FAQs Cleaning diving watch tips – the most important questions and answers

I have put together the most important questions and answers about cleaning diving watches for you. The cleaning of your diving watch is of course at your own risk. You should proceed very carefully so as not to endanger the good piece.

How do you clean diving watches?

If possible, you should clean your diving watch with a dry, soft microfiber cloth specially designed for watches, because then you can least go wrong. You should make sure that the cloth is clean and that there are no pebbles or grains of sand in it. If that is not enough and the diver's watch is more dirty, you should rinse your timepiece with clear water. Especially after diving, snorkeling or swimming in salt water, you should definitely rinse the diver's watch with fresh water. If that's not enough because the watch is too dirty, you can use soapy water or rubbing alcohol, but not harsh cleaners. What can also work is an ultrasonic cleaner. However, you should check in advance whether your diving watch is suitable for this.

How do you get watch straps clean?

Watch straps should ideally be cleaned with a dry microfiber cloth. You should make sure that the cloth is clean and that there are no pebbles or grains of sand in it. If that is not enough and the watch strap is more soiled, you should rinse your timepiece with clear water or, depending on the material, use soapy water or rubbing alcohol. Under no circumstances should leather bracelets be treated with water or cleaning agents, as they could otherwise be destroyed. I would treat leather bracelets with a special cleaning agent for leather.

What quality features make a good and easy-care diving watch?

Like many other sports watches, diving watches have special quality features. This includes the workmanship and quality as well as the design in conjunction with the functional features. These factors are elementary and affect the durability and, above all, the value development of a diving watch. Everyone knows the consequences of choosing mineral glass as the watch's cover glass.

If it is a few years old and has had many dives, it will be scratched. The casing, the watch glass of the diving watch, either in mineral glass or sapphire glass, and above all the movement are usually the most important quality features. Functions and technical refinements complement the respective model and are usually considered “nice-to-have”.

Which diver watch tips do I have to consider before and after dives?

Before you go into the water with your diving watch for the first time, you should definitely familiarize yourself with the accessory technically. Divers should definitely know the individual functions of the watch. This is the only way to fully utilize the timepiece. There are big differences in the range of functions between individual manufacturers and models. When divers still use the watch as part of their diving equipment, it is usually as a back-up to the dive computer. Divers should also become familiar with helium valve technology.

But the most important thing of all is checking the crown. The watch is only protected from water and moisture if the crown is correctly locked – i.e. firmly screwed on. Therefore, before every dive, when putting on the watch: A quick check to ensure that the crown is correctly and firmly attached! After the dive, you should remove salt water and dirt from the watch. To do this, it is usually sufficient to pull the watch through the sink when washing out the watch (attention: crown!). Diving watches and bracelets - especially rubber bracelets - will thank you in the long term if you rinse them with fresh water after the dive.

What care tips can I use to protect my watch in everyday life?

Owners can also protect their piece of jewelry very well from contamination and damage in everyday life. The most important diving watch care tips are to store the watch in a special box and protect it from sunlight. If I bought a new diving watch with a quartz movement or a mechanical movement, it should be stored in a special watch box to keep away dust and dirt. Strong and prolonged exposure to sunlight should also be avoided.

Mechanical watches in particular can be stored in special watch winders. These keep the watch always ready for use - even if it is not worn for a long time. The watch winder slowly rotates the automatic watch attached to it around the rotor axis. The movement of the watch allows the winding mechanism (rotor, automatic hammer or similar) to work and the watch is wound.

How often does my diving watch need to be serviced?

In order for a diver's watch to remain waterproof in the long term, it must be regularly revised and serviced. All diving watch care tips ultimately boil down to this. There are fixed maintenance intervals that diving watch buyers should adhere to in order to treat their jewelry as gently as possible. Some watches need new batteries on a regular basis. The mechanical diving watches must be adjusted and oiled.

  • Battery: Change the energy source about every 2 years (battery change)
  • Mechanical: about every 6 year to adjust the swing spring and oils of all mechanical components

Where can I take the watch for service?

Diving watches should always be serviced by a reliable and specialized dealer who can also subject the watches to a pressure test after the overhaul. This is essential to ensure that the diver's watch is waterproof again. This is the biggest difference to the classic jeweler. But the buyer is never at the wrong address directly from the manufacturer either.

What may the revision of the diver's watch cost?

A classic battery change with pressure-tightness test and depending on the watch model, manufacturers and pricing usually cost between 30 and 120 Euro.

What exactly is there done with the clock?

The clock is opened, the battery replaced, sealing ring of the housing replaced, all components checked, all necessary minor work performed and subjected to a pressure test after closing the housing base cover. This should be done by the dealer so you can be sure that the watch is tight and fully functional.
