving and surfing. I am a journalist, author and blogger - and I am naturally curious when I get to know new travel destinations and then write about them in detail. As a technology fan, when I'm traveling with my family or alone, I'm always happy to bring a few travel gadgets with me for testing purposes. My favorite travel countries, which I also prefer to write about in my travel blog: USA, Thailand and Maldives.

Monetize your blog and make money with your blog – the three qualities for success

In my opinion, if you want to be successful with blogging, monetize your blog and earn money with it, you need exactly three qualities that will ensure that you will be successful in the medium and long term. These three qualities are perseverance, continuing education and advancement. Why is it these? Because they determine all further steps.

Jetting around the world, snapping a few photos and making a lot of money – that’s how many people imagine the blogger’s profession to be. The reality is of course very different. As a blogger, you spend thousands of hours in front of your computer writing posts. Photo: picjumbo.com on Pexels.com

1. Perseverance

Many bloggers give up after just six months. Blogging, if you want to do it professionally, is anything but just fun and sunshine. I would almost like to say – it is a craft. And when you start your journey as a blogger, you need one thing above all: perseverance. You will always find yourself in challenging situations, especially at the beginning, if you do not know what to do technically or if you cannot find any readers on your page despite your best efforts. If you give up now, it's your own fault. Because the magic word is: further training. If you can't get any further on your own, continue your education.

2. Continuing education

Learning to blog consists to a large extent of learning by doing. You try something and see. if it works. Experience has shown that this will get you quite far. However, it is better if you read up on certain topics in specialist literature, attend courses or watch YouTube tutorials.

3. Personal development

If you want to be successful with your blog, monetize it really sustainably and earn money with your blog, you will not be able to avoid developing yourself further in the medium term. This mainly affects topics such as discipline, but also your ability to network with other bloggers and employees in companies who could later become your customers. The topic of further development for bloggers is very complex - but believe me: without personal development it will not work.

Make money with travel blogs – Can you make a living from the travel blog?

So much can be revealed in advance: The less you try to make a living from blogging, the better you will succeed. What may sound paradoxical at first becomes clear on second glance: if you have no savings, quit your job and think you can make a living from your blog in two months, you are either a genius or you will fail at it. There may be people for whom this works. Who are so knowledgeable about the technology that they can monetize a blog in two months and live on the income.

Make better decisions: The more often you decide for and against something, the better your decisions will be - and when you realize how important some decisions are, you automatically make better decisions.
As a travel blogger, you are traveling to the most beautiful travel destinations around the world - but that is of little use to you if you don't regularly sit down at your laptop as a blogger and write really great and exciting articles about it.

Even though there are always success stories of people who can make a living from blogging, it is not an easy path. Most of the time you have to rely on multiple sources of income to stay afloat financially. The idea of a digital nomad sounds tempting at first. You can work from anywhere in the world and don't have to subordinate yourself to a boss or employer.

But blogging is often hard work and takes a lot of time and energy. It's often a struggle, especially at the beginning when you don't have loyal readers yet. For most bloggers, however, this assessment is completely unrealistic. You should take a more moderate approach.

Can a full-time blogger make a living?

So is it even realistic to make a living as a full-time blogger? Yes and no. That depends entirely on the individual case. You'll have a much harder time starting a business with a philosophy blog than with a blog about gardening or expensive luxury car accessories. So it depends on the topic and the niche you are in. It also depends on your technical knowledge and your willingness to work.

If you have dreams of working as a full-time blogger, you should think twice about whether it's right for you. Do your research and read testimonials from other bloggers before jumping in at the deep end. Because only those who are persistent and don't give up have a chance of success.

Do you have the skills to become a full-time blogger?

Do you have what it takes to become a full-time blogger? It's not nearly as easy as it looks to outsiders. If you dream of being a full-time blogger, take time right now to really think about whether or not it's the right decision for you. You are currently reading my personal experiences with the topic. Check out more. Because only those who are persistent and don't give up have a chance of success.

Blogging can be a lot of work, but it can also be a rewarding experience (oh yes, a very rewarding one!). You have to decide for yourself whether it is the right path for you. Do some research before taking the plunge into full-time blogging. If you're wondering if you can make a living blogging, ask yourself the following questions:

  • Do you like writing?
  • Am I comfortable promoting and presenting my work?
  • Do I have the time and energy to blog regularly?

If you can truly answer these questions in the affirmative, it will be possible for you to make a living from blogging.

Monetize your blog experience report – This is how it works with your blog business plan

Monetizing the blog is easy if you have no expectations of the amount of income. It becomes more difficult if you have a specific goal or if you want to earn part of your living with it. I would therefore recommend that most people earn money with the blog and see the income as a nice additional income to their main job. This keeps the motivation high to sit down again after full-time work and continue working on the blog.

If you want to become a full-time blogger, however, you have to expect a lot of effort and effort. The question is always: How much money do you want to earn with your blog? If your answer is "a lot," you should start thinking about conversion rate optimization early on. It is ultimately at the center of all the efforts you need to make to successfully monetize your blog and make money from your blog.

Have you already made attempts to monetize your blog? What worked and what didn't? Have you made a blog business plan? Are you toying with the idea of becoming a full-time blogger? Share your experiences with me in the comments below.
