Accordingly, divers often descend into the shark-lined waters - usually in the supposedly safe metal diving cages that divers protect from the big ones sharks to protect.

The safety of these cages is after the disturbing video in which a Great White Shark breaks through the cage and to the Diver gets into the cage, in question. The fact that this material has now become public could certainly be beneficial for the great white shark.

Great White Shark – Human Blame for Diving Cage Incident

The video clearly shows that both the shark and the diver were put in danger because the boat crew tried to lure the shark even closer to the cage with bait. The great white shark blindly followed the bait and therefore crashed into the cage, which it broke through due to the force and was caught between the bars by the diver. Underwater photographer Brian Skerry, who has been diving with sharks for decades, sees it similarly. Skerry believes the use of bait contributed to this incident occurring. The boat crew had thrown a rope containing tuna into the water to bring the shark closer to the diving cage.

“If you repeatedly bait the animals and the cage has a large opening to allow a clear view, the shark will follow the bait and at the last minute open its mouth, close its eyes and end up crashing into the cage,” explains Skerry. Skerry further explained to National Geographic that the diver was not in danger of being bitten, but rather of being mauled by the huge great white shark that he suddenly found himself in a cage with in a small space.

Great white shark in the diving cage – the boat crew was also shocked

Cameraman Brian Ernst, who filmed the shocking video that is currently circulating on YouTube and social media, reports that he too was concerned about the diver in the shark cage: “The shark just tried to get out of the cage and was really panicked. We were afraid that we would see someone die at that moment. Luckily, the crew reacted quickly and correctly and opened the top of the cage. A few seconds later the great white shark fought its way out of the top of the cage,” said Ernst.

Man is much more dangerous to the Great White Shark than the other way round

Hardly any other animal touches people's primal fears as intensely as the great white shark, which, as a great hunter of the seas, could be lurking beneath the surface. But scientists around the world agree that humans threaten the great white shark much more than the other way around. Because most of what we believe about the great white shark is simply not true. They are not the merciless hunters they are regularly portrayed as. They are intelligent creatures that live in the seas and neither live in schools nor are they completely solitary creatures. Every now and then they gather near food. The females give birth to their young near the island of Guadeloupe because they find a particularly protected sea area there and there is enough food.

Sharks are much more at risk from humans than the other way around. They are hunted for their fins. Humans kill between 100 million and 270 million sharks every year.

Why the shark cage incident could help the Great White Shark

Underwater photographer Brian Skerry emphasizes that these incidents are relatively rare and are more or less inevitable with the increased frequency of shark diving: “It's usually an accident and sometimes really difficult to avoid,” he explains.

On the one hand, accidents with shark cages have become more frequent, on the other hand, the increased popularity of diving with great white sharks has a positive effect: “When I started observing sharks 30 years ago, hardly anyone else was interested in seeing them. Now there are shark ambassadors all over the world doing educational work for the sharks. They are campaigning for people to change their attitudes towards sharks so that people don't think they are bloodthirsty monsters, ”says Skerry. Shark cage filmmaker Ernst also emphasizes that the sharks mostly behaved very well: “The sharks were really great. They did not try to break into the cage. They just wanted to grab the bait, ”emphasizes Ernst. "They didn't want to attack the people."

Sharks are much more endangered by humans than vice versa

Sharks are much more endangered by humans than the other way around. They are hunted for their fins. Humans kill between 100 million and 270 million sharks each year. Underwater photographer Skerry explains that diving in shark cages has done part of creating firsthand people who can become more aware of animal behavior and also notice the dwindling numbers.

Diving with shark cages ultimately led to an increase in the number of shark advocates and to support the sharks. And the incident with the great white shark in the shark cage, which fortunately turned out well for everyone involved, once again puts the subject in the spotlight and - correctly interpreted and discussed - could thus provide better protection for the sharks.
